Henderson says Troy Vincent must testify

AP

Troy Vincent wasn’t on the witness list for Tuesday’s hearing in the Adrian Peterson appeal.  Vincent is now.

Per a league source, Harold Henderson has ruled that Vincent must testify in the case.

The ruling comes after the NFL Players Association submitted on Peterson’s behalf a transcript and audiotape of conversations between Peterson and Vincent, during which Vincent allegedly said that Peterson would get credit for “time served” while suspended with pay, and that the new domestic violence policy would not apply retroactively.

Vincent could testify as soon as Thursday.  Don’t be shocked if the case settles before then.  According to the source, Henderson has encouraged the parties to try to resolve the case.  For the league office, a settlement will be the only way to keep Vincent from having to testify.

  1. He’s missed 12 games for spanking his child to hard. If he does it again suspend him. But the guy deserves a second chance and not being allowed to play for 12 games, pay or no pay is already to hard of a punishment for a reckless endangerment no contest plea.

  2. Quick ! Don’t let the rabbit out of the hat !!!

The league attorneys better make this go away before it gets even more embarrassing for the NFL.

  3. This starts at the top, Goodell bungles the Rice case, now Vincent tells Peterson he’ll get time served, when does Goodell get suspended indefinitely ?? Better yet, put the dummy Goodell on the permanent exempt list.

  4. How about Roger Goodell is fired, fans across the board have no faith in his horrific judgment! AP has served an 11 game suspension, fine him 6 game checks and give the money to charity! I’m by no means condoning corporal punishment, but until the south becomes a little more progressive and changes its laws, AP only committed a misdemeanor and shouldn’t be treated like a felon!

  5. Fidel Goodell should lose his job now….This clown is running the NFL like the mafia……

This is a one pony show and he needs to go!

  6. Was Troy Vincent at the scene when Peterson whipped a 4 year old boy till he bleed? We already know he wasn’t there so what’s the point, Peterson is a known child abuser and the NFL is well within its rights to expect that players do not whip 4 year old boys. Case closed.

  7. Goodell and his band of idiots probably didn’t know that Texas was one way state when it comes to recordings. We’ll see if they cave knowing they have been caught in a lie or if Troy Vincent will be willing to lie under oath. The walls are closing in on Goodell.

  8. The settlement should be godell gets to serve the remaining amount of Adrian’s suspension and All Day gets to play football. Done and done!

    Free AP!!!

    Let the man PLAY!!!!!!

  9. Henderson probably is on the NFLPA payroll, or gets kickbacks from a player or something.

I wish that a court would side with an employer, just ONCE. I’m so tired of the tail wagging the dog.

  10. “Henderson probably is on the NFLPA payroll.”

So close to correct. Just drop the “PA” and you actually got it right.

  11. “The ruling comes after the NFL Players Association submitted on Peterson’s behalf………………………”
    =============================

In other words, Peterson wasn’t even there (again)???

How can ANYONE believe Peterson wants to play football when he seemingly cannot be bothered to show up at a hearing determining his 2014 fate?

Suspend this piece of trash INDEFINITELY for having zero common sense!

  12. Per prior pft article:

The NFL Players Association says that an NFL executive told Adrian Peterson that he would get credit for “time served” during his time on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, meaning he wouldn’t be suspended beyond that time after he accepted a plea deal on a charge of injuring his son. The NFL says that’s simply false.

NFL Executive Vice President Jeff Pash said on Mike & Mike that no NFL executive gave Peterson any such promise.

“I’m quite confident that no one told him that,” Pash said.

    ——–++++——-
    Sigh…..
    More lies from the NFL.

  13. I don’t support hitting your child, and I am not trying to defend AP here, but the NFL can’t create a rule like this and apply it retroactively.

To me that is the issue and why Roger Dodger is such a fool.

Actually Henderson is currently on the NFL’s payroll with compensation reported in the millions.

  15. These jokers really want to drag this stuff out don’t they? How can you not set a time where everyone involved is going to be there and get the show on the road???

  16. IF DAN SNYDER REALLY LOVES THE REDSKINS THEN SELL THE TEAM. WE HATE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, SINCERELY.

  17. With this suspension can he pass Emmitt Smith still?

He has roughly 9000 yards to go, 16 games in a season, already 29. I think the window may have closed for A.P. to have the title. He max plays for another 2-3 years.

I think he has paid his dues enough, before loosing this title.

  18. Henderson on the NFLPA payroll? You must be joking, it is well known he is paid by the NFL and rarely rules against them. He told them to settle due to the fact he will be forced to rule for Peterson with this evidence.

  19. Maybe if Beaterson plays this season the hapless Vikings will finish a distant 3rd rather than last?

  20. Maybe its time for Roger Goodell to give back some of the $40 Million he earns every year to run the NFL like a dictatorship! Can you believe he gets paid $40 Million a year, what a joke!! It honestly makes me embarrassed to spend any money on the NFL period!!

  21. Roger Goodell is a great commissioner of the NFL. Don’t blame this wonderful man because two criminals can’t control themselves. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. These horrific actions are on Rice and Peterson, not Goodell. Hold criminals accountable if you want to reduce crime. Adrian Peterson is an animal that should be locked in a cage along with Jerry Sandusky. There’s at least hope for Ray rice. He probably had a dad like Adrian Peterson.

  22. If he said he gets “time served” then, just as in the Rice case, AP will win and the NFL Front Office should just save everyone more embarrassment and reinstate/settle this ASAP. Not condoning nor condemning AP’s conduct; just dealing with the facts/case as presently before us. Time to get this moving forward and see what the future holds for all.

  23. Just because Vincent says something doesn’t make it the rule to go by. In general, management should not be held to the lowest standard uttered by one of its team if it is wrong.

If on the other hand, Peterson relied to his detriment on the utterance and the Vincent is in a position of apparent authority then the NFL should simply honor his incorrect statement.

The key is the “reliance to his detriment”. Not merely being disappointed that the outcome was different than what he was expecting.

  24. One thing that i haven’t seen yet is if Vincent even has the authority in regards to letting ANY player know what will or will not happen as it relates to punishment. I thought Goodell has the final say in that??

Seems to me more like the company janitor saying something along the lines of XX employee will get a raise then expects the company to actually do it.

  25. If you don’t get credit for time served.. Why would anyone volunteer to serve time on the commissioners exempt list? It only benefits the league as they can delay imposing discipline on the player until his court case is resolved. But, in what rational environment would a person volunteer to go on said list? Let’s use common sense and realize the league is full of it.

  26. Reliance to his detriment could include settling the case rather than attempting to win it in court.
Not saying that he would have won in court, but rather that he relied on Vincent’s statement, and thus gave up his chance to win in court.
At least, that’s what I’d be arguing if I were him..

And that is the point exactly. The NFL had NO WAY to keep Peterson from playing while his situation was being sorted out via the legal process, A.P. was told if he agreed to go on the exempt list he would get credit for those games missed upon the settling of his case AND that the new rules would NOT apply to him since his infraction happened last spring. Technically, he should have ONLY had a two game suspension and played EVERY game after the Saints game. Or he could have said he is playing and should have played up until the day he plead no contest to a misdemeanor. THEN the two game suspension should have been instituted. He is being punished twice by the NFL and also retroactively.

  28. I don’t see any way that Goodell comes out of this looking good.

If the NFL settles and reduces Peterson’s suspension, public perception will be that he once again abused his power.

If he doesn’t, Vincent will have to testify and fall on his own sword and say that he did tell AP that he would get time served, but that he had no authority from Goodell to make such a promise.

I may be wrong, but given that Goodell was basically called a liar by Judge Jones, who is now going to believe that this was all Vincent’s fault?

  29. It’s still an effort in futility. The NFL only has about a month to milk the pseudo-suspension out… All the damage has been done with each and every person involved in this looking like complete idiots.

I was one that always thought the position of ANY commissioner should be a neutral party to be a voice of reason for their league…. And Goodell is failing miserably.

  30. Not wanting to give time served could be why in the agreement that AP signed it said that the punishment would not be handled until after the case was concluded.

In that, technically speaking it isn’t retroactive, as the new policy came before the actual reviewing of the case.

That being stated, it will probably come down to the following. 1. How accurate is the transcript, as a transcript is a copy on paper and not an actual recording. If they have the recording they should put that in. 2. Do those statements constitute a guarantee or promise? 3. Did Vincent have the authority to make the alleged statements? 4. Does the arbiter believe that the policy was applied retroactively?

I think that he let say the policy was properly applied.

I have no clue about the other 3.

  31. Bigjdve has hit the salient points but there is one other point that might make a difference: did Peterson rely to his detriment on Vincent’s promise? If he didn’t, I’m not sure that promise will carry the day for Peterson.

If I understand the arguments correctly, Vincent allegedly told Peterson that if he attended a meeting on Nov. 14, he might (would?) get a penalty of time-served. Peterson did not rely on this promise and, instead, refused to attend the meeting. We shall see.

An interesting question is whether the NFL brass (Goodell?) used Vincent as an intermediary because they thought that Peterson would be more likely to trust a former player. That would look sort of sneaky. It might also mean that Vincent had the authority to make the promise that Peterson claims that he made.

  32. Not wanting to give time served could be why in the agreement that AP signed it said that the punishment would not be handled until after the case was concluded.

You have this backwards. Peterson signed the agreement specifically BECAUSE he would get time served. The act came before the new policy. If anything, they should fine Peterson 6 game checks, and reinstate him immediately. The damage has already been done to him, his team, and the fans. the season is over. AP should have been playing against the Bears and Packers. If he does, it is likely the Vikings win both of those games and are sitting at 7-5 with a glimmer of playoff hope. That is now gone, what is the point for Goodell to keep this up? The Starcaps deal was stupid too. Here you had two guys who took a supplement to lose weight which illegally did NOT list all of its ingredients. The one banned ingredient masks steroid use. They submitted to other tests which showed neither of them were taking steroids, but Goodell just kept pushing. Why?

  33. It’s the constant lies and not following the CBA that is getting the NFL in trouble here. Two months ago the votes were 50/50 on what should happen to AP and Rice. Now, about 98% of people here feel the NFL has wronged both players.

It’s impossible for the NFL to save face here. If the arbitrator is telling you to settle, that is absolutely not a good thing. He is clearly already siding for AP on this case.

  34. There’s an easy way to settle this. The standard punishment now is a six-game suspension without pay. He’s had the suspension (more than six games), now he needs to lose the pay.

The settlement is: NFL reinstates Peterson immediately, and he gets paid last week as well. Peterson agrees to donate his entire salary for the balance of the season to No More. Problem solved.

Why the parties didn’t do this last week or earlier I have absolutely no idea.

  35. Finally getting some semblance of competence from the NFL. And, its plainly evident that AD has shown remorse and taken responsibility for his actions.

  36. Really? I could have told u that. He should have been there today. I’m sure he can be at two different places in a day. Dc and NYC are not that far away.
More feet dragging by the NFL. Just admit u have completely screwed this thing up and hurt many, many fans and innocent players in the process
