No fines for Reggie Bush, Davin Joseph

AP

Last Sunday, multiple players displayed the “I can’t breathe” message, a reference to the death of Eric Garner during an altercation with police.  The NFL has fined none of them.

For Lions running back Reggie Bush, the message was displayed on a T-shirt that he wore in pregame warmups.  For Rams guard Davin Joseph, the message was written onto Joseph’s shoes.

The NFL usually does not impose fines for uniform violations occurring during individual pregame warmups, when for example Beats headphones can be worn without the logos concealed, despite the NFL’s exclusive deal with Bose.  It gets a little dicier when messages are written onto equipment during games.

The general rule is don’t do it.  But the NFL and its teams exercise discretion when deciding who will and won’t be fined.

For example, former Texans cornerback Dunta Robinson received a $25,000 fine in 2009 from the team for writing “Pay me Rick” onto his shoes, a message to team G.M. Rick Smith.

In this specific situation, the NFL wisely opted to allow the players to express themselves in a way that didn’t infringe on any of the league’s endorsement deals and that contained no inappropriate terms or concepts.

  1. “Wisely?” They violated uniform rules, fine them. What good is a rule if you don’t enforce it?!

  2. cue angry right wingers….

    ————————

Angry right wingers are this decade’s answer to the angry left wingers of the 00’s.

  3. Well regardless of your political preferences, for about the first time in well over a year, the league has made an intelligent decision. The league has time and time again proven that “consistency” has NOTHING to do with they way the boobs in NY enforce the so called rules.

  4. and yet tamba hali one of the cleanest players in the game, is fined for a hit that the announcers questioned as flag worthy. and he got fined for it. when the only other option would have been to just avoid the qb all together. how silly.

ridiculous how they decide who gets fined. Von Miller had a nasty late hit a couple weeks ago with no fine. makes no sense.

  5. Did anyone notice he was being choked for about 8 seconds… but was complaining for the next 11 seconds that he couldn’t breath?

This man most likely died from health complications and laying on his belly while being aggressively arrested by the police (which is usually what happens if you don’t listen to them and start swatting your hands at them after they tried talking to you peacefully for 14 minutes) …

The chokehold is being blamed, but it appeared that was a very small part of the issue. This type of arrest happens 100’s of times per day when people choose to argue with cops and swat them away etc… This guy has been arrested over 30 times before. All he kept saying was “I didn’t do anything…” without answering any of their questions. What are the cops supposed to do, just walk away because he kept saying “I didn’t do anything”? If thats the case, absolutely no crime would go punished because everyone says that.

You can see hundreds of videos where cops take someone down aggressively like that. There is no way anyone would reasonably believe that it would result in a death.

Heck, if they tazed him, he might have passed away from that as well and people would complain about that too.

They tried being “cool” with him. They were peacefully talking to him for 14 minutes before the actual take down and he did not answer any of their questions or cooperate at all. What were they supposed to do, call in a tactical negotiation squad to come in and arrest him??

I feel bad that he passed away, but I also feel bad for cops who put their lives on the line every day to protect ours… We live in a society that celebrates common criminals who rob stores, do drugs, and get arrested 30 times while vilifying an entire police force where 97% of them are good people who don’t get paid nearly enough to deal with the kind of garbage they are put through.

This is the liberal agenda… Blame a minor exception that causes less than 1% of young black deaths, while ignoring the black on black violence which causes the other 99%.

  6. @truthfactory

Except the autopsys show he died from pressure to the neck. But please dont let facts get in the way of your posts.

  7. Truthfactory speaks, well, the TRUTH. We are a society of laws. How about obeying the law. Problem solved.

  8. Police have been out of control in this country for years now. Tasering old ladies and little girls, murdering over and over at will.

Just because you don’t like the people the police murdered or just because they committed some minor infraction before the police killed them does not make what the police do right.

All supporting them in their abuse does is make it much more likely that when you’re pulled over or if you happen to be questioned by them about something, that you will suffer abuse yourself.

  9. What do you expect from a league that said nothing when Roddy White advocated killing white people after the Trayvon Martin verdict.

  10. Your comments are not going to make Black and/or White or Conservative and/or Liberal people see the light and resolve the longstanding racial/political issues in the country.

Lol! The autopsy actually showed there was little to no damage on his windpipe or trachea!!! Look it up!

Now go back to that protest line where facts and statistics are few and far between… (And thank YOU for proving my point).

  12. The man could have been taken down by 5 cops without crushing his windpipe. There would be less of an uproar if he was a violent criminal, but selling loose cigarettes should never cost a man his life. There was a better way.

  13. To truthfactory: The City Coroner, you remember him don’t you? He’s the guy with the medical degree who’s job it is to determine cause of death…

Well he says that it was in fact the choke that killed this man.

The police, you remember them don’t you? That pesky organization that employed the cop that used the choke hold…

Well years prior to thus incident, they outlawed the chokehold practice, because it was killing people.

If you’re gonna have the name “truthfactory” you should try using the truth, or the facts, or (heck) maybe even both.

  14. Funny the bootlickers here are the same ones so proud of America’s penchant for fighting “tyranny”. You know, England taking tax $ without fairly representing colonists’ views in Parliament. Dumping tea into a harbor & fighting oppression until gaining freedom. These are the same cowards who won’t fight anything unless their 2 week “compliance” awards (pay checks) stop coming in, no surprise.

  15. On a related note, history will not look back kindly on Michael Jordan. Greatest basketball player of all-time, rich beyond belief…social issues Eunuch.
All that power and kept it to himself.

  16. Ah yes, lets reward/ condone resisting arrest. Now if you consider a society that’s trying to criminalizes almost everything it might be a different story. But who in our society wants big govt? Who wants to control you in every aspect of your behavior? Just a thought.

  17. I keep seeing this “let’s condone resisting arrest” drum being beaten while it wholly misses the many other points causing the uproar.

  18. Like anyone looks up to Reggie Bush anyways, the guy sucks. Why does he still have a job in the NFL, oh yeah it’s the Lion’s.

Only fools like Hyzers root for the crappy Lions!

  19. I am SHOCKED at some these obtuse comment’s on such an sensitive issue. As if the NFL would punish players for this and risk the backlash. Why do you watch football if you hate the players so much?

  20. All of you right wingers think that you are anti-big government conservatives but you’re completely blind to the fact that government gets no bigger than when a dozen government agents surround some poor mope doing nothing more than selling a square on the street, and then take him out. That is big government Russia style. Wake up!

  21. What is with people feeling compelled to call people derogatory terms for liberals and conservatives? Doing so only displays that the poster has lost the ability to think for him/herself.

I can immediately spot a Rush Limbaugh fan, and to those that are so easily spotted, that is not a good thing at all if you value how people perceive your intelligence.

And just because you refuse to accept that 99% of cops are good doesn’t change that, and just because you won’t admit that if he garner would have complied, same with brown, they would both still be alive also doesn’t change that either.

and for what it’s worth, I think they did use excessive force on garner.

  23. The posts I keep seeing with ” far right” etc are kinda funny to me considering that most police officers tend to vote for democrats due to their union backed jobs.

  24. Get over it everyone, if we didn’t have the police where would this country be??? Note who is wearing these t/shirts please!!!
This is getting boring, and especially the looting because they can’t buy the items in the normal way, by paying for them.

  25. Earlier this year I had respect for the Lions & Rams. After the Ferguson affair and some NFL players actions, I have a whole lot less for both teams.
