Week 12 power rankings

AP

1. New England Patriots (No. 2; 9-2):  Gronk like cheese.

2. Green Bay Packers (No. 3; 8-3):  Lambeau Field will never host a Super Bowl, but this weekend it could be hosting a Super Bowl preview.

3. Arizona Cardinals (last week No. 1; 9-2):  There’s a little space on the bandwagon.  It won’t last long.

4. Dallas Cowboys (No. 4; 8-3):  If Jerry Jones gets the bigger piece of the wishbone, we know what he’ll be asking for.

5. Philadelphia Eagles (No. 5; 8-3):  With Cowboys, Seahawks, Cowboys on the immediate horizon, we’ll know plenty about this team soon.

6. Denver Broncos (No. 6; 8-3):  The scoreboard operator was almost the least of the team’s concerns on Sunday.

7. Cincinnati Bengals (No. 11; 7-3-1):  But for that tie against Carolina, the Bengals would be caught in a four-way tie atop the AFC North.

8. Pittsburgh Steelers (No. 9; 7-4):  Tied for second sounds a lot better than tied for last.

9. Indianapolis Colts (No. 10; 7-4):  Luck vs. Griffin I finally arrives, with a lot less sizzle than expected in 2012.

10. Seattle Seahawks (No. 13; 7-4):  Like the last time the Seahawks met the 49ers, this one could be an elimination game.

11. Baltimore Ravens (No. 12; 7-4):  Justin Forsett keeps piling up yards — and votes for comeback player of the year.

12. Detroit Lions (No. 7; 7-4):  Four days before eating turkey, Dominic Raiola acted like a turd.

13. Kansas City Chiefs (No. 8; 7-4):  A franchise that has fought through plenty of adversity in recent years has another challenge in Eric Berry’s illness.

14. San Francisco 49ers (No. 14; 7-4):  If Colin Kaepernick is great with a capital “G”, he really did get screwed with a capital “S” on his latest contract.

15. Cleveland Browns (No. 18; 7-4):  If Johnny Manziel ever throws a touchdown pass, it would be wise for his teammates to not ask for a hug.

16. Miami Dolphins (No. 15; 6-5):  If Joe Philbin keeps losing games he could have won, he’ll be losing a job he could’ve kept.

17. San Diego Chargers (No. 16; 7-4):  The win over the Rams felt — and looked — like a loss.

18. Buffalo Bills (No. 19; 6-5):  If the Lions don’t make it to the playoff’s maybe Detroit’s other team will.

19. Houston Texans (No. 17; 5-6):  “Ryan Fitzpatrick can save our season,” said no one ever.

20.  Chicago Bears (No. 21; 5-6):  Barely beating bad teams isn’t the way to convince anyone the Bears aren’t bad news.

21. New Orleans Saints (No. 20; 4-7):  Rob Ryan won’t be back, and it has nothing to do with someone finally deciding to make him a head coach.

22. Minnesota Vikings (No. 22; 4-7):  If they lost to the Packers by only three without Adrian Peterson, how would the Vikings have performed with him?

23. St. Louis Rams (No. 23; 4-7):  They’d be a playoff team if they only played playoff teams.

24. Atlanta Falcons (No. 24; 4-7):  Mike Smith should try to call a time out just before his postseason meeting with the owner.

25. New York Giants (No. 25; 3-8):  “We’re still the best team in New York!”

26.  Carolina Panthers (No. 26; 3-7-1):  “Can we get more bye weeks?”

27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 27; 2-9):  “We’re still only two games out of first place!”

28. New York Jets (No. 28; 2-9):  Maybe they should have tried to be a zillion ways plus one better.

29. Tennessee Titans (No. 29; 2-9):  Forget the Titans.  Wait, everyone already has.

30. Washington (No. 30; 3-8):  Jay Gruden has “every intent” to get into broadcasting.

31. Oakland Raiders (No. 32; 1-10):  Sio Moore apparently thinks the Raiders were relegated to the CFL.

32. Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 31; 1-10):  As they prepare to welcome Tom Coughlin back to Jacksonville, some fans may be wondering whether it makes sense to lure him back for a longer visit.

  1. Green Bay — clawing its way to the top.

This will be a great football weekend because of one game.

  2. I know we’re not dominating but we win 3 in a row, Chiefs just lose to the Raiders and we beat the Chiefs earlier this year and they are still ranked ahead of us?

    Come onnnnnn man!

  3. 7. Cincinnati Bengals (No. 11; 7-3-1): But for that tie against Carolina, the Bengals would be caught in a four-way tie atop the AFC North.

    —————

But for that tie against Carolina, the Bengals would be a full game in front of everyone in the division, rather than in first by half a game.

  4. Actually, if Mike Nugent had made that kick the Bengals wouldn’t have that tie, and they’d be a full game up on the division. They’re winning it, anyway.

  5. I sure am looking forward to the Packers playing the Patriots in the Every Other Expert Picks Them to Play Each Other in the Super Bowl at the Start of the Season for the Past Five Years Bowl.

  6. The Steelers are way too high here. No defense at all with the washed up Polamalu and others.

  7. Steelers too high: washed up defense led by Polamalu
Redskins too high: that team is pure garbage with Bob Griffin at QB
Browns: too low: whooped on the over rated Steelers so they should at least be ahead of them.

  8. These power rankings and whoever wins the Superbowl is a complete sham because the NFL is fixed. Case in point – Refs allowed dirty hits on RGIII last season and he never truly recovered. Its simply not fair. What an embarrasment to the Sport.

  9. “Lambeau Field will never host a Super Bowl”

Every NFL city should have the privilege of hosting a Super Bowl. I’d love to see one at Lambeau, preferably during a snowstorm.

  10. After America suffers through obnoxious relatives on Thursday, followed by the insanity of black Friday, they’ll be treated to a quality inter-conference match up between New England and Green Bay on Sunday.
    .

  11. To all the Cincy fans pointing out that the Bengals would be a game ahead of the division if Mike Nugent makes that kick against Carolina, I just want to say that I AGREE…

…I also agree that they should win the division regardless of where they stand now, so let me be the first to congratulate you all on your team’s fourth straight embarrassing January loss.

  12. speaking of a “zillion”, is that the under/over for GB-Pats?

    Thanks for killing defense Rog.

  13. Paroits are overrated. I would put them in the 5-10 range.

Colts and Denver underrated. I would probably put in the 3-5 range.

To each his own though. I hope everybody have a good Turkey Day.

  14. texans are way too high. the product they put on the field last sunday was as bad as I’ve seen. Rick Smith and this new coach need to go. Last year’s draft class is a failure of epic proportions, and anyone associated with it, needs to be gone.

  15. 5. Philadelphia Eagles (No. 5; 8-3): With Cowboys, Seahawks, Cowboys on the immediate horizon, we’ll know plenty about this team soon.
    ========================================

You didn’t learn enough when Green Bay blew them out? They’re 1-3 against winning teams and you still have them at #5?

  16. Bengals MIGHT win the division.
Bengals SHOULD make the playoffs. If so,
Bengals will DEFINITELY be one and done.

  17. 31. Oakland Raiders (No. 32; 1-10): Sio Moore apparently thinks the Raiders were relegated to the CFL.
    ————————-
    About one slot too high.

  18. 25. New York Giants (No. 25; 3-8): “We’re still the best team in New York!”

Remind me again what state the city of Buffalo is in?

  19. So losing to the Jets and barely squeaking out a win against the Titans has the Steelers rock solid at #8?

I predict the Steelers will lose to the Saints this Sunday since Big Ben’s usual two good games per year are already long in the rearview mirror but don’t worry …… the Steelers will UNLEASH HELL in December.

  20. Paroits are overrated

The Paroits have been blowing out the best teams in the league. Hard to imagine what it takes if that isn’t good enough.

  21. Stop hating on the Steelers. If certain players are washed up & they have no defense, & lost to the Jets.. But guess what the Steelers are in the 5th playoff spot & a half a game from in the top spot in the AFCN. The Steelers control their own destiny right now & in a better position then 22 other teams.. hahahaha haters gonna hate..

    ——————————————————————

Yup, I would love to watch two teams play some super sloppy football in a snowstorm. Nobody could hang on to the ball, the passing game(s) would be useless, and bodies would slip and slide everywhere. That’s exactly the quality of football the NFL wants for the Super Bowl when 200 million+ people watch it worldwide.

    About one slot too high.
    ——————-
At this point, we just want to be dead last and drafting first.

  24. 5. Philadelphia Eagles (No. 5; 8-3): With Cowboys, Seahawks, Cowboys on the immediate horizon, we’ll know plenty about this team soon.
    ========================================

You didn’t learn enough when Green Bay blew them out? They’re 1-3 against winning teams and you still have them at #5?

    ——————————

The Eagles would have beat the Cardinals if not for a 80 yard pass with 1:30 left in the game. They still almost won last second, if Jordan Matthews got his feet down inbounds.

And the 49ers beat the Eagles by 5. The Eagles looked horrible that day, but if not for a 55 yard pass to Gore beating a LB, the Eagles would have won.

Dont act like 1 game a season makes. The Cowboys have beaten 1 game with a winning record as well. I dont see you complaining about their ranking.

  25. Based on tie breakers the Ravens are actually in 2nd place ahead of the Steelers. But yanno… 4 spots lower on these Power Rankings and actually moved up a spot on a bye week just because…

  26. As usual the rankings are based on reputation and not what is happening on the field now.

Philly has been beaten by the Niners and Cards, gave up 50 points two weeks ago and somehow are in the top 5. Dallas got beat by the Redskins a few weeks ago, barely survive the Giants and are 4th overall. Oakland has played SD, Seattle and KC tough in their past 3 games beating KC, and are 31st.

Forget the record and look at how teams are actually playing now Florio. Your ratings don’t make any sense when looking at the teams and their play right now.

  27. That might be the highest the Bears are ranked for the rest of the season. Just because they won their last two games – against the not-quite-there-yet Vikings and the horrible Bucs – doesn’t mean they’ve gotten any better. Starting Thursday the level of competition picks back up for them, considerably.

  28. How is the disfunction that is my Redskins behind the Titans that they beat, and have a one game better record than? As the great Jim Rome would say PAAAAAAAAA-THETT-IC! Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

  29. Again, this is the Power Standings, not the Power Rankings. Does anyone really believe that Arizona is still third after that blowout loss, and losing Palmer?

  30. The whole AFC North is overrated. Just look at the rankings of the teams on their schedule. Only the Colt’s and Pats are in the top ten. After that, N.O. at 21, with the remainder below.

No they don’t make the schedule, but that’s why the records are all over 500. That said they will be facing some stronger opponents in the next few weeks, and we’ll see how that shakes out.

  31. it’s laughable at this point:

beat #4 in their building 28-17 forcing 6 turnovers
    beat #5 forcing 4 turnovers
    beat #13
2nd ranked defense in the league…

But ranking San Francisco #14 makes perfect sense. What will be the justification next week after a victory over Seattle?

    14. San Francisco 8-4 – because I said so…

  32. Steelers are not tied for 2nd. Right now, they are 3rd. And, Forsett comeback player of the year? Comeback to what? He was never a good player to come back to.

  33. tampa bay has the NFL right where they want them!

The bucs will sneak into the play-offs as division winners at 5-11 and then roll all the way to the SB losing to the Patriots 70-6 as they realize they are the Bucs and suck forcing Roger Goodell to ban any team he feels like from the play-offs in order to “Protect The Shield”

  34. Pack should have beat the Vikes by more than a measly 3 points. It felt like we were losing the entire time.

Packers at #2 is jumping the gun. Give me a little – no, a LOT more consistency and maybe I’ll feel like we’re worthy of anything close to that spot.

  35. Eutaw’s Finest… The Ravens are 2-3 in the division & all 4 loses to AFC teams, the Steelers are 2-2 in the div & has 3 loses againts AFC teams, at this point the Steelers beat all the tie breakers in a wild card senerio.. Yes the team people are sleeping on..

  36. I’m an Eagles diehard but they will lose on Turkey Day. The world will declare Jerry Jones and Romo superhuman and turkey legs to Demarco Murray and Dez Bryant will tell us how amazing he is. Then Philly will beat Seattle/Dallas at home and coast to the division anyway. Dallas will draw Seattle in the wildcard round and take their beating. So enjoy this Thursday – because then reality sets in.

  37. Keep sleeping on the Steelers. They had a late bye & made it banged up. 6-3 against the AFC. No other team in the Div beat the whole AFCS. Steelers beat the Bengals, which they are 4-2 against the last 3 years & the Steelers win this division. Some injured vets & young players coming back for this playoff run. Steelers are looking good through the hate..

  38. I only read these every week to see people lose their freakin’ minds because not enough respect is given to their favorite football team.

    ——————–
Fair enough, I was just playing anyway, you’re easily better than the Jags.

    Great victory over the Chiefs.

  40. Remind me, what’s the Browns record against the Steelers this year? A blow out still only counts as 1 win and that was the third in 15 years?

Washed up defense? Before 5 starters went out they only had 2 starters over 30, Harrison and Keisel are playing very well to boot. The secondary is an issue tho. No Steel Curtain but they have shown they can put games together and make lay lights out.

Loss to the Jets and barely beating the Titans, both teams have good defensive fronts and traditionally give the Steelers a hard game. When the game only means to play spoiler for a team going for a playoff spot means you have nothing to lose.

They are a bit too high but they are 6-3 against the AFC, 2-2 in the division and only the Bengals have a better division record, 2-1. No problem with them being ranked higher then the Ravens, 2-3 division, 3-4 AFC and the Browns 2-2 division, 4-4 AFC.

  41. The Packers secondary matches up very well with the Pats receivers and Gronk. I think the winner of that game will be the one is able to stop the run, and the score will be a lot lower than people think.

    Pack 24, Pats 20

  42. If Revis can put the kibosh on that Rogers to Nelson timing play, we will have a game indeed.

I can just see a rash of injuries coming out of this game.

  43. The Cleveland Browns should have beat Baltimore, completely destroyed the Pittsburgh Steelers in a game and a half, completely destroyed the
Cincinnati Bengals WITHOUT three Pro-Bowlers that weren’t playing in both of those games.
    EXPLAIN THAT!!!

Who makes up these Power Rankings???

  44. @ruvelligwebuike

lol its funny every team thinks they have a single player that can handle gronk if u dont double or triple team or sheap shot him u are toast….play man vs brady and u are toast….so please do it

  45. Never understood why people get all bent out of shape about these dumb power rankings on all these different websites. They don’t mean squat!!

  46. Steelers are the only AFCN team that gets to 11 wins and takes the division. Winner of the Ravens/Dolphins gets a wildcard w/KC.

Pats have beaten the other 3 teams in the NFCN by a combined score of 115-39. 14 straight wins against that division. Pats have also beaten the 3 division leaders in the AFC by a combined score of 126-60. The Pats lost 2 early while Gronk was on a pitch count and they were trying to figure out the OLine, but this team is a wrecking crew, despite losing Mayo and CJones. I said before the Colts game I didn’t get why they were dogs. They killed the Colts. Watch what happens Sunday.

  47. 17. San Diego Chargers (No. 16; 7-4): The win over the Rams felt — and looked — like a loss.

Yeah when one team out gains the other 400yds-200yds , and the same team seals a win at the end with a great play, its customary to view that as a loss…in biased media circles like this one. To the fan of the Chargers it was a screaming, up and down, first pumping win, to the Ram fan it was a soul crushing loss. Next time save the losing mumbo jumbo for the team that lost and threw a last second interception and give credit to the team that won it at the end with a great play. That’s customary in THIS country, thank you very much.

  48. 25. New York Giants (No. 25; 3-8): “We’re still the best team in New York!”

    *New Jersey

    Buffalololol would beg to differ

  49. Getting a little revved up Ted?

They are looking fantastic. The game being in Lambeau could make it close, that’s a tough place to go into and win.

  50. Dawgzzxx, what’s the Browns record against the Steelers this year? What’s the record against above .500 teams? The answers are 1-1 and 2-2. Enjoy the last place schedule, the Browns are back to normal next year.

Bless us for we have rings. We can’t help that we are better than you are. We apologize and also laugh at you. The March continues.

All Steeler superbowls before free agency have an asterisk and don’t count. Remember, if something was legal, and then becomes illegal, it invalidates all previous superbowls.

As a patriots fan I have been told this ad nauseum.

Also 4 of those super bowls happened 40 years ago? Does that really count as a march when you take a 40 year break?

  52. thetruthcampaign says:

My Lions have the record, but not the power to be at 12 right now. I think every 7-4 team who’s scored a TD in the last 2 weeks should be higher than the Lions. ———————————————————————————————————————– i agree the lions have looked bad the last couple of weeks. if they can’t bounce back against the bears well then its the same old lions….

  53. @dawgzzxx

    Cleveland should have beat Baltimore???

One never tires of the fantasies of Brownstain Nation.

There is no “should have.” There are wins and losses.

Cleveland’s RB coach, Montgomery, explained the mindset of the Ravens toward defeating the Browns. You basically just bide your time, keep the game close, & wait for the inevitable Brown mistake. Then you make them pay for it.

  54. Ridley Me This, spygate wasn’t a retroactive caught cheating, it was always cheating then they finally got caught.

Steroids we not illegal at the time in question and you would have to be an idiot if you think they were the only ones doing it. In the past 15 seasons the Pats have 3 championships to the Steelers 2, so the Pats run isn’t that much greater.

  55. All Steeler superbowls before free agency have an asterisk and don’t count. Remember, if something was legal, and then becomes illegal, it invalidates all previous superbowls.

As a patriots fan I have been told this ad nauseum.
    ————–

If what the Patriots did was legal, care to explain the forfeited 1st round pick, the $250,000 team fine and the $500,000 fine on the head coach?

Where do you people get the ludicrous idea that what you did was legal?

Seriously, what planet do you get your NFL news from?

  56. I expected my Lions to be around #20 given that they havent scored a TD in 8 quarters. Watching that lions offense go against the Bears defense should be interesting… which is more dysfunctional?

  57. 17. San Diego Chargers (No. 16; 7-4): The win over the Rams felt — and looked — like a loss.

Really?? What happened?? Did you changed the channel right at the game winning INT??

Because if that does not seal a win for you, then i don’t think you understand football that much.

  58. Makes me cringe to see comments of such certainly the Pack will beat the Pats and beyond.

I love the Packers enough to make you other guys wanna roll your eyes back into your heads and keep them there. However, that doesn’t mean I’ve suddenly forgotten about all the times winning streaks made me believe in them – just to watch them completely forget how to play football the following Sunday. I’m just tired of never knowing which team will show up. They’d be so damn good if they frickin STAYED good.

  59. @patriotsarespygaters-

Not saying they will try to lock up one guy with Gronk. I’m saying they will probably try to bracket him with two guys and mix up man and zone concepts, and they have the personnel to make that happen. The Packers secondary is slept on by the casual football fan…Casey Hayward and Devon House would start on 90% of the teams in the NFL and they are our nickel and dime guys. Actually, not even since Hyde technically starts as the nickel guy.

My only concern is that Dom usually finds a way to screw it up when the Pack plays an elite quarterback.

  60. “Here we go Steelers, here we go! Look at our trophy case and then look at yours!”

The Browns and Lions won a combined 7 Championships between 1950 to 1964. No one gives a crap about that either.
