DeSean Jackson takes a shot at his team, apparently

Getty Images

After Washington used two weeks of preparation to lose by 20 points to the previously one-win Buccaneers, quarterback Robert Griffin III opted not to mimic Peyton Manning’s “I stunk today” approach with the media. Instead, Griffin basically said, “If everyone else stinks, I stink, too.”

Here’s what Griffin actually said: “It takes 11 men.  It doesn’t take one guy.  That’s proven.  The great QBs — the Peytons and Aaron Rodgers.  They don’t play well if their guys don’t play well.  They don’t.  We need everybody. I need every one of those guys in that locker room.  And I know they’re looking at me saying the same thing.”

Teammate DeSean Jackson opted to articulate that sentiment far more concisely.  Jackson posted the following image on his Instagram page:  “You can’t do epic sh-t with basic people.”  He linked to the message via Twitter, saying “this how I’m feeling today.”

It’s a bit surprising that it has taken this long for Jackson to sound off.  But if the quarterback is going to indirectly call out everyone around him and not publicly take sole blame for the struggles of the team, the receiver who only a week ago was being praised for supporting the quarterback has a license to throw shade indiscriminately.

  1. He’s right. I don’t care what anyone says or feels about him, dude deserves to play with an elite quarterback. Can you imagine him on the Colts, Pack, Steelers, Chargers, Pats, Broncos…..

  2. Name one person that didn’t see this coming. Signing this guy on that team with that QB was a disaster waiting to happen. Hilarious!

  3. He is right!! The man speaks the truth. Since 2013, the Redskins are in the same company of the Bucs and the Raiders. They are 6 and 20. BURN DOWN THE KINGDOM!!!

  4. Stand up Dan! In 20 some years of ownership, you have single handily ruined the spirit of the holidays ever single year for Skins fans.

Ah the November melt down once again is upon us. But good news, in March, we’ll whip out the checkbook and beat those pesky Bucs for the offseason championship!

  5. The fact that he only said that is actually pretty amazing.

I mean 2 weeks ago RG3 was bragging about how he is the only QB on the team that can overthrow DJax. Then he has gone and proven it in both games he has been in. In yesterday’s game he gave up 14 points doing that.

Any deep threat is going to be torqued that they are expending that much effort to get free and open to have their QB blowing it that badly.

RG3 needs to realize that as a QB, it doesn’t matter how bad the rest of the team is – he is to blame and needs to take responsibility.

I do think it interesting though that in the games where Cousins and McCoy played the Skins have scored more than 7 each time and with RG3 they have been held to 7 or less 2 out of 3 games.

The truth is the rest of the team may need work, but it begins and ends with the QB position, especially on this team.

  6. Figured it would take until year 2 for Desean to begin his melt down. I should have taken the under on that. Bet he misses Philly now… maybe he should have grown up instead of acted like a child and skip the year end exit interview

  7. A case study in why you need character guys on your team. These guys could be undefeated and still be one bad game away from a meltdown. But when they’re bad they eat each other alive. There’s no accountability, no true sense of team or wanting to perform well for your teammates. All anybody cares about is themselves.

  8. Man it’s a stiff competition in the NFL this year for Biggest Flaming Trainwreck, but the Washington Footballers are certainly making a run for the title.

  9. Our O-Line takes most of the blame in this game.

When all you have time to do is check down during your entire two minute offense it’s easy to see the problem. There is not one top 5 QB that you can put behind our toilet paper O-line and expect to have that much of a better outcome during the season.
Of course everyone points at the QB but that’s not our biggest concern.

I watched the Browns game yesterday and saw Hoyer fall down and was still able to get up stand in the pockets for four more seconds before he completed a pass.

Like I said 4 weeks ago, upcoming draft:

    Safety
    O-line
    D-Line

  10. Why not any stories about Alfred Morris apparently bashing the fans?

“Who knows what they were booing for, honestly,” Redskins running back Alfred Morris said. “Garbage in, garbage out. We don’t pay attention to it. We come out here to play whether there’s no one in the stands or thousands in the stands.”

  11. A match made in heaven, two guys with big mouths.Snyder s calling the shots and this is what you get.Snyder and rg3 have a bromance going and the coach wont put the best guy in which is colt mccoy.

  12. I love the Redskins. They’re hilarious. Seriously, great entertainment value. Crappy team, but great entertainment value.

  13. RG3 just cant stop himself. starts every conference strong, takes the blame on himself and says he has to do better…then he starts blaming everyone and making excuses. he does it every single time.

their PR guy needs to lurk in the shadows. Once RG3 does his initial statements, which are good, guy needs to shoot him in the neck with a blowdart before he totally unravels.

If the guy isn’t smart enough to figure out a press conference and makes the same mistakes every time, he is never gonna learn to read a defense and be a NFL QB.

Going down as one of the biggest busts in NFL history. say what you want about Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell, yes they were HUGE busts….BUT…their teams used their original draft pick on them…they didn’t trade away three #1s and a few #2s to get him.

  14. Firesnyder-

You can take that a step further and say that minus a few playoff runs here and there, The Redskins have stunk for 20+ years now. Even the time between Gibbs 1.0 and Snyder taking over the team was a mess. The kingdom was burned down long ago, now we just see a group of guys rolling in the ashes.

Also, kudos to Jackson for sharing what every single fan of this team feels.

  15. Over the next 6 weeks, we will see the emergence of RG3 as the star we thought he was, or he’ll wreak havoc and make a mess….But at least the question will be answered, and we’ll know the direction of the franchise. We weren’t going to the playoffs this year anyhow, so let’s see the team cleanse itself of any & all problems this year, and next season they can begin to turn the corner….

I don’t think Jackson is the problem here, at this point, and I don’t think anyone else does either.

  16. Why do you think Jackson is no longer a Philadelphia Eagle? He’s not a team player. Why do you think a receiver who show’s moments of greatness, is let go with little or no notice? Don’t look for healing, from,” Desean Jackson.” He’ll do more damage then good!!!

  17. The idea that you can have success by signing a WR for a fortune is once again proven wrong. Try having a better OL and DL, it doesn’t look as spectaacular in July but it is much more efficient.

  18. Unfortunately, players can’t call out the owner. In this case, that is where the issue lies. Snyder is by far IMO, the worst owner in professional sports. Bruce Allen is not a competent GM (his record supports that) and is yet another yes man. Solid organizations allow football minds to make football decisions. Snyder still is running a fantasy team in Ashburn and we all, for the past 20 years, have seen the results.

  19. I think RgIII has some kind of anti-social personality disorder. The world he lives in doesn’t really have anyone else in it.

I don’t mean this as an insult. I’m just looking for an explanation as to all the ridiculous stuff that keeps coming out of his mouth. He’s his own worst enemy right now.

  20. I don’t think RG should publicly take solo credit for Washington not being a good team until he learns to tackle better on defense. That “team” has many problems.

  21. danind – You are wrong, the Chargers did trade to get Ryan Leaf. They gave Arizona their 1998 1st round pick, their 1998 second round pick, 1999 1st Round Pick, Eric Metcalfe and LB Patrick Sapp.

RGME is a bust and was destined to be one. The franchise is a disgrace.

  22. Somehow RGIII has sunk that ship even further than before he got there. He seems like a nice humble guy but he just comes off as a me first guy in his interviews.

  23. The Raiders and the Jags are probably the worst teams in the NFL right now. Fortunately or unfortunately the Washington Redskins will overtake them shortly and they are in bad shape as far as the cap goes. Going to be a long decade.

  24. Quickest way to try and get to a winning organization and away from the awful mess Snyder has created with the Landover team…just come out publically against the team name. The organization really needs some more turmoil to start now from the players vs ownership.

You act like this is uncommon among pro athletes. There are many athletes who probably feel the same way except they don’t get a microphone shoved in their face every week. Most athletes are smart enough not to voice that opinion to the media.

It wasn’t until Peyton Manning arrived in Denver that he actually admitted to the media that he might not be perfect. He threw his teammates under the bus for a decade but his team was winning and he could do no wrong in the media.

Let’s face it, the stars have never been held accountable in their careers going back to high school. I’m sure if Griffin had a problem with a player, it was automatically the other players fault. If he had a bad game in college, i’m sure it was because his teammates didn’t do enough. Schools and colleges do not really care about the athlete. Win and you are treated as a god.

I do not envy the sports agent who has to convince his client to appear humble.

  26. Meanwhile Griffen is thinking…’can’t be talking about me. RGIII is a brand not a player’

  27. Desean should be calling out his team. He’s the only player on the offensive side that shows up week in and week out. He’s the only one that cares. He’s fiery and passionate and I love it. Everyone on the team needs his attitude right now. He won’t accept the bs effort that the Skins brought yesterday.

RG3 better come back to reality soon because he was the worst player on the field yesterday.

  28. The fans of this team deserve better. They can help themselves though. They need to stop going to the games and make Dan Snyder feel the burn. It’s hard to get motivated to put out a good product if you are still making dough hand over fist with a crummy product.

  29. Ian Rappaport just reported that Seattle has a deal to bring Jackson to Seattle for Lynch…But we know Ian has been known to fib…and also poke little children in the eye through a fence…

  30. …maybe the lesser Gruden-if he wants to add to the QB carousel- should consider starting DeSean at QB…I think that might put some levity into a disaster of season…

  31. Let this be a lesson for fans in the future. Teams don’t release young Pro Bowlers for no reason. Buyer beware. When a team signs one, they will more than likely regret it.

Except when it happens to your team. Then the rest of us are just haters.

  32. Evidently no one noticed the poor example of a defense on the field, now i’m not saying the offense or special teams gets a pass but let’s be real…who designs a defensive scheme where you blitz the safety and have a LB covering a WR downfield??? Haslett has got to go he’s produced the same defensive confusion for 5-6 years in Washington. Next special teams they can’t get good field position for the offense as they are always starting at or inside the 20 yd line, and then a kicker who can’t kick it into the endzone and then misses 2 field goal wide right. Now the offense, even with Trent Williams in the game they are a sorry O-line, and if it’s anyone on the team who doesn’t think RGIII should be QB it might be those bums, I mean he gets bum rushed and sacked and these guys are still standing and lined up next to each as if they had no clue that the rush was coming. Now granted RGIII had no protection but he should realize this and beware of what’s going on and get the ball out quicker, there were plays he chose to move out of the pocket where he had open receivers for quick strike passes, he needs to be able to see this and react accordingly.

  33. It’s Snyder’s fault. When are you going to learn do not give big pay days to guys like Haynseworth , Jackson and wait till RG3 gets Flacco money. Redskins will be in last place for the next 10 years.

  34. Its funny but Djax never lashed out vs Vick. Respect is earned. Vick never throws a teammate under the bus. That’s why he is respected in 32 locker rooms.

  35. A comedic tragedy… I’d the skins were on Broadway it be the longest running show of all time..

  36. “License to throw shade”?
Seriously? You really need to stop watching Real Housewives of Atlanta.

  37. Let’s face it, the only shocker here is that it took Desean so long to start complaining and behaving like a Diva.

  38. I’m torn. Do I want a QB that takes the blame for losses even when it is clear it isn’t the case OR do I want a QB that answers questions insightfully with honesty letting the chips fall where they may.

I guess if those are the only two choices I would take the first but it can be boring and borderline untruthful to shoulder blame that isn’t yours.

    ——————————————————–

He deserves SQUAT!!! A me first WR coupled with a me first QB. Sounds appropriate to everybody else.

  40. Larry Fitzgerald has had twice as good a career as Desean Jackson and never once publicly criticized his team, even when they were terrible and had terrible quarterbacks. DJ could learn a thing or two from Larry.

  41. Bostonian13 there’s a reason he will never be on a good team with an elite QB, those teams get rid of locker room cancers, they don’t bring them in. Well sometimes The Hoodie does, but even Bill knows there’s no redemption in Jackson. You have to be a team player to last with an elite QB, or you won’t get the ball.

  42. RGIII was saying that everyone on the team needs to play better including himself. That’s how I interpreted it.

But, damn, the Redskins should’ve moved hell and earth to get Luck. The thing is i don’t think the Colts would’ve given up anything for Luck.

  43. does anyone notice this team has only gotten worse since the whole “Redskins” name became a “bad” word. Maybe the American Indians have put a ju ju hex on the team. As an Eagles fan I am very ok with it!!

  44. lfred Morris sucks without Shanahan and RG3 sucks with or without. Desean has at least proven he can ply well for more than one year in the league.

Washington would rather sell RG# jerseys to the basics than stsrt Colt and at least have a chance to win games. I mean, two weeks rest and lose to Tampa?Hell to the skins.

The announcers yesterday kept saying RG has not had time to learn the offense.. Has Colt somehow had more time than him?

  45. [Peyton Manning] threw his teammates under the bus for a decade but his team was winning and he could do no wrong in the media.

This is so true, but no one remembers it. Manning has so much charisma, he’s teflon, no doubt. People can’t even remember his obvious big-game struggles. They like him so much they’re desperate to anoint him GOAT, but there’s no way such a sucky big-game QB can be that. Doesn’t stop them though.

  46. As a ‘Skins fan (man I hate to admit that)…I have zero problem with what DeSean said. In fact…I LOVE it. I wish we had a ton of guys with that attitude. The problem is we don’t. We have a ton of guys collecting a paycheck with no heart. They know they suck and they have just accepted it.

This team is a disaster, will always be a disaster, the only light at the end of the tunnel is the next train coming to run over us loyal fans.

  47. Brady or Manning admit when they stink. Brady has had some pretty awful people around him at time, but he doesn’t blame his team, he carries his team. RGIII couldn’t carry an empty bag. His pride is his downfall.

  48. Desean is right. However you can’t point the finger at RG# and say he didn’t take responsibility.

“I didn’t see the field right.” “I didn’t make the right reads.” “I understand that how I play the position is frustarting for the coach right now.” These are all quotes from the last two days. He has taken credibility. He also is saying it is the entire team, which it is.

  49. Definition of winner vs. loser:

Winner: Seek good people. Find good people. Make it work with good people.

Loser: Take good people for granted. Screw it up with good people. Blame others when you’re with bad people.

    Chip Kelly = Not Basic.

  50. RGIII has it all wrong. Elite QBs make everyone around them better. If he does not understand that he is not and cannot be a leader in the locker room or on the field. It’s a shame but his potential will never be realized.

  51. It’s funny the great QBs like Peyton, Brady, Brees all admit when they play bad but how come QBs like RG3, McNabb even JaMarcus make excuse and excuse.

  52. Man. If only DeSean was able to play on a team with a legitimate offense and a head coach who designs plays to his strengths. He might go crazy and put up career numbers.

    Oh wait……

  53. It took 5 weeks as a starter for everyone to decide that Cousins was not an NFL starter. 2014 QB Rating = 86.4. And apparently everyone already knows Colt McCoy isn’t an NFL starter. 2014 QB Rating = 107.0.

How many more weeks will it take for everyone to decide that RG3 is not an NFL starter? 2014 QB Rating = 88.0, no wins as starter.

  54. Desean is having a great, pro bowl season, with Colt McCoy and Cousins throwing a majority of the season thus far, nobody can talk crap about Desean. Now where Pierre Garcon has went is a better question, he has been horrible this year. But you can’t blame yesterdays lose on Griffin, Trent went down in the 1st quarter and the oline played horrible and gave Griffin nothing to work with. One pick wasn’t even his fault, it was all on Niles Paul who the ball hit square in his hands and tipped it up for the pick. And the other was batted up at the line. Griffin didn’t play good but he wasn’t the only or the main one to blame. What about Kia Forbath missing 2 FGs. What about the defense allowing Evans to get wide open all day. And yet, Griffin took the blame on things that were clearly not on him. It’s the first year in a new offense, give Griffin a break and allow him to learn. Not to mention the numerous injuries to key players all year.

  55. Sorry but I think everyone that thinks DeJax is being a cancer. I think is missing the point on this one. He goes out and shows support of a guy last week, then, that guy RGweak goes out and basically blames everyone else but himself essentially. Making DeJax look kind of silly for even saying anything at all, I’d call my qb basic too, especially when we lose every game you play.

  56. I’m not a washington fan, but on the outside looking in they needed to give K. Cousin at least 2 years to progress. When you start 3 QB’s it dosen’t work for any of them.

  57. Ladies and Gentlemen…DeSean Jackson.
It took longer than many of us expected but there he goes, exhibiting why Chip Kelly did not want him and neither did any of the elite teams…

    _______________

I agree with much of this. However, RGIII has been rather extreme. Even Peyton’s schtick pales in comparison to the stuff RGIII has done. In particular I’m referring to him demanding to play while injured and therefore subjecting himself to another ACL tear and then rushing back from injury when he clearly was not physically able to play well. The vast majority of professional athletes get that it is better to speak in cliches than to run your mouth and sound arrogant and delusional. RGIII really is in the minority on this point.

  59. When did PFT becone the daily mail?

How does one get to DJax twitter relating to hating rgiii?

Also, how deos one make rgiii s comments and say he threw the team under the bus?

Extrapolation is the new journalism, huh?

  60. You know too many of today’s players are soft whiny crybaby divas.

Press conferences, twitter, instagram, whatever it is all about ME ME ME. If only I played on this great team or that great QB I’d show you how great I am. Just ask me I’ll tell you.

You know what? Great players make the other people around them better, they don’t complain about how they need this guy or that system to win.

They win or they blame themselves and WORK harder.

Yet instead of looking for character guys who are willing to put in the hard work necessary to be prepared for the chance to win, teams go out and get ‘the mouth that roared’.

For supposedly smart businessmen a lot of them look pretty stupid every year.

    Ain’t ego a marvelous thing?

  61. About the only thing we haven’t seen from the REDSKINS this year so far is a locker room fight over the mirrow between RGME, MEsean and MEangelo. That would make the season complete!

  62. Dan Snyder has completely destroyed the Washington Redskins. The roster is so messed up and salary cap so out of wack that any coach/gm can not get it under control given a “4 year” plan and would likely need a “10 year” plan. Honistly what needs to happen is all players should be wavied, all staff fired, building repainted and start over again. Snyder and Cerrato’s decade of damage could not be overcome by Shanahan due to a 38 million dollar cap penalty and Gruden is no more qualified to be a head coach than Zorn was. At this point the only players we should keep is Kerrigan, Murphy, Amerson, Robinson and Williams on offense release everyone else and draft, draft and draft new young talent, sure will we lose big at first 1-15 ect. But what’s the difference? The Redskins have a huge payroll and for what 3-12???

They don’t sell as many jerseys.

  64. Lmao off at fellow eagles fan who feel the need to come on here and justify why desean is no longer eagle shows how much you miss him. I don’t see anything wrong with what Desean said at all. But lets keep up the phony outrage and pretend he’s a loud mouth considering he rarely gives the media a soundbite. The true problem is RG3 never taking blame for anything. To all my eagles fan i guess the eagles OFFENSE doesn’t miss Desean look at the stats , ask shady if he doesn’t 4 of 5 lineman are back and he still struggling. Eagles fans hate to admit that this runt gave the offense a spark and we would be better with him. Maclin is not feared and is not being doubled that leaves an extra safety in the box.

  65. Jackson had a chance to go to any team that wanted him. He chose the Skins, so you get what you signed up for! SO, shut the hell up. Did you really think you were going to pay the Eagles back by going to Washington?

  66. Anndd the redskins debacle begins! D jax is a diva and RgKnee is a bust fair to say….just sit back with ur popcorn and beer and watch this franchise blow up!

  67. mrlaloosh says:

I’m sure Chip Kelly is glad he got rid of DJack. Dodged that bullet.

    ———————————————-

Yes, Good Ole boy Riley has taken up the slack…ha ha

  68. But RGKnee wins in the all-important category of “Subway commercials.”

How many Subway commercials does DJax have? Hmmmmmm?

  69. This is only the beginning for DeSean. He’s been on his good behavior on his new team so far, but that’s all about to change. He’s going to start lobbying to be traded to a better team in the offseason…..or else be released so he can make his own deal.

  70. I can say without question I’m very grateful neither of these selfish clowns are on my team. Both are locker room cancer and neither are nearly as good as they think they are. RGIII is completely awful and Jackson is a one dimensional player. He’s also never won squat so I have no idea what “epic” things he thinks he’s ever done.

  71. Eagles fans, what exactly did you tell us? You all said he isn’t a #1 WR. He is. Oh, and exactly what will the Eagles be doing in February? They will be home with a later pick in the 1st round. No rings say it all. As for us and all this drama, it is what it is. Got our money back and our draft picks back. Jolla!

  72. Rams are loving the success of the Washington team.

MeSean Jackson is showing his true colors as is RGME.

    Keeping it classy DC!

    Miss us yet MeSean? -Chip

The dumpster fire has ignited, and Shanahan is loving the circus that is in DC that he is no longer part of.

He should be thanking RGME for giving him another shot in the NFL coaching ranks again. Give RGME enough rope and he will hang himself, unless Dan steps in and decides to hang Gruden.

Either Way keep up the good work DC!

    – NFC East Fans
