Lions’ Dominic Raiola admits going at a Patriot’s knees

AP

Lions center Dominic Raiola admitted after today’s blowout loss at New England that he purposely went at the knees of Patriots defensive tackle Zach Moore on the final play of the game.

Raiola said he was angry that the Patriots scored a late touchdown to go up 34-9 instead of just taking a knee. Raiola said his shot at Moore was retaliation.

I cut him,” Raiola said, via the Detroit Free Press. “We took a knee, so I cut the nose [tackle]. They went for six. They went for a touchdown at two minutes. They could have took three knees and the game could have been over. It’s football. He wants to keep playing football, let’s play football. Not a big deal. It’s football.”

Raiola was not penalized, and he may not be fined, either. It’s not illegal for an offensive lineman to go low on a defensive lineman, as long as that defensive lineman isn’t also engaged up high and as long as the hit isn’t from behind. But the Patriots weren’t happy about it, and understandably so.

“I just heard what happened, but that was stupid,” Wilfork said. “I didn’t see it, but from what I heard . . . you’re taking a knee. They’d get mad if we were just to blow up one of their players, so I mean, it’s just uncalled for. But at the same time, you always have to protect yourself, so you always have to play with your neck on a swivel and being alert for 60 minutes, and it came down to it today on a bonehead play like that. But luckily no one got hurt and we can move on.”

Greg Schiano may not see anything wrong with trying to take out an opponent on a kneel-down play, but most NFL linemen will. Raiola was at the very least being unsportsmanlike. And by admitting it afterward, he was also being stupid.

  1. as long as he doesn’t mind some O Lineman doing the same thing to him, I guess?

No. Professionals shouldn’t purposely try to hurt another one. Ever.

You know, unless you’re in the UFC or an assassin or something.

  2. So because Raiola’s pride was hurt, he intentionally commits a malicious act that could end a career.

And he’s admitted it — and he WON’T even be fined?

    Ridiculous.

  3. While an undersized venerable presence on the Lions’ O line, Raiola has a history of saying and doing stupid things. His career in Detroit will be defined as much for his longevity as his inability to make any meaningful contributions towards sustained success and his hot headed tantrums that either caused harm to his team on the field or damage to his reputation off the field. A classic Neanderthal that never learned how to win.

  4. The Patriots may have gone for it to make it 34-9, which was the exact opposite final score of Brady’s very first game… Which was against Detroit.

In any case…going at someone’s knee is idiotic.

  5. No class from Dominic Raiola. Hey fatty, it’s not the Patriots job to stop their own offense. So your response is to take a cheap shot at a rookie on your own kneel downs? If anything, big picture at that point, wouldn’t the Lions want the Patriots at full strength going up against the Packers next week?

  6. Tedy Bruschi pointed out this guy was known for this type of play, I think his quote was this guy tries to get in shots by hitting a defensive player on the pile late. What comes around, goes around. Although no Pats player will have a chance this year because the Lions don’t appear to be going very far.

  7. He should have told his teammates to not draw personal foul calls when the pats were going to take a field goal. The patriots did milk the clock until then.

  8. What’s Raiola complaining about? On the Pats last drive they threw the ball one time in 4+ minutes to get a first down. 50 of the 66 yards on that drive were on the ground. It is not the Pats fault that the Lions called two timeouts during that drive to extend the game. It was also not the Pats fault that the Lions committed a personal foul to give the Pats a first down after the Pats kicked a field goal.

If Raiola wants to cheap shot knees, he should cut Jim Caldwell’s knees for the timeouts during that drive, or his teammate Mosley’s knees for the dumb personal foul.

  9. Rumor is that this is Dom’s last year with Detroit. He got very angry when the Lions drafted a center. Based on this stunt, I won’t be sorry to see him go.

I also thought it was classless for the Pats to go for the TD when the game was in hand, but Zach Moore wasn’t the guy who made the decision. Why potentially take away his career for something he didn’t do? Makes no sense. This is just plain rotten. There’s no room for it.

If the teams play each other next season and someone takes Brady’s head off, goes full Alzado on him, I’m cool with it. You can bet that Tom had a say in going for that final score.

Patriots are a classless team but this is just stupid. Why do you even admit to it? Just keep your mouth shut and move on!

    C’mon man!

    ———
Boo hoo, the Patriots ran up the score.

It’s not classless to score a TD… The best defense in the league could have stopped it. That’s called football.

However, it is definitely classless to go at someone’s knees on purpose.

I’ve never seen another team that takes so many cheap shots in all my life. Detroit is the same no matter who the coach is… undisciplined sore losers.

  11. You had four quarters to stop them and failed. Maybe you should cut block Staffird for stinking up the joint at 14 for 40.

They can’t play each other for 4 years unless it’s in the Super Bowl. Also… Detroit tries to take Brady’s head off every time they play already. They are the dirtiest team in the league.

  13. He doesnt admit “going to the knees.” He admits “playing football because the patriots wanted to still play.”

Cant blame him. Theyve been famous for that for such a long time – essentially doing what a kid does in madden just to pad stats. Well? You want to keep playing? Get ready to keep receiving legal blocks.

  14. As a huskers fan what a weekend. Bo must go loses to Minnesota then suh and Dominic act like morons. U guys got it handed to u. Move along little skippy. Who said u can’t try to score up big late. Wah wah wah. Don’t like it stop them…..

  15. What a classless move. If you’re angry then STOP them. Raiola should be suspended. This is why the Lions are the Lions. Completely undisciplined. It starts with the head coach. Sounds like the Lions need to fire Caldwell.

  16. Pats running up the score not classy.
Raiola playing hard on a give up play, also not classy.
Both are legal and both are aren’t classy. Nice win for New England now everyone can move on like Wilfork said.

  17. If this was about Denver there’d be a THOUSAND whiny posts about Manning padding stats, seeking records ect.

  18. Maybe they shouldn’t spear the long snapper with the crown of the helmet and let the field goal get kicked.

  19. If this was about Denver there’d be a THOUSAND whiny posts about Manning padding stats, seeking records ect.

    ——————————–
the difference is brady handed the ball off…

  20. You don’t think he could cause an injury if he wanted too? Not condoning Raiola’s actions because he is an idiot, but also realize he wasn’t seriously going to take out the Dude’s knee….he was sending the message he was displeased. And whatever the Pats reason for scoring the TD at that time, they know a certain subset of the players/fans on the other team will take offense. So deal with it. both sides.

  21. Just another story for trolls who hate the Patriot’s to spew their normal garbage. I’m sure you trolls wouldn’t want to trade teams and coaching. After all, everybody else in the NFL is so classy except the Pat’s.

  22. Anybody in the Patriots organization calling someone else classless is just comical. #PotMeetKettle

  23. The next time Raiola plays the Pats, on whatever team he’s with, he will be hurt in the pileup. Take it to the bank.
The man is as dumb as a wall to admit it openly!

If this were about Denver, there would be a thousand posts about Manning getting blown out of Super Bowls and how he can’t win in Foxboro.

  25. And if the Pats hadn’t gone for it after the Lions speared the long snapper, Pats haters would be on here saying the Pats are cowards or something equally stupid.

  26. Bad move by a player/team that knows it is out matched… and was pressing to keep pace with the Pack… be smart and try to make week 17 mean something… GO PACK GO!!!!

  27. It was a legal hit. It’s not that dangerous of a play and it seems appropriate given the Pats running up the score.

Downvote all you want but he shouldn’t be fined for this.

  28. The really stupid part of this is… Was he trying to help the Packers by hurting a Patriot in garbage time??? Thanks

  29. You want to be called the #1 scoring defense in the league by teams kneeling down and not score on you? The Pats will make you earn it!!! They want to crush your ego, in the event they meet you down the road you won’t think you stand a chance against them.

  30. Question for everyone.. What do you get when you combine the following ingredients?? Head coach that cheats to win and leaves the field without shaking hands. Owner who overlooks his team cheating to win superbowls and gets his buddy commish to destroy evidence. Loudmouth, insecure, and obnoxious fanbase that gets upset when someone remotely mentions anything about spygate?? The least classiest organization in football.

    ===================

lol, that’s pretty cool. 1 for 3 for 6 yards a 42.4 passer rating. Pretty auspicious start wouldn’t you say?

As for Riolo, if he was paying attention then maybe he woulda realized the late TD was a bit of comeuppance for the dirty play by the Lions. Apparently things like facts just don’t seem to register in this guy’s head.

  32. On a team lead bye Albert Haynesworth jr, not surprising… Can’t wait for Snyder to back the brinks up for this dog deposit. They are are almost as classy as riding in a Chrysler.

  33. This is great news. The Lions that we all know have returned. Hopefully this behavior will continue (just not against my Packers) and hopefully the Lions will not win another game this year.

  34. Don’t blame him.. The Patriots have been paying off these Refs now for years. Mostly when they are at home but they find ways to do it at away games sometimes but when they play at home the game is just as fixed as WWE.. It goes from CBS to the Refs..
You think it’s a coincidence CBS will show Kraft in the owners box then Patriots score a Touch Down “Cue to Kraft celebrating” It’s remarkable nobody says a word about it. I’m guessing they are in Krafts pockets too. I’m sure he has NBC on the pay roll and FOX. It’s funny Patriots dominate in regular season yet when it’s playoff time when maybe the get some heat like “hey we can;t make this look too stupid everyone is watching” Patriots lose! They have NOT won a superbowl since they got caught spying, yet they are always “the best team in The NFL” Nobody wants to admit what is really going on here.. This team got caught CHEATING and NOTHING happened! They suspend guys for 8 games for smoking pot, a drug that is legal is some states yet they KNOW EXACTLY EVERY PLAY THE OTHER TEAM IS DOING AND THEY GET NOTHING! For younger people to understand it would be like you are playing MADDEN on PS2 and the guy you are playing is looking at your controller..So he knows what play you are running..Easy to win that way

  35. The Pats are classless. They’ve been doing that crap for years. Good for Raiola, I”ll make a contribution to his fine.

If I was a player and the Pats pulled that, I’m taken somebody out, plain and simple. I’ll take my 15 yards and a fine.

  36. You’re not a player and I doubt you have the money to pay any fine or contribute to it, never mind taking anyone out. Another keyboard tough guy. Pats players are furious and rightly so. You don’t try to hurt someone because you got blown out.

  37. Apparently, a ton of people responding here didn’t watch the game. The Pats scored 24 pts in the first half…and 10 points in the 2nd. As other’s have mentioned, they ran the vast majority of the final drive, and the only reason it wasn’t 27-9 (instead of 34-9) was because a Lions player went helmet to helmet on the long snapper.

I’m not sure exactly how much more the Patriots are supposed to let off that gas to assuage the tears of everyone else complaining about them running up the score. Were they supposed to punt on 1st down?

The Lions got wrecked, they had the opportunity to make it a lower scoring game via stopping 2 Blount rushes for TD (including the aforementioned ‘running up the score’ play), which shouldn’t have been a problem given their defensive stats up to this game. They also left Tim Wright all alone in the endzone, twice.

  38. The # 1 defense whining… You have to earn the accolade. The Pats bore the humiliation of being pummeled by the media at the start of the season. Now they are working hard on proving them wrong. Their mantra is you play for 60 minutes and go do your job. You should have done your job. Rodgers and Peyton ran up the score even on hapless teams and people here call the Pats classless? And this clown wanted the Pats to ease up on his team as if his team needed mercy and then tried to hurt a player. Nothing but a classless bully. You’re a disgrace to your team.

  39. GO FOR TWO SPORTS says:

Do you realize how totally stupid you make yourself look?

The Patriots buy everyone off but have not won anything for years… I wonder why that would be, maybe they don’t pay enough for play-off wins!!!!!

Come back when you make positive contributions instead of fantasy ones!

  40. I knew when Belicheat went for that TD instead of kneeing it down there might be a little payback there. Really not smart of him to put his players in danger.

  41. Seems to me that if the Pats were trying to run up the score, they would have run a passing play. they ran the ball expecting to be stopped and kill clock time, and pin the lions deep in their own territory. Just a cheap shot by a dirty player. I hope karma gets him.

  42. An NFL team complaining about running up the score??? The #1 Defense in the league at that?????

The Patriots went for the field goal FIRST, going for the TD only when the penalty put them on the door step.

Instead of whining, why didn’t the best ranked run defense just STOP them?

  43. Dominic is an imbecile, he deserves some form of punishment worse than merely playing for the Lions.

  44. That’s the Lions in a nutshell – they play smash-mouth and preen about how bad they are and so the Pats play smash-mouth and guess who comes out on top.

    Again.

The last time the Lions won the NFL title was 2 years before the Boston Patriots team was even established.

  45. I think some folks didn’t watch the game…getting the last of the Doritos out of the bag, or were you scratching it? Pats were content to kick a field goal, but another bone-head Lion decided to take a stupid penalty. With a new set of downs at the one, what do you expect?
I’ve liked the Lions, but their propensity for blowing up like a kid having a tantrum in a shopping mall is getting old. A change of coach has failed to smarten them up. Another season of saying they have so much potential, but they shoot themselves at all the wrong times.

  46. You know they’re back to the top of the mountain when the ‘running up the score’ gang comes out of the woodwork.

  47. I’d be appalled if there’s not a fime coming after he addmitted to trying to take a player out on a kneeldown play and is allowed to play unpunished for a malicious act, it’s the kittens so he’s got Suh to teach him civility and strength of carachter which translates into face stomping and ball shots and dirty play all around whenever you feel dissed which is 24/7 for the kittens. MEOW!!!
No SB ever, never in the SB era has this team been to the big game, embarressing considering they’re an original franchise from the NFL and had Barry Sanders playing for ever, one of the best weapons in the NFL and nothing, not even a sniff of the bag the trophy is transported in, Detroit is what we thought they were, LOW CLASS!!!

  48. I find it hard to believe that this team can’t stay classy on the field. So what, you lost … big deal, go to the film room there’s always next week.

Don’t try to spear the long snapper … give the Pats a 1st & goal from inside the five and not expect them to take a run at the endzone.

Then you got this idiot trying to intentionally injure on a kneel down play.

Regardless, starts with the coach, who from my observations looked like he was in diapers in terms of game management.

  49. i don’t care a bit about either team so hopefully my opinion is neutral. if the Pats were playing till the buzzer why shouldn’t the lions?
