NFC playoff picture: Cardinals stand atop the conference

AP

There’s much left to be decided in the NFC playoff race, but this much is clear: The Cardinals are well ahead of the pack.

After beating Detroit on Sunday, Arizona now owns a two-game lead over the rest of the NFC. The Cardinals, who are undefeated in conference play, also own the tiebreaker advantage over every other NFC team. All the Cardinals have to do is win at least four of their last six games, and the road to the Super Bowl will go through Arizona.

Here’s where the NFC playoff race stands, with six weeks to go:

THE PLAYOFF TREE
1. Arizona Cardinals (9-1) NFC West leader. The Cardinals’ schedule isn’t easy going forward: They still have road games at Seattle, Atlanta, St. Louis and San Francisco, as well as home games against the Chiefs and Seahawks. But there’s no reason to think the Cardinals can’t win four of those six, which is all they have to do to clinch the No. 1 seed.

2. Detroit Lions (7-3) NFC North leader. The Lions beat the Packers, which means they currently own the tiebreaker. But the Packers will have something to say about that when these teams meet in Green Bay in Week 17.

3. Philadelphia Eagles (7-3) NFC East leader. The Eagles are 2-0 in the NFC East, which means they own the tiebreaker in the division. But the Eagles and Cowboys still meet twice, in Dallas on Thanksgiving and in Philadelphia in Week 15.

4. Atlanta Falcons (4-6) NFC South leader. Someone has to win the NFC South, and right now the Falcons are on top because they’re 4-0 within the division. (And yes, for you math majors, that means they’re 0-6 against all teams outside the NFC South.) Atlanta will visit New Orleans in Week 16 in a game that may determine the winner of a bad division.

5. Green Bay Packers (7-3) First wild card team. The Packers would be the 5 seed right now because they lose the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Lions in the NFC North, but win the conference record tiebreaker with the Cowboys for playoff seeding.

6. Dallas Cowboys (7-3) Second wild card team. Dallas still has four NFC East games remaining, including two against the Eagles.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
7. San Francisco 49ers (6-4) Catching the Cardinals in the NFC West won’t be easy. The 49ers need to keep winning and hope the Lions, Eagles, Packers or Cowboys go into a slump.

8. Seattle Seahawks (6-4) Seattle is in the same position as San Francisco. The Seahawks and 49ers meet in Week 13 and Week 15. Those look like must-win games for both teams.

9. New Orleans Saints (4-6) Although Atlanta currently owns the tiebreaker, New Orleans is still the favorite to win the NFC South, as the Saints still get to face the Falcons at home. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a wild card team with a 10-6 or 11-5 record have to go on the road and play a 7-9 NFC South winner.

  1. I don’t think the teams ranked 2-6 will beat San Fran or Seattle if they meet them in the playoffs. The West will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

  2. Much as I would love to see the Cards succeed, to me it looks like GB v NE in Feb all the way.

  3. Niners don’t need Eagles or Cowboys to fall into a slump they just need to keep winning their own games. Niners control their own destiny. Eagles and Cowboys play each other twice still and they both have 3 losses so even if they split those 2 games with each other and win out both them and the Niners would have 4 losses each. Niners will knock them out of the Wild Card slot since they beat them both head to head.

  4. The Cardinals have beaten the top three of five playoff teams presently in contention… All those naysayers please tell me again why they’re a bad team???

  5. Cardinals schedule hasn’t been easy getting here, either. Beat a hot Charger team, 49ers, Eagles (With Foles), Cowboys, Rams team who has taken down the Seahawks, 49ers and Broncos in the last four weeks, and the Lions with a healthy Calvin Johnson.

They just keep finding a way to win these games. Held the Lions without a TD for the first time since 2009.

  6. So, the Super Bowl will played by the Cardinals and The New York Jets? Should be an interesting game!

  7. Wait …The Lions were 7-1 and supposed to beat AZ in the game for the Conference (with a backup QB)…NOPE. Wait the Eagles were 6-1 and supposed to beat AZ in the game for the conference….NOPE.
    It’s TIME for AZ RESPECT!
    9-1!!!

  8. I just can’t see Drew Stanton taking anyone to the Super Bowl, no matter how good of a coach and supporting cast he has. I say New England and Green Bay makes the most since come February.

  9. So conceivably, the Falcons could win the division with a 4-12 record. And seeing the other teams in the division, that’s a distinct possibility.

  10. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a wild card team with a 10-6 or 11-5 record have to go on the road and play a 7-9 NFC South winner

    —————————————————————

I dunno, it might be surprising to see the NFCS winner at 7-9 rather than 6-10….

  11. I’m a Packer fan, but they feed off teams that:

    – Have mediocre QB play (bonus points for lack of nobility)
    – Can’t generate pressure with their front 4
    – Don’t play 2 deep safeties

Now they are capable of beating the best teams in the league, but it usually relies on the offense playing nearly flawless and converting 3rd down after 3rd down. They don’t get the luxury of bombing the ball to Nelson repeatedly against the best defensive teams.

  12. I see the playoff picture coming down to the Cowboys or packers out of the nfc Cowboys have a system built for playoff football so like it or not better watch out for Romo and company. Afc comes down to Denver and New England wich should be one for the ages with the afc now it’s interesting from there how the match ups figure it’s anyone’s guess from there I believe it’s whoever establishes their game plan Rodgers can sling it away with any of them cowboys are ball control team and efficient well manning and Brady and well manning and Brady so yea my prediction is Dallas – New England Super Bowl

  13. Not only were the Vikings mentioned in this same conversation just a week ago, an ignorant Viking fan (yes, I realize that is redundant) suggested that after next Sunday, the Vikings and Packers would have the same record.

Funny how the NFL can change in a single Sunday.

Arizona just isn’t very intimidating, especially without Palmer. Nice D but they lack the offensive firepower…

  15. What no mention of the vikequeens after we all heard about their 5 th straight offseason champioship? Oh that’s right its because of the refs and clock operators.

  16. The Packers are playing bottom feeders, they still don’t have a great defense! If you want to point to the Mark Sanchez led Eagles or Bears as proof of the GREAT Packers’ Defense.. I’ll laugh in your face. If the Packers want to make it to the Super Bowl, they’d better pray they don’t play the Niners or Seahawks in the playoffs.

  17. The Cards will not get any respect unless they manage to go all the way. Even if they pull of the number one seed they will be much more vulnerable to be beaten at home in the playoffs then say SF SEA or even Green bay would be at home. Sorry just they way it goes when you have never won anything of importance. Admittedly that could change this year but still a long way to go.

    _________________-

The Packers defense has held teams to 20 points or less 6 of the last 8 games.

I also KNEW someone was going to say “Well…. Well the Packers are playing against a Back Up QB….” You know who else played a back up QB this weekend? The Lions, how did the work out for them?

The Packers defense has improved a lot since the first month of the season. With a lot of young players whether it be a Rookie, young guys returning from IR, or even Peppers learning a new position. They are getting more and more comfortable, that defense also gets the benefit of teams having to try to pass a lot… which is where a lot of GBs defenders can be playmakers.

  19. I have no problem with a 7-9 division champion making the playoffs – BUT they should NOT be awarded a home game. A wild card with a better record should be able to host that game.

  20. This will all change of course. But, no matter what, whomever gets the Falcons will luck out, thats like having a bye week. Likey NO comes up with that division.

  21. If you win your division with a sub-.500 record you should have to forfeit your home field advantage, and the wild card (assuming they’re over .500) should be the home team.

There should be some consequence for making the playoffs at 7-9 or 6-10.

  22. Even as a 49ers fan I can still give kudos to the Cards. Arians is a heck of coach and they just keep finding ways to win.

But I’ll be quite honest…………….I would much rather play in a playoff game IN Arizona than Seattle.

Packers at Cards for the NFC Title will be epic. Rodgers looking for redemption from 2009/10. Cards gunning to play a Super Bowl at home.

    Just epic.

    Lol.
You’d think by now fans would know there’s A LOT of football left to be played. A LOT. Teams change esp at this stage of the season.

And Packers fans of all the fans should know……the post season is nothing like the regular season.

  25. Man… The seahawks D is looking terrible this year and whats up with Sweezy and Britt? Them dudes been getting smoke on the o-line
    ————
Terrible? Hmm, ok, go pull up the team defense rankings. Hint, you won’t go far down the list to find the Seahawks.

  26. How many of the most high powered offenses during the regular season have stumbled in the post-season? Seriously, how many?

The ground is littered and piled up with high-powered offenses left to die in the post season.
Many led by none other than Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. Just food for thought…………

  27. Wait a minute – where is Washington and the Logical Voice ? Gruden just said they are close to being 7-2 and the QB from Mt Olympus is back ! Hello ? Area Code 202 ?

  28. I believe what fans are witnessing this year is the natural progression of what the league put in place years ago. The idea of parity is one that has levelled the playing field (no pun intended) but for all intents and purposes it is also reducing the league to mediocrity. What will fans think when this reduction in quality presents the scenario of a number one playoff seed having a 9-7 or 8-8 record? At this rate it is a very strong possibility in the near future.

  29. Call me a hater cause I’m a Seahawks fan, but I really don’t think the Cardinals have deserved a lot of the wins they’ve got. San Diego had them and blew it, Philadelphia fell asleep, the Rams led them for most of the game and the Lions apparently forgot they had Calvin Johnson back. Arizona will not host the Super Bowl.

To be clear, I am aware that I should be more concerned with the Seahawks even making the playoffs with the schedule they have left, but they’re getting pieces back, I think they beat the Cardinals next week.

Because this is regular season. The real games begin January. Thats usually when the true colors shine through.

What’s funny is it doesn’t matter if the Cards do lose in Seattle. Up by 3 games. 3 games! Seattle and San Francisco would have to win out to even think about a chance at winning the division, and we all know that isn’t going to happen.

  32. This might turn out to be Peyton Manning’s year after all. The only ring he could manage to win was against the worst quarterback in Super Bowl history (Rex Grossman). If Drew Stanton is on the other sideline, he might just have a shot at another. Maybe.

UMM WHEN HAVE THEY BEATEN THE RAIDERS?

  35. I think some of you need to refresh your understanding of the word parity. You are commenting on an article in which five teams out of 16 have 7 wins or more.

  36. The Cardinals won’t be caught in the west (and this is coming from a Niner fan) I believe they will lose at SF and at SEA, win against SEA in AZ and maybe drop one other game, This would mean SF would have to win out which would include winning in Seattle which has not proven easy for them lately to say the least.

Now I do believe that one of Dallas/Philly will finish with 6 losses (more likely Philly – see Mark Sanchez) this is the way I see it when it’s all said and done.

    1. Arizona 13-3
    2. Green Bay 12-4
    3.Dallas 11-5
    4. NFC South winner 7-9
    5. San Fransisco 11-5
    6. Detroit 11-5

    7-8 Philly and Seattle.

  37. Trust us – we Cards fans hope you 49ers/Hawks/GB fans remain delusional and keep repeating that they’d rather play in AZ than in SEA or SF,

Most of the clowns on this board have been wrong about the Cards all year. .. And will continue to be as the Cards keep dominating teams.

GB fans.. Be warned: Check the recent playoff records against the Cards. I assure you they are not afraid of GB any more than you view the Cards as a SB contender.

Last time the Cards were in the playoffs, they did quite well. They only lost to the SB winners both times they went out.

oh well.. Keep on doubting. if you havent stopped now, you never will.

UMM WHEN HAVE THEY BEATEN THE RAIDERS?
    ________

Sorry for my autocorrected Typo. NFC* South as in the Falcons.

I should have spelled it out clear as day because as it seems that football is hard for you to understand. Also the Raiders are in the West division.

  40. So the Cardinals win really wasn’t a fair win and they hold constantly and it never gets called. I saw at least 15 different holds on the cards throughout the game but apparently the refs for that game went down to the ol betting parlor and bet on the cards, or the NFL can’t fathom the fact that Rodgers might not make the playoffs if the Lions do well so they make them lose with questionable calls.
    Always for the lions
    The Calvin Johnson Rule
and now comes the Jeremy Ross Rule
If the NFL wants people to keep watching then they need to let teams play and stop favoring certain teams, the NFL is turning into a gd joke. The lions get 13 calls against them and the Cards have 3? Jim Caldwell is known to keep his teams disciplined it’s time to review that game and investigate those refs.

  41. Cardinals are a nice story, but trust me, the 49ers love the idea of playing in Arizona in the playoffs instead of Seattle. The 49ers will finish 11-5, the biggest game is Seattle at Philadelphia in 2 weeks, essentially the loser is done unless Dallas goes in the tank in Philadelphia’s case.

  42. you should probably mention all the tiebreakers between playoff hopefuls. Two biggest ones are between the NFC west hopefuls and the NFC east hopefuls

49ers have beaten Cowboys and Eagles
    Cowboys have beaten Seahawks
DAL and PHI have not played each other yet, but will twice
SF and SEA have not played each other yet, but will twice
SEA has not played PHI yet

So, if SF and DAL/PHI finish 10-6, SF gets the spot. If DAL and SEA finish 10-6, DAL gets the spot. Other tiebreakers are up in the air right now….

*** You guys do not have Kurt Warner to save you and the refs will call a facemask next time around… the worst non call I have ever seen and it cost the Pack the game in your dome.*** eerrr wait, the FailMary non catch and OPI was the worst, Cards facemask second.

  44. To all those who say the Cardinals can’t win the Super Bowl without an elite quarterback while relying on their Defense I have two words for you: Trent Dilfer

  45. We all know what ARZ has done up to this point. But, here’s the central question: Can the Cardinals beat SEA, SF and/or GB in the playoffs? I don’t know that Drew Stanton has it in him. If he can prove me wrong, they deserve to be NFC Champions. We’ll see.

  46. The Cardinals are going to keep winning if the refs keep getting down on their knees and going to town, they can get away with murder apparently.

  47. I’d like to say Cards are lucky, etc but that’s what good teams do; they get lucky over and over.

Look like Hawks from last year.

Only what if is whether anyone can rattle their QB.

  48. I wouldn’t begrudge any of the contenders their just due. Just about anything could still happen for those teams fortunate enough to still be playing meaningful football games.

  49. Packers in the SB? LOL The Packers FADE in the post when they have to face the big boys – just check the record for the last couple years.
The Cowboys have peaked and will find a way to be struggling with the Eagles for a playoff spot.
AZ & Detroit are cute stories and that’s how their seasons will end: Stanton will not survive a playoff game, the Lions are a fraud at 7-3 – they have played a really soft schedule.

San Fran has 5 of the next 6 at home (including the road game to oakland). Their D is balling and the O should really come alive with games against the Skins and Raiders, along with the suddenly soft seaFrauds.

    Niners. Bookit

  50. Not having Palmer caps the Cardinals’ upside. If they ever had to get in a shootout with someone like Aaron Rodgers, it’s likely that they wouldn’t come out of it with a win.

  51. Saints will beat Seattle at home with a 7-9 record. No? Its happened before. The last time the Seahawks were 7-9 and beat the Saints at home. Talk about redemption.

  52. hahahaha someone actually said Dallas was built for the playoffs hahahaha. Dallas has won exactly how many post-season games in the last 10 years? Come on, answer that. Dallas isnt going anywhere except home early for another year of sitting at home watching TV.

  53. does this take into consideration the inevitable injury that will keep glassjaw rodgers out of some games?

  54. Pontak123, Dude quit whining. You remind me of Notre Dame fans. They’ve been crying over the ” Bush push ” for years. With that said, I do in some way agree with you on certain players and teams getting calls and not getting calls. Last year the seahawks dB’s mugged the crap out of people all season (leading to rules change ) but didn’t get called. They were the feel good story in the NFL last year. What with the whole “12” man thing and going for Guinness records and such. Well this year is the cardinals turn with all the injuries and finding ways to win, and fighting through adversity and with the most likeable coach in the league. Don’t believe me just ask any of the sports commentators. So it really doesn’t matter what you think about bad calls or anything else, the cardinals winning the SB in their own stadium is just the feel good story of the year. And you all know how we love feel good stories. Go Cowboys!!!!!

  55. Hats off to the Card’s for a 9-1 season. Problem for the Cards is, a 9-1 record doesn’t equal a SB win. Ask NE what a 16-0 season did for them?

The problem for the Cards is, they need Stanton to elevate his play throughout a playoff run. That, and Stanton isn’t Kurt Warner. Good luck with that.
