Peterson will plead no contest to misdemeanor

With fewer than four weeks until the start of his trial on felony child-abuse charges, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson will reach an agreement today to resolve the case.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Peterson will plead no contest to one count of misdemeanor reckless assault.  The plea will not include reference to family violence or violence against a minor.

If the agreement is accepted by Judge Kelly Case, Peterson will pay a $4,000 fine, be placed on probation, and perform 80 hours of community service.  Technically, the adjudication of the case will be deferred for two years.

The next question becomes whether the NFL will impose a suspension on Peterson above and beyond the eight games he already has missed with pay.  Although Peterson agreed to the existing arrangement, the paid suspension helped the league and the team avoid a major P.R. mess.  Unless he would be suspended more than eight games for the incident, he should be reinstated for Minnesota’s next game against the Bears.

Regardless of what the NFL does, the NFL needs to move quickly and decisively.  Hopefully, the league has given careful thought and consideration to the situation.  Even more hopefully, the ultimate decision won’t create the impression that the NFL is flying by the seat of its pants, making things up as it goes.

The NFL surely has been aware of the possibility that Peterson would strike a deal.  The NFL needs to be ready to make a swift decision now that the case has been resolved.  And that decision needs to reflect the first implementation of rules and standards that will apply to all players like Peterson — especially since his decision to avoid a trial helped the league avoid several news cycles of further embarrassment.

  1. Pete Carroll is a 9/11 truther and is allowed to be the coach of the Seahawks. I daresay that (should) give the league a black eye.

As much as I despite the Vikes and think AP did indeed commit a crime here… guys have been suspended for far less for far more.

  2. There’s the problem with the existing DV policy. Peterson will only be guilty of reckless assault. No mention of family violence. Which means in our legal system, he didn’t commit family violence. So how can the DV policy apply if legally there was no DV?

  3. If all of this is true, he should be re-instated immediately for the exact reasons stated. He has served his punishment.

  4. This should come as no suprise to anyone that has been following this story and has been thinking with their head and not their uninformed opinion.

  5. Hopefully AP has learned from this first and foremost.

Secondly, what looked like a lost season now is at the very least interesting and possibly promising. Getting AP and Rudolph back for the next game, with Zimmers D? Dangerous.

  6. I agree the league should act swiftly, and their response should be simple–credit for time served AND AP forfeits (or better yet, donates to charity) some game checks. So yes he’d be eligible to play vs CHI but he should be lighter in the pocketbook when he does. I say a minimum 4 game checks.

  7. If this is what the prosecutors were willing to take then they never should have brought the case.

  8. Hmm, sometimes the shortest route is from point A to point B. If Adrian’s hope is to play football again this year then what he is doing is the shortest possible path to the field. However, if he wanted to prove his innocence beyond a doubt he should have went to trial. He admitted whipping the child and he cooperated fully with the investigation. At what point was it not clear that he was doing the right thing? Most criminals do not cooperate, while he did. I think a substantial fine is in order but he has missed 8 games now? Take the money he was paid and let him play out his last season with the Vikings…Minnesota will release him over the summer most likely because of his cap number and he will go to the Cowboys or Broncos in hope of getting to a Superbowl.

  9. If he wants to win back the fans, he better come out with a genuine, heartfelt mea culpa, admit he screwed up, and ask for forgiveness, as opposed to some PR-firm drafted gobbledegook.

  10. AD back.
    Rudolph back.
Zim’s D just getting started + leading the league in sacks.
    Teddy growing weekly

If Patterson can learn to run a route, the NFC North is on notice.

  11. Thats Texas for ya!! Don’t mess with Texas my ass!! Sorry but when you are paid it is NOT a suspension…the league better make him serve his 6 game UNPAID vacation! What a travesty!!

  12. People that ask for appropriate justice to be meted out upon Adrian are not “haters”; they remove themselves from fandom to be logical members of a just society.

I am a huge Vikings fan, and think his crime and the evidence we all have seen supersedes the charges and does in fact necessitate a full year suspension. At least.

Let’s be humans first and football fans second.

    SKOL!!!!!

  13. Further punishment is a must. At least a four game fine/suspension with credit for time served, meaning he’d be reinstated but surrender at least 4 game checks. Having said that, I think if I were the Vikings I’d consider dumping him entirely.

  14. And let’s not think for a minute that the crafty attorney of Adrian has not reached out to the league for general direction regarding a plea deal and the timeline impact of play eligibility.

This isn’t his first rodeo and the NFL is already in major damage control mode. They planned, prepared and will be ready for this plea deal.

  15. He has served no punishment as of yet…He was paid for every game….if Ray Rice can’t play then neither should AP….both these cases fall hand in hand with abuse….one abused a child ,the other,a woman….neither should ever be abused….if one of the players isn’t allowed to play neither should the other….And actually Ray Rice isn’t getting paid do he is serving/receiving punishment from the league

Technically, they could just take back the money and he will have served an 8 game suspension.

  17. I’m sure the league will botch this but under current policy he should be back for the next game. Whether he should be, well that is another question.

If AP returns he’s going to be an angry nightmare against the opposition. God save them.

  18. What would be even more unfair than him already missing 8 games for this would be for the league to make an immediate suspension ruling for additional time. Meanwhile, Legarrette Blount and Leveon Bell both were arrested for DUI and Marijuana possession, which are misdeamenors as well. Their suspensions will be reviewed in the offseason per normal protocall. If he gets an additional suspension for this, it should be at the start of next season like any other player. He’s already been treated unfairly as it is.

  19. Viking fan, but also not dilusional fan. I hope the NFL reinstates him immediately and the Vikes activate him. I don’t understand why so many people feel the need to have more suspension, jail time, when the initial grand jury didn’t indite, an over-zealous DA wants to clog up the legal system because he’s A.P. and here we are. No DA wants a plea deal if they think they can get a conviction so take his 8 games, his paychecks, his ruined image and be happy wit that. And why even bring the charges if you are willing to except this plea with zero new evidence one way or the other?

  20. livenbreathefootball, same way Ben got 6 games for allegations.

No way he should’ve been suspended until after the courts closed the case, he should only get time served and a fine.

  21. The NFL is a total joke this season. Yes, they will mess this up too . I can’t wait until Goodell has to testify in the ray rice suit. That will be real interesting.

Eight weeks off with pay does not count as a punishment (unless you are talking about the Vikings organization).
    ———————————-
Or does it? 8 weeks of his career taken away from him. Does he have bonuses for performance? Pro bowl? Playoffs? You cannot say what his true financial “suspension” is without seeing his entire contract. Not to mention his future earnings hurt due to the bad press from his misdemeanor.

  23. If this is what the prosecutors were willing to take then they never should have brought the case..

This is it. Great post. It obviously was NOT a slam dunk and the prosecution’s position must have been pretty weak.

  24. Seems like an appropriate legal resolution to the matter, and one any defendant with no significant criminal history, especially domestic violence, would have received in this type of case.

While I certainly won’t ever be a fan of AP again, he served his punishment under the NFL’s new disciplinary system and thus should be reinstated.

  25. How many players get suspended for a misdemeanor that isn’t drug related? A parking ticket is a misdemeanor. If they suspended everybody who has misdemeanors in the NFL….they’d be the USFL. Now whether or not what happened should be a misdemeanor is a different subject…and how people learn to parent is another subject.

  26. I still love Adrian Peterson. Yeah, he whipped his kid too hard, but how many of you have done something you regret where you went a little over the top? I know I have. Now everyone wants to crucify him. Stop and take a look in the mirror and ask yourself if you have ever done something society would disapprove of. Ask yourself if you ever did anything you really regretted. Most of you would answer yes unless you’re in denial and can’t accept reality. Forgive the guy and move on.

  27. Everybody seems to be forgetting that this whole thing started when this enormously muscled (including the one between his ears) man who earns his living running into, through and over people ANGRILY & VICIOUSLY BEAT A DEFENSELESS FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD – AND KEPT ON BEATING HIM!

How can anybody say that his impact on football in general, or the Vikings in particular, is more important than that? If it wasn’t for his athletic prowess, if he was just some blue-collar working schmuck we read about in the paper, we’d be horrified. As we all should be. The man is a brutal bully – who cares about his ‘career’?

  28. With no reference to family violence, the real loser in all of this is his son.

  29. Guilty! What happened minnesota trolls I thought he would skate this? Now he will have to deal with the failed drug test with the league. Another in a long line of stupid athletes who have no clue. Have people read his texts? Does he even have an 8th grade education?

  30. Well good now Peterson can resume his NFL career. However if I were the judge Adrian Peterson would be mandated to attend therapy. He needs it big time!

  31. How is being paid while not playing considered a suspension?
I guess it doesn’t really matter as it seems most of you don’t think he did anything wrong in the first place. AP still thinks he did nothing wrong, so I’m sure we’ll see this same story play out again soon. Let’s not forget he has lots of kids with all different mother’s and probably has a few more on the way. He has lots of disciplining to do.

  32. I have no problem with how the legal case played out. Pleading down the charges is very standard for first time offenders. Now that the legal side is over, the league should re instate him, and fine him 4-6 game checks making the punishment time served. Aside from trying to re populate the world in his image, this is the only black eye AP has given the league, and having do many children with diff mothers is not illegal. It might be immoral to me, but it’s not illegal. I can’t imagine he is stupid enough to repeat this offense, but time will tell. He’s lost millions in endorsements, take some game checks away and let him start the process of rehabbing his image as well as his family. Hopefully he takes care of rehabbing his family first.

  33. Beat a child with a switch that’s under 5 years old until it bleeds and you get is a paid vacation and a 2k fine.

  34. Eighty hrs. of community service. I suppose they’ll have him help out at a daycare center.

Like other fans, you’re awfully concerned about the impact on AP without a single mention of the actual victim, the child that he beat upon the legs and genitals, leaving open wounds and blood, and undoubtedly psychological scarring. Some people are actually trying to make AP a victim while completely ignoring his actions, or acting as if the severity of his actions is lessened because of a misdemeanor.

If he would have gotten completely off on a technicality (for instance, improper arrest procedure), would the abuse then not have occurred?

Regardless of whether or not it’s a felony or misdemeanor, the facts haven’t changed. Nor have the pictures. So I wouldn’t attempt to minimize what actually occurred because of a reduction to a misdemeanor.

And I’m not saying that he should never play football again, or that he is an evil person.

Any issues with earning power or any other deleterious issues affecting AP are his fault, not the media or anyone else. He created his own problem. Your protection of AP and painting him as a victim is just offensive and gross.

  36. There is no way his lawyer makes this deal without knowing first AD plays against Chicago and the Vikings say he will be reinstated, AD wants to play, my guess the NFL said it will be a 8 game suspension or less, that’s the only thing the NFL will take their time on deciding. I’m sure AD told his lawyer make the deal, it will be like going back to high school, I played for nothing.

  37. Regardless of everybody’s personal opinion, (and everyone has one) the judicial process is over. He was convicted of a misdemeanor and sentenced accordingly. The DA and the Judge accepted the plea deal, and so should the NFL and the Vikings organization. That is what our court systems are for. Now that it is all settled, let’s get back to what’s left of the regular season, and play Football! We are Fans not Judges.

  38. Average Joe: I’d like to retain your services to get my guilty self off or reduced charges please.

High Priced lawyer: Are you a celebrity?

    Average Joe: No.

High Priced lawyer: Do you have $100,000?

    Average Joe: No

High Priced lawyer: LOLZ. Say hello to Hernandez in the joint?

  39. The haters will never stop with the maligning, hang him up attitudes. AP has come a long way since August and time will certainly tell. Certainly, he has learned the hard way how to discipline his children ~ has gotten rid of “this was how I was disciplined” and has enlisted the aid of counselors and pastors. If people want to keep shooting off their mouths, so be it. Me, I think he will be taking positive steps from here on in. Who are we to judge? The act of forgiveness is harder than the act of retribution.

  40. No problem with the pleading down, I expected it. However, I hope 1) the judge increases the community service and 2) the NFL makes him pay an actual price for this. Otherwise, I think his “new attitude” about how to discipline his children will be short-lived.

I don’t think that Peterson should be banned from the NFL, and of course, change is always very possible.

Can you tell us how “AP has come such a long way since August”?

The mere fact that he has enlisted counselors and pastors doesn’t mean that he has changed. Don’t confuse activity with achievement. Additionally, successful change that you can trust occurs and is maintained over time. We are only talking a couple of months so far.

And let’s keep in mind that this is a guy who has a least six children with several different women, and didn’t even bother to meet one of his kids who was subsequently murdered at the age of 2.

Hopefully AP figures it out and gets good guidance from here on out.

And more important than Adrian Peterson’s well-being, which everyone is so focused on, let’s not forget the actual victim in this. I hope that his child turns out well.
