Bevell could be a candidate at Wisconsin

With the Wisconsin head-coaching gig finally open, here’s a name to watch as the Badgers start the process of replacing him: Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.

Folks with a finger on the pulse of such issues have flagged Bevell as a viable candidate. And for good reason; Bevell played quarterback at Wisconsin in the 1990s. His coach at the time was the guy who’ll hire the next coach, A.D. Barry Alvarez.

Bevell has served as the offensive coordinator in Seattle since 2011. Before that, Bevell worked as offensive coordinator with the Vikings. Before that, Bevell was an assistant with the Packers.

Bevell has gotten consideration for NFL head-coaching jobs, but no one has been sufficiently interested to refrain from hiring a coach until Bevell’s season with the Seahawks has ended. With Seattle poised for what appears to be another run deep into the postseason, his best chance to get a head coaching job could be to jump to college football.

  1. I think Bevell is a decent candidate but the front runner seems to be Paul Chryst who was the offensive coordinator the year the Badgers had Wilson at QB

  2. Why do these college teams think they can poach succesful nfl coaches????

Why would a nfl coach demote his self to ncaa?

  3. “might”? What kind of reporting is this? My grandma might be a candidate too (but probably not).

Because success as a HEAD coach in the NCAA will:

    A. get you even more noticed
    B. prove you can do it as THE man
    C. Allow you to not have to wait for your season (playoffs) to be over to take a different job.

  5. He should return the favor to Brad Childress and give him the OC gig. Then they can recreate that prolific Viking offense of the mid-2000s featuring Tavaris Jackson, Marcus Robinson, Troy Williamson, Travis Taylor, Bernard Berian, Jermaine Wiggins. That was an offense. I like seeing field goals sail through the uprights.

Except bevelle usually has a slate of head coaching interviews for other NFL teams.

  7. Money being somewhat equal, college HC is a better job than NFL HC.

100 player rosters. If you lose your starting QB, your season isn’t over (Ask Ohio St). Total control over the program. Better fringe benefits. Free tuition for your kids.

Chryst is 19-19 at Pitt. Bevell or Scott Frost would be better options.

Chryst would have better talent at Wisco.

When he was at Wisco – the QB situation was NEVER as bad as it’s been since he left.

WI will always have decent lines and RB’s – in 2005 under Chryst as OC the Badgers averaged 34.3 ppg and scored 446 points. Same offense then went 12-1 in 2006.

Look at his work in Oregon too – 2003 he had a 4,000-yard passer, 1,500-yard rusher and two 1,000-yard receivers.

Dude can flat out coach college ball with talent, talent he doesn’t have at Pitt.

I’ll take that over Bevell who currently has the 29th rated passing offense in the NFL.

  9. Live in Madison and love the Badgers….. I can’t figure this one out. WI has to be a top 15-20 job in the country. Is ORE ST in the Top 50?

Maybe my rose colored glasses have blinded me from reality. Let’s see what Barry can do now. Good luck to Coach Andersen. Class act coach.

  10. Bevell will get a head coaching gig in the NFL within a year or two. If not, he can stay with the Seahawks and take over when Pete Carroll retires. If he goes to the NCAA ranks he may never get back into the NFL. He will need to develop a top program before he sees another NFL offer just like Carroll.

  11. Seahawks fan here, can someone please take him off our hands. His ability to adapt to a game is terrible. He’s still calling way too many passing plays with leads in the 4th quarter. I’ve wanted another squad to pick him up for a few years now and I hope he gets an offer somewhere soon.

  12. I must agree that Bevell will be moving on at some time and It might be this year.

There will be at least 5 NFL openings, maybe more. Here’s my list of potential openings.

Jets, Raiders, Panthers, Bears, Giants, 49ers, Redskins.

I could see him taking the Wisconsin job, but something inside says he wants an NFL job.

  13. Seahawk fans everywhere would rejoice! Please please please happen! The highest level of football that I played was high school and even I know exactly what play is coming almost every down. His play calling is down right atrocious.

  14. You know as much as Seattle fans like to complain about this guy, I just checked and they’ve had a top 10 offense every year since 2012 including setting a franchise record for rushing yards that they’re going to easily break again this year. Coupled with the fact that he’s an annual hot candidate for NFL head coaching jobs I doubt he’d go to college. I mean he could always get a college job even if he flops as a pro coach if he wanted to, just look at Jim Mora at UCLA or Pete Carroll after New England or Mike Riley after he got fired from the Chargers and became Oregon State’s coach.

I’m in GB. This one is puzzling. And I’ll bet you a six pack Barry is steaming mad. As for your “class act” comment, sure he’s a good guy and all but to pull this slick move at this time is classless. I hope he falls on his face in Oregon and gets fired. This is almost as classless as Benedict Arnold Bielemas move.

  16. Unless he was the one who said to draft Wilson and wait to the 3rd to do it this guy sucks and his offense was horrible before Wilson fell into his lap.

Their offensive playcalling is horrible and he “had a hard time utilizing Percy Harvin”, give me a break that’s some of the sorriest BS I’ve ever heard.

Maybe the clown should have realized that before they traded for him or let multiple veterans leave in FA because of his huge cap hit, just to get rid of him anyways right after.

Except interviews don’t mean squat if they’re just kicking tires. Bruce Arians had plenty of head of coaching interviews. How long did it take him to get an actual NFL HC? He didn’t get noticed he was an interim HC. How many HC interviews did Chip Kelly do before he got a NFL HC job? Not very many since he was very successful as a college HC.

  18. Andersen is a step below Chizik as far as a class move. Dollars to donuts he had it worked out before the Big 10 Championship game.

Bevell will be in the NFL

    Chryst won’t leave Pitt

Barry will make sure the next is a 5 year guy. Bet he’s tired of being asked to coach bowl games.

Rhoades? MCCarney? Pellini is floating around out there still. Let’s be honest.. the Badgers do well when Ohio State is on sanctions and Michigan is rebuilding.

  19. Geez, the guy was the OC to one of the most dominating SB wins and even my fellow Hawks fans want him gone. Careful what you wish for, did you guys already forget about the Greg Knapp year? I don’t think Bev is ready to run the show but he hasn’t done too shabby at winning games with a 3rd round pick who is 5’11”

  20. Hes really overrated, couldn’t do anything in minnesota. Leaves there and gets lucky to have a top tier defense, great running back and good qb. Maybe successful as a college head coach, so that may work out. I don’t see it working for him in the nfl at HC

  21. The Badgers can probably do better than Bevell, a coach that doesn’t have much college coaching experience, which is quite a bit different than the NFL.

  22. No Thank you Wisconsin. Hello San Francisco after Harbaugh is traded. He’ll make Kaepernick down right scary to play against and have the insider knowledge of the Seattle Defense.

  23. Just happy Anderson is gone. That team should have been unbeaten going into the Big Ten championship game – any decent coach would’ve won those games vs LSU (ahead 24-7 and then he called a lot of pass plays) and Northwestern (1st and goal with a great OL and Melvin Gordon and he called a pass on 1st down which was picked off).
Then they come in totally unprepared to play in the Big Ten championship game. Bye bye.

  24. Bevelle’s bailing out of that sinking ship. He knows that the letter D stands for Delusional Doofus fans that don’t know One Superbowl win in franchise history does not a Dynasty make. In Seattle the letter D stands for Downward spiral, as in where they’re heading next year.

  25. I understand he helped Seattle win a Super Bowl but Bevell’s play calling leaves much to be desired. Every legit Seahawk fan knows that the run game is Tom Cables. Every here and then Bevell has a great design that hits and its a thing of beauty. But so many games his style of play calling is what I call “throwing darts” and I watch this team run when they should pass, pass when they should run and there is no flow.

Maybe its Pete and John’s fault for not drafting any decent o-line talent in the last two years. I think this passing offensive still has far more potential then just Russell Wilson improvising.

  26. I’m wondering if Barry Alvarez is a tougher boss to work for than appears on the surface.

He could be a major back seat driver — his taking over coaching the Rose Bowl two years ago after Brett Bielma left, and now, maybe, the Outback Bowl, suggests he’s still got it in his system.

That could be a factor in both departures.

  27. Why is the NCAA deemed a demotion?

Its a different style of job. Working with kids, not rich men. Recruiting, the banquet circuit. College HC is essentially the GM, the guy picking the talent. The game on the field is different. We all say “so and so’s style of coaching wont work in the NFL” and vice versa.

It can’t be a promotion or a demotion if its a different job that attracts different types of people.

Then look at the salaries of Richt at GA, Stoops at OK, and other coaches considered to be great but not the cream of the crop. They are making some cash.
What will Harbaugh will be offered to go to Michigan? It won’t be taken out of petty cash.

  28. Assuming Idzik is given another lease on life as Jets GM, you would have to think Bevell is top 3 candidate for Jets HC…

Only question is whether Bevell is willing to take a job where he will be very tied to the GM and the GM might only have a shelf life of 2 years…
