Jimmy Graham: It definitely wasn’t a push-off

AP

The Saints lost in overtime to the 49ers, but it looked for a moment at the end of regulation like the extra session wouldn’t be necessary.

On the final play of the fourth quarter, Drew Brees heaved a Hail Mary that fell into the arms of tight end Jimmy Graham in the end zone and the Superdome went crazy until they noticed a yellow flag on the field. Graham was flagged for pushing off 49ers cornerback Perrish Cox, ending regulation and setting the stage for the San Francisco win. Graham definitely used his hands while trying to gain better position over Cox, but Graham said after the game that he felt it was an incorrect call.

“It was definitely not a push-off,” Graham said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “I’m running down the field telling myself, ‘Whatever you do, don’t push off.’ It’s interesting how guys grab me everywhere on the field and I put literally two fingers on somebody and they make that kind of call.”

Graham, who said he felt Cox embellished his fall in hopes of drawing the flag, also tried another tack by complaining that flags are rarely thrown when receivers and defenders are jockeying for position on a Hail Mary.

“The general consensus is, you go down there, you can kick somebody in the chest and go up there and get it and you’ll be fine,” Graham said. “But apparently not.”

There’s nothing Graham can do to change the call now. The Saints, however, have to stop turning the ball over if they want to avoid hoping for miraculous endings and start playing like a team capable of making something of a season that hasn’t played out as anyone in New Orleans hoped coming into the season.

  1. I can’t stand either team but the refs jacked that up. Live, in real time I thought the call was great.

But it was a horrible penalty and cost the Saints a deserved win.

  2. he definitely pushed him, there is no denying that on the replay. But calls go back and forth. Last week Kaepernick probably scored. This week they got a good call.

  3. “I agree with Graham, there’s no such thing as offensive pass interference on a Hail Mary.”

    -Golden Tate

  4. More like a shove off. Ball would have been tipped had he not shoved the defender to the ground.

  5. Surprise that Jimmy would say that. Everyone watching does no agree. By the way, you and the Saints have had your share of calls to go your way into Dome.

  6. Boldin pushed off too. But NFL has to let niners win the game. Clearly it did not go both ways as Boldin pushes off constantly. But we can’t win with the turnovers!!

Refs can’t call that PI there. Had it been the WHINERS it would be a TD. I am 100% certain of that!!!

  7. No question Cox sold the call but it was a push off and wasn’t all that different than the call Boldin got early in the game.

It’s a fair argument to say if it was a weak call but every replay will show Jimmy’s arms fully extended so he did a pretty terrible job of not trying to push off.

  8. Can’t stand the saints, but that was a terrible call. Cox should be up for an academy award. Should be able to review the pass interference like Cfl does.

  9. “he definitely pushed him, there is no denying that on the replay. But calls go back and forth. Last week Kaepernick probably scored. This week they got a good call.”

Yep, refs have to survive too.

  10. There is absolutely no comparison from Boldin’s PI to Graham’s. Graham’s was called in a game deciding situation. You 49ers fans seem to love to talk about plays and bad calls that happen that really don’t have too much of an impact on the outcome of the game. C’mon now, that play is for the game right there.

Doesn’t matter cause the Saints will still win their division and the Niners will finish 3rd in theirs

You mean the NFC South i.e. worst division in the NFL. That division?

  12. I think the bright California sunshine is affecting all the 49ers fans vision cause Graham barely even extended his arms and Cox flopped to the ground worse Manu Ginobili…….

  13. And “I did not have relations with that woman” and “the check is in the mail” and “I am not a crook” and “I won’t….” You get the picture.

  14. Sucks to lose the game on a questionable call, huh Jimmy.

    ————————————————
Go troll your own team’s posts, not welcomed here, in Louisiana or at the Dome.

    You’re welcome!

  15. Ah yes I was wondering when we were gonna hear Jimmy Graham’s usual post loss temper tantrum. Didn’t he whine and cry after he got completely shut down by the Hawks in the playoffs last year too? The video doesn’t lie, he definitely did push off and like someone else said he really didn’t even need to due to him being much bigger than Perrish Cox.

Jimmy Graham has been and always will be a soft whiner. I see from these comments that his fans take after him on that, too.

  16. As somebody rooting for the saints, it definitely was a push off.

BUT the defensive back definitely embellished.

  17. It wasn’t a push off like:

    “I got 20 years but I swear I didn’t do it.”

“Honey, I woke up and she was just there.”

    “Officer, that’s not my weed.”

“Yes, I was drinking. But I only had 1 beer.”

“The Raiders are going to win the Super Bowl.”

  18. @Kimbo71006,

not trolling, but tough weekend in the Bayou. Horrible squib kick last night that led to a Tiger loss and OT loss today. At least you aren’t a Raider fan.

  19. Was it technically a push off?

    Yes.

Have there been literally hundreds if not thousands of more egregious examples of interference on hail marys that weren’t called?

    Yes.

  20. If anything Cox should have been called for unsportsmanlike conduct. Tough to tell in real time, but replay shows obvious dive. Not going to blame a loss on one play though, Saints lost the game because they played poorly in the first quarter.

  21. The irony is how much 9er fans were told to stop whining about the Brooks call last year and now look at all the whining when the call doesn’t go your team’s way.

And the elephant in the room is being ignored that the Saint’s had the 9ers and 4th and 10 and gave up a 50 yard pass because they lost Crabtree. That’s the real reason the Saint’s lost that game.

  22. You mean the NFC South i.e. worst division in the NFL. That division?

    ——————————————————
And your point is….a division win is still a division win and gives us a home game in the playoffs.

Who cares if the division is bad, not the Saints and not this fan. At least we’ll win ours, the 49ers won’t.

A WIN IS A WIN IS A WIN IS A WIN!

  23. Xnihilofan, ya I think that’s what I was saying the Saints will win the South. Just like somebody won the crappy NFC WEST for all those years. Historically the NFC South has been one of the more competitive divisions in football. But I really don’t expect you to actually know that……

  24. Saints didn’t deserve to win last year’s game and they didn’t deserve to win today. Sorry Saints fans go cry in your beer.

    —————————————————–
Saints lead their division and 49ers are what….third in theirs?? LOL

Saints nor their fans are crying!!

    GEAUX SAINTS!!

  25. Saints aren’t whining, if you read these posts, they are mostly from 49ers and other team fans, not Saints fans.

Boy, you guys are good at flipping the facts, aren’t ya!

Saints rule, 49ers drool – we #1 in NFC South, 49ers are #3 in NFC West – now, who exactly has it better than us – NOT THE 49ers…HA HA HA HA

  26. not trolling, but tough weekend in the Bayou. Horrible squib kick last night that led to a Tiger loss and OT loss today. At least you aren’t a Raider fan.

    —————————————————–
Sorry, bud. Didn’t know you were a fellow Bayou fan. Tigers did great, tough break. Saints did great, tough break. I prefer to look to the future and learn from the past.

LSU and Saints ROCK!! Saints will win the division, and get a home playoff game. Remember, other teams have made it to the SB with a .500 record. We’ll be fine, have the faith!!

  27. Saints fans saying you can’t make that call to decide the game? NOT calling the penalty there would have decided the game. It was an easy and obvious call. Brees fumble in OT was what lost that game for you.

SORRY WHINERS YOU ARE STILL 3RD IN YOUR OWN DIVISION!!!!! Someone still salty about last year

LADY YOU LOST TO THE 49ERS !!!
    HA ! HA !!!

  29. Boldin got called for a pushoff earlier in the game. The Saints were granted an extra timeout in the 4th quarter for no reason. Blown coverage gave up a 50 yard reception on 4th and 10.

Ironic how the Saints fans cry about the refs but the only time they beat the Niners recently was last year with a beneficial ref call. They owned you when you played in the NFC West and they own you now. Who dat whining? The Saints.

  30. @kimbo71006

Not a fellow Bayou fan but really hate Nick Saban and Lance Kiffen. I’m actually a Gator fan.

Reason I follow Bayou sports is a guy I listen to on Sirius is from Mandeville and sometimes he talks about LSU and the Saints.

  31. The right call was made, and it was clear as day it was a push-off. Sorry Jimmy, learn the rules of the game instead acting like faux victim. Also, why were the commentators saying it was “brave” of the refs for actually making the right call?

  32. Lol saints fans saying 49ers are third in their division as a defense to being 4-5 and first place is embarrassing and should be stopped.

  33. Good game, we’re both still alive in the playoff race, unlike you guys we will get some allpros back soon with a probowler to boot(Dorsey). We will be fine and would love to play you again this year!!! WE DAT

  34. PFT, can you do a story on the extra 4th quarter time out. Peyton clearly calls one, they initiate replay, and he gets it back… Inside of two minutes.

  35. ronfai That’s all you got!! Worry about your division!!!! GO CARDINALS/SEAHAWKS!!!

Hey don’t hate, you are barely 5-4 yourself. Really have grounds to talk yourself hahahaha….

The point is, we are #1 in our division!!! Good luck in 3rd place

    ________________________________

“….more competitive divisions in football..” –that’s a mere euphemism for saying “it’s average….but particularly bad this year.”

Win the South. Shoot go undefeated here on out. But everybody outside of NOLA has zero respect for the Saints if they go on the road…and surely will for the playoffs…..and it’ll probably be against SF. Just think SF with Aldon Smith, Patrick Willis, Bowman….and some guy named Brooks. So, go ahead…….win your division of hot garbage…it’ll just be a waist of your time.

  37. It was a good game. I still say if you call one PI, call all of them. Fair is fair. Mistakes did us in. We win out we win the division with a home playoff game.

We are a good team but you can’t have turnovers. Niners took advantage of the gift wrapped points and our defense. Their offense is weak!!

  38. I criticize the officiating a lot, but it was good to see them make this call correctly, even if they’ve missed it consistently over the decades on this type of play.

  39. LOL @ all these hawks and saints fans like neither have benefitted from calls. This one was obvious even if Cox oversold it but those tears taste delicious.

  40. Yes, it was. It was an unnecessary shove because at worst, a SF could get the INT but there wasn’t a decent chance that he’d have been able to return it.

  41. Gotta say the cardinals are the surprise team, Lions too. hope each win their division!!!! But carson palmer injury is big..

It’s a long season. I will let niners enjoy their win while it lasts. we’ll see in a few weeks who is in the playoffs!!!

Saints just keep improving. We are a young team, lots of change from the playoff season last year and injuries. This will make us stronger, 5 losses by 3 points or less.

  42. That call should have been made and it shouldn’t matter when it occurred in the game. The problem I see is that it wouldn’t be called on some teams. The money teams will get calls like that. Having SF out of contention (after questionable calls last week) is bad for ratings and nobody seems to want to win the NFC South so the Saints are still in the hunt.

  43. Where to start. Brook’s sack last year on Brees wasn’t a penalty. The push off called on Bolidn earlier in the game that negated a huge play wasn’t a push off either but guess what cry baby you can’t go whining just because the bad calls finally went against you for once.

  44. Xnihilofan, you have further cemented your lack of knowledge about football by way of your own comments. If we win our division, which I think we will, the 49ers will come back to the dome. That’s how it works in the NFL. Win your division and you get a home game. Let me guess, you think if the 49ers somehow have a better record than the Saints we will have to go to Levi ? Cause San Fran definitely isn’t winning theirs. Go back to watching tennis and golf buddy…..

  45. Magnumpimustache, you named all the things Gronk would do but you forgot the most important one…….# 5- Get hurt and be out for the season again and miss a bunch of big games. That’s the difference between Gronk and Graham. Graham plays a whole year with plantar facia foot injury that sidelines almost everyone including the great Antonio Gates and is playing right now with a sprained shoulder and still dominating. Graham > Gronk……

  46. It was definitely a push off. There was 3 49ers around Jimmy who didn’t touch him. It was very easy to see Jimmy extend his arms and push off with both hands in front of 2 refs. The rules favor receivers tremendously and he wanted more. He would have caught it without pushing off! That’s what’s so funny. Be mad at your WR, I mean TE, no WR, no TE Saints fans! Hahaha! #49ers Hahaha!

    Calm down little guy.

  48. I think folks are forgetting that the refs have been calling a lot of offensive PI calls this year. I’ve seen much less contact called offenseive PI this year. Graham clearly pushed Cox in the back and extended his arms so it was the right call. Graham didn’t really need to…..6’7″ agaisnt 6’0″.

  49. Guys I’m neither Saints nor 9er fan. I’m a Browns fan. I watched the game though and while the guy may have flopped it still was a push off. If you ask me both of your fan groups are whining. The saint fans whine about today while 9er fans whine about the past. The saints made so many mistakes that they shouldn’t have. Then they wouldn’t need to throw a Hail Mary!

    WWGD?

    what would Gronk do

    1. Catch the ball.
    2. Not Cry like a Baby
    3. Be the hero.
    4. Not look like an alien doing it.

I’m a die hard Saints and Jimmy fan, but this^ was hilarious.

  51. Hey @Saints12013. You know, one of the reasons that the NFC West had such a bad reputation all of those years is because of the Saints and Falcons being in the division. You do realize that don’t you? Since the alignment that actually put the the Saints in the south, the NFC south has gone 17-16 in the playoffs and the West has gone 19-16. So, I’m not sure where the competitive edge is.

  52. It seems like the refs are deciding a lot of games this year. Some ref squads call every little touch by defensive backs and other squads let them get away with murder. It’s screwing up the games.

  53. It’s just one of those years. Saints can’t catch a break and get called for all the ticky tack ones. In this game you need to have some luck. And we couldn’t buy some if it was free.

  54. Just to show how bad it was today….. It took the refs 5 minutes to figure out who jumped offsides when 3 49ers clearly jumped offsides and encroached. Like what the hell you need to have a long discussion for when it was so blatantly obvious who jumped.

  55. my big peeve is when was the last time we saw an offensive PI of ANY kind on a hail mary?

I cant for the life of me think of any PI Pass on any hail mary in a good long time.

  56. After watching the Giants receivers get mugged all game in Seattle without a call I watch this and scratch my head…

I’m not sure what the NFL is trying to do…..

  57. what jimmy doesn’t know is that if you gronk like gronk gronks, then the gronking will will bring the correct result

they should just rename the TE position to gronk

  58. It doesn’t matter much to the Saints. They’ll still make the playoffs with a home game and San Fran won’t And will need s new coach after the season. So it’s not the end of the world.

  59. What about the B.S pass interference call on Boldin on a 20 yrd reception that wasnt even close to what Graham did and Boldin got flagged the flag on Graham was a good call

  60. Oh San Francisco genius……can you please learn the correct way to use “their…”?

Whodat??? We dat! Saints and there division suck

  61. only thing better would have been a complete phantom OPI call, so all you Aints fans’ heads would explode.

You might be leading your suck division but you won’t get a 1st-round bye and will be bounced by a wildcard team.

You got your 1 Super Bowl…now stock up on some paper bags

  62. Golden Tate said he “didn’t know what you’re talking about” when asked if he pushed off after de-cleating the Packers defender in the ultimate * game.

    ==================================
So its ok to get away with a blown call in the first quarter but not the last play? Aren’t all plays important for “the game”?

  64. Aints fans and shehawk fans mad because we won.Shehawk fans mad because we are right behind them in the division waiting for them to slip up which I know they will .We are finally getting healthy and it scares them shehawk fans.5 and 4 In the division and all that without 4 OF OUR STAR defensive players that are soon coming back it’s about to get real for you shehawk fans!NIINER4LIFE

  65. I agree it wasn’t a Push off. It was a SHOVE the defender to the ground. I know there’s a difference in there somewhere. But the play drew enough laundry to fill a washing machine.
