Report: Michael Vick the choice to start if he’s healthy

AP

After the Jets were crushed by the Bills in Detroit on Monday night, Rex Ryan said he didn’t know whether Michael Vick or Geno Smith would be the team’s starting quarterback against the Dolphins in Week 13.

A pair of reports from Jets beat writers point to Vick being the choice. Both Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News and Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com report that Vick will be Ryan’s choice if his calf is OK after injuring it on Monday. Vick did not think the injury was serious after the game.

Mehta adds the caveat that Vick will be the choice if he’s healthy and if Ryan is the one making the call about the starting quarterback. That suggests that General Manager John Idzik and/or others in the organization might want to see Smith play out the string in hopes of seeing something that Smith didn’t show in 24 consecutive starts over the last two seasons.

That might be an unlikely outcome, but so is meaningful improvement from the offense with either player at quarterback.

  1. Still laughing over the, “if Vick were the starter the entire season…” comments. lol silly jets.

  2. Why, why, why, why… Why isn’t Matt Sims getting first team reps this week and going out there for the start? I have never understood teams that are THIS bad insisting on staying with FAILURES at QB when there are other guys on the roster.

    Flip a coin and deactivate the one who loses between Vick and Geno. Let Sims have a crack. Worst case scenario? They end up with a better draft pick.

  3. If I were in charge I’d fire Ryan right now just for making that decision. The season is over; they’re out of the playoff picture even mathematically. It no longer even matters if Vick is the better QB at this moment. All that matters is that there’s a chance Smith might actually get better and justify what was invested in him. Even if starting Vick a few weeks ago was justifiable, that argument no longer holds water now.

  4. I can not understand this decision by Rex. It’s like he wants to give Jets fans and ownership the finger on the way out of town.

    Vick only has 17 completions over 2 games, will not be with the team next year and has no upside. This is definately Rex giving the team and fans the middle finger.

  5. Johnson really needs to step in now and release at least Idzik and ideally Ryan, too. It’s not a dumpster fire anymore. It’s a raging inferno.

    LOL..Every NFL fan , player and owner, gives the jets the finger on a daily basis…no doubt there.

    All the jets, fans etc do ALL year…is talk their crap. They talk as if…SOMEHOW …the jets were relevant in the last 40+years..not even close. Maybe worst franchise in NFL history.

    So, We love their dedication to playing ‘jet football’ & it does not matter who QB is, Vivk Geno, Richard Todd,,makes no change at all..and truly jets and their fans like comic book characters.

    So..sure Rex gives you the finger…we all do.

  7. Informal PFT pole –

    Biggest black hole of suck this season –

    Jets = thumbs up

    Washington = thumbs down

  8. His calf injury? As I said last night he seemed fine after he got benched because of his limp.

    Other QBs play with broken backs, broken ribs and all sorts of bumps and bruises. Vick’s a wimp who takes himself out of games when the going gets rough. Always has.

    I would have released him this morning for quitting on his team.
