A Week Eight look at the state of the playoff race

Getty Images

Is Week Eight too early to talk about the NFL playoff race? Probably. But we’ll do it anyway.

AFC West: First place in the division is on the line Thursday night, when the 5-2 Chargers visit the 5-1 Broncos. The Broncos are currently the favorites in the division, but the Chargers could change that with a road win. Denver also owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over Indianapolis, which may turn out to make a difference in home-field advantage in the playoffs.

AFC South: The 5-2 Colts already have a two-game lead and a head-to-head tiebreaker edge over the second-place 3-4 Texans. It will be a big surprise if Indianapolis doesn’t win this division.

AFC East: The 5-2 Patriots have a one-game lead over the second-place Bills, and have beaten the Bills head to head. New England will likely win this division for the 12th time in the 14 seasons since Tom Brady took over for Drew Bledsoe in 2001.

AFC North: The 5-2 Ravens lead the 3-2-1 Bengals and 4-3 Steelers in a division that could turn out to be a three-way race. (Any thoughts that the 3-3 Browns could make it a four-way race probably went out the window with Sunday’s loss to the Jaguars.)

AFC wild card: The second-place teams in the AFC West and AFC North (currently the Chargers and Bengals) would appear to be the most likely wild-card contenders, and the third-place teams in those divisions (Chiefs and Steelers) may be contenders as well. The Bills and Dolphins are also in the mix, while the Texans may be contenders solely because they still get four games against their terrible division rivals, the Titans and Jaguars.

Best guess seeds: 1. Denver, 2. Indianapolis, 3. Patriots, 4. Ravens, 5. Chargers, 6. Bengals.

NFC West: The 5-1 Cardinals have a game and a half lead over the 4-3 49ers and a two-game lead over the 3-3 Seahawks, and the Cardinals are also the only team in the division that hasn’t lost a game within the division yet. It sounds crazy to say, but the Cardinals may now be the division favorites.

NFC East: At 6-1, the Cowboys have the best record in the NFL. Dallas meets 5-1 Philadelphia twice late in the season (on Thanksgiving in Dallas and December 14 in Philadelphia), and those look like the games that will decide the NFC East, with the team that doesn’t win the division having a good chance at a wild card.

NFC North: The 5-2 Lions and 5-2 Packers are tied atop the division, with the Lions currently owning the head-to-head tiebreaker thanks to a win at Ford Field. It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see the Week 17 rematch in Green Bay decide the division winner, with the second-place team having a good chance at a wild card.

NFC South: Well, someone has to win this division. It might turn out to be a team with a losing record, maybe the Panthers at 7-8-1 or the Saints at 7-9, but someone will win it.

NFC wild card: You’d think that if the Cardinals end up winning the West that the Seahawks and 49ers would be wild card favorites, but the schedules for the NFC North second-place team and the NFC East second-place team may turn out to be more favorable. It wouldn’t be surprising to see both of last year’s NFC Championship Game participants on the outside looking in come playoff time.

Best guess seeds: 1. Dallas, 2. Arizona, 3. Green Bay, 4. Carolina, 5. Philadelphia, 6. Detroit.

  1. This entire season is an asterisk for the NFL if Robert Griffin and the Redskins don’t get into the playoffs because when he’s on the field, nobody can legitimately beat the Redskins. Be honest with yourselfs folks. #HTTR

  2. My prediction the chiefs are going to jump past the bolts and snag there playoff spot. Despite major injuries the chiefs are playing very good football right now.

  3. The Bills’ schedule until December is fairly easy but three of the final four games are brutal (at Denver, Green Bay, at Oakland, at New England.) But if they can fatten up on wins before then I think they have a chance. (Of course, as a Bills fan, I’m bracing for the worst.)

  4. Short Handed 49ers are 2-1 against Dallas, Philadelphia, and Arizona this year. Tells you everything you need to know. The 49ers run to 11-5 or 12-4 starts November 2nd. They will be 8-3 when the Seahawks come calling Thanksgiving Night. Lot of football left.

  5. Giving Dallas the edge over Philly. Ouch.

While DeMarco Murray is having a record setting season I expect him to be ground down or injured by Thanksgiving. If the Cowboys win the division Murray should definitely be team MVP.

On the plus side the Eagles offensive line has a chance to be fully healthy for the first time all season by week 10. If that happens and they stay healthy, they should outscore the Cowboys.

  6. Wow, New Orleans should be owning the NFC South in its current condition.
    —————————————————–
You can say that for any NFCS team. Nobody is taking advantage. I think the Panthers will pull it out though once their RB’s get back healthy and when they get back Hardy once he’s found innocent.

  7. You mean the Jets look like they will remain tied with the Houston Oilers for Eastern Division titles???

I’m not sure I’d write them off just yet.

I think most GMs would agree that the thing that would most help that team is paying $6 million and a draft pick for a sociopath WR who is fond of assaulting his fellow players.

(And yes, for the Jets that IS an improvement)

  8. the AFC north will be a three way race? have you watched the Steelers play at all this year? who have they beat this year?

  9. The NFC South is just sad….not one of those teams would deserve to go to the post season if it were today. Hopefully one team will manage at least a winning record before the end of the season but it’s looking grim.

  10. That’s a solid lineup of potential playoff teams. Now, think what it would look like if that dopey Goodell gets his way and expands it. You’ll have bunk teams like Chicago and even my own competing. Imagine if mine snuck in because of expansion? Is there any team on that list that would raise its hand and volunteer playing against an Eli-led team that had to win its final 4 games to get in?

  11. Why do all niners fans constantly cry about how they are’t healthy, but then ignore the teams the injuries the teams they have played have?

“We are 2-1 against Dallas, PHilly and the Cards!”

You are 3-0 playing Dallas in week 1, when anything can happen, Philly with 3 offensive line starters out, and one out of position, and the Cards with a 3rd string QB. get over yourselves

  12. Remember when the NFC West sent a 7-9 team to the playoffs? The NFC South might just manage that this year.

  13. Denver and San Diego still have to play at Arrowhead, so your rankings are premature, but thanks anyway.

  14. Looking at it from a degenerate perspective…

No mention of the Dolphins in the AFC East. Bet sites seem to have the same opinion and are offering to pay out 10x the wager if they top the division.

If the Jets get that kick up and Dolphins hold on to beat Pack it might be odds reversed. Also I believe Miami has the more favorable schedule.

Good value for the risk in my opinion.

  15. We have not seen the real Cowboy D. The O is for real, I’m not hating, but as soon as somebody makes them go 3 and out…. that Defense will remind us why we dogged them in August.

  16. So your predictions are that nothing will change between now and the end of the season in terms of the playoff teams…

    Not a very smart prediction.

    1. Indianapolis, 2. Denver, 3. New England, 4. Cincinnati, 5. Baltimore; 6. San Diego

    1. Green Bay; 2. Philadelphia; 3. San Francisco; 4. New Orleans; 5. Dallas; 6. Arizona

  17. The NFC playoff picture is projecting to be a pretty good 4 or 5 team race. My guess is it will be a 4 team race between PHI, SEA, SF, DET and potentially GB .

Looking at the schedules, I’m going to go out on a limb and predict 11-5 for GB, PHI and SF. 10-6 for DET and SEA. GB is in as North champ and PHI and SF as wild cards.

Lotta football yet to be played.

  18. eagleswin- so in order for you team to win you must be completely healthy and bank on the cowboys losing their best player??? Sounds far fetched, i dont have a dog in this fight, but Philly is streaky to say the least, no way they should be put ahead of the cowboys at this point

  19. Arizona has played 1 division game so far. Let’s not talk like they’re 3-0 in the division or something. I’m just hoping they can win the proper number of double digit games to make the playoffs this year.

  20. I’m enjoying the Seahawks’ struggles as much as anybody, but do you really think that it’s a “best guess” that they won’t even reach the postseason? I’m not predicting they will go 13-3, but that seems more likely than missing the playoffs.

    =======================================

You’re just repeating what you read from the “experts”. Murray has a monster O line this season giving him tunnels to run through. He’s not taking many brutal hits. That’s how Emmitt was able to have a long career and stay healthy.

  22. The Bills have the easiest schedule by far over the next 5 games, then play the Raiders later in the year. Looking it over, they’ll find a way to mess it up somehow in heart-breaking fashion.

  23. We have not seen the real Cowboy D. The O is for real, I’m not hating, but as soon as somebody makes them go 3 and out…. that Defense will remind us why we dogged them in August.

Dallas had the most 3&outs they had all year against the Giants. 3. A 4th down conversion near midfield and a blown whistle on a strip of Andre Williams by Terrell McClain kept that game closer than it was.

    ————————————–

I agree that Emmitt was a product of his offensive line. But was Emmitt ever asked to carry the ball roughly 450 times in a season? That’s where my criticism lies.

He isn’t taking the big hits but he is on pace to set a league record in carries.

  25. Pardon blockedshotnyr because hes not representing all colts fans.

Everyone knows denver has the AFC sealed. Its that #2 seed everyone else is fighting for. Too bad the rest AFC West is out of the race.
    AFC South: Colts
    AFC North: Ravens
    AFC East: Patriots

Those are our division leaders. Lets see who wants that #2 seed more

  26. As a Chargers fan, I am concerned about KC. Their next three games are Rams and Jets at home, then Buffalo. They can easily be 6-3 by then.

During the same stretch, the Chargers have Denver and Miami on the road. Highly possible for the Bolts to be 5-4 at their bye week.

  27. The Bungles are sliding again. Who have the Ravens beat? People said the same thing last year wth the ravens only to see Baltimore crumble and finish behind Pittsburgh again. The steelers can win this division.

  28. Not a chance Dallas will win the East. Philly is a much better team. Neednt look any further than their schedule.

It’s funny how if Dallas loses in Seattle, we’d be talking about them as a pretender at 5-2- yet ironically Seattle is allegedly going to miss the playoffs- but that win propels Dallas into NFC home field advantage?

  29. Don’t count on Panther’s having a losing record just yet…..They let one get away against the Bengals, and yes they have played like pure crap this season. Lets say they lose against the Seahawks, they have the Saints at home(should be win), to Philly, Falcons at home, then Bye. If they should get Hardy back then, the last 5 games are @Vikes, @Saints, Bucs, Browns, @Falcons, which are all possible wins if they can get a pass rush…very possible 9-6-1. If they do not get Hardy back, then yes you are looking at an ugly record as I don’t see anyone in the NFCS getting more than 6-7 wins.

  30. It’s going to be tough for the Colts to pass the Broncos. Assuming the Colts were to win out (an aggressive assumption), Denver would have to lose at least 2 more games this season. Denver is sitting pretty thanks to their win over Indy in Week 1.

  31. mazenblue says:Oct 21, 2014 12:28 PM

NFC is stacked at this moment in time.

    ———————

The AFC is basically in a dead heat with the NFC at the moment. 15-16-1.

From the 2008-2012 the NFC were pretty dominant, but it started to swing the other way last year (look at the 6 AFC playoff team’s records against the NFC last year), and with the exception of 2 or 3 teams it was pretty equal.

Now it is basically completely equal. Seattle, SF and Carolina have all lost to AFC teams and as good as Dallas has been, they aren’t scaring anyone just yet.

    It’s wide open.

Both teams have relatively easy schedules remaining. That said, they have to win the games. Long season yet to go. Injuries, surprise losses, etc. As good as they look, Denver can definitely lose one of two to SD and to the Patriots and possibly at KC. Indy can get the first seed if Denver messes up for sure. It’s a long way from over. Same goes for Indy. They threw up a few stinkers last year and they can do it again.

Nothing is guaranteed for a while yet.

I’m no fan of either team, but does anyone truly believe BOTH the 9ers and Hawks will miss the playoffs?
    ——————–

5 years ago you would have asked “Does anyone truly believe that the 9ers or Hawks can make the playoffs?”

Things can change fast in the NFL.

Green Bay thought they were a burgeoning dynasty at 13-0 in 2011 after winning the previous Super Bowl. They lost to KC, went 15-1 and got booted out of the playoffs in the first round. They haven’t made any noise since.

The 9ers actually look bad right now. So I don’t know if they can make it and Seattle has a good chance, but they likely have to get by Arizona because the wild card records might be too good for them.

They can both miss the playoffs. It’s possible.

    —————–

The Bills have a legit chance. They toughed out two close wins. Those two wins could be the difference between 9-7 and 7-9.

  35. Theytatriots first 6 opponents were combined 13 and 25. the next six have a combined record of 27 and 13. They lost a division game to Miami. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet (which reminds me they haven’t played Green Bay yet).

Whether or not it’s possible is not what I asked.

What I asked is if you truly believe it. Your response does not answer my question, nor does it change my opinion on what my answer would be.

    ………………..
I’m also a Bills fan, and like Bonnnovi also brace for the worst. I can think of too many other years- in fact, probably 8 or 9 of the last 14 years- where I too though the Bills had a legit chance 7 weeks into the year. In that time frame, it’s yet to work out. I hope this year is different, but Im not holding my breath.

  38. The Miami Dolphins are underrated on this site.

    Record 3-3
Lost to Buffalo and (barely) Green Bay
Beat New England and Chicago (both convincingly)

    Defense YPG – 4th
    Offense YPG – 12th

    PFT Power Ranking – 19th

    Go figure.

    PhinsUp^

  39. It’s hard for me to see the 49ers losing to anyone outside of at Seattle in the playoffs after watching them waste Dallas week 1 and holding Philly’s offense to zero points in week 4, especially doing it without Bowman, Aldon Smith, and Glenn Dorsey as well as Anthony Davis. As long as the 49ers stay ahead of Seattle in the race for homefield in the playoffs, it’s hard to pick against them representing the NFC in the Super Bowl. Nobody is adding the talent they are down the stretch and they’re past the really hard stretch of their schedule.

  40. BUT WHERE ARE THE DOLPHINS??
    _____________________
lets revisit this in 5 weeks
but trust me PFT will find a way not to cover it. After New England squeaked by the 31st ranked offensive team last week I have no problems seeing them drop 4 out the their next 5 games. Sure they should eek out another close one over imploding Chicago but do not see them beating Denver, Colts, Lions or Packers.

Dolphins should beat Jags and the halfback starved Bills at that point maybe PFT will quietly whisper “oops we need better football guys” but really doubt it.

  41. Sad Viking trolls after 7 weeks are only left with the Packers will lose in the playoffs. How embarrassing for you after everyone in here listened to all your offseason boasting. Karma is a…you know the rest. Embrace The Suck!

  42. It’s already been determined that Denver will be playing Dallas in the SB. The fix has been in for a long time. Denver will win by a huge margin, Megahead will be crowned the “greatest alien to ever play the game”, Dallas will be dethroned as America’s team, and the money will roll in like the tide. The poor officiating this season is all designed to make sure the Seahawks DON”T get back to the SB. Mark my words…I’ll be back here in February saying “I told you so!”

  43. ^Seattle fans already coming up with excuses for not repeating, and of course it has nothing to do with the ability and performance of the team…

  44. How many more losses will it take before viking fans just go away? Find something else to do with your miserable lives instead of trolling packer stories.

  45. This is what parity looks like. There’s not a single team that’s a shoo-in to win it all, not even Denver. I think the team that suddenly gets hot in December and stays hot throughout the playoffs is the team that will take it all. Hopefully it’ll be my Patriots, but we’ll see.

  46. “Looking at the schedules, I’m going to go out on a limb and predict 11-5 for GB.
The Packers have lost two game at the beginning of the season while trying to learn their new 4-3 defense and new Capers schemes.which of the following teams will beat them to total five?
    @New Orleans
    Chicago
    Philly
    @ Minn.
    New England
    Atlanta
    @ Buffalo
    @Tampa Bay
    Detroit

  47. Some 49er fan brought up that they were shorthanded when they beat the Eagles, and neglected to mention the Eagles were without 3/5 of their offensive line. They also didn’t have starting linebacker Kendricks….I think if this game were played in Philly, with our offensive line, Eagles win.

  48. You might want to let December play out before you pencil in the Cowboys or the Lions for anything.

  49. Logical…Rgknees career record is 13-17. He is not even a career 500 qb when he is healthy and yet you are gonna sit there as say no one can beat the dead skins when he is on the field? You cannot be serious. I know you are 12 years old and all but how deluded can you be ? You are more deluded that cowboys fans who think their team being relevant before November and December means anything

  50. Cowboys look good, and we don’t lose in November often, so we are on pace for a run. Things that concern me are Philly and injuries. By the time we play Philly they may be full strength. 9ner fans keep referencing week one, but it was week 1 we stumbled out the gate and have been progressing forward since, while the 9ners squeezed a few wins out to only get trounced the next week. Make fun of Romo all you want, but Kappy has a lot of Romo in him.

Seachickens are cooked, so really even if we don’t win the east, we are a shoe in for wild card, prolly gonna be decided in our last game against Philly.

Also, stop this, your team hasn’t beat a team with a winning record crap, remember we are contributing to another teams losing record.
