Jim Caldwell: No playoff fever in Detroit

The Lions improved to 7-2 on Sunday by beating the Dolphins behind their consistently strong defense and a timely offense that got Calvin Johnson back into the mix.

That’s their best start since 1993 and it has some people starting to weigh the Lions’ chances of making a run in the playoffs, but Lions coach Jim Caldwell isn’t one of them. Caldwell said Monday that no one has a case of playoff fever in the organization with so much football left to play.

“We don’t have it. We’re wearing the white mask around here, so we don’t have to worry about it,” Caldwell said, via ESPN.com. “It’s like I said every week, we don’t give out any awards or anything after nine games of the season. We haven’t done anything yet. We’ve been playing well. We’ve been playing tough and that kind of stuff, but it’s a long season. It’s a journey and we’re still on that journey.”

With seven weeks to go, they’re still relatively early on that journey as they learned when they lost six of seven games after starting the 2013 season with a 6-3 record. If the Lions should beat the Cardinals and Patriots in the next two weeks, however, Caldwell might need a hazmat suit to keep the playoff fever at bay.

  1. Sounds like coach speak.

That’s the difference between Arians and most other coaches: he’s not coaching for his next job so he just puts it out there.

Not saying it’s good or bad, but he doesn’t feel the need to operate under the same constraints as the younger guys.

  2. That’s the right attitude, the way the Packers are playing right behind them. The Lions know they’re not blowing anyone away. They’re winning, but not destroying opponents like GB. I hope they focus and finish.

But the Lions did destroy GB.

  4. They were lucky to scrape home in the final 30 seconds against Miami. Everyone will say it was never in doubt but if Miami gets a 1st down, they win the game.

    =======================
Guess that’s why they play the game huh? Miami didn’t get a 1st and they lost.

  6. Best defense in the league led by a stalwart at all levels in Suh, Levy, and Digs. The defense alone should get them to the dance. Then its time for playoff Megatron to help them make noise.

With the pieces in doubt for the future, this could be their one year window..

  7. Caldwell has this team focused and they play for him. They have responded to his leadership and are playing for each other as well as the coaching staff. That’s rare in the NFL so once it happens just keep riding the wave and get everything out of it you can.

I agree with one of the above posters that this team should be a lot better come playoffs—once the offense hits stride look out.

  8. Maybe they should win in December and finish the season before we pick them to win anything.

  9. Good attitude for them to have; one game at a time and worry about the playoffs if and when they get there. But I think this team goes as far as Megatron takes them. They can beat teams like Atlanta without him, but they can’t afford to lose him and expect to beat the better teams in the league. He makes that offense, and really the whole team, special

  10. Here’s the thing that’s different amongst lion’s fans this year…….NFL nation can make its jokes about Detroit, the total implosion last year, the futility of the franchise since 1958. None of that matters this year. The Lions are quite legitimately a very good team. Nobody saw this defense coming, but they are 100% legit. It is no longer week 3 or 4. That front brings it like no other team in the league. Credit goes to Ndamukong Suh, the media’s favorite villain, for that. Like another poster mentioned. ….if this offense does what everyone knows it can, they can and will go to the SuperBowl.

    What pieces are in doubt?
Pretty much the whole offense is locked up for the next 3-5 years.

Outside of Suh,Fairley and Mathis on defense, everyone else such as Quinn, Slay, Ansah and the others are locked up for at least 3 more years. Levy has I believe 1 year left on his current deal after this year.

If they are able to resign Suh the biggest question becomes Teryl Austin at Defensive Coordinator.

  12. Nothing special about the yawning Lions.
Sans Megatron and ‘Stifford’ is just lost out there.
I have ALL the faith in the world that these kittens will continue to represent the bankrupt city of Detroit in all its non post-season glory.

  13. Response to the truth campaign……the packers ? Post their game stats vs detroit in 1st match up this season…packers are very fortunate they been playing bottom tier defenses last few weeks…..smh some fools dont see the obvious !

  14. 1st meeting this season…greenbay 238 yards total offense…1 td ! Final score detroit 19 greenbay 7…true lions arent blowing up the score board but they score enough to win….now explain that greenbay 45 pts per game you were bragging about…what happen in that game ? Each week the pronosticators dwell on the hot offense detroit will face n how their defense will be ripped to shreds….each week detroit shuts them down….detroit is giving up a avg. Of 15 pts per game…packers couldnt get 1/2 of that 1st meeting…

  15. As a Lions fan I am always prepared for them to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and find a way to lose a game but I am starting to believe in this team.

Despite showing as much emotion as a pet rock Caldwell brings a sense of discipline and poise that this team was seriously lacking under Schwartz.

Teryl Austin has done an amazing job taking this defense to the next level especially in spite of multiple key player injuries.

Stafford has been on a fantastic comeback streak lately and we are starting to see the guy that was on the field in 2011 that played with confidence and got the job done when it counted, not the one that blew it in the 4th quarter like last season.

Key offensive players are finally getting healthy again when they need them. The only knock I see against them is getting the Offense back to the level of production it used to have. If they can finally click under Lombardi this will be a very hard team to beat.

These next two games will tell us a lot about what kind of team this is. Ultimately the road to legitimacy for Detroit travels through Green Bay on 12/28 too. I will drink the kool-aid and eat the corn bread til I am sick if they make a statement at Lambeau.

  16. And, I do think we will now defeat the Stanton-led Cardinals without a problem. The only 2 games left I see as possible (trying to avoid saying probable) to lose are the NE and GB at home games. GB could lose 4 of its remaining games.

  17. Not to look ahead ….we still need to play the cardinals…however new england hasnt seen anything close to detroits defense….no pressure on brady yet this season….wait till suh n company take aim at him….those sit in the pocket passes will be run for your life and throw it anywhere passes…..i see detroit rolling on !

  18. Prognosticators say detroit has 3 tough games left….arizzona – new england – green bay. Detroit will take the leagues most distructive defense into those game….detroit offense will face the leagues middle of the pact defenses….arizona rated 15th new england rated 16th green bay rated 23rd….so who actually believes those 3 teams will win…my question would be how ?

  19. They’ve won 1 playoff game in the last 57 years. But hey, they make the Cubs look like the Yankees.

  20. Milkcan….no they didint win 1 ….they werent playing…none were born ! If you want to say 57 years ago these players n these coaches that represent detroit today started a 57 year drought then maybe we all should play the what happen in our familys over the last 6 decades …we can blame our children for it now…the stuidity of saying this years team is represenative of 6 decades of losing is rediculous…if detroit had a decent kicker to start the season we would be looking at a 9-0 team….both games lost there were enough missed field goals to have won both..each season n each team is unique….we are looking at a detroit team that has destroyed each pundit proclaimed hottest offense weekly…detroit has played to this level with several missing defensive and offensive starters over several weeks. But each sunday we see these supposed mega offensive machinez n fearsome defenses they face crumble….time to realize…ask the dolphins…packers…falcons and the saints if they want to play the lions every week….

  21. The Lions have ten wins built into the schedule: home against Minnesota, Chicago, and Tampa. On the road against Chicago in Week 16 is probably another win. The problem is that the other three games are road games against Arizona, New England, and Green Bay. I wouldn’t be astonished to see wins in any of those (particularly this week with Arizona -2), but the home teams will be favored in each game.

10-6 might be enough to capture the last Wild Card spot; 11-5 will certainly do it. Unfortunately, the Packers are playing at a high level right now and will likely get to at least 11 wins, too, even if they lose to Philly this weekend.

So it looks like the Lions may be heading down to play a road wild card game against the Saints. They may even be favored in that one, but the odds of getting a home playoff game this time around look rough.

  22. Look who greenbay beat….chicago twice…minnesota…the inflated scores of those games are not indicative of a powerhouse team…its a sign if laying it on against poor opponets…look at the packers losses for the true story of their caliber of team and their 23rd ranked defense…..detriot very well may run the season out…sundays cardinal game will give a truer picture….cardinals defense is ranked 15th and everybody else they will face is below that with the patriots at 16th…as detroits tight ends return which they expect 2 back sunday watch for scoring to increase …i can tell you this the cardinals are burning the midnight oil trying to figure out how to stop the lions defensive rush….stanton is not a run around passer…he prefers the pocket and detroit knows him n his tendencys better then his cardinal coaches….that pocket will be rare sunday…also ill add mr. Brady n company are not salivating in anticeapation of the following sunday…..lions will win division out right n i expect a bye week 1 of playoffs

  23. The last time the Lions won a game in Arizona was 1993….that’s a fact, regardless of who the Cards had at QB. And they’ve had some bad ones!

  24. Response to ugli….it dont matter when they won there last….there are no points awarded for previous years wins…you sound like the game will start with the cardinals up 14 – 0 because of the past years…they have no bearing on this game….what we will see is the cardinal offensive line employing the look out blocking system when suh n company attacks…they will in unison as the ball is snapped yell LOOK OUT to stanton
