Bucs send Mark Barron to the Rams

AP

As Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith tries to remake the defensive roster into a unit that will better employ his preferred defense, they’ve moved on from one of the safeties acquired by the prior Tampa regime.

Per a league source, Mark Barron has been shipped to the Rams.  The former Alabama standout was picked seventh overall by the Bucs in 2012.  At the Jimmy Graham franchise tag grievance hearing, former Bucs assistant Butch Davis testified that Barron was drafted specifically because of Graham.

Barron, a strong safety, started 16 games as a rookie, 14 in 2013, and all seven in 2014.

The Rams inherit Barron’s rookie contract, with runs through 2015 but which carries an option for 2016.  To extend the deal, the Rams will have to agree to pay Barron in 2016 the average of the 10 highest-paid safeties in 2015.

He’ll make the remainder of his $1.7 million salary this year.  Next year, Barron’s pay bumps to $2.3 million.

  1. Cheap young player on one of the leagues worst defenses…

Even Revis didn’t look good in Tampa…

Jameis Winston ill have weapons on offense though… kinda.

  2. Good get for the Rams if they didn’t go higher than a 2nd rd pick. Think the other side of the ball is the bigger issue.

  3. Traded for a 4th and 6th round pick. Surprising. I guess no love from Lovie for Barron.

  4. I guess in this day and age draft “busts” at safety average 90 tackles and 2 picks a year.

Barron is a solid safety and will do well in St. Louis/L.A.

  5. Last night the Redskin Potatoes beat the Dallas Cowboys 20-.

There, I just gave as complete a report about that game as you did about that trade.

    _____
Jameis Winston will get the coach that drafts him fired in one year.

  7. Huge bust. I remember this guy was supposed to be a Hall of Famer when we came out. The scouts were wrong AGAIN!

  8. You think the Eagles’ Nate Allen is hitting refresh over here every 10 seconds and just let out a big……WHEW!

  9. “The Minnesota Vikings never make draft mistakes.

    Christian Ponder.”

No no no no no. The Vikings intentionally decided to suck at QB for a couple of years as part of their great master plan. That was no mistake.

  10. And Mark was overheard as he boarded a plane to St. Lou saying under his breath “Thank you, Lord”.

  11. i like watching alabama players become busts too…but every school probably produces the same amount, it’s just too hard to be a successful nfl football player no matter what program you come from.

  12. I don’t know why the Bears didn’t jump on this. Their safeties are the worst in the league and it’s not even close.

Actually. Your report was better. We at least knew who got the better end. You should have said, the Redskin Potatoes and Dallas Cowboys played a football game last night and someone won.

  14. Heaven forbid the Bears get proactive and trade for a position they have NO IDEA HOW TO DRAFT. Why couldn’t they trade away Shea McClellin to a team that actually runs a 3-4 not a 4-3 he isn’t a LINEBACKER!! 6th Rd pick boom he’s yours.

A whole lot of hype for nothing I was praying the Chargers would of landed Doug Martin for Fantasy Football motives only.

You came out with him, then? Lol. Dude no scouting report said that.

  16. ^ actually, my report gives too much info because I say someone won. Maybe it was a tie

  17. Still young. Great pick up for the Rams. Fisher hasn’t done much with their 4th round picks in the draft anyway.

Never let the facts get in the way of your viewpoint eh?

“Barron, the No. 7 overall pick in 2012, has three interceptions, two sacks and 177 tackles in 37 NFL starts. This season, according to Pro Football Focus’ metrics, he’d allowed 16 catches in 23 targets for 173 yards and a 91.4 opposing quarterback rating. He had no sacks, hits, or hurries this year.”

  19. “The Minnesota Vikings never make draft mistakes.”

They intentionally drafted Troy Williamson and Erasmus James instead of Aaron Rodgers. Note to Vikings. Because you are such losers, you should try to make bad picks, because as a loser organization, you will mess that up and get a great player.

He had 88 combined tackles (solos plus assists) in each of the 2012 & 2013 seasons.

    He had 2 interceptions in 2013 & 1 interception in 2012.

    Those are facts.

  21. The Rams aren’t leaving St. Louis. New stadium coming soon to the STL riverfront…..but you don’t hear that being reported nationally like it is in STL.

=Totally agree especially with the Alabama defenders, other than Courtney Upshaw who has been a solid second rounder and CJ Mosley who looks like a future superstar Alabama has been a bust factory lately. Dee Milliner, Dre Kirkpatrick, Barron while solid never lived up to a top 10 pick, from what I see of Haha Clinton Dix he misses tons of tackles…
