Anthony Sherman takes home AFC special teams player of the week

The Chiefs were trailing the Bills 13-10 in the fourth quarter of their game last Sunday when their offense was stopped cold by the Buffalo defense to force a punt.

Bills returner Leodis McKelvin, who set up a Buffalo score with a good return earlier in the game, caught the ball with under 10 minutes to play and the prospects for a Chiefs win getting dimmer. That’s when Anthony Sherman showed up to change things around.

The fullback got down field quickly, knocked the ball out of McKelvin’s grasp and then fell on top of it to give Kansas City the ball back on the Buffalo 26-yard line. Alex Smith ran for an eight-yard touchdown two plays later and the Chiefs were able to make the lead stand up the rest of the way for their sixth win of the season.

Sherman, who had three other special teams tackles, was named the AFC special teams player of the week for his work in helping make that victory happen. He’ll try to make a similar impact against the Seahawks this weekend as the Chiefs try to continue working toward their second-straight playoff spot.

  1. Not only the best fullback in the league, but the only fullback in the league. Should get an additional award for that.

  2. Wow, John Dorsey keeps looking better and better. Guys like Sherman, Ron Parker, Abdullah have made such a huge impact on this team the last 2 years. I’m glad that Reid just coaches and Dorsey is the GM. The next few years this team should be able to make a serious run!!

  3. He should be the face of the franchise. A guy the lay-fan has no idea of, but who contributes in such a way so frequently that he is a difference maker in his own right. It might not be flashy, but I am personally a believer in the way the Dorsey-Reid regime does business.
