Broncos table contract talks with Demaryius and Julius Thomas

Broncos boss John Elway earned his reputation as a closer, primarily for landing quarterback Peyton Manning in free agency.

But he’s going to have plenty of work to do this offseason to maintain that image.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Broncos have tabled contract talks with both wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas, as both play out their contracts this season.

They’ve negotiated with both players, but with no resolution imminent, have decided to wait until the offseason.

That’s a bold play, considering they’d have to get at least one of them done to be able use the franchise tag on the other, and both sides know that.

There’s also the small matter of wide receiver Wes Welker’s expiring deal, but he won’t be nearly as expensive or difficult to reach or replace.

It’s a risky hand of cards, but Elway plays at the high stakes table, and is used to winning.

  1. They can’t pay everyone… Unless the Broncos cheat the salary cap again like they did in the ’90s.

  2. If I had to bet, I would guess long term deal for D Thomas and franchise tag for J Thomas. D Thomas is a long term keeper regardless of the keeper. J Thomas is benefiting from Peyton (who has couple of seasons left at best) knowing how to use him

  3. This is the yr Peyton has to get it done. They look like the best team in the nfl but he’s not getting any younger and its gonna be tough to keep a team of this caliber together in free agency…

  4. No way denver is going to be able to sign them both. They have Von miller coming up next year too. Hope you enjoyed the ride donkey fans cause your salary cap predicament is going to drop you back down to the bottom of the division.

  5. oh please
they will sign one and tag the other
welker will re-sign at a lower rate or retire due to the head injuries….
if one isnt smart enough to sign then he will wind up like decker. He played his cards last year and look what it got him?
good money on a crappy team with a crappy QB

  6. Ask Eric Decker how important a good QB is. Anyone heard his name since he left?
Better get it this year Donkeys because you are on the path to salary cap hell.

  7. Just circumvent baby.

That’s how they won their two Super Bowls, by circumventing the salary cap.

  8. D Thomas balled when Tebow was the QB you ignorant bystanders. The Broncos need to seriously consider parting with Manning win or lose the SB. I would rather have both Thomas’s the next 5 years vs. Manning for 1 more year.

  9. After this year Manning retires which frees up 20 million dollars just on his salary. Then Denver will have their money to sign both . Wes Welker will go as well which will help sign a offensive or defensive lineman in free agency. Brock Osweiler will have had another year under his belt learning from Manning which will help. Granted he is no Manning with put a doubt but he will have their pieces in place to help him. What young qb wouldn’t want to have the type of weapons like he could have

  10. Demaryius is good no doubt. he played good even with Tebow. Julius? no so much. Peyton makes him look good.

  11. Hilarious how you all have become cap experts. You obviously know nothing about the cap, nor do you know anything about where the Broncos are at with the cap. They will be able to sign one, tag the other and all will be well. No worries here in Denver. They have some VERY friendly cap contracts

  12. Lemme think, prior to Manning, didnt Elway and Denver take the AFC West and win a playoff game with Tebow? You really shouldnt be allowed to post here.

  13. This is no big deal. They’ll stay if Manning stays and smartly go, if Manning retires and they win a superbowl.

They can sign muli years in Denver then have Brock throw them the ball or go to different teams where they can be studs, or sign 2 year deals if Manning were to stay and be studs in Denver, for as long as he’s there UNTIL they find a quarterback worthy.

  14. They could just cheat like they did to win the other super bowls… and of course they are the only team to have been caught and fined for taping other teams practices.

  15. Ask Eric Decker how important a good QB is. Anyone heard his name since he left?

You’re right. But it’s also about learning the system. And let’s face it, Eric Decker is playing for my team as a #1. He’s not a #1 receiver. Having said that, put one or two of these monster receivers from the Broncos on the Pats and they’d make it look it easy, too.

  16. Man, some of you people have ZERO clue as to how the salary cap actually works. And you’ll be the ones here making butthurt comments about “cheating the cap” when Denver re-signs both players in the off-season.

  17. I’ve been going through this salary predicament as a Denver Broncos fan for a little bit now.
The only way I think we can keep both of them is if Manning takes a pay cut to keep this team around him. Which I think he would be willing to do.
Manning still wants to play, and he wants to win. The only way to do that is if he takes a significant pay cut to free up cap space for both the Thomas’, and Von Miller, Chris Harris Jr.
If that doesn’t happen it is going to take a lot of creativity in the front office to keep them all.

  18. Maybe megahead restructures his contract, and leaves a few bucks on the table to re-sign the players who help him pad his stats. Then again, he never has left a cent on the table, so why would he do it now.

  19. Manning is the X factor in all of this. He takes a pay cut and the team thrives for 2 more years.

The leverage Elway has is that he knows Peyton loves the game more then the money. Peyton will play for as long as he has the weapons that allow him to thrive.

His will to play is greater then his need for $$$.

  20. Just my opinion, I think Manning would take a pay cut, even more so if they win it all. Then again, if they dont, I cant see him wanting to go into next year without his current receiving core. Hard to imagine Manning potentially going out with bad seasons as his last memory. There are few players that do it, and can afford to do it, solely for the love of competition. Manning, Brady, and when the time comes Brees and Rodgers are some of the players I see like that.

The Broncos are currently chewing 108.5M off the cap for 2015, which should be around 140M. They should be able to move around fairly well.
