Dolphins “demand respect” after Thursday’s win

AP

Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin predicted his team would “beat that ass” when they faced the Dolphins on Thursday night, but defensive lineman Jared Odrick reported that all was well in the wake of Miami’s 22-9 victory.

My ass feels fine,” Odrick said, via ESPN.com. “So, I’m not sure what was supposed to happen. But my ass does feel fine. You never want to give another team bulletin-board material. You really don’t.”

McKelvin left the game with an ankle injury, so he didn’t have much impact on the proceedings outside of the motivating factor that Odrick referred to while apprising us of the state of his hindquarters. Based on the way the Dolphins played, Odrick may not have been the only one feeling that way as the Dolphins didn’t allow a touchdown and ran the ball for more than five yards a pop against a Buffalo team that will leave Florida with their own rears kicked and very little chance of making the playoffs.

The Dolphins, on the other hand, are alive and kicking thanks to how well they held up in a short week.

“It tells us a lot about our character,” Vernon said. “We’re not the type of team that’s just going to lay down. … We demand respect.”

They’ll have 10 days to figure out a way to continue earning it during a Week 12 journey to Denver, where the motivation will come from getting a shot against one of the AFC’s best teams rather than the musings of McKelvin.

  1. It would be funny to see Peyton Manning sarcastically bow down and pay his respects to the Dolphins.

    That would not only be amusing, it would also give the Dolphins the bulletin-board material they crave. It’s win-win.

  2. The Dolphins “demand respect”? That’s hilarious. It’s not like they beat the Patriots last night. They only beat the (lowly) Buffalo Bills.

  3. They’re having a great year, Like Mike Irvin said last night, they’re 2 plays away from being the top seed in the AFC. Proud of how they are playing every week.

  4. When it’s all said and done the Dolphins will probably be 9-7. The question is, will that be good enough to grab a wild card?

  5. The Dolphins are playing good ball, they are stout up front. My question is, will they wear down like last year. I hope they can keep up this level of play.

  6. Dolphins need to tap the brakes a bit. You earn respect by winning playoff games over multiple seasons, not by beating a mediocre Bills team at home by 10 points on a Thursday night.

  7. Respect Is earned not given and anyone can win a few games here and there but if you want respect do it year in and year out Brady, manning and Rodgers, I just named 3 Super Bowl winners, that’s respect

  8. Maybe Miami can squeak in as a wildcard – but lets not pretend that beating the Bills, at home no less, is some sort of statement.

    The Bills have shot their bolt for the season as usual, by week 10, and have discovered that a back up QB is still a back up QB – even if he displaces an awful starter.

  9. Too bad they play in the AFC East with NE, where the Dolphins and everyone else are “also-rans”.

  10. Always have questionable calls in all games but they never seem to go Miami’s way. Last nite they did. What mattered was Miami’s relentless effort and focus to win a game they knew they needed. So many key position players hurt and they stepped up. N.E.’s game against the Colts is now a big game.

  11. They won a home game against the Bills. It would have been a disaster to lose that game and they did what they were supposed to do. They look good at home. No question. They beat the Patriots and dominated the Chargers. The pass rush is working very well. However, they are 3-2 on the road with wins against Oakland, Chicago and Jacksonville. That’s not very impressive. They have to win a quality road game or they aren’t going anywhere.

    @denver @nyj coming up. The jets may be bad, but a road division win is always a tough win. 2-0 in those games and they are back to competing for the division. 0-2 and they might miss the playoffs.

    _________

    Week 1: Dolphins – 33. The Brady Bunch – 20.

  13. Demand respect? The only respect they should get is their ability to get the ref’s to help them out. Without the bogus grounding and pi calls it would have been a good game.
    Is the league trying to help them get a decent record so maybe some fans would start showing up there? Or was it just an incompetent crew?>?

  14. ????

    You have to win SOMETHING…You have to have success in the playoffs. You have to prove that you belong, week to week.

    Then you GET respect!!!! When you ask for it, or in this case demand it…it means you have not earned it.

    Dolphins..will make playoffs…but lets see how they perform in cold & snow in NE. Just like other teams fall to their heat advantages [ and it’s extreme] in Sept…lets see what they’re made of in Dec & Jan before anyone gives them any accolades.

    It’s been 41 years since Dolphins have won anything.

  15. You don’t demand respect….you earn it and I don’t think you’ve done that by beating the Bills for the first time in 2 years.

  16. My Dolphins have some flaws, but the D is lights out. 2 home games in a row they didn’t allow a TD.
    Would like to see more 3 and outs from D that will give the offense more opportunities. Tanny finally needs to hit that long ball. We are still waiting.

  17. No we couldn’t beat the Patriots last night because we played the Bills funnily enough. We beat the Patriots in our season opener when they were available to play. Having said that we are not getting carried away the Patriots is still the big boss we know are limitations but finally we can start to think we might have a decent team, we certainly have a very good defence. When the Jets are still on the schedule potential embarasment is still on the cards as we always seem to spoil each other’s playoff aspirations.

  18. If you need to ask for (demand) respect then you’ve already lost.
    Lets not forget, you beat the Buffalo Bills at your home field in a friendly environment.
    You held serve, keep it in perspective.

  19. The Dolphins, the same team that just a few years ago claimed the AFC East “still goes through Miami”… Understandable, considering they have won the division 2 times in the last 15 years… (eye roll). Anyway, I get alerts on my phone of NFL news and scores and things like that. I literally laughed out loud when I read the alert this morning that “The Dolphins take sole possession of 2nd place in the division”. LMAO, who cares about second place? Could you imagine Dan Marino celebrating sole possession of 2nd place in the division? Hell no!

  20. Looks like the haters can’t even give the Dolphins their dues this morning. No problem. They’ll just keep going out there every week and do their thing and one day people will wake up.

  21. Congrats Miami… you’re the best 2nd tier team in the AFC with that win. You’ve got a solid team, but let’s not kid ourselves and talk about being a contender in the AFC. The playoffs will run thru New England or Denver, check out Miami’s track record in winter away from home. Don’t mean to rain on your parade but let’s not lose sight of the big picture after a win against…. Buffalo.

  23. You don’t demand respect you earn it. Go 3-0 or 2-1 against DEN, BAL, & NE. You will have earned mine. Unless you lose to any of the scrub teams left on your schedule.

  24. sadly, Tanny still can’t hit the deep routes on the run… thus opposing Ds dont even bother with serious help over the top and can bring one or two more in the box…

    so the Phins can’t close in the red zone, Tanny has D linemen in hus face all the time forcing him into 5 yard checkdowns all the time

    Until there is a deep threat team, they will continue to fight for trier lives to lose in the wild card round… and all of that is Tanny’s lack of skill…. he’s gotta be able to throw 3-4 30 plus yard strikes per game and be a 350 yard and 4 TD threat or he needs to go.

    You’re right, they beat the Patsies in week 1.

    ~~~~~
    The Bills are better than you give them credit for. Top 5 defense and some good young players.
    The Dolphins are 2 plays or 30 seconds or 2 uncalled timeouts (depending on how you view the Packers/Lions games) from being 8-2 an leading the division due to a win over the Pats. They had both teams beat and lost on the final drive. They lost those games but I’m just saying the Dolphins are better than many people think.
  27. HC Marrone and OC Hackett need to beat ass out of town. Now the O is dragging the D down the tubes with them.
  28. Nice to see the Phins getting a little confidence for a change. C’mon Miami, let’s see what you got. It would be nice to see the Phins rise up and become relevant again. Made for a nice league.
  29. They are demanding respect after beating the Bills! Really? The dolphins don’t deserve any respect after that win! The bills sucks!!
  30. The Dolphins CLEARLY outclassed the overmatched bills. Looks like 15 years and counting for you…
    Hope you enjoyed our glorious weather…. now go back to the snow!
  31. you know the Phins are still a long shot for the playoffs right???????
    The same would be true for the Bills had they won… The only thing this game did was eliminate the loser basically
  32. RESPECT FOR WHAT!!! Same old conservative NO BALLS Philbin, GO FOR THE TD EVERY TIME WITHIN THE 5!!! As much as I hate to say this that kind of play in Denver will not do SQUAT, infact will probably get them slaughtered!!! This defense can’t even get to the QB just wait to see how Manning kills the Fins next week!!! I love my Fins & I hope I’m wrong but the play was just SUB PAR!!! GO FINS!!!
  33. Bookmark this thread. It’ll be a fun revisit when they get wiped off the map by Denver and Phins Nation once again calls for the heads of the entire coaching staff and front office.
  34. “….We demand respect”
    Reminds me of Fredo in Godfather II
    “It ain’t the way I wanted it! I can handle things! I’m smart! Not like everybody says… like dumb… I’m smart and I want respect!”
    The Dolphins are like Fredo.
  35. The dolphins can win the super bowl for the next 5 years and i still would not respect that joke of a franchise with j-lo and the worst fanbase in the NFL. If any team should move to London its the Fins, the uniforms would fit perfectly.
  36. Bottom feeder who put together a couple good games LOL
    Respect my rear end. Because you beat one of the worst bottom feeding teams of the last dozen years ?
    Please
    LOLERCOASTER
  37. Lol. You beat the Bills…on a short week…at home. Relax. Go beat Tom terrific at his house. Sweep a season series, then come back and we will talk respect.
    —————————–
    LOL. You really believe that? The Dolphins are just OK. They’re playing better than in the past few years, and have some better talent. No way they stack up against New England or Denver. They probably don’t even rate Cincy or Kansas City.
  39. bigbadbills says: Nov 14, 2014 9:14 AM
    Ref’s gave them that game, 9 free points.
    —————
    Okay, you can have those 9 points back.
    Miami 14 – Buffalo 9
  40. Ryann Tannehill and Andrew Luck both drafted the same year with Luck almost being picked #1. Tannehill was an after thought nobody wanted except the Dolphins. It was Tannehill that beat Tom Brady and the Patriots in the opening day game. Andrew Luck now gets his shot at the Patriots this Sunday.
  41. Umm… what Team does not “demand respect”. Personally, I think having the #3 Defense and moving up in the rankings does deserve it whether I was a Dolphins Fan or not, but hey, that’s just me. Keep on hatin’ we love it. The reason why Dolphins stories bring so many comments is jealousy.
    NFL Football is cyclic and the lovable Losers like the Dolphins, Brown, Lions and even Bills are back and the old glory teams (Steelers, Ravens, Giants, Patriots, Texans, Falcons, Bears, etc.)are scared of moving to a decade of losses. You can’t stay on top forever. Suck it up Whiners!
  42. McKelvin lost the game the previous Sunday with an ill-timed turnover, provides the Dolphins with bulletin board material, and then falls on his butt and misses a tackle on a third-and-24 that goes for a first down. What do you think Belichick would do to him?
  43. What do you think Belichick would do to him?
    ——
    Probably thank him for his fumble on opening night a few years ago to help the Patriots comeback to beat the Bills…
  44. Miami has improved but they are not in the same league as the Patriots. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are looking forward to their future visit to Foxboro in the colder conditions. New England was embarassed by the second half in game 1 (Tom had poor protection) but Belichick will demand total and complete humiliation as retribution.
    Should be a great game.
  45. Slow your roll there ‘phins. Teams worthy of respect don’t lose at home by 19 points. Ever.
  46. “Probably thank him for his fumble on opening night a few years ago to help the Patriots comeback to beat the Bills…”
    That was what came to my mind when I saw him do it again on Sunday.
    Alas, he broke his ankle and I hate to talk ill of a guy who was injured.
  47. You morons, talk about taking a quote out of context. He was not asking you buffons to give the Dolphins respect he was talking about other teams respecting their toughness. Which if you ask anyone around the league except Leodis they will tell you they do.
    Yes, we will do the same with your Colts Game and then the calls for Brady on the decline. Like it or not, we never claimed to be Super Bowl or even AFC East champs as you have, but it is funny how we are on our way and the Patriots Fans are out in droves every time we beat a winning team. The Patriots only have 2 wins (Bengals and Broncos) against a winner so far. Not that impressive to me and the rest of the world.
  49. This Demand Respect quote was taken out of context. We know it was in reference to the comments made from the ChucakleHead corner back from the Bills who now had a broken ankel.
    Only a fool has not respect for his rival. You don’t have to like them, but you should respect them. When you don’t bad things can happen.
  50. Thanks Bostonian13, all they gotta do is play physical with Denver… Like when we beat you’re Patriots? And keep in hating to the rest of you haters … We are on the rise !
