Ravens cut Chykie Brown, activate Terrence Cody from PUP

The Ravens are thin in the secondary at the moment, but they’d rather get thinner than go with the existing options.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens have released struggling cornerback Chykie Brown.

On its face, the move is justifiable, since he was torched against the Steelers Sunday night (but who among the was not). But his struggles this year have been persistent, as he also gave up a game-winning touchdown in the opener against the Bengals.

The Ravens are currently without starter Jimmy Smith (foot sprain) and started veteran Dominique Franks opposite Lardarius Webb last week.

The team announced later they promoted Tramian Jacobs from the practice squad to fill his spot.

They also activated defensive tackle Terrence Cody from the PUP list, and released tight end Phillip Supernaw.

Cody is recovering from offseason hip surgery, and has been practicing for three weeks.

  1. Chykie Brown never had the ability to run with NFL WR’s.
    Tramain Jacobs does.
So sure we assume the rookie will be in over his head, at least he does have the ability to run fast enough to do his job, and thus can be coached up…..that said, considering how poor the high end talent at safety is playing, i’m not hopeful.

How many tackles will Matt Elam miss before the staff instills in the kid he must approach the ball carrier on balance?

As nuts as this sounds at this juncture, when Smith and Asa Jackson team up with Webb we will have a top tier Cb group……..the safeties are in dire need of coaching, but Will Hill is certainly a quality starter.

  2. It’s very difficult to build and maintain a secondary that can withstand the exotic 5 wide formations, the oversized WRs and TEs, and the officials flag on every play

should add Webb to that list, dude was smoked all night.
Ain’t that the truth, I went into the game thinking “well at least we got Webby back there”. Steelers balled out Crown I give credit where it’s due.

  4. Webb has lost a step. How much do the Ravens miss Dennis Pitta again. Hip injuries are no joke. If he does play again, will he ever be the same? Ed Reed wasn’t, but still gifted enough to be a top player at his position just like Gronkowski. That guy is a freak.

  5. I was giving Ed Reed too much credit for how well the Ravens secondary played in the past. Teryl Austin was the Ravens secondary coach. He left with Caldwell to Detroit and is now their D.C. No surprise the Lions defense is playing well. One year as D.C. and I bet he’s already a candidate for a head coaching job. Players on the Ravens secondary look lost. Not to mention the lack of talent. Guys were never replaced in the draft or F.A. And you’re not going to find a quality corner in F.A. Not without paying top dollar.

  6. Big Ben has weapons. Three talented RB’s. And receivers catch the ball unlike Ravens receivers. Ravens have Owen Daniels and rookie Gilmore at TE. Daniels probably won’t be playing much longer. And Torrey doesn’t play like a #1 receiver. Ravens miss Ray Rice.

  7. 62 gets activated (a good thing) and his picture looks like someone who’s dog just got run over. Can’t wait to see Brown’s picture.

  8. Highly doubt the ravens miss ray rice- he averaged under 3 yards a carry last year and Forsett was just averaging about 5.6. They’ve lost a lot of other big names over the last few years but they always somehow find a way to stay relevant.
