Cardinals beat Eagles 24-20 in desert thriller

Getty Images

With the Cardinals and Eagles entering Week Eight with two losses between them, their matchup had the makings of a playoff preview.

Let’s hope that’s the case. Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews couldn’t get his feet down in time on the final play of the game, allowing the Cardinals to go home with a 24-20 win that came after a seesaw second half that saw the lead change hands multiple times.

The last change came when Carson Palmer dropped an absolutely perfect pass into John Brown’s hands on a third-and-five with just over a minute left to play in the game. Brown was behind the Eagles defense at the time and sprinted 75 yards for a game-winning touchdown that stood up after the Cardinals foiled two throws into the end zone before Matthews almost stole the game.

It’s fitting that the biggest play of the game was a pass because there were a ton of them. Palmer and Nick Foles combined to throw the ball 104 times during the game and Foles set an Eagles record with 36 completions in his 62 attempts. Neither team was able to sack the opposing quarterback, which meant that both quarterbacks had time to turn a penalty-filled first half into a fairly thrilling second half.

Palmer hit Larry Fitzgerald for an 80-yard touchdown, although that mostly came thanks to Fitzgerald’s work after the catch, while Foles found Jeremy Maclin for a 54-yard touchdown that gave the Eagles a 14-10 lead in the third quarter. The pass to Brown was the prettiest of them all, although the Eagles did their best to top it before the end of the game.

The win leaves the Cardinals with a 6-1 record and a firm hold on first place in the NFC West. They’ll have another potential playoff preview in Dallas next week and the Eagles will surely be hoping for the same Cardinals result against their divisional rivals.

When the Eagles look back at the loss, they will likely focus on three turnovers that helped the Cardinals at points when it looked like the Eagles were going to take control of the game. Some may also point to the third-and-one play near the goal line in the fourth quarter that saw the Eagles hand the ball to LeSean McCoy out of the shotgun. McCoy was stopped short of the line of scrimmage and the Eagles had to settle for a field goal that made the score 20-17.

That wasn’t going to be enough to keep the Eagles in the lead, however, and those turnovers and missing the chance to get in the end zone will be on a few minds during the long flight home.

  1. I guess being on the winning side of terrible officiating has some Karma associated with it. Eagles were jobbed throughout this game. Did this ref staff get the memo about hands to the face being emphasized in the preseason, and not week 8?

  2. The great Chip Kelley was outcoached today by the Cardinals defensive coordinator lets keep it real ! After tomorrow night eiggles 2 out hahahahahah!

  3. Cary Williams will be one of the first players cut this off season. Old, overpaid, talks trash and cannot play. Bush league.

Congrats Cards, you earned this one. This felt like a playoff game the way it came right down to the wire. Maybe we’ll see you again in January.

  4. I love the meaningless little sad Washington Racist Name fans make comments on the post of a team that OWNS you. This was a tough game with two play off teams that should have been won by the Eagles but you have to give the Eagles credit. Please you unWash masses, let the adults comment on this post. Go back to hating native Americans and losing games, what you do best chumps.

  5. It’s awesome Fox decided to put the Pats and Bears on here in West Palm and the Treasure Coast even though Miami and Ft Lauderdale got to see this game. Losers.

  6. My favourite sequence of the year maybe was the Cardinals bringing the house on the last two plays. No weak prevent, no soft zone, just straight up aggressiveness to win the game. Loved seeing that.

Cards got ROBBED by the refs in Philadelphia last year.

Remember the Colts game earlier this year? Remember those calls vs. Washington earlier this year?

The Eagles got away with a ton of holding even when they weren’t being flagged.

Don’t you dare try to complain about officiating.

  8. This isnt the first time Chips offense was exposed. Anybody remember the niners game earlier this year?

But seriously w a college offense and qb leading it w a pop-gun arm as well as a lack of defense lets just say the Eagles may snare a wild card but shouldnt be expected to make much noise thereafter.

No one has it better, but you have to resort to hoping a team you can’t beat loses, to help your team that can’t beat anyone but flimsy teams ha?

  10. The next time Ron Jaworski says Foles is better than Russell Wilson show him the last 2 throws. He couldn’t even keep it in the field of play.

  11. Not a bad Defensive performance from the Cards who played the entire 2nd half without PP7.

  12. The Eagles have been over rated all season. They’ve beat one team with a winning record, the 5-3 Colts, by three points. Their media promoted Genius Chip Kelly lightning fast offense is one dimensional with almost twice as many passing attempts as rushing. And even the pieced together Dallas defense almost the worst in history a year ago is rated higher. No amount of thumbs down can change those statistical facts.

  13. Chip Kelly lost the game. First off, Chris Polk had the first down on the second to last possession on the goal line, and got a horrible spot. Why there was no challenge, I will never know. Then you line up in shotgun and give it to McCoy? That gave Cards more time to throw him for a loss. I would have left Polk in there as he was moving the pile forward.

  14. What a big win today for Big Red! Get that head-to-head tie-breaker for home field. We NEED to beat Dallas to get closer to home field with another tiebreaker. Hope Peterson is all right. Defense is continuing to dominate and offensively, the Cardinals are much improved in year 2 of Arians’s system. Funny how the evil media continues to spew their lies of Fitz beign traded. Guess what you devils, he’ll stay in AZ and win the Super Bowl this year! #RedbirdsareRising, #NoFlyZone, #BigRedCurtain, #BrucetheArianNation, #TheArianBrotherhood, #Arianzona #Quest4HomeSB

    ————————————-
They didn’t “expose” the Eagles’ offense. Nick “Back Foot” Foles was just atrocious (maybe “Throws it out of Bounds” is a more appropriate nickname, make your pick). Not to mention the secondary having no wheels. When you let Fitzgerald outrun you for 70 yards you know it’s time to get faster in the secondary.

  17. Hey Chip!!! When you have 3rd and inches… I have a genius idea… Let’s not get in shotgun and hand off the ball. There is this one play that 31 other teams know about. It’s called a ‘QB sneak’ Please learn this play. Thanks 🙂

You beat the same “flimsy” team we beat in the eagles, we were dominating you guys in that game and just choked. That will not happen again when you come to Levi.

  19. Lol at eagle fans complaining about the refs … did you think all season long you were going to get the wins with the refs help.
The last play holding by the Eagles OL … he grab the DL by the collar … No call so obvious.

And that’s the ridiculous comment of the day. And shocker……it’s from a Giants fan. Hey maybe you’re team will score a point this week.

  21. @nflfollower….

522 yards of offense is having your offense exposed? Are you commenting on an article about a game you didn’t see? We moved the ball with ease, it was the turnovers in the red zone that killed us.

That was a fantastic game though, should have had Polk run NOT FROM SHOTGUN at the 2 yard line.

  22. Mr. Wright 212 decides to show up again. Your still a phony why not go fix your Giants you know that’s the Eagle game that you disappeared on.

  23. Every Cardinals victory means less of a chance of Seattle repeating as division champs which brings me immense joy. Keep up the good work Cardinals.

  24. A few observations from and Eagles fan:

The refs certainly tried their best to destroy a perfectly good football game. The NFL has to start weeding out these flag happy refs who make the game more about them than the players. And this isn’t an excuse because both teams had bad flags called on them.

Foles needs to stop constantly drifting backwards in the pocket. Sometimes you need to step up and let the o-line ride their guys past. Also cut the ridiculous back-footed throws, he doesn’t have the arm strength to pull those off.

Nate Allen and Carey Williams need to be on the first bus out of town after the season is over. Allen constantly forgets the situation and gives up big plays and I haven’t seen Carey Williams lower his shoulder on anyone since he’s been here.

Overall they need to take care of the ball better and figure out a way to score TD’s in the redzone not FG’s.

  25. The Nick Foles myth is close to ending just like the Kirk Cousins one. Average backup QBs who people hyped up for some reason, and I think Chip Kelly will agree as soon as he can switch him out.

  26. Acee8842 had it right – “Chris Polk had the first down on the second to last possession on the goal line, and got a horrible spot. Why there was no challenge”

See you in Jersey. I will be in Section 117.

  28. Eagles have owned the Redskins? I understand you being aggravated with Redskins fans posting comments you poor sensitive Eagles fan but the truth is the Redskins lead the series 81 wins to Eagles 73 wins….oh one more stat for you Redskins have 3 Super Bowl wins Eagles have 0. Keep trusting in Chip you will never win one.

  29. I said in the off-season to some shehawks fan that their dynasty would fall apart and the cardinals would take their place in the division… so far so good and this is from a cowboys fan I loved the outcome

Wouldn’t hold my breath, because, as you know, NE can’t beat Seattle if they squared off, which I am sure is part of the impetus behind this comment ha.

  31. Foles is a terrible quarterback. The def is a dumpster fire. The genius coach is no genius and wants no part of the nfl anymore. He will be in florida or michigan next year. Pretty overrated squad. i posted earlier in the week that they would lose three of their next four. that’s one philly. Enjoy second place.

I’m gonna keep reminding your johnny come lately Dallas fans about 2007, because this season is going to end the same way for Dallas.

  33. What’s with all the eagles hate in the comments? All they’ve done is lose two games to bona Fidel contenders by less than a score.

    Stop your whining, haters.

  34. Long-time Cards fan; hat tip to Eagles squad. Play that game on a neutral field ten times and each team comes away with five. I’d not be at all surprised to see a rematch of the 2008 NFC Championship game. Same place. Outcome tbd.

Cardinals are as good as anyone in NFC at moment, but wish we had a real off the edge pass rusher.

Here’s something Eagles and Cardinals fans should agree: let’s hope the Cards bring Dallas back to earth next week.

  35. Fans that bleed green seem to have a tendency to act like rude fools in their own and other stadiums and take pride in it. Also, these fans afflicted with this disease forget how to use Google or any other search engine and babble inaccurate facts and stats. The only disease known to be worse is the one where you bleed blue and silver….

  36. Bruce Arians is a boss. If the Bears had hired him instead of the Canadian Clown, with the talent they have, they would be neck and neck with the Packers for the division lead instead of fighting the Vikes to stay out of the cellar. It’s sad when an NFL owner is outclassed by the Bidwells but in this respect, Arizona absolutely made the right call.

The eagles did win won thing, they had more fans in the Stadium than Arizona did.

Either you are a liar or colorblind. It was all red, baby!

  38. And the Eagles lose to a team with a winning record. That hasn’t happened since….well….just about every time they face a good team since 2001!

  39. That pass to Brown was funny Eagles. Like dudes your up by 3 and let that guy get behind you with 90 seconds left on 3rd down?. At least force him to make a play with some contested coverage. That’s some bad D right there. I give it to the Cards though , as a Hawks fan the Cards are tough SOB’s and for sure are playing better than us and the Niners. The back half of the season should be interesting if we can stay in it.

  40. @nohopeleft

Overrated? Maybe? But you’re a sore loser Giants fan who’s team couldn’t score point against the “overrated” eagles. And you hid like a girl after that shutout loss. Now all of a sudden you wanna talk.

    Giants stink

  41. I think the Cardinals have it better because they’re in first place, well ahead of the 49ers.

  42. The refs did keep this game close both ways. Didn’t help either team just dragged the game out. No one cares how many trophies you have if it wasn’t in this millennium. Ill take it from giants fans cause they’ve done it, but skins and cowboy fans? Gimme a break, you know you’re a bunch of losers

  43. Cards season ticket holder here. I can state that without a doubt Cards fans outnumbered Eagles fans at least 3:1 at University of Phoenix Stadium today.

  44. Deone Bucannon took out Maclin and PPeterson with the crown of the helmet to the earhole and those myopic Officials couldn’t find a flag?

The laundry in that game was absurd.

Must’ve been a flag quota involved, with commissions attached.

Pathetic to call roughing the QB on several of those calls and miss a blatant head shot by Deone.
    Explain that one to Peterson.

  45. Had a great time at the game. We fans knew it would be settled in the last few minutes…we’re used to it. Loving the Cardinals D-fence!!!

  46. The losers are the ones with 0 rings! When you go to the Redskins and Cowboys facilities they have their Lombardis displayed for all to see what a winning legacy is about. We have Super Bowl champion players in the hall of fame….makes you wonder why any Eagle should be in the hall of fame when they could never seem to be good enough to win it all. Maybe we haven’t won a Super Bowl since the 90s but at least we have won multiple ones….
Oh by the way how many has the Eagles won again?
    Who’s the losers?
    HTTR

  47. Pin this on Kelly…you HAVE to challenge that run by Polk. It looked like a TD from the replay..at worst a 1st and goal from the 1/2 yard line.

  48. This was a great game between 2 SB contenders. The Eagles SLIGHTLY out-played the Cardinals, and lost the game with the 2 turnovers within the Cardinals 5 yard line when going in for a score.

And CHIP needs to learn to use the red flag. 3 times he should have.

  49. No one reason the Eagles lost this one, but a bunch: 1. Chip Kelly got out-coached by Arians; 2. You don’t run out of the shotgun on third and inches; 3. You don’t have a barely second-year starter throw 62 times – the odds will always be against you; 4. Our secondary stinks (always has, always will); 5. Over 100 yards of penalties is very hard to overcome. Focusing in on one reason is stupid.

  50. Tough loss. First, Chip’s offense is predicated on not turning the ball over, especially the QB. Philly had three turnovers while in FG range. Second, although not an excuse, the officiating was terrible, but it should never have come down to officiating. Third, Why did Chip Kelly not challenge the spot on the 3rd and 1 run at the goal line, when Polk clearly picked up the 1st down. Last, how does Nate Allen let the receiver get behind him when defending a 3 point lead with less than 2 minutes remaining. My biggest take away from watching Philly this year is that Nick Foles is not good enough to lead Philly to a super bowl. I have been a huge Foles supporter, but with better QB play, the Eagles would be 7-0, vice 5-2, and the defense and special teams enabled them to win 2 of those 5 games. I think it is time for chip to pull the trigger and give Sanchez a chance. I just don’t think Foles can get it done.

  51. I have no idea in the entire world why Chip Kelly didn’t challenge that 2nd down run by Polk which clearly shows on the replay he stretched the the 1/2 yard line and would have been a first down. Of all the mistakes by the Birds yesterday – that lack of challenge was mind numbing.

  52. When you’re history is so much better than you’re present then you really have nothing to look forward to. The calendar will turn to December soon and we all know what happens to those lowly, fake cowboys.

    @chris ^

You were either playing madden, or listening to the game on the radio lol

You must be referring to those close-up shots Fox insisted of showing during the final drive, where just about every Philly fan in the stadium got airtime. I am referring to the wide angle shots that showed a sea of red throughout. But I can understand how you might be manipulated into thinking Philly fans actually traveled well on Sunday. Fox sure wanted you to.

  54. Wow lots of childish fans that watch the NFL and need to grow up or learn how to act before posting on a forum. The eagles are 5-2 and beat themselves with a fumble and interception within the 10 yard line of scoring. It was an exciting week and the Eagles move onto next weeks opponents. No need to make wild/crazy/out of line predictions based on hate.
