Reports out of the Bay Area are that 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis is headed to injured reserve because of the toe injury that’s kept him out of the lineup recently and it doesn’t look like they’ll have immediate help from NaVorro Bowman to help replace him in the lineup.

Ed Werder of ESPN reports that he spoke to Bowman on Sunday and that the linebacker is still experiencing pain in his surgically repaired left knee. Bowman is on the Physically Unable to Perform list after tearing his ACL and MCL in January’s NFC Championship Game.

Bowman told Werder that he’s unsure when he’ll be cleared to practice and coach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday on KNBR that it could still happen this week if doctors like what they see on an MRI.

“Talking to our doctors yesterday, they want to get another MRI, and see exactly where he’s at before that takes place,” Harbaugh said, via CSNBayArea.com. “It’s been 9 ½ months, so as they see fit and what is prudent to get that MRI and make a good check of where he is and then proceed.”

Bowman will have a three-week window to join the active roster once he starts practicing and has to start practicing next week in order to have any chance of playing this season.

  1. don’t rush back…it’s not worth it man…the D has been respectable and will continue to get better…don’t sacrifice your career for 5 games

  2. Theres no rush for Bow to get back. Borland is playing like the best mlb in the league and Wilhoute has been playing well..we good over here.

  3. What is prudent is bringing him back next year instead of ricking a career ending injury by bringing him back too soon.

  4. Im a niners fan and if hes still hurt he may just have to sit out the year playoffs are in reach but we will need help from alot of teams… no need to rush back he doesnt need thr experience

  5. As much as I’d like to see him back in the line up we have to take the long term approach.

I’m in agreement with my fellow Faithful posting above that the defense has been holding it’s own. And with Roman finally giving up his aerial attack pipe dream we shouldn’t have to rely on our D to win games.

So rest up and get better Bowman, I want to see you healthy in the Red & Gold for years to come.

    GO NINERS!!!!!

  6. As a Hawks fan that injury was hard to watch. Hate to see a great player like Bowman go down and stay down for so long. Hopefully he’ll take it slow and get back to 100% before pushing himself.

  7. Man, this team just can’t catch a break with injuries this season! Really frustrating since it’s the most talented team Harbaugh has had since he’s been here. This is the first year I really believed we were going to go all the way.

  8. I’ll join the concensus. I’d rather he sits out if he is still experiencing pain. No need to risk another injury.

  9. The difference between a star and ‘just another guy’ isn’t all that much. He’s finished.

  10. I knew they were wildly optimistic when they predicted he may return in the second half of the season. His injury was gruesome, and it may limit him for the rest of his career.

  11. The Niners can always go to the 4-3. As John Madden said, there isn’t much difference between the 2. Whether you line up in the 4-3 or 3-4 depends on whether your 4th best lineman is better than your 4th best linebacker or not. There was no doubt that with both Willis and Bowman healthy the 4th best linebacker is better than the 4th best lineman. However, if you look at the Niners’ roster, you have to wonder whether Wilhoite is better than either Glenn Dorsey or Quinton Dial. If not, than perhaps Dorsey and Dial can both start in a 4-3 formation.
