Rivers, McCoy dismiss talk of “very severe” rib injury

Chargers tight end Antonio Gates says quarterback Philip Rivers is playing through a “very severe rib injury.” But Rivers himself denies that.

“I’m no more banged up than other quarterback in the league,” Rivers said, via Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego. “All good.”

Chargers coach Mike McCoy didn’t directly deny that Rivers has a rib injury. But he said that Rivers hasn’t needed treatment and hasn’t missed any practice time, which suggests that if Rivers has an injury to his ribs, it isn’t “very severe.”

“Philip has not missed a snap in practice. He’s not been getting treatment for a rib injury,” McCoy said.

McCoy says there’s no doubt that Rivers will practice this week and start Sunday against the Rams.
