Report: Vikings general counsel has been working against Peterson

So who was Vikings running back Adrian Peterson referring to when he said that someone with the organization didn’t support him?

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Peterson was referring to Vikings general counsel Kevin Warren.  Schefter also reports that Warren and the NFL have been working together to ensure that Peterson doesn’t play this season.

That fits squarely with our (or at least my) strong belief that someone decided back in the middle of September that Peterson wouldn’t play again this year, and that every decision, breached agreement, and/or misapplied policy has been aimed at keeping Peterson from playing this year.

“I know there’s people in the organization that support me and there’s people that I know internally that has not been supporting me,” Peterson told USA Today recently, without naming names.

A request for comment has been sent by PFT to the Vikings, but they’re less than 40 minutes from kickoff against the Packers.

  1. Of course its an attorney whose opposing this. Football operation people don’t care, they’re only concerned with getting wins.

But this just shows even greater disfunction is the worst franchise in the NFL when the attorneys get to overrule the football people.

  2. For the last time, AP will NOT be playing in DALLAS next year.

They can’t spare the salary cap space it would take to sign him, and they kinda have 2 biggies of their own to re-sign: Demarco and Dez

AP will NOT be wearing a star next year…

  3. So is everybody going to jump up & down about how Goodell isn’t doing his job? Or how he should be fired? He is the owners puppet & doing what he is being asked to do in this situation so the wilfs & every other owner for that matter doesn’t have to get their hands dirty & alienate fans/ players.

  4. Dude Vikings havent had Peterson’s back like you’d expect them to. Even the fans dont seem to keen on him, heck the governor straight up blasted him.
If I was him I would have lost some love for Minnesota.

  5. There’s always someone calling for someone else to lose their job. Why do you want him to be fired, he’s just doing his job, Wilf and Speilman are likely of the same mindset, and they don’t want him to play for the Vikings ever, but they want to retain his rights so they can trade him and get a 1st round pick. They need to play him or release him.

  6. If true, Warren should be fired immediately. Lawyers are not trained in public affairs, and he has exceeded his fiduciary obligation to the team

  7. Apparently the peanut gallery had officially won out against the legal, system, the cba policy, the nfl conduct policy, any sense of forgiveness and the concept of fair competition.

  8. Zimmer knows that he can create a high character winning atmosphere without low character adrian peterson.

If big name high priced running backs won games… Minnesota would have had some winning seasons.

Take peterson’s money and spend it on offensive linemen and defensive players.

  9. is anyone surprised by this? the viking want nothing to do with peterson. he will be gone after the season if not sooner.

  10. People, this has nothing to do with political correctness, as you would call it. It has everything to do with money and the future of the Vikings. They are going younger, they need to put the money into younger players. Until Bridgewater gets up to speed they are never going to compete for a Super Bowl. Peterson will be too old by then. This just gave the Vikings a reason to dump him without as much backlash. They learned from the Packers and Favre what dumping an old guy can do. It’s a chess move, get over it.

  11. Considering the sheer number of player arrests in Minnesota, is it any surprise that the Vikings have an in house lawyer? I don’t know the guy but I am willing to be he might have a 4 year old son so that’s what keeps him motivated to do the right thing.

  12. What is AP’s definition of “support”. Look the other way and lobby for the lowest punishment possible? Some people believe advocating for fair (not necessarily the lightest) consequences for actions is the best support for someone you care about.

  13. Peterson should be banned for life from the NFL. What Peterson did is 100 times worse than what Rice did. Neither of them should be allowed the privilege of playing in the NFL. At least Rice has shown what appears to be real remorse. Peterson plays his role like he is the victim, not his 4 year old son whom he beat with a stick.

It is due time the NFL make an example of players who think they are too important to follow life’s rules.

Step back into reality bro. There was not one mention of the cowboys in this article. Sorry, but they’re just not relevant HERE.

  15. The team lawyer isn’t going to work with the NFL behind the teams back. Warren is advocating for whatever the owners asked him to advocate for.

  16. The Union should come out squarely against the Vikings.
Meanwhile, the players should all sit out today’s game, in protest against the owner and his non commitment to win.
This is unbelievable. Collusion between team and league to harm a player? This sets bad prescedent.

  17. When you have a governor calling for your job then it really is time to move on. Political correctness in a liberal bastion such as Minnesota it leads you to think he is already blackballed and will never ever please those folks up there.

  18. Smh at the conservative tea party morons blaming so-called political correctness” and “liberals” for this whole mess caused by Peterson’s decision to beat a 4 year old with a stick.

  19. Adrian Peterson WILL be a Cowboy next season.

    Dez will get franchise tag.

DeMarco Murray gets rode hard to whatever they can accomplish this season, then let him get paid by someone else to get injured like he always does……

Jerry Jones knows Cowboys one of the only franchises that can take the PR hit of bringing in AP

  20. It’s over. The Vikings will not be relevant until the second year of the new stadium and only then will they barely make the playoffs. Sell the team to Glen Taylor so we can make it through these harsh winters with something else to watch.

  21. Nice to see that someone in the Vikings office has some common sense! Peterson doesn’t deserve to play for the Vikings, better yet doesn’t deserve to play in the NFL period!

Since it looks like Peterson will play somewhere next year, I think he will go to Dallas in an even up trade for Bryant. Peterson will rework his contract to make it more salary cap friendly.

  22. It’s pretty obvious the Vikings front office has moved on from Adrian. Despite what the coaches or players are saying, Adrian is done in minny.

  23. Warren’s likely just the fall guy. Minnesota fans who want AP to stay can’t retaliate against Warren.

What irks me, is ev’one could see months ago that the NFL fix was in. Vike’s didn’t want him back because they want out of AP’s contract. And Goodell is beholding to the owners…i.e., doing whatever dirty work the owners direct him to do.

So, be honest, and stop with the charade, and the press conferences about ‘a lack of remorse’ and other such crappola!

NFL, anyone with half a brain could tell the fix was in…kinda like 20 years of fighting against acknowledging CONCUSSIONS, you know…it’s ‘always’ about the money for the NFL.

  24. He is only doing what the team owner asked him to do. The owners just don’t want to be the ones saying it.

  25. Let me start out by saying that I’ve not seen the pictures of the bruises on Peterson’s kid. That being said, corporal punishment does NOT necessarily equal child abuse. Something to ponder for those who think AP should be banned for life. If that automatically happens in this and other domestic violence cases, who suffers more than the women and children from the lost income? The player should pay a SIGNIFICANT penalty for what he’s done. But an automatic expulsion would only stop women from coming forward in the first place. Whatever the NFL comes up with, the women and children shouldn’t miss out on the income because of the player’s actions.

  26. Fire him? Yea I’m sure he’s gone rouge and he’s not acting on anyone’s orders. What a bunch of dopes. And yes Torot all that stuff goes out the window when you beat a 4 yr old child, including my compassion

  27. “I know there’s people in the organization that support me and there’s people that I know internally that has not been supporting me”

Does it bother anyone else that he apparently never paid attention in English class?
Did AP go to UNC for their special academics for athletes?
Or are the rumors true and all the major athletic programs have the legendary “basket weaving” type classes for athletes?

  28. It’s going to be difficult for Peterson to play again even for a team that wants him. You know the sponsors whose names are on the backdrop at teams press conferences? What sponsor is going to want to have their name prominently glowing behind Peterson when he speaks to the press. And how is a team going to feature him in any promotional activity? He has an uphill battle, but it’s of his own making.

  29. If you have the “team’s” lawyer colluding with the NFL to keep any player away from the team, he no longer works for the team, he works for the league. It’s time the team gets a new general council, one that works for the Vikings not Commishioner Rodger Godcomplex.

    Ap went to Oklahoma….

  31. Huh? “But…But…your black.” (Lethal Weapon 2) Kevin Warren is black and the General Counsel for the Vikings. Hmm. I guess where I am confused is this, last time I checked, he works for the owners not the other way around. So does that not mean ownership does not want him back? Aggh? Just when you think the soap opera couldn’t get any sillier, it does. This just blows a hole is those seat licenses that you are charging for the new stadium.

Tell you what, why don’t you move to Dallas and keep Bryant there with you. We don’t need a Prima Donna messing up our chemistry. Only so not so informed fan could come up with such a idea.

You easily forget that the Minnesota Vikings since Favre left has been Adrian Peterson. The man blows out a knee busts his butt to come back and nearly breaks Eric Dickerson’s 18 year old record (in 2012) and never once did the man complain about being the only guy doing jack squat on the team. 8 and 9 defenders in the box, because we don’t have a passing offense. Who commands that kind of respect? Really? Whether he went over board in disciplining his child or not is not up to fair-weather fans like you to judge.

Josh Brent killed a teammate while driving under the influence. Far worse than the whipping the child took, yet Josh did his time and is back with his old team the Cowboys let me guess that is fine with you right? Hypocrite!!!!

    “Ap went to Oklahoma….”

I figured he hadn’t gone to UNC, just making a point. My mother would have used a belt on me if I ever uttered a single sentence as poorly constructed* as the typical NFL football player quoted in the media. (No, not a switch.)

    * I hate to say it, but at times it appears that a majority of the league’s players might very well have these literacy issues.

I don’t know how they graduated High School, let alone college. And as for role models? These guys have nothing I would want my kids to emulate.

  34. “I know there’s people in the organization that support me and there’s people that I know internally that has not been supporting me,”

    Nice grammar, acorn brain.

  35. here’s a little note to stick in the back of your mind AP,
when you beat the hell out of your 4 year old with a stick, you’re not gonna find too many supporters in your corner. for a supposedly college educated person, i would think you would know this.
