Shaun Phillps lands with Colts

Linebacker Shaun Phillips has taken an overnight elevator ride from the basement to the penthouse in the AFC South.

Phillips was waived by the Titans on Tuesday and he’ll spend Thanksgiving as a member of the Colts, who announced that they added Phillips via a waiver claim on Wednesday. The move for Phillips, who has 81.5 career sacks, is a signal that the Colts would like to boost their pass rush off the edge.

The Colts currently rank 11th in the NFL with 27 sacks, seven of which have come from outside linebackers Bjoern Werner and Erik Walden. They hoped to have Robert Mathis for the final 12 regular season games, but he tore his Achilles while working out ahead of his reinstatement from a season-opening four-game suspension.

Phillips, who is signed through next season, had just two sacks in 11 games with the Titans, so he’s hardly been an impact player this season. Phillips did have 10 sacks last year with the Broncos, so a return to a team with postseason aspirations could be a boost to his productivity.

Linebacker Victor Butler has shuffled on and off the Colts roster a few times recently and he shuffled back off with Phillips’s arrival.

  1. Poor Victor Butler. They cannot even fit him on the roster even though the cornerback spot opposite of Davis is not even that good?

Well, for those who picked Indianapolis to go to Super Bowl, Phillips’ arrival May have improved indy’s title chances.

  2. How would you celebrate if you got released from the Titans? Then in the middle of the celebration the Colts pick you up. YEAH!!

  3. According to pff and other sites, he’s been one of the least effective pass rushers this year. Last year he had very few pressures despite the sack numbers. Too many people seem to think he’s the old Shaun Phillips, don’t expect much colts fans. He’s washed up, no way around it.

Really??? Uh Greg Toler is one of the most underrated corners in the league. Per sports illustrated.

For someone that goes through the trouble of setting up a user profile dedicated to insulting one player we shouldn’t be surprised that you’d bag on another one. Shaun played well for Denver, as he has his whole career. Grab another bag of cheetos man. He was released from Denver because of depth/salary so like I said, grab another bag of cheetos until you do half the work in your life that this man has done every year.

  6. Shaun may be a situational player coming off the bench now, but he is still a force. He did all that was asked of him in Denver and was a good teammate.

Denver fell way short of linebackers this week due to injuries. When I saw Phillips had been waived I assumed Fox and Elway would jump on the opportunity to bring him back for a playoff run. Oh well, Kudos to the Colts on a fine late season pickup.

Phillips plays biggest in big games. I just wish it had been in Denver.

  7. Titans let him go because they are going nowhere, and they want to see what they have in the younger guys and what they will need to do in the draft (which is understandable).

He’s a very good football player. Colts did well.

  8. Watching him leave my Chargers to go to the Broncos was such a sickening display of disrespect to his FORMER fans in San Diego.

I’m cool with him as a Colt. The Colts are a respectable team who don’t cheat the cap, like the Broncos do.

Plus, we always beat the Colts, so there’s that too…

Wish I could say “Good luck” to Philips, but to be honest, I’m somewhere between I-don’t-give-a-crap and I-hope-you-break-your-leg.

    1) There is no cap in Denver. Just look at their two* Super Bowl* victories* in the 1990’s*.

    2) 43-8 lololololol
