Cardinals put away game-but-compromised Cowboys

At the midway point of their season, the Cardinals are the ones to catch in the NFC West.

Efficient on offense, stout on defense and opportunistic in the kicking game, the 7-1 Cardinals surged to a 28-17 victory at Dallas on Sunday. Quarterback Carson Palmer threw three scoring passes for Arizona, which put the game away with two TDs in 100 seconds in the fourth quarter.

The loss dropped Dallas, which was without starting quarterback Tony Romo, to 6-3. The Cowboys are now a half-game out of first place in the NFC East.

The pivotal play came with about 10 minutes left and the Cowboys trailing 14-10. With Dallas facing a 4th-and-1 at the Arizona 34, the Cardinals’ defense loaded the box to stop the run, with all 11 players within five yards of the line.

The Cowboys stuck with the run, with quarterback Brandon Weeden handing off to tailback DeMarco Murray. But the Cardinals stacked up the line, holding Murray short. The Cardinals then seized control, embarking on a nine-play, 65-yard march ending in a one-yard TD pass from Palmer to tailback Andre Ellington with 6:00 left in regulation.

Now, the Cowboys (6-3) were down 21-10, and they were left to lean on the pass, for better or worse. And on the second play of the ensuing drive, Weeden was picked for the second time, with Cardinals cornerback Antonio Cromartie hauling in an off-target pass intended for Cowboys wideout Terrance Williams.

Five plays later, the Cardinals sealed the deal, with tailback Marion Grice powering in from one yard out to extend the margin to 28-10.

The Cowboys would counter with a late TD, with Weeden hitting Dez Bryant for a three-yard score. However, the catch was only the second of the game for Bryant, who was rendered a non-factor for almost the entire contest. Weeden’s lack of command was a major cause; the Cowboys’ backup quarterback really struggled with his accuracy at times. The ex-Brown No. 1 pick finished with 183 yards and one TD on 18-of-33 passing.

In defeat, the Cowboys’ defense played fairly well. Cornerback Tyler Patmon picked Palmer on the first drive, returning it for a score. But the Arizona offense would soon settle down, and it showed a knack for moving the chains all day, converting 9-of-15 third downs.

And once the Cardinals’ offense started to move, the Cowboys were under pressure. The Cardinals’ stout run defense came up big again, holding DeMarco Murray to 79 yards on 19 carries. The Cardinals’ kicking game would come up big, too, with cornerback Justin Bethel blocking a field goal at the end of the half.

Still, the Cowboys hung around. And then, the Cardinals got that fourth-down stop early in the fourth quarter and got down to business, leaving Dallas in their wake.

  1. At least the Cowboys can look forward to two more wins this year.

Also, if the Cardinals receivers didn’t drop about 8 balls, the game would have been put away much sooner.

  2. This was as bad as it could be. And how does life look without Romo? I thought he sucked? I thought he shouldn’t have went back in the game last week? THIS was why he went back in the game last week.

If there was any doubt NOW, Romo is clearly needed (badly). And if you fans think we can win without him, you’re crazy. The Cards were better, but with Weeden under center, it made it that much easier.

Pack some good drugs Tony. You’re going to play next Sunday.

  3. Hmmm, I thought in preseason Jerry told is they could win with Weeden? The fact that they still ran the ball when the line was stacked is either poor play calling or a lack of confidence in him.

  4. Was hoping to draft defense next year…

We are going to definitely need a QB.

Two of em’ while we are at it…

    Dear Dallas…
Thanks for keep first place warm for us, we’ll take it from here.

    Signed
    Eagles.

With Foles out for season, and Sanchez at QB? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  6. Cowboys win that game by two tds with romo. Eagles fans please stop talking until you win a super bowl. That birds team is going no where. They have beaten no one with a winning record. College chip is a fraud.

  7. Nice win by the Cards – especially by the D. How is PP tackled by Witten on that blocked FG?

  8. Remember all last week when all the Dallas fans were talking about the Cardinal’s 32nd ranked pass D? Well, it ain’t ranked 32nd any more.

  9. youknowyouaintright=
seems to me the eagles beat indy, think they have a winning record. and since neither you nor i have had anything to do with winning a super bowl, i feel equally qualified to comment. college chip started last year 3-5. since then college chip is 13-4 including last yrs playoff loss (remember the playoffs?)

  10. The Cowboys should have drafted Manziel instead of getting Weeden. The Cowboys would have won today and would be better prepared for the inevitable Romo injury. Jerry Jones should have gone with his instincts. Matter all, they are the same instincts that have kept the Cowboys from a having a losing record in years.

I feel like today just reinforced why he shouldn’t of come back in next week. When a defense spends a week preparing for Weeden, he looks…well, like Weeden. When they spent the entire week preparing for Romo, Weeden looked like an NFL QB.

Not to mention, if Weeden is the QB last week, they run the ball in OT, they don’t throw it 4 times and go home. Unlike this week, they were gashing 8-9 yards a clip even when the skins were crowding the box

Why risk further injury when the back up is playing surprisingly well?

For the record, I said they should of sat him this week, and next week against the Jags (they should still win that game), then let him take the bye week, and come back after that (4 weeks after the injury)

  12. Dallas looked like it took so,e key injuries on defense. Even with Wéeden the possible loss of McClain and a few others is devastating if serious.

  13. Where’s Dr. Rustbelt? Behind one of the best offensive lines, with a top WR, Wedone still stunk it up!

  14. Plastic Man and Stretch Armstrong couldn’t have caught some of those balls from Weeden. Thinking Charlie Sheen’s character in ‘Major League’ before the glasses.

  15. Cowgirl fans are the best! That team beats a couple of sub par teams, and suddenly they are world beaters. They lose to the Skins, and the skins got lucky…. blah blah blah….. They lose to the cards, and they are saying that Orton could have won by two scores?? The optimism of these folks is beyond outrageous. Every single one of them.

  16. You mean the Indy game that the refs won for you. I don’t count that one. it is a loss for our purposes here. Yeah I know we don’t play and had nothing to do with the super bowls. Thanks For that. But you are certainly not as equally qualified as me to answer any football questions. My football acumen ( google that word ) is immense. Chip’ s record is inflated with wins over injury riddled and bad teams. He loses to good teams period. It is like reid never left. If both starting corners for houston don’t get hurt, the eagles would have lost that game today. Plus no cushing or clowney. Please. They would have been calling for college chip’s head. And you know I’m right.

Another in a looooooooong line of genius Cowboys fans!!

How many Cowboys fans does it take to change a light bulb?

None, they don’t change it, they just look at it remembering how it worked 20 years ago!!!

Nate Newton, Michael Irvin, Deion, Dez, Josh Brent, Joseph Randle………South America’s team!!

If college chip is a fraud, what does that make Jason Garrett? What does that make Jerruh the GM? Enough said!!

  19. Eagles lose their starting QB and beat the Texans on the road by 10. Cowboys need overtime WITH Romo to beat the Texans.

Eagles lose by 3 to the Cardinals on the road. Cowboys get blown out by the Cardinals at home.

I’ve been to Jerry’s World and it is one of worst home field advantage stadiums in the league. Making it that large and expensive gives opposing fans the opportunity to take that place over.

30,000+ Eagles fans coming down for the Thanksgiving game. Can’t wait!!!

you almost got it right. chips acumen is immense, and your self evaluation is inflated.

you really said your accumen is immense? a real internet genius are you? please….

  21. To say that I am in the heads of eagle’s fans is the understatement of the yr. I’m not even a cowboy’s fan. I just love watching eagle fans getting all riled up over a game. Nothing magical happens when your team wins a super bowl. Grow up guys. Kinda sad.

  22. Romo wouldn’t have made much of a difference. Cards are clearly the better team. Cards didn’t even play that well against the cowboys. Cards are 4-0 against an ok NFC east. There are 3 teams in the NFC west that are better than any in the east.

Did you cowboy fans forget the lost last week to a 3 string qb? A game which the boys had a better chance of winning if they would’ve left weeden in.

  23. SF is going to lose to the Giants, so to this point, only the Cards have beaten them. And Seattle can be beaten in Seattle, so the Giants will be in that game.

  24. I like how AZ still gets no respect. I am COOL WITH THAT. rOMO DOES NOT WIN THE GAME FOR dal. bUT IT IS OK FOR FOLKS TO THINK THAT. THAT IS EXPECTED OF A COWBOY FAN.

  25. LMAO. People propping up Romo because Weeden sucks. Neither one of them will ever win anything important in this league and neither will Orton. Cowboys should have been looking for a franchise QB 7 years ago.

  26. If there is going to be 30,000 Philly fans in Arlington for the thanksgiving game I hope that security will be checking them for concealed batteries. And I can only hope there is no one dressed as Santa Claus. Classless fans but not the worst. That would be giant fans. Only difference is at least the giants have won a SB. As a matter of fact so has Washington. So that would leave only 1 team in the NFC East not to win a SB. Wonder who that is? A) Cowboys B) eagles. Don’t hurt yourself thinking about it.
