Texans coach Bill O’Brien didn’t say much about the status of quarterback Ryan Mallett, but the fact they’ve signed a replacement should tell you what you need to know.

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans are adding former Bills quarterback Thaddeus Lewis to the mix.

With Mallett out for the year with a torn pectoral muscle, the Texans needed someone to back up Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Tom Savage.

O’Brien coached Lewis at Duke in 2006, and he’s gone onto journeyman status since. He’s done time with the Rams, Browns, Lions and Bills, starting five games in Buffalo last year.
