Cowboys rout Colts, win NFC East

AP

After an agonizing five-season absence, the Cowboys are back in the playoffs — and as division champions to boot.

Led by a spectacular performance by quarterback Tony Romo, the Cowboys rolled to a 42-7 victory over Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Romo was splendidly efficient, completing 18-of-20 passes for 218 yards with four TD passes, three of which came in the first half as Dallas quickly burst clear of sloppy Indianapolis, which committed eight penalties and three turnovers.

With the win, the Cowboys (11-4) clinched the NFC East title. They are guaranteed of hosting at least one playoff game. They will be the only NFC East club in the postseason, as Philadelphia has now been eliminated from playoff contention.

The Cowboys made short work of the Colts (10-5), who saw their faint chances at a first-round bye go completely by the wayside. The Cowboys never trailed, scoring on their first drive and never looking back.

The game was decided in about a 15-minute span in the first half. After Dallas had taken a 7-0 lead about eight minutes into the game, Indianapolis tried a fake punt on its own end of the field. The play looked it would lead to a first down, but rookie defensive back Dewey McDonald dropped a pass from punter Pat McAfee.

On the next snap, Romo threw his second TD pass, hitting Dez Bryant from 19 yards out to make it 14-0.

And from there, Dallas poured it on. A minute into the second quarter, Romo threw another TD, connecting with Colt Beasley on a 24-yard score. And when tailback DeMarco Murray plunged in from a yard out later in the period, Dallas had a 28-0 lead.

Incredibly, the Colts’ first points didn’t come until about five minutes were left in regulation. By then, quarterback Andrew Luck had been pulled from the game as the AFC South champs looked ahead to January. And for as poorly as they played, the Colts will be one of 12 teams with a chance to win the Super Bowl.

So too will Dallas. And with Romo in sharp form and their defense holding up its end of the bargain, the Cowboys look like real contenders.

It’s enough to make 90s kids dust off their Apex One and Starter Dallas jackets. On Sunday afternoon, the Cowboys were back. And the NFC East, finally, is theirs once again.

  2. When the Cardinals loose tonight and the Cowboys get a first round bye next week…

The Cowboys will officially be the most dangerous team in the playoffs.

  3. Jerry Jones demonstrates he may have the best football mind in NFL history. Hard to imagine he doesn’t win GM of the Year.

  4. Sorry Dallas, playoffs will go through Seattle and you won’t beat is when we’re healthy.

Congratulations to Tony Romo aka the most underrated and overhated QB in history. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving player

I could,nt agree more..qbr at 111.4 completing 70% this year playing at an mvp level

  6. If Nick Foles and the Eagles offensive line would have stayed healthy the Cowboys would have finished in second place in the NFC east. You can’t make the playoffs with captain turnover Sanchez at QB.

  7. Seahawk fans. Listen carefully. You can’t have home field and the #1 seed if you and Dallas finish with identical records. That is because they kicked you in the teeth and hold the tiebreaker. They will kick you in the teeth again if need be.

  8. Love all the Romo love from his “fans”, pretending as if they weren’t the same ones trashing him for the last 8 years. Now he’s “underrated” and “over-hated”. Too funny.

Maybe you shouldn’t have. But then again Dallas fans have only followed football recently.

See it’s REPETE as in PETE Carrol. HTH

As for winning in Seattle, I’m not sure we’ll be starting 5 back ups and 6 third stringers like last time.

    But you can hope.

  10. Tony Romo chokes in Dec.- Wrong
Cowboys can’t win in Dec.- Wrong
Philly is going to win the NFC east – Wrong
See where I’m going with this? All you haters wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. You all failed your football intelligence test. As always, Go Cowboys NFC East Champs!!!!!!

  11. Congratulations to the Cowboys. Nice win…Memo to teams who were eliminated this weekend: If you can’t handle your own business in your own game, don’t be angry if outcomes in other games don’t go your way to bail you out.

  12. I always thought the Colts were not all they appeared to be, but damn… I didn’t think the Cowboys would roll over them like that, either.

And to Eagles fans… sorry. As a Bears fan I would have much preferred your team went to the dance and the Pack stayed home.

    Uhhh wrong.

If Hawks win last two we HAVE home field regardless.

You see Green Bay plays Detroit and the winner will have the same record as the Hawks and Dallas assuming we both win out.

Guess who wins a three way tie breaker?

    Hawks.

Guess who wins if it’s us and Green Bay or us and Detroit.

    Hawks.

Now you know why Hawks are not only the best team but have the most knowledgeable fans in the NFL.

  15. Congrats to Michael David Smith. The only PFT writer to predict Dallas would make the playoffs. Even though he did have them at #6 with the Eagles winning the division 🙂

  16. Let the Eagles hate flow through you. With each passing moment you make yourselves more our servants. Eliminate us and we will grow stronger than you can possibly imagine.

She was trying to be ironic. Pete Carroll, get it?

  19. Can Seattle fans please stop with all the injury excuses for why Dallas stomped your sorry overrated team. Not one person said anything about all these injuries prior to or immediately after the game. It’s a lame excuse if you’re in such a hurry to get shutdown by Dallas just be patient and wait your turn its coming.

  20. there was a post earlier about the cowboys being a higher seed. I am almost positive cowboys cant move up no matter who loses. cowboys tie breakers are the worst even with a good record. cardinals , packers, lions, seahawks all own better conference records. no way to move up. it sucks but at least we are in. unfortunately I think the roads go through seattle and green bay. tough places. by the end of week 17

  21. Is there any truth to the rumor that the eagles will be changing their fight song to there is no place like home for the holidays ?

  22. Yes, this game was Romo’s revenge, against the NFC East and all the “can’t win in Dec.” haters.
Hottest team in the League right now and Romo will win the MVP. He earned it. For the first time in his career he has a young O-line that has gelled quickly into one of the league’s best. Credit to Frederick and Martin. Fortify the defense in the off-season and the trophies will return.

  23. I hate to say it but the boys can actually get to the SB if they can beat seattle again….other than them every other NFC team seems really vulnerable.

  24. Your welcome Cowboy nation for giving you the East a week early by beating the mouthy annoying Eagle Nation out of Fed Ex field. Enjoy sitting on the couch next to us Philly LOL! As a Redskin fan it sickens me but as a football fan I’m glad to see Romo get a Big win he’s been a real pro over the years. enjoy the title Cowboys you deserve it. Redskins we get it back in 2015.
    HTTR

  25. Hey romosrevenge:

The team hasnt dont squat yet. They won 13 games in 2007 and were a much better team than they are this year….and what happened?

  26. @arwiv the ’07 cowboys were nowhere near the team these cowboys are. If you’re basing that on record I wouldn’t. The ’07 cowboys offense was in a sense one dimensional they had a solid passing game but lacked a good running game. I’m not saying the ’07 cowboys couldn’t run the ball but they won games by being dominant in the passing game. They weren’t the kind of team that was gonna grind out many if any tough wins. If a good opponent could keep the game close they could easily beat the ’07 cowboys

  27. Realitycheckbaby the cowboys are getting hot at the right time. It ain’t about how long you’ve been hot that’s important it’s that you get hot at the right time. Keep bragging about Seattle being hot the last half of the year cause they’re gonna overheat and burn out faster than a discarded cigarette

  28. Cowboys fans congrats on winning the division but the Giants are gonna dominate the division for years to come that team is going to be scary next year.

  29. Damn…my Colts were flat out embarrassed today. Props to the Cowboys for winning your division. We aren’t going far with a performance like today’s…stupid taunting penalty turned the game early. Luck needs a better HC. Pagano is a great guy but just isn’t the guy to take the Colts to the next level. I have no ill will towards the Cowboys, so get it done in the NFC. We’re probably one and done until we can get Luck a decent O-line.

  30. Romo for MVP? From the worldwide leader-

Despite managing a surgically repaired back, Romo leads the league’s quarterbacks in completion percentage (70.3), yards per attempt (8.49) and passer rating (114.4). Romo has thrown for 3,406 yards with 32 touchdowns and only eight interceptions, leading the Cowboys to an 11-3 record in games that he has played.

Romo has been at his best during the Cowboys’ December drive to the division title. Dallas is 3-0 this month in large part due to Romo completing 79.2 percent of his passes for 688 yards and 10 touchdowns with no interceptions

  31. @realitycheckbaby nervous of what? You’re the one commenting on a thread that had nothing whatsoever to do Seattle just to run your mouth about how “great” Seattle is. Who are you trying to convince? Cause no cowboy fan is convinced. All we know is what already happened this year. And this ain’t the first cowboy article I’ve seen you throw in your 2 cents about Seattle on. You’re the one who seems nervous. And you should be cause Dallas is coming to pluck some Seahawk feathers. Again.

You can pretend that Dallas didn’t whip the Seahawks, but that doesn’t make it any less true.

    Uhhh wrong!
I know that it is a long shot but if Green Bay and Detroit tie next week and Dallas wins as do the hawks then Dallas and the hawks would lead the conference with a 12-4 record and Detroit would win their division with an 11-4-1 record.

Guess who would have home field advantage throughout the playoffs then?

Dallas would, do to the fact that that they already whipped the hawks.

So now you know why Dallas is the best team and that the hawks fans may not be as knowledgeable as you think you are!!!

  34. Love how all the Cowboys fans are bragging like they don’t already know deep down in their hearts that the Cowboys are going to have a very hasty one-and-done playoffs trip. I mean seriously, how many times has Romo just completely screwed you guys over since he’s been there? I see it happening again. Romo just doesn’t have that clutch gene. He can have everything going his way and still manage to somehow blow the game. DeMarco Murray is injured and running out of gas fast. I like Dez Bryant but he seems to never show up against the tougher defenses, and the Cowboys defense is not as historically bad as everyone predicted, but they’re still not very good and don’t have any defensive game-changers.

  35. Give it a day and we get to hear how great Seattle is beating the 3rd string version of the Cardinals, and that they will win the SB and all that jazz. Look Seattle needs to be nervous. Just like every other team needs to be nervous, because as it stands, the formula to beat any NFC team is the same, run the ball and control the clock. Offense can’t win games on the bench. 3 teams that do this well are Seattle, Dallas and Green Bay on occasion.

As a Dallas fan, I am happy we are in, but now it’s time to really get into gear. Tonight was a glimpse of what is possible when we execute 100%

  36. The Cowboys pound the rock with Murray behind the offensive line and win the division while Chip Kelly has the eagles trying to run more offensive plays than everybody else.

How that work out for ya Chip? Cowboys NFC East champs and eagles are chumps.

Hi , Eagles fan here and I just wanted to say Congrats to the Cowboys on a winning season. As much as this hurts me I have to give credit where credit is due. The Eagles Came up small when the going got tough.
Where on the other hand the Cowboys buckled down and took control of their own destiny. Well Done, Well done .
    We’ll see you next year.
