Week 15 power rankings

Getty Images

1. New England Patriots (last week No. 2; 11-3):  Tom Brady wants to play “forever,” which roughly equates to the amount of time it takes him to complete a 17-yard run.

2. Seattle Seahawks (No. 3; 10-4):  J.J. Watt may be the MVP, and Bobby Wagner may be the defensive player of the year.

3. Denver Broncos (No. 4; 11-3):  Peyton Manning throwing a block is roughly as hard to watch as Peyton Manning throwing up.

4. Arizona Cardinals (No. 5; 11-3):  As the saying goes, when you have two quarterbacks, you have none; for the Cardinals, when you have no quarterbacks, you have two.

5. Green Bay Packers (No. 1; 10-4):  Aaron Rodgers was a little too relaxed in Buffalo.

6. Dallas Cowboys (No. 7; 10-4):  They could be the No. 1 seed and they could miss the playoffs.  If DeMarco Murray misses Sunday’s game, take the under.

7. Indianapolis Colts (No. 8; 10-4):  Squarely on the second tier behind Denver and New England, the Colts won’t be viewed as a real contender until they can beat one of those two teams in the postseason.

8. Detroit Lions (No. 9; 10-4):  Everyone keeps waiting for the old Lions to show up.  Maybe they won’t.

9. Pittsburgh Steelers (No. 10; 9-5):  Good news, the final two games are at home, where they beat the Ravens and Colts.  Bad news, the final two games are at home, where they lost to the Bucs and the Saints.

10. Philadelphia Eagles (No. 6; 9-5):  Demoralized after a pair of home losses, the Eagles are still only a pair of road wins and a Cowboys stumble away from winning the division.

11. Cincinnati Bengals (No. 11; 9-4-1):  Maybe Marvin Lewis should make offensive comments about the upcoming opponent’s quarterback more often.

12. Baltimore Ravens (No. 12; 9-5):  Like 2012, they’re finding the gas pedal in December.

13. Kansas City Chiefs (No. 15; 8-6):  Great turnaround against Oakland, but it could be too late.

14. Buffalo Bills (No. 17; 8-6):  They may not make the playoffs, but that signature win over the Packers could save Doug Marrone’s job.

15. San Diego Chargers (No. 13; 8-6):  0-2 at home against the Patriots and Broncos shows that the Chargers simply can’t compete with the big boys.

16. New Orleans Saints (No. 23; 6-8):  The team that can’t win at home suddenly can’t be beaten away from it.

17. Houston Texans (No. 14; 7-7):  Maybe J.J. Watt should play quarterback; he can’t be much worse than Thad Lewis or Case Keenum.

18. St. Louis Rams (No. 16; 6-8):  Bruce Arians has shown Jeff Fisher how to properly throw shade.

19. Carolina Panthers (No. 22; 5-8-1):  When the Panthers host the Browns, the guy who was in a car wreck will be facing the guy who is in a train wreck.

20. Miami Dolphins (No. 18; 7-7):  Joe Philbin is on to Minnesota.  And folks in Miami are saying, “Don’t come back.”

21. San Francisco 49ers (No. 20; 7-7):  After having the last three seasons fall apart in the key moments of a critical postseason game, having it end in December could be a welcome relief.

22. Minnesota Vikings (No. 19; 6-8):  The team’s 2014 experience can be summarized by the experience birds will be having at the team’s new glass-walled stadium.

23. Cleveland Browns (No. 21; 7-7):  Johnny Goose Egg?

24. New York Giants (No. 25; 5-9):  It looks like Tom Coughlin may get a chance to miss the playoffs in six of seven seasons.

25. Atlanta Falcons (No. 24; 5-9):  The only good news for the Falcons is that the looming coaching vacancy could be the most attractive job in the upcoming hiring cycle.

26. Chicago Bears (No. 26; 5-9):  Thirty years after this team was on the brink of its best season ever, it feels like the Bears could be just one year away from its worst.

27. New York Jets (No. 32; 3-11):  Percy Harvin won’t take a pay cut to return.  He should want a pay raise to stay in the middle of this mess.

28. Oakland Raiders (No. 27; 2-12):  Maybe Derek Carr’s potential will balance out the general dysfunction and crappy stadium in the coaching search.

29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 28; 2-12):  There’s reason for hope in 2015.  Especially if this year’s hopelessness results in the first overall pick in the draft.

30. Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 29; 2-12):  They remain competitive.  At some point, they need to win games.

31. Washington (No. 31; 3-11):  Coach Jay Gruden actually seemed to be relieved that they lost by only 11 to the Giants.

32. Tennessee Titans (No. 30; 2-12):  The Titans have become the Jaguars without the swimming pools.

  1. It’s a tough time to be a Bears fan right now. It’s far from the worst ever though. The entire decade of the 90s was a MUCH tougher time to be a Bears fan. I can tell you that.

No argument for Bears being at #26. Not after that game last night. Whooooo… yeah… a friend of mine was at a Bears bar where they turned off the audio of the game halfway through and had a trivia contest instead.

  2. 7. Indianapolis Colts (No. 8; 10-4): …the Colts won’t be viewed as a real contender until they can beat one of those two teams in the postseason.

This can be said for any team and shows how worthless these power rankings are every week. All these are is an opportunity for Florio to get his “too cool for school” pompous jabs in.

  3. Titans are the worst team in football? … AGREED.

    – Fan since their first season in Memphis (1997)

  4. The Steelers are way to high (unsurprisingly); they are too inconsistent to be considered real candidates to make any noise in the postseason. They’re a good team, but only the 3rd best team in their division.

Save for that, I agree (surprisingly) with the rest of the rankings.

  5. I believe Marvin Lewis’s offensive comments were absolutely intentional. Hoyer destroyed the Bengals earlier in the year. Why give him a confidence boost as the playoffs loom. Meanwhile, Cleveland is waffling on a QB decision. Why not manipulate the media and give the Browns the motivation to throw the rookie into the mix…which the Browns then did. Impressive manipulation.

  6. By saying the Steelers are too inconsistent to win in the playoffs you are assuming the bad team shows up. Playing at their best the Steelers can put up enough points to beat any team in this league. Just ask the Colts and Ravens.

The Colts are 6-0 in the JV South and 4-4 outside of it. They’re simply an okay team that benefits from playing in such a horrendous division.

  8. Everyone hates on the power rankings so much, it amazes me. Don’t keep coming back to this article week over week to bitch. I’m always interested to see where my favorite team lands so I keep coming back, and I enjoy the whitty lines for each team.

  9. I think the Bills might be the Biggest surprise of this season. Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers in back to back weeks, 0 TDs thrown and 4 Ints between them. That defense is for real.

  10. This season has roundly sucked for us Giants’ fans. However, we’ll derive a small amount of pleasure watching the greatest wide receiver in football history, Mr. Odell Beckham, Jr., run wild over the birds and knock them out right along with us in week 17. Book it!

  11. “When the Cardinals win the Super Bowl will they still be # 4 in this ranking?”

    —–

To be fair, they did lose to two of the three teams ranked ahead of them. And they’re 2-2 in their last four games, with both losses being by more than 10 points. Sorry if you expect to be ahead of Seattle (which is what this is really about), but you’ll have a chance to make that happen on Sunday.

  12. I like Caldwell’s “I hope they can taste practice next week” attitude. Right guy for the job.

Also, I will grant that Schwartz has gotten his revenge on the Lions by beating them and the entire NFC North. Granted, he only beat the Lions due to 3 missed field goals that game in the midst of our kicker woes.

  13. Gentlemen, we are the Steelers. The months of December, January, and February belong to us. We are the apex of sports. We built America with sweat and steel. Follow our lead and we will bring you to a wonderful place full of trophy cases, confetti, and engraved gold. March with us.

  14. Baltimore Ravens (No. 12; 9-5): Like 2012, they’re finding the gas pedal in December.

Really?? That’s what you say after an 8 point home win against the Jags??
As a Colts fan, i’m BEGGING for the Ravens to come to town for Round 1

Pats fan. But Seahawks should be #1. Pats #2.

Let them battle it out in Glendale.
    ————–

That doesn’t make sense. The Patriots have more wins against more quality teams. They haven’t lost a home game either. Putting Seattle ahead would only be based on opinion.

  16. I hate to say this, but Dallas has an offense on par with Green Bay, but with a better defense. Dallas also beat Seattle. So I would rank Dallas ahead of both of those teams. Take out the hate & look at the facts, there’s no way Seattle is better than Dallas.

  17. Arizona won’t even make the playoffs.????

They’ve already clinched a spot. One of the 4 teams that are already in.

  18. I have watched every snap of Packer football this year and the most impressive thing I’ve seen this year was the Bills defense. Marrone stated from the beginning that he wanted to build on the defensive side of the ball, and what do you know…not even two full years into the program and they hold Peyton Manning and Rodgers to 0 TD passes back to back.

Not a Bills fan by any means, but Marrone would be Coach of the Year if it wasn’t for Arians. Letting him go even if they lost to the Packers would be the most Bills thing ever.

Arizona won’t even make the playoffs. “Win the superbowl” LOL.

    ———————————————————————

Arizona’s the only NFC team so far to have already clinched a playoff spot this year. You want to try again?

  20. Bobby Wagner is amazing. But it’s laughable that he’s defensive player of the year. Watt is hands down the defensive player of the year and the mvp. It will go to a player who makes the playoffs but watt is the best player in the league this year. Regardless if that’s debatable or not watt is a unanimous dpoy.

  21. The Colts are probably the weakest 10-4 team in the NFL.
With no running game and a middling defense, it wouldn’t surprise me if they get blown out by whomever they meet in the first round of the playoffs.

  22. 19. Carolina Panthers (No. 22; 5-8-1): When the Panthers host the Browns, the guy who was in a car wreck will be facing the guy who is in a train wreck.

It should be Derek Anderson that plays. Panthers should be able to beat Manziel and the Browns without Cam. Rest him one more week.

  23. You’re delusional to think the pats have any sort of a chance against the Hawks. We match up well with them. Just need to shut down gronk, besides him the pats have zero playmakers. Eat it up haters. The Hawks are the best team in football and are going to repeat.

Other teams fans envy our teams players. Other teams players envy our teams fans. #choochoohawksdynastytrain

  24. Take out the hate & look at the facts, there’s no way Seattle is better than Dallas.
    ===========================

Seattle’s defense is lights out. Dallas’ isn’t.

Seattle offense is good at times, bad at times, but very efficient. Dallas offense is very efficient and as good as the pass protection of Romo allows it to be.

They aren’t the same teams to start the year and I don’t think Dallas would get 30 points in a rematch with Seattle.

  25. Denver is not getting better. Up to now they still deserve to be #3 but Manning is throwing the ball less, obviously there is something going on there. I’d rather be Pittsburgh at #9 and trending upward right now.

  26. “13. Kansas City Chiefs (No. 15; 8-6): Great turnaround against Oakland, but it could be too late.”

You do realize that KC controls their destiny? If they win out they are in. They have to beat Pittsburgh and San Diego to do it, which may not happen, but if they win both games they own all tie breakers. Not sure what it’s too late for…

  27. Lions lower the Packers because..? Lions have won more consecutive games, are in first place alone and have beaten the Packers. Yep, makes sense.

There is no scenario in which the Packers clinch the North this weekend but a clear scenario in which the Lions do (win and a Packer loss).

  28. Scenario:

    Week 16
Pats @ NYJ – Pats win
Denver @ Cincy – Cincy wins
Buffalo @ OAK – Buffalo wins

Not a 100%, but a reasonable scenario, giving New England home field no matter what

    Week 17
    Buffalo (9-6) @ NE (12-3)

Buffalo could win it based purely on New England resting starters. We’ll see…

  29. Poor Cardinals. They’re the Rodney Dangerfield of the NFL. Arians should be a no brainer for coach of the year with what he’s done with the injury prone team.

  30. The Steelers are far too high. The defense is awful and they have only been lucky all year while riding Bell who is the best RB in the league. That “team” isn’t even in the top 20.

  31. Also: Redskins are the worst team in the leauge. Bob is the worst starter in the leauge. They might as well put Cousins back in.

  32. Oh goodie, some more of the “Well, we beat team X, so we are automatically better than that team” Logic. Seriously, if you think that, especially for games that happened two months ago, please try following a different sport.

  33. billswillnevermove, Bills are better than the Steelers? Ignore the fact the Steelers have 1 more win thus far and beat them the last several times they have played, the Bills are 2-4 against winning teams and 4-6 in the AFC. Bills have the better defense, not team.

  34. steelcurtainn says: Dec 16, 2014 12:03 PM

The steelers will be standing last.

    ——————————
Actually, I think the Browns will be standing last. The Steelers will be standing in 3rd as the 6th seed.
3 AFCN teams in the playoffs

  35. @trumb1mj

The rankings are taking into consideration that the Packers are playing the Bucs this weekend and the Lions at home the following week and of course we know that the Lions haven’t won in Lambeau since football was invinted

  36. seahawksfansince2013, the Seahawks may have the better defense but the Patriots are not far behind. Patriots have a good ground game and no other playmakers then Gronk? LaFell is coming in strong and Edelman makes plays in the pass game and return game. Seattle’s best receiver is something like 65 in the league. Would take the Pats over the Hawks.

  37. “12. Baltimore Ravens: Like 2012, they’re finding the gas pedal in December.”

    ——————————————————————-

Irony: The Ravens lost 4 of their 5 final games of the season in 2012, and also fired their offensive coordinator during that stretch. They didn’t find any kind of gas pedal until the playoffs actually started in January.

Now what is consistent between that team and now is that most non-Ravens fans don’t take the team seriously at all, albeit for different reasons. They didn’t take the team seriously in 2012 for the reasons I just listed, and they don’t take the team seriously now because of their patchwork secondary (and that’s a polite labeling).

  38. “The Steelers are far too high. The defense is awful and they have only been lucky all year while riding Bell who is the best RB in the league. That “team” isn’t even in the top 20.”

    Antonio Brown says what?

  39. I believe Pegula will keep Marrone as Head Coach, but he will make him rid of the Offensive Coordinator Hackett. Schwartz will be offered a bigger contract to keep running the Defense, but will probably go seek a Head Coaching position since a few spots will likely be opening up at seasons end. The Special teams coach will stay, but there will be many position coaches being replaced… WR, TE and Offensive line Coaches to name a few. Doug Whaley has done an awesome job with FA pickups and resigning his own players… Hopefully Pegula will notice this and keep the duo of Russ Brandon and Doug Whaley intact… It would be a serious letdown to see those positions change at all. Overall, besides a few weak spots with the Coaching staff, the team IMO should be kept together… But, this will be Pegula’s first test as an Owner, so who knows what will happen for sure. #GoBills

  40. Teams that should never be allowed on MNF: Bears, Redskins, Jets, Falcons.

    America thanks you.

  41. The Steelers’ fan is funny. Keep building those bridges and paddling boats or whatever it is you do. You’re amusing.

  42. @irishgary I thought this was a week-to-week power ranking of what has happened to this point? Lions have won 2 straight, Packers have lost one and were beaten by the Lions earlier in the year.

If you haven’t noticed, the Lions are always the lowest rated team of the teams with the same record despite them having the top scoring defense in the NFL.

Even the Bills get more credit than the Lions. When the Bills shut down ARod it’s because they have a great defense but when the Lions do it’s because it was before ARod said “RELAX”. Meh. Just win.

  43. Lions are the same as usual. They barely beat MN at home (needed a blocked FG). Stafford is Cutler 2.0, the gift that keeps giving.

New England resting their starters? That would have to be the first time in the history of Bill Belicheck’s tenure as head coach.

  45. I am a fan of both the Bills and the Steelers, but I think the bills would win head to head. Their defense is tenfold what the steelers have. And the Steelers offense is no better than the Lions or Packers, which have both been beaten by the bills. Not to mention the steelers are inconsistent

  46. J.J. Watt may be the MVP, and Bobby Wagner may be the defensive player of the year.

Good lord…can we PLEASE stop the “JJ Watt for MVP” talk??? He is on a 7-7 team that will not make the playoffs. Have the criterion dropped so much that the media still make this claim? I’m no fan of the Falcons, but Julio Jones is more of an MVP candidate than Watt. At least his team still has a shot at the division.

  47. Stafford is the gift that keeps giving? actually, he has thrown two less picks than Rodgers over the last 3 games. I am not saying he is elite but he has eliminated many of the mistakes from his game this year that lead to turnovers in the past. And with the way our D is playing that may just be good enough.

  48. Getting Bobby back put Seattle’s defense back to the top, and he has been the key there, but he’s probably missed too much time this season to win Defensive Player of the Year.

After Rodger’s performance this weekend, it’s not a stretch to believe that JJ could win MVP any more. But he’s a lock for DPoY.

  49. Really?? That’s what you say after an 8 point home win against the Jags??

    Agreed!!!!

  51. Not that it is a huge difference, but the Colts are 5-0 in their division. 5-4 against all others. I will gladly accept the label of “weakest 10-4 team in the league”. The Colts ran the ball to ice the game on Sunday, and there defense has given up 10 and 3 points the last two weeks.

The Steelers have lost to the Bucs at home, Packers just lost to the Bills, Pats got blown out by a team that still hasn’t thrown a TD to a wide receiver!! Anyone think the AFC North benefits from playing the NFC South this season, they are 12-2-1 against them. Throw the records out when the playoffs start…anything can happen!!

  52. Reluctantly, as a Bears fan, I fully expect the Lions to mash my team into the Soldier Field muck on Sunday. They are so far into “quit” mode the only thing left is for them t run out onto the field waving white flags. We might even see another 50-burger against that dreadful D.

  53. This site is full of Stoolers homers. The Steelers rank higher than the team that leads their division and just put a 30-0 stomping on Johnny Football.

  54. give stafford a break, zimmers defense has been great this year it’s just the whole thing of losing your best offensive weapon and starting a rookie at QB that has held the vikings back.

  55. Thank God for taking the Packers out of first place so no one will talk about them.

They are better equipped to operate under-the-radar than when everyone is heaping praise on them.

  56. Bengals, 2-3 record against winning teams, all 4 losses were blow outs with 2 at home. They also have a 6-4 conference record. Hold a half game division lead, due to not beating a team both the Steelers and Ravens blew out.

Steelers, 3-2 against winning teams, 7-3 against the AFC, currently holds the tiebreaker against Baltimore.

Ravens, 1-5 against winning teams and 5-5 in the AFC.

So yes, a half game division lead means less then actually putting away good teams, not to mention the Steelers blew out the Bengals 2 weeks ago.

  58. The Seahawks are not a complete team… Their D in unbelievable but their O is not very good. They are averaging 24 points a game this year, and 19 points a game over the past 5 games. They have no shot at winning a Superbowl with numbers like that.

  59. Rest one more week for what the offseason? e’ll have 6 months to do that if they don’t win their division.

    ____________

The Seahawks are also only giving up 17.3 points per game on the season and the past 4 games, since Wagner and Chancellor returned from injury, they’re giving up an average of 6.75 points per game. Meaning that the offenses 19.75 points per game in that same span is enough to give them wins by 13 points.

Also keep in mind that the Seahawks were in position to score in each of the last 4 games when time ran out. So they could have padded those stats a little by kicking a field goal at the last second of the game (like San Diego did against the Seahawks in week 2).

People also said the Seahawks offense wasn’t good and wouldn’t be able to keep up with Denver’s last year in the Superbowl. I think we all remember how that turned out.

  64. The Steelers lost to the Ravens who are (9-5) the (2-12)Buccaneers!! the (7-7)Browns… the (6-8)Saints and The (3-11)Jets… the Jets!!

EJ, 2-4 against winning teams, one of your losses are against best the Texans who the Steelers beat. Like is said, the Bills have the better defense but not team.

Steelers offense is 6th in points, 1st in yards, 2nd in passing, 10 in rushing. The defense is 21st, 19th, 25th, and 11th in those categories.

    The Bills on offense are 18th, 23rd, 19th, and 23rd. On defense they are 4th, 5th, 5th, and 9th.

Stopping Peyton and Rodgers is nice, but you seem to forget that Nelson dropped a ball he would normally catch for a 95 yard TD. The Bills put together a nice season but are not better then the 8 AFC teams ahead of them in the standings.

Not really disagreeing with you, but everything here is an opinion, or a guess at best.

  66. The Packers receivers had eight “drops” against Buffalo after having only 17 all season prior to that. I think the coaches will have the players undivided attention again and concentration won’t be a problem going forward.

  67. Right on about the Packers; perhaps the offense hasn’t been working as hard as they need to over the last few weeks and it caught up with them against a good defense.

What worries me is Rodgers’ assertion that if they need to, the offense will score 30 points every week. If you’ve watched the NFL over the last several years, you know that it doesn’t work that way in January.

  68. “24. New York Giants (No. 25; 5-9): It looks like Tom Coughlin may get a chance to miss the playoffs in six of seven seasons.”

The point is valid, but at the same time it’s a wee bit arbitrary to begin the count the season after they win a Super Bowl.

  69. Mrwalterisgod, Wrong. The Colts are 5-0 against the AFC South, not 6-0. Two of those wins are against the Texans, who aren’t a bad team. Colts are also 3-1 against the NFC North, the supposed best division in football. We all know the Colts arent better than the Pats or Broncos, but name 1 team ranked lower than them that should be higher.

  70. I laugh at all these folks whining about these rankings. Like it actually means anything. The playoffs and what team gets hot is what will decide things.

And statistics? Seriously? Some people are pointing out statistics to prove their teams greatness? Statistics are for losers… That is how the saying goes. Your favorite team could be giving up 10 points a game on Defense, then give up 50 in one game. What happens to that statistic then? Stats mean nothing. Elite teams find a way to win regardless of what the math might say.

  71. The Bills (9-5) have played the 9th toughest schedule (as of 12/15), the Steelers the 29th. 1 win diff. Green Bay and Denver couldn’t do much with Buff’s D, why would anyone think the Steelers would. IMO, Buff is a better team and would be slight favs at a neutral site

  72. @seattlefansince

“If you take away Grk they have no playmakers.”

Lol. “IF”. Well they DO have Gronk so now what?

    Weird take from you.

Seattle’s offense lacks production if you take Wilson and Lynch out of it. They’re nothing special.

    Makes sense right?

  73. First, would you guys buy some insight???

Seattlefansince2013 is a troll – he’s trying to play the part of pftpoet to make Seahawks look bad.

Having said that, Hawks would beat the Pats.

  74. realitycheckbaby, I have about as much love for the Patriots as I do for your Ravens, but the Pats have the edge.
    Defense, slight edge to Seattle.
    QB, big edge to NE
    WR, edge to NE
    TE, giant edge to NE
RB, Lynch is the best runner but NE has the better stable of backs

  75. Fellow LONG-suffering Lion Fans:
Do not despair at the lack of respect we get in forums such as PFT. Caldwell is taking the right approach and so should the fans. You get respect when you seize it on the field. Until we beat the Packers at Lambeau in December there will be no props.
First things first though- we have to focus on and defeat the Bears. Looks easy on paper, but nothing is easy in the NFL. Then we can talk about GB.

  76. Ok agreed the Niners have been horrible, deserving of a really low rank…but lower than he Panthers and Saints, whom they beat??? Wow what a decline!

  77. astburyj says: Dec 16, 2014 11:56 AM

Denver is not getting better. Up to now they still deserve to be #3 but Manning is throwing the ball less, obviously there is something going on there. I’d rather be Pittsburgh at #9 and trending upward right no

Right. Because now they can run it down your throat if need be that means they’re not getting better? Because now they are top 5 on both sides of the ball they aren’t getting better? Thanks for the look into your world and good luck with that whole Steelers thing.

  78. I’ve been a Seahawks fan since 1978. I like the Seahawks ranked right where they are. They were ranked behind Denver this time last year. Being ranked behind the Patriots this year is certainly nothing to be ashamed of, and if it has any bearing on the actual outcome, it is to motivate the underdogs, which is all good for us 12s.

Nothing would make me happier than to see the Hawks and the Pats in SB XLIX. It should be a great game. And I know every player on both teams would love to be in that game, knowing they’re testing themselves against the best the game has to offer. That’s the matchup I’m hoping to see.

  79. @steelerswillbefine…

First, the Steelers won’t be fine.

Second, I’m a Hawks fan, not a Ravens fan – wrong bird.

Finally, Hawks are #1 in total defense, #1 in passing defense and #5 in rushing defense.

New England is #17 in total defense, #22 in passing defense and #10 in rushing defense.

    Slight edge? OK

And if you’re going to talk about rushing the ball, Seattle is #1 in rushing offense vs NE’s #19, about 60 YPG difference.

Now I don’t disagree about Brady – although he’s the same sitting target as Manning was – and the receivers.

But don’t kid yourself thinking Seattle’s offense won’t be able to score on NE.

  80. Realitycheckbaby

Umm they wont be able to score on NE.. Lol you shut down Lynch and what do the Seahawks have? A terrible receiving core that cant get open and a QB that tries to run every other play. The Seahawks may be able to put up 14 points on NE if they are lucky. The Pats O would definitely put up at least 17 on Seattle’s D…. Not that the Seahawks will make it that far, but they arent winning anything this year.

  81. Seattle is not on the Pats schedule, yet anyway.
If they played at a neutral site this weekend, the Pats would be a 1.5-3pt favorite. Here are the stats that matter:

NEng is 1rst in scoring offense. Seattle is 11th.
NEngland is 8th in scoring D. Seattle is 2nd.
NEng is 4th in +/-. Seattle is tied for 6th.

Those are the stats that win and lose FB games.

History is not on the side of teams trying to repeat.

  82. @mikey 3213. Tell it to the Broncos, Packers, 49ers, et.al.

“you shut down Lynch, what do you have…?”

A quarterback who has won more games in his first three seasons than any other quarterback in NFL history. A defense that has shut down some of the best offenses in the league.

I don’t dismiss the Patriots. They’re a good team with a first-year-on-the-ballot HOF QB. But I guarantee Bill Belichick wouldn’t agree with your assessment of Seattle’s chances. The Seahawks are nobody’s easy pickings.

  83. The 49er’s are terrible… The Broncos and Packers were in Seattle at the beginning of the year , when neither team had their schemes figured out. The Seahawks are better than Broncos hands down because their DB’s are physical and the Broncos WR’s and TE’s are terrible when they play aggressive DB’s. But if they played GB again (especially in Lambeau) I think they’d lose by two scores. And don’t mention the Bills game, because the Seahawks have lost to some truly terrible teams. The Chargers, the Chiefs, the Rams? You can forgive the Chargers game because it was early in the year. But the Rams and Chiefs, gimme a break. The Seahawks are by no means an unstoppable team.

  84. @peshoo – There should be a few empty seats on the Cowboys bandwagon after they play week 16 without Demarco Murray.

The play-action passing game is toast if you don’t have a scary running back.

Romo can expect to spend some time on his back, this weekend.

  85. Seattle was stumbling around until the seventh game of the season. I think the Harvin situation contributed to that. The team was not playing as well defensively as they did last year. The guys on the offense were distracted to say the least. Baldwin was pissed off because he believed the team was losing its identity.

The loss to the Chiefs was a heart breaker, but it did expose the fact that Seatlle’s O-line leaves a lot to be desired. Too many sacks allowed, too many penalties against. There have been at least 2 clipping calls on Britt. There have been way too many holding calls.

We can complain that a lot more calls are being called against the Hawks but most of the calls are legit and our O-line is in need of some upgrades and some discipline.

We also need a bit of imagination down inside the redzone. We can move the ball well up and down the field against some of the best defenses in football but we stall in the redzone because they stack the line and challenge us to throw. The results speak for themselves, field goals predominate.

That is okay in the NFC West where defense is great but offense is suspect. Around the rest of the league there are better offenses.

Defense does win championships though. So we should be able to hang in there with the best teams in football, as we have done over the last few years. Yes. we have had breaks go our way, but every good team does.

To state that Green Bay was not ready in the first game is BS. They are pros. They gave it their best shot and lost. The Hawks gave Chargers their best shot in week two and lost. When you get beat by another team, on that day, for that game, the other team is the best on the field. Woulda, coulda, shoulda,…..

The Rams surprised a few good teams including an offensive juggernaut in Denver.

The Patriots and Green Bay are good teams. But like the Hawks they have their weaknesses and bad days.

As a Hawks fan I can honestly say I was surprised at the Super Bowl result last year. I wanted the Hawks to win but never imagined a blow out game like that.

That is why you play the game though. On that day the Hawks completely dominated the Broncos.

In the last 4 games the Hawks defense has dominated opponents. The offense has done enough to get it through. Beat Arizona by 16, 49ers by 16 and then 10, and Eagles by 10. 2 games played away from home too, one in the Eastern time zone. Traditionally a bad spot for Hawks.

The Hawks can control their destiny if they win out. Then if they get home field advantage they really do have an advantage.

The Super Bowl? We don’t even know who is going yet. Pats look solid. But we’ve seen 15-1 teams lose out (Green Bay and Minnesota), and the Pats lost when they were 18-0….to the Giants….who got hot.
The Ravens were 10-6 when they took out 49ers…the Saints were supposed to have no chance against the Colts when they won….

So the whole thing comes down to fate. Stay healthy, thats a plus, get a break on a bounce and or a bad call, thats a plus, have a player step up who was quiet all year, thats a plus.

I watched a show where one of the Steeler playoff runs in the 70’s featured something like 13 turnovers in 2 games…by he Steelers…who won the games anyway….great teams find a way.

  86. And Russeel Wilson has more victories in his first 3 years than any other QB in history. Say what you want he has a winner’s mentality about him. Some of his wins were big comebacks. In 3 years with him at the helm I think the biggest margin of defeat for the Hawks was 10 points. He gets sacked a lot and he runs a lot. Thats his O-line failing him, not him screwing up. He also gains a lot of yards on the ground.

    Yes the defense contributed. Immensely!

How many of the rings that Terry Bradshaw wears do you think were due to the Steel Curtain. And then Lynn and Stallworth…

Every great QB has a great supporting cast.

  87. Exactly. On any given Sunday, the best team on the field wins. There are scads of variables that change – injuries, bad moods, weather, somebody having an off day. Those are easy ones. And then one or two plays during the game change the momentum. I once read that the champion is the guy who makes the second to the last mistake.

When it comes to the Superbowl, I think that’s as accurate as any analysis I’ve ever read.

  88. And then, the flu ran through half the team just before the championship game and all the prognostications went out the window; reference 2006 AFC Championship game. Things can change in a moment; what if AZ manages to beat Seattle on Sunday? Then, the NFC Champ is up for grabs.

  89. The Cardinals this year are the perfect example of fate conspiring against a really good team that seemed destined for better things.

After 10 games they were 9-1 and had a 3 game lead in the NFC West. But they were down to their second string QB and had many other injuries. They then proceeded to lose their 2nd string QB and their premier running back. This happened as they were in the midst of their end of season jaunt through Seattle and San Francisco.

A team that isn’t healthy at the right time cannot win out. Seattle got healthy at the right time while Arizona had critical injuries. San Francisco simply imploded and lost its identity and integrity as a team. The 49ers were destroyed from within this season.

So Seattle is now in the catbird seat in the NFC West. One game to go and they face St Louis at home. The fates seem to be smiling on Seattle as the season ends. But it is as much about luck and timing as it it is skill and execution.

So as a Seattle fan I consider us as good, and as darned lucky.
