Aldon Smith: I did everything required by the league

The NFL opted not to shorten 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith’s nine-game suspension for violations of the league’s substance-abust and personal conduct policies, but Smith says it wasn’t because of a failure to comply with their guidelines to return to the team.

A report from Ed Werder of ESPN over the weekend claimed Smith didn’t fulfill counseling requirements mandated by the league was refuted by Smith’s agent and the NFLPA and Smith said Tuesday that he did “everything that was necessary” to gain early reinstatement. He didn’t get it and doesn’t know why, but says that it’s a moot point now that his suspension has come to an end.

“Not really, nothing that was clarified. But that’s not important any more. I’m happy I’m back and I’m ready to go,” Smith said, via CSNBayArea.com.

Smith was allowed to attend meetings at the team’s headquarters during his suspension, but he wasn’t permitted to practice. He filled his time by fulfilling community service obligations through work with children and shied away from making any big pronouncements about being a changed man, opting instead to say that time will prove whether he can make the needed changes in his life.

“I’d say, honestly, time will show,” Smith said. “I’m not going to sit here and give you some, whatever, crazy answer. Time will show, you know.”

Smith is eligible to play this week and the 49ers said last week his work in practice will determine how much he plays against the Giants.

  1. To be honest, the fact that he isn’t giving the normal load of garbage like “I’ve learned my lesson” and “I’m a changed man” makes me think maybe he realizes now that he can’t keep doing what he’s been doing. I’m not a big fan of his stupidity but here’s hoping the kid can get his head out of his posterior and realize that being on the field is primary and everything else doesn’t matter. He’s probably already cost himself a lot of money but if he can get his act together, he’ll still get it.

  2. I hate him when he plays the Seahawks, but what an athlete. Hope he really has made steps in his personal life to stay out of trouble off the field, he’s fun to watch when he’s not playing my team.

It’s nice to see a player not making ridiculous declarations about how much they’ve learned/changed and how they’ll never, ever screw up again. He actually sounds like he understands and accepts that this will be something he has to continue to work at if he truly wants to make a change in his lifestyle.

Good on ya, Aldon, and good luck. Except for weeks you play the Seahawks.

  3. Niners fans are delusional if they think this guy is going to stay out of trouble, not become a locker room distraction, and working hard every play all while making nothing this year. He is going to be bitter about his contract and it’s going to affect him mentally as well as the locker room chemistry. He us going to very quickly become a distraction, you will see.

Other teams fans envy our teams players. Other teams players envy our teams fans. #choochoohawksdynastytrain

“He us going to very quickly become a distraction, you will see.” ___________Not big on the grammar we see.

  5. Sad. Peterson suspended indefinitely for spanking a child, but Smith has felony gun charges, bomb threats, and whatever else going on and his suspension is nine games.

Substitute Seahawk for Niner and Marshawn for Aldon (read -this guy) and you have the perfect paragraph.
You know, glass houses and stones and all that stuff

  7. He worked with children during his suspension? As in a role model or telling them to not be like him?

  8. He did everything required, that’s why he’s not suspended longer. Stop acting like you’re entitled, you’re not.

  9. Its obvious why he didn’t qualify for a reduction. It has to do with being an utter moron. Its the combination of incidents, capped off with the stupidity of getting arrested for joking about bombs at an airport which made a reduction of the suspension not likely.

    Duh.
