Marcus Lattimore’s NFL career may be over before it ever started.
Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports that Lattimore is deciding whether he wants to continue to try to return from a serious knee injury sustained two years ago at South Carolina.
“Did not see Marcus,” coach Jim Harbaugh said after the game. “I’m sure we’ll have an announcement about that.”
The options for the announcement are fairly limited. Either the 49ers will place Lattimore, who returned to practice last week, on the season-ending non-football injury list — or they’ll place him on the reserve/retired list.
Lattimore drew rave reviews last week for his performance in practice from offensive coordinator Greg Roman. But soreness after two days of workouts prompted Lattimore to miss Friday’s session, and now to contemplate his future in football.
The 49ers took a fourth-round flier on Lattimore, a first-round prospect before the injury, in 2012. It was a low-risk/high-reward proposition that simply didn’t work out.
