Chip Kelly “chuckles” at trade rumors

The Eagles reportedly are interested in Bucs receiver Vincent Jackson, and they’re looking for a safety who’ll be an upgrade over Nate Allen, who was caught flat-footed and burned by Cardinals receiver John Brown for the game-losing touchdown pass on Sunday.

But the Eagles aren’t admitting to it.

A team source directly disputed to PFT the report about interest in help at safety.  On Monday, coach Chip Kelly downplayed any and all trade talk during an appearance on WIP radio.

I listen to them and chuckle,” Kelly said of the reports.

It’s possible that the reports of interest in Jackson come from the Buccaneers, who possibly would like to get a viable offer for him before Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET, but the Eagles were — and presumably still are, after Sunday — interested in finding a safety to pair with Malcolm Jenkins.

Is it really a surprise that the fast-talking, frenetically-brained Kelly would constantly be searching and scanning for ways to get more pieces that would further shape the roster into the team he envisions? The offseason move for running back Darren Sproles validates Kelly’s willingness to make deals.

Part of making deals is making good deals.  By downplaying the reports, Kelly and company have a chance to buy low, if/when the phone rings between now at 4:00 p.m. ET.

  1. He better stop chuckling. Did he see the game winning touchdown where Nate Allen blew his coverage yet again? He has had an awful career in Philly. At this point I would trade Allen for a wet diaper and a 7th rounder.

  2. ” The offseason move for running back Darren Sproles validates Kelly’s willingness to make deals”

That’s like saying a team trading down or up in the draft shows their willingness to make deals.

Every team in the league has some level of willingness to “make deals”. But there is a pretty big difference between trading a low round draft pick for a proven player in the offseason and trading for a skill or impact position player with half the season gone.

How often has that worked out?

  3. I chuckle at a shotgun draw on the 1 yard line. Shocking, it was stuffed! Chip Kelly has no clue when it comes to red zone offense. The worst I’ve ever seen at it.

As for the secondary….. Jenkins is the the only one that is worth anything. Fletcher, Allen, and Cary Williams hopefully all get their walking papers this offseason. Cary Williams is one of the worst football players in the league, not to mention a total punk. Amazes me that he gets paid for what he does on Sunday’s.

  4. Karma coming back to bite the Eagles. Nate Allen was acquired from the 2nd round pick they got from the Washington R’words in the McNabb trade. Got a bust for a bust. Karma. Trade him to the Chiefs; let Fat Andy have him.

  5. Kerry Rhodes is available. Doesn’t matter if you agree with his alleged orientation, that brother can play. I know he can play better than the guys the Eagles have now.

  6. The receivers aren’t the issue on offense; it’s the guy throwing the ball to the other team.

Now defense, it makes complete sense to look for a replacement for allen. But you had all summer and preseason to get a replacement. In season will be tough.

But at least the Eagles are getting some production from their number one draft pick, Marcus Smith. Oh wait…

  7. I would rather trade for a safety over a WR. Truthfully, the safety cost them the game. No excuse for that mistake with a 1 minute 30 seconds to go and a 3 point lead.

  8. As much as I’d like Vincent Jackson, this team desperately needs another safety. Nate Allen cost us the game vs. the Cardinals…and nothing about him is better than average. He can’t run well, can’t hit real well, can’t cover real well.

  9. I laughed when I saw the Seahawks in that list of “interested teams”. They were heavy at receiver before trading Harvin. Somebody’s making up stories in order to drive up the price on VJax.

  10. VJax is a catch and fall on the ground guy. If you want yards-after-catch, he is not your guy. He has laid down on this team the last couple of years. He wouldn’t last a season under Chip’s offense cause he doesn’t really want to work. He’s a pay-check player. Nothing more, nothing less.

  11. Vincent Jackson tore it up last year. Dude has big play/catch capabilities all day long but, it’s been pretty clear by his use so far this year that he’s not part of the long term plans under the new regime. He also doesn’t have a competent QB throwing him the ball. Tell me that guy won’t succeed if pair with someone like Brady or R. Wilson.

  12. WELL, its that time of year again when REDSKIN and GIANT fans go from talking about the season to talking about their trophy cases.

NYG and DC football teams, your season is over!

  13. As a Giants fan living in Eagles country I quickly grow tired of 99% of the team coverage. I have to admit that I get a kick out of Kelly’s press conferences though. He’s pretty candid. The Chip love from everyone who covers the team grows pretty old though, so I’m sure I’ll be sick of him again soon.

  14. Didn’t they already have an awesome receiver with the last name “Jackson” and a “me”-complex last year, and got rid of him?

    What a dummy!

  15. Nick Foles has 9 interceptions this year and people blaming Nate Allen because of one play. With Nick Foles playing like this, you’re not going to the playoffs. No way, no how. That 5-2 record should be 2 – 5. You’re done!

  16. “Part of making deals is making good deals.”

No. Necessarily, part of making good deals is making deals. It does not work the other way around. Making deals does not necessarily mean you make good deals eventually.

If you want to be a talking head, then you need to tighten up your game.

  17. Remember those cartoony cards Chip Kelly was flipping around on the sidelines last year, like he was selling carwashes to help pay for a new volleyball net at the high school?

We chuckle when we remember those days.

  18. Kelly will never admit that dealing DeSean Jackson was a mistake. Keeping the safety occupied is paramount for running an offense……even genius Chip Kelly knows that now.

  19. These “Jerk-weeds, Dallas, Washington & New York Giants Fans,” I understand their reasons and comments, but us Eagle Fans, “Where the hell are you coming from?” We were 3-4 this time last year and went to the playoffs. Get real! As a long time, 50 years, Eagles Fan, you “Fair Weather Fans, Simpletons,” ought to follow a team like the Giants, after all, “They won 4 Super Bowls.” What happened to Loyalties and Devotion? Chip knows what he’s doing, “Obviously, you don’t!” You’ll probably follow this years Superbowl team, next year, anyway…

  20. I think they are fine at WR, but they desperately need help in the secondary. VJAX would be nice, but not neseccary. The question is: What is their biggest need, CB or Safety? I would love both, but I am sure it will cost them a lot for either.

  21. Loss falls on you, Chip Kelly. You for some reason forgot to challenge a just prior to 2 min warning bogus spot inside the opponents 1 yard line with a challenge that expired seconds later and a time out you never should have later needed. Review would have provided for first down that would have killed off game, possibly touchdown. You then ran into line for loss, kicked field goal and gave the ball to Arizona with plenty of time–for no reason.

Game day managing loss. Chuckle all you want, this defeat falls at the one in the mirror.

  22. sorry, chipper. your major mistake this offseason was not upgrading the safety and cornerback positions. so when you say you chuckle, you ought to hear the opposing offensive coordinators…..

that being said, even with the weak secondary, just anywhere near close to elite qb play and the eagles win by two touchdowns. that game is on nick, not nate allen (who should have been gone two or three years ago despite the fact hes a nice man and a hard worker).

  23. The Bucs can go ahead and pack the rest of this season in and may as well go ahead and unload Jackson. He’s not doing us any good because we have no line to protect the QB to get him the ball. While we’re at it Chip, we have a guy named Goldson that can help you out in the secondary as well.

  24. Repost…

the only team in the NFC East to never win a superbowl
    ===================
The idiot excluded the 3 NFL championships that they won. Oh – I guess they don’t count?? Probably a closet Cowboys fan!

  26. I had to chuckle at his comment that he didn’t try the QB sneak at the one yard line because he tried it once last year and it failed. So 31 other coaches can run that and you can’t, Chip? Offensive genuis, my foot.

  27. I think the Vincent Jackson talk may be real considering Riley Cooper hasn’t shown up yet this year…I guess all the money we paid him is holding him back. We need a big body who can fight for the ball in the end zone, and it hasn’t been Cooper or Ertz (who probably has to stay in and block)…as for safety help, my dog is out looking for a safety for this team, and he’s not chuckling.

  28. Charles Woodson would be a great short term solution and won’t cost much at all. To anyone who thinks we are missing Jackson, take a look at Jeremy Maclin….. We got rid of the right guy.

  29. He will chuckle all the way to michigan or florida after this yr. You can tell this guy hates the nfl and the philadelphia media.

  30. Luck has as many INT as Foles…where’s the article about him?
    ========================
Don’t be upset just because your QB has an article written about him that isn’t all fluffy bunnies and lollipops. Luck will have to throw 25-30 TDs for the rest of the year without any INTs. Foles will have to throw something like 110 TDs to match the TD-INT rate he set last year.

If you think about it, it is spectacular and it was the reason somebody wrote about it.

  31. Does anyone still think the “only team in the NFC east not to win a Super Bowl” or “College coach” comments are STILL original and/or funny?

Because that would just be sad.

  32. Does anyone still think the “only team in the NFC east not to win a Super Bowl” or “College coach” comments are STILL original and/or funny?

    ————————–

    yes!

  33. Chip does need more than Maclin… he needs a little bit better qb play and to call more power runs. Djax would be great for anyone willing to pay him 10mil this yr, but this offense has moved on. Guys open all over the place- just gotta get Foles to hit ’em.

  34. Getting someone like Vincent Jackson might be the difference between a quick exit in the playoffs and making a push at a Superbowl appearance. The situation at Safety is absolutely mind boggling. It’s not even arguable.

    ___________

It’s the gift that keeps on giving and never gets old. Get over it.

  36. Chip is a glorified college coach and the Eagles have 0 Lombardis….you know I’m right.
    LOLOLOL

  37. What do u know, giants and redskins fans crying about the 90s. And a cowboys fan saying the eagles havent won a super bowl. Well at least we have the most playoff wins, appearances and division titles since the last time the pathetic cowboys won more than 1 playoff game. 18 years and 1 playoff win and the word super bowl is in your vocabulary? And then you lose to the 3rd string qb of the worst team in the division. So funny I love reading cowgirl comments because it lets you know how bad they hurt.

  38. That last comment is sad ugly and weird all in one. Birds fans take it so seriously. Let me fill you in on a secret. When your team wins the super bowl nothing changes in your life. You don’t get any extra money or rings sent to your house. And believe it or not you have to go to work the next day and take care of your kids. If you have kids that you are accountable for. Eagles fans. A little over the top.
