Soldier Field clock snafu irks Mike Zimmer

AP

For parts of Sunday’s Vikings-Bears contest in Chicago, the game clock reportedly wasn’t functioning properly, including during Minnesota’s final drive.

Afterwards, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer offered the following four-word performance evaluation of the timing situation.

Clocks here are (expletive),” Zimmer said after Minnesota’s 21-13 loss.

According to Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune, the game clock stopped working with 2:54 left in regulation, just before the Vikings started their final offensive possession. Minnesota would drive to the Chicago 29 before quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was intercepted in the end zone with less than a minute left, ending the Vikings’ hopes.

With the game clock not working, officials kept time on the field.

“It’s hard [for Bridgewater] because no one is able to tell you how much time is left. . . . The whole day the whole thing was going out, so it was just another thing,” Zimmer said, according to Master Tesfatsion of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “Excuse my language.”

According to the Tribune, Soldier Field G.M. Tim LeFevour indicated the cause of the timing issues was unclear.

“We had two technicians here like we do for every game and they couldn’t figure out what was wrong. We believe it could have been a software issue but they’re not sure yet,” LeFevour said, per the Tribune.

The Bears’ next home game is Sunday vs. Tampa Bay.

  1. Never seen a clock force an INT.

You throw the ball after it’s snapped. If the ref’s haven’t stopped play due to delay of game or offensive reasons – it’s a legit play.

Game clock would have nothing to do with that INT to end the Vikings’ chances.

Bridgewater not being very good on the other hand….

  2. The Vikings coaches are just like their fans. Always coming up with excuses for losing. Funny how for over 50 years now it’s everyone else’s fault but the teams’.

    SKOL!

  3. Really zimmer? I have some nice aged cheese to go with your whine. You are as bad as the degenerate purple posters

  4. The Vikings stench has already infected Zimmer. Whining about things that affected both sides. instead of focusing on his own team’s terrible play.

If anything, it seemed like the refs were running the clock a little slower on that last drive to make up for the fact that the Vikings couldn’t see the game clock. And there was plenty of time left when Teddy through that hilariously bad interception.

Stop whining about the clock and coach your team.

  5. It’s clear the league has a grudge against the Minnesota Vikings.

For being the great franchise we are.

    Jealousy is among us.

And is trying to prevent a championship.

    But they will not prosper.

    The dynasty can’t be stopped.

    Live with it.

  6. Amazingly, the clock worked perfectly on every Chicago possession. The clock only malfunctioned during Minnesota possessions. The home team, Chicago, provides the resources (employees) to run the game clock. That pesky clock software. So complicated.

  7. Everyone knows Chicago is the most corrupt city in the US, but even the clock operators are getting in on it now?

  8. It was pathetic. All 2nd half the on screen clock just said 3rd or 4th quarter. Pretty embarrassing for an nfl game to look like peewee football. I can see how this would screw with a rookie coach and qb. Imagine if this had happened to Peyton Manning…

The clock wasn’t working during the Bears last possession, at the very least. A possession where they wound up having to punt about 10 seconds before the two minute warning, giving the Vikings a free timeout when they had used their three. Which was big because Turnover Teddy was sacked on the first play, which would have taken tons of time off the clock had it not been for the two minute warning.

TL;DR – Short version, your purple tears are hilarious. Keep them coming.

  10. Wow, a lot of Bear and Packer fans wanting to jump all over Zimmer. First off, he didn’t say it caused the INT. But, when it isn’t clear how much time is left, you don’t know whether you have to throw to the endzone or could complete a shorter pass and still have time. Zimmer’s point was that the clocks should never be an issue because teams make so gosh darn much money that they should be able to have good clocks, backup clocks, and enough technicians to keep them working. It’s valid, whether you like or hate the Vikings.

  11. I see a lot of people don’t understand the difference between checking down and wide receivers that can’t get open and an offensive line with more holes than Swiss cheese.

  12. Going to a loooonnnngg six weeks for the Vikings. Their “Leader” should be more concerned with the on the field performance of his bad team, not commenting about the clock. Not sure Zimmer’s up for this job – luckily his predecessors have set the bar nice and low (they are who we know they are).

  13. Well tjacks7. All we hear from you Viking fans is how great Patterson is. How you stole the all-world Jennings from the Packers. How awesome your tight end is. Now they can’t get open?

Can’t have it both ways dude.

  14. A bad team beaten by a bad team. Only dif was for one of the. It was suppose to be the year. At least the roper can say he finally won one in Chicago. Clap clap.

  15. some advice for Vikings fans next Sunday, go to the movies , take your kids to the zoo, clean out the garage, change the oil on the car, but please DONT watch the Packers Vikings game please dont do that to yourselves make next Sunday some kind of quality day anything but football.

Vikings are the winningest team in NFC North history. Look it up. Do it. Dooo it.
    ———

The “NFC North” has only been in existence since 2002. And the Vikings certainly are not the “winningest” team in the last 12 years. You know, since the Vikings have only been to the playoffs 4 times in those 12 years, while the Packers have been there….. 9 out of 12 years.

    Derp.

  17. This is only a big deal if it affects one of the NFL’s favorite teams or QB darlings….Rodgers,Manning,Brees,Brady.ect. If it happened to one of these teams there would be a full investigation, rules would be changed.

  21. No one blames the pick on the clock. That’s not what he’s saying. He’s saying Teddy Bridgewater maybe wouldn’t have taken a shot at the endzone from the 30 yard line if he knew how much time was left. It is pretty difficult to run a 2 minute offense with no timeouts without the clock right there, you have to admit that!

    This!

Good advise from someone that knows. You don’t need to be Kreskin to see the beat down that is coming. Sad but, reality for the woeful Vikes.

  24. Things happen during football games. Everyone should have a plan B. The better team adapts and overcomes. Loser whine.

It was a road game. It was too hot in Miami, the air was too thin in Denver, it was cold at Lambeau Field, the headset wasn’t working, it was too dry in Arizona, the grass was too long, they intercepted our signals, it was too windy in Chicago, the vikings chose to look into the sun for home games,
we had to travel, the hotel bed was too soft, we were wearing the wrong cleats, the officials were against us, the visiting locker room was too dim, etc.

The vikings have been whining for over 40 years and it hasn’t improved the team, caused anyone to like them, or made them any money. Whining only brings shame except the vikings are never ashamed of whining.

  25. Look- Say you’re a rookie QB at Soldier Field on a cold day in November. You have less than two minutes to score a TD for a chance to tie, and,… wha-wha-what? There’s NO CLOCK! Now there’s yet one more layer of anxiety to deal with. Imagine the distraction of asking the refs for the time. I get where Zim is coming from, and really appreciate his empathy for the kid. SKOL Zim-SKOL Vikes

  26. TWO TECHNICIANS COULDN’T FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG”

Was that comment referring to the clock or the Bears season?

  27. I was at the game. They were announcing the time on the P.A. system after every play. Find something else to whine about.

  28. Vikes fans are embarrassing themselves whining like Lions fans! Who will you blame when you lose next week? The sound system?
You got your asses handed to ya… deal with it!
    SkoLOL!

  29. They lost To The Bears with their crappy defense and all the whining isn’t going to change that. Two teams put up a half a hundred 2 weeks in a row and all the queens could manage is 1 TD and that was from a gimmick play. Face it once again it is time to “EMBRACE THE SUCK” because they really do. Rodgers is going to have a field day.

  30. Viking Annual SuperBowl next Sunday! The game Viking fans lives revolve around! Win, and they create their own bragging rights. Lose, and they were supposed to lose. And neither result will prevent them from telling the world how great they are. Deja Vu all over again. Just like Groundhog Day.

  31. They should teach media relations to all the head coaches and Rule #1 is that when your team loses, don’t offer up any complaints, criticisms or excuses.

Because when you do, you come off looking petty, cheap, and a sore loser. Zimmer needs to learn that lesson as quickly as possible given the sheer amount of losing his Viking team is going to be doing with Teddy “Checkdown” BustH2O at Qb. By the way, how’s Craig Jennings doing this year?

  32. While I don’t disagree with Zimmer about the clock, the real problems for the Vikings on Sunday were many, and on both sides of the ball.

For starters, not getting off the field on third down tired out the defense, and stymied any chance the offense had for most of the second half. The Vikings didn’t sack Cutler at all, and seldom had any significant pressure on him, which was unusual considering how well their DL has played so far this year. Cutler is mistake-prone, but you have to pressure him to force those mistakes, and the Vikings didn’t do that yesterday.

However, on offense, the Viking OL was pushed around all day. The running game was ineffective, and the pass blocking was just pain lousy. If the Vikings want to compete in the NFC North next year, they need to get that OL fixed this off-season. The defense was on the field for two-thirds of the game yesterday, and the OL didn’t give the rest of the offense a chance to do much.

If the Vikings want to make a decent showing while playing out the season, Norv Turner needs to allow Bridgewater to run the hurry-up offense all day long. That is the only thing that seems to get the offense clicking; it sure isn’t working any other time.

  33. Don’t kid yourself Bears fans. If the clock went out when Cutler was trying to lead a comeback drive you’d be whining too.

Way to get all high and mighty on Monday a week after you were about to tar and feather the entire organization.

What? The refs were managing the clock when they didn’t work. I don’t know how the PA system could announce the time after every play, unless it was a ref. I didn’t hear anything on tv…

    _______

You generally don’t hear the PA announcer on television. They must have been transmitting it to the announcer somehow.

Also, if you have a competent coaching staff, wouldn’t you think they would be keeping time themselves on the sideline? Doing that might not be accurate to the second, but at least they would have had a general idea how much time was left.

You guys are grasping at straws with this lame excuse. You just got beat, plain and simple.
