The Dolphins have quietly become a contender in the AFC, thanks to a defense that’s shutting people down.

Cornerback Brent Grimes was the latest to be recognized, earning AFC defensive player of the week honors for his role in last week’s 37-0 pasting of the Chargers.

Grimes had two interceptions and was close to a third in the shutout, which seemingly beat the Chargers into submission.

He’s the third Dolphins defensive player to win the weekly award in nine weeks (along with Cameron Wake and Louis Delmas), which helps explain their 5-3 record and three straight wins.

They’re third in the league in scoring defense and yards allowed, and have multiple game-changing players, as the individual awards are showing.
