For all the laughs we’ve had over the years for the Butt Fumble, the Jets were at least nearly competitive then.
Their latest masterpiece, the Butt Touchdown, may be an even better metaphor for what’s happening to them as their season swirls down the drain.
The Jets trailed 7-0 when a Chiefs pass at the goal line intended for Dwayne Bowe was batted away by Jets outside linebacker Calvin Pace. The problem was, it fell right into the lap of Chiefs tight end Anthony Fasano, who rolled untouched into the end zone for the most ridiculous touchdown of the day.
“It just popped into my hands,” Fasano said, by Brendan Kuty of NJ.com. He laughed when asked if he had ever had such a catch, saying: “Never, nope and I’ll probably never get one again.”
The Jets didn’t see the same humor in what Pace referred to as a “lucky play.”
“I thought that was typical of how the season has gone for us,” coach Rex Ryan said.
“The ball hasn’t really been bouncing our way,” running back Chris Johnson said, in the sad truth/pun of the day. “The ball gets batted up and falls right in his lap.”
In a season of ridiculous moments, the Jets continue to manage to top themselves. It just makes you wonder what they have in store next.
