Patriots hold off Jets, clinch first-round bye

AP

If Rex Ryan is fired by the Jets on Black Monday, he might be getting calls from other teams looking for a coach.

He should also be getting calls from the teams that will face the Patriots in the playoffs. Coaching what might be his final home game with the Jets, Ryan summoned a strong defensive effort from his 3-11 team that kept them in the hunt for a win into the final minutes. For the second time this year, though, a play on special teams by the Patriots helped seal their fate.

Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork appeared to get part of a finger on Nick Folk’s 52-yard field goal try in the fourth quarter and Folk, who had a kick blocked at the buzzer in New England earlier this year, saw his kick fall short. The Patriots ran clock from there and left MetLife Stadium with a 17-16 victory that clinched a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

Ryan should be getting calls from potential Patriots foes to pick his brain about keeping the Patriots to 231 yards while sacking Tom Brady four times. It was a physical, impressive effort by the defense that looked like it might pay off with an upset win when Marcus Williams picked off a pass that Brady threw under duress in the fourth quarter.

The Jets wound up moving backward when Dont’a Hightower sacked Geno Smith after a blown protection, though, and Folk’s field goal went awry to confirm another loss in what looks like Ryan’s final season. Smith didn’t play a terrible game at all, completing 17-of-27 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown to go with the interception that set up New England’s go-ahead score, but, as was often the case in Ryan’s tenure, the offense wasn’t up to the task on a day when the defense brought the fire.

Brady was 23-of-35 for 182 yards and the Patriots found some success on short, quick passes that negated the Jets pass rush. That worked infrequently, though, and it was a rough day for the offense. Wide receiver Julian Edelman, running back LeGarrette Blount and guard Dan Connelly were all out, which may have contributed to a performance that probably won’t cut it against better competition. There’s time to tweak things, especially if the Bengals can help the Patriots out by eliminating the Broncos from the race for the top seed in the AFC.

  1. Only do pats fans think the Super Bowl is held in the regular season.

They beat the lowly jets woohoo. Since 2004 all we remember is these guys getting punked in the post season wig belicheater giving his usual smug look.

Can’t wait until these guys go away.

  2. That was a rough call to give the Pats the first down. But the defense stepped up today. It’s clear that Dan Conoly, Cameron Fleming, Blount and Edelman are needed in the offense.

What, the Ravens that just gave up their post season slot to San Diego ?

Pats need ref help to win games, just another Sunday in the NFL.
    ——————————————————–
Did the refs cause the missed field goal, the interception or the Jets run defense to suck in the last 4 minutes of the game? Also other than the yardage call the Patriots were penalized 5 times to only 2 times for the Jets. Sorry but the Jets choked that’s why they lost.

  7. “4 and Inches? Oh, it is the Pats, let’s give them a first down”

Hey, I don’t disagree that that was a bizarre looking call, but I watched replays of the Jets sacking Brady and on every one a Jet a defender had a hand in a Patriot lineman’s face and was shoving his helmet straight up, but no flags were thrown for hands to the face.

  8. Give credit to the Yets, they played New England tough today.

They lost, as they usually do in the Rexy/Belli era, but this team almost always plays the Pats hard- unless they’re getting the snot beat out of them.

It’s been a fun rivalry these past many years, especially under the Rex Ryan “Super Bowl” years, and it probably will end after Ryan is fired a week from tomorrow.

Just remember Jets fans, Tom Brady is washed up 😉

    BWAAAAAA HAAAAAAA HAAAAAA

    12-3, after a 2-2 start!!!!

  9. @patsfan1820

Nah, but you needed help getting a touchdown and a first down to keep the ball away from the Jets who spent much of the day moving the ball with ease. The Pats have always gotten ref help because they’re the league’s darlings. You don’t have to like it but it doesn’t stop it from being true.

  10. That 4th and inches was a bad camera angle and it WAS a first down. Any Jets fan claiming the refs helped New England is crazy considering the field goal the Jets got to re-kick last year after they called a penalty on Chris Jones NEVER called before. Also how was that not a face mask on 3rd down where Amendola had his helmet ripped off BY the face mask?

  11. So Pats won an ugly road game against a tough divisional opponent and sealing a first round bye with the potential #1 seed? I’ll take it! Better then losing, IMHO. Sucks for the Jets though. Oh well, maybe next year…or not!

    ————————————————————
For the league’s darlings they sure rank high in penalties. Also that definitely was illegal contact before the touchdown pass to Gronkowski the Jets defenders had their hands in the Patriots faces all day and no calls. Plus the Patriots should have gotten more points if not for a bogus call that had Amendola’s return called back. Patriots should have won by much more you don’t have to like it but it doesn’t stop it from being true.

  13. The Patriots are a good team without a doubt.

However, they are not the best team in the AFC. That title belongs to the Denver Broncos.

The Patriots benefit from playing in a weak division against virtually no quarterback talent to speak of and have for a very long time.

Add in the blatant preferential treatment from the NFL and it’s easy to see how they win their division every year.

  14. The 4th down measuring call was deceptive to look at on T.V. The television angle was clearly not from straight across, but from back just a little bit, thus it looked like the gap was larger than it really was. In addition, it looked like the place they spotted it was where the first ref said, but the other guy came in , and was a few inches farther up the field. They almost always go with the farthest spot, so not sure whey they didn’t there. I also thought the replay showed that he made it, so not sure what there is to gripe about.

  15. nyjalleffingday, The Jets played a good game and probably should of won due to Brady peeing his pants when he gets pressure. When you say things like the Pats are the league’s darlings and that they have always gotten the refs help, it makes you sound like an ill informed hater and just plain dumb. Signed a Pats fan.

  16. This gamevs the Jets proves one thing : THE TRUTH, NO WAY THE PATSIES BEAT SEATTLE IN THE SUPER BOWL THIS YEAR ! IT WILL BE A TOTAL MASSACRE . LEGION OF BOOM WILL BE ALL OVER BRADY ALL DAY LONG. A BLOW OUT GAME ! BRADY WILL TAKE A VISCIOUS BEATING NEXT SUNDAY VS BUFFALO . BELICHICK WILL BE 3-3 IN SB GAMES . A .500 BIG GAME COACH . BOOK IT ! LMAO !

  17. The Pats won an ugly game on the road and are one game away from being the #1 seed. They have earned a bye for the last 5 or 6 seasons. Only an idiot would attribute all that to the refs favoring the Patriots.

It speaks volumes that opposing coaches and fans can only hope for something bad to happen to the Patriots and not for success that they earned on their own. That’s pathetic.

  18. @patsfan1820

The beneficiaries of the Tuck Rule are gonna whine about the Chris Jones kick and facemasks? Unbelievable. Look, y’all are loved by the NFL. Need a couple extra yards for a first or a TD? Sure, have ’em. Need a turnover overruled so you can get another chance you never deserved? Sure, let me scour through the rulebook for archaic rules nobody has ever heard of. ==============================
Denver fanboy, even Denver is better, noodle arm QB can’t win in Foxboro in January. In any case, worry about the Bengals first. Everyone in New England is hoping to see the Broncos in Foxboro in January.

  25. Denverdude7 if the AFC East is so weak, how is it the the Bills beat every team in the NFC North, that has two teams that are going to the playoffs. Oh and the NFC North has the best QB in the league. Try again with that nonsense.

  26. Pats have looked terrible on offense for the last couple of weeks. They’re not going to do squat until they figure out something with that trash offensive line. If the Pats performance is determined by oft-injured Dan Connolly, we’re so screwed for the playoffs.

Solder has regressed this year. Solder can’t guard a cracker from an ant.

Guard play had been up and down all year due to playing a tuba player (Devey) and Kline (who today was benched for the third time this year),

Stork has been solid at center, but is a rookie. He’s going to give up some plays here and there. Sebastian Vollmer has been really good this year, but he can’t do it by himself.

For their reserves, Marcus Cannon has done nothing but commit penalties every time he sees the field (glad they gave him a $9m extension this past week) and Cameron Fleming hasn’t been able to stay healthy enough to see consistent time on the field.

What a disaster that line has been…BB should be ashamed of himself for assembling that collection of offensive line players to protect Brady.

So goes the line, so goes the team. Simple as that.

Jets played a great game. It always seems to be a tight game decided by a score or just a total blowout by the Pats. I am one of those fans that will be happy to see sexy rexy somewhere else next year. He’s a great defensive coach that always got his guys to play hard.

Denver dude, the Pats whacked the Broncos not too long ago. Not sure how you could say they are the best team as theyve looked sluggish lately as well. The Jets, Bills, and Dolphins are all top 10 defensive teams with excellent pass rushes. The aggregate record of the AFC East will also be better than AFC west by end of the day.

    —————————————————
Beneficiaries of the tuck rule? Pardon me but the first beneficiaries of the Tuck Rule that I can remember are the Jets in a game versus the Patriots back in 2001. Also if the Patriots were so favored today why did they have more penalties today you idiot?! The Jets choked end of story your pissing and moaning is getting you a mostly thumbs down reaction so my guess is that most people aren’t supporting you.

  32. As is often the case, the Patriots are expected to win by more, but the Jets muck things up and make them look average, and the Pats make Geno look like an all pro, and then the Pats block a FG to win it. That’s just how it is with the Jets but this is nothing new. Look at the entire history of the rivalry and you will find there aren’t too many games separating them, and even stranger, the difference in total points over 54 years is almost zero. My point is that giving Rex Ryan credit for this is over stating things, and if you consider that his teams are obsessed with the Patriots at the expense of the rest of their season schedule, you will see that his over all job performance is very poor. Unless management over values “close but no cigar” games against the Patriots he should be fired, and rightfully so, however so should ownership and management of the entire organization. I’d go one step farther and fire that fan base as well.

  33. The Patriots play a soft defense against the Jets waiting for Geno to mistakes, but he plays his best games against them. So you had a QB playing over his head, a great Jets defensive game plan and effort, you win the stats battle across the board and you still can’t win a home game. Why not? Because you couldn’t kick a clutch field goal in the 4th quarter, and you could not stop the run in the last few minutes when it really mattered.

  34. As a Broncos fan, the Pats win killed me. Did they get lucky? Perhaps they did, but the Jets had their chances and couldn’t pull it off.

I know it’s a cliche, but that was the kind of game good teams like the Pats win, while struggling teams like the Jets lose.

  35. Hahahaha, I’m a Patriots fan but I’ve always oddly liked the Jets because all of my best friends are Jets fans. That being said, jets fans like nyjalleffingday crack me up. Excuses after excuse, with every comment being more humorous than the last. Imagine being so delusional that you believe the Patriots are favored by the league.

Jets played a great game today. I hope they continue to move in the right direction and make the AFC more competitive.

  36. Lol. Patriots fans are so sensitive man. Relax people. Your team will probably be playing at home throughout the playoffs. And to fans of other teams knocking the Pats, don’t waste your time. It’s all “thumbs down” because there are front-running Pats fans everywhere. Don’t bother wasting your time with these cry babies.

  37. ytsejamer1 You’re right about the line play being a problem, but don’t lose sight of the 12-3 record. It’s not a terrible line or they wouldn’t have a record like that.

New O line coach this year and the parting of Mankins have been an adjustment period, their play might improve next season. I would think they’ll add a guard or tackle in the higher end of the draft this year.

  38. Fans bragging over their 1 point win over a 4 win team.
NE is the annual beneficiary of the weakest division in football. And still, after basically having to play an 8 game season, due to their soft schedule, NE hasn’t won a SB in 12 years!

What happened last year in Denver? Oh that’s right….failure again to get to the big dance. Without Gronk your team is sooooo toast!

  39. There is no brain to pick for a playoff team. Just apply all out pass pressure. and watch the completely inept Josh McDaniel fail to adjust. Or go all out power running. I am a died in the wool Patriot fan. But I am fed up to my eyeballs with incompetent game management by McDaniel. What’s the mystery here? The Jets line up in all out blitz mode from Q1-Q4. For an immobile, yet great QB like Brady, what is the counter move? Simple! 2 TE sets (Gronk-Wright-Hoosh), coupled with 2 back sets. And ram it down the Jets throat with Gray, Boldin and Vereen. WIth an occasional screen or flare, to downfield release of Vereen. But the inept McDaniel just kept throwing all out with zero commitment to running. Amazingly incompetent game planning!

This was a day for ball control. Not filling the air with risky balls. God! I wish Belichick would let Tom Brady call his own plays. He does not need Josh McDaniel at all. And I maintain this even though I dearly hope I’m wrong. The only thing that really stands between another New England Super Bowl victory is not team heading to the playoffs. It is the incompetent game management of Josh McDaniel! It was stupid and reckless what he exposed Tom Brady too today.

  43. bigbamboom1, I agree with most of what you say. The one thing I’d take issues with is the statment “the great Tom Brady”. He once was great, but that is no longer the case. If you had or took the time and went back and watched film, it’s obvious that he’s not elite or great anymore.

He’s “not elite or great” really?

Season so far.. 65% completion 33 TD 9 INT 4000 yards passing. Team 12-3

But that’s “not elite OR great” riiiiight.

  47. DENVERDUDE had the line of the day, That the Broncos are the best team because the Pats play in a weak division and don’t play any good Qb’s. Stafford, Luck, Rivers, Rodgers, and OH YEAH PEYTON! They beat 4/5 of those teams! Including 1st place Cincinnati. So take that nonsense elsewhere

  48. Wizard…i think you are correct. They have to look at shoring up their line via the draft. I think they were planning on Solder taking the next step forward. Unfortunately, he’s taken a step back.

I’ll follow up with this… I love Rex Ryan’s defense. They always play everyone -ESPECIALLY the Pats- very tough. I’d love it if BB would give him a call if in fact Rex is let go on Black Monday. Make him a defensive assistant or advisor…maybe even assistant head coach. That accomplishes two things: 1) BB gets to stick it to the N-Y-J yet again. 2) Ryan gets to work with some good defensive players again – including REVIS. Imagine if it was Rex Ryan calling or even just helping the Pats defense. It’d be disgustingly good game in and game out.

Rex is a great defensive coach and I’ll be happy if he’s no longer leading the Jets. Come on Woody…keep Izdik and hire Jack DelRio…he’s pretty good!

  49. “I’ll follow up with this… I love Rex Ryan’s defense. They always play everyone -ESPECIALLY the Pats- very tough. I’d love it if BB would give him a call if in fact Rex is let go on Black Monday. ”

    ————————

Never happen. The Pats defense is architected by Bill. If you know anything about this team, you know that the versatile subpackages and subgroupings and the game-planning around opponent’s weaknesses and the selection of smart versatile players and the disguising of coverages and the transitions from play to play is what a Belichick defense is all about. This all changes if you hand the DC job to another architect.

  50. Good gritty win. The Jets played some good teams tough here. They even gave Denver trouble until Denver pulled away late. They beat Pittsburgh. They nearly beat Miami. And we all know the Jets were built to beat the Patriots, which is probably why the team compiles such poor records over the years. (They’re not built for a 16 game NFL schedule). So anything short of beating the Pats is a failure for the Jets. There are no moral victories here. They sacrificed way too much.

  51. Stop the hate, please! Who does more worth less? The Patriots organization! I’m sorry we don’t waste high picks oh hyped up QB’s & no talent pass rushers. Tom Brady gets no name players & makes them stars. Let’s see who got a deal off being a Patriot: Branch, Woodhead, Watson, Green-Ellis to name a few. I’m sorry we use our picks to actually help the team. The AFC east has 3 defenses in the top tier of the league & not 1 of those defenses is in Foxborough. Every year we hear ‘TB is done he has no talent’ but towards the end of the year it’s the Pats in the playoffs. Ok, we lost 2 SB’s & won 3….get there!!! We Patriots fans defend to the death because we do it every year with ‘no talent’. The only consistency we’ve had over the years is TB & BB. I get other teams fans are mad at the Patriots’ success but going online & trying to discredit what they’ve over the years just makes you look like a bitter hater. How can we be crybabies when we win…..a lot?

  52. ‘I’m a hawks fan and they are reigning Super Bowl champs not chumps like the patriots”

    ——————————

If not being a reining SB champ is what makes you a chump, then the Hawks are taking a brief break from a long history of chump-dom.

  53. bencoates57 – you are 100% correct but wouldn’t it be great if we had someone, anyone, with some gravitas coaching our defensive players? I’m still not sold on Josh Boyer and whomever else is coaching the secondary. Everyone they draft back there regresses to the point where they’re essentially coached right out of the league.

If I remember right, Parcells made room on his staff for BB as secondary coach/assistant after BB was fired from Cleveland.

I’d love it if Rexy was coaching at the very least, our secondary. It’s a pipe dream but darn it all…it’s my pipe dream.

  54. flash1287, The TEAM record is 12-3, and the main reason is the DEFENSE. Great/Elite QB’s don’t miss wide open receivers on deep passes downfield on a consistent basis, Tom practically leads the league. Great QB’s don’t over/under throw passes as often as Tom does, just because it’s a completion doesn’t mean it was a good throw. Gronkowski constantly makes great catches out of bad passes as does Edleman. When we have a different QB next year, come back and let me know what you think then. Go watch Aaron Rodgers he’s great. Tom is slow, unathletic and inaccurate with his passes, there was a time when he was a great, accurate passer on short and intermediate routes, not anymore. Watch the film.

  55. I was at the game, for anyone complaining about the spot the Jets got a favorable spot on 3rd and long earlier in the game, so this just evened it out. Im not shocked the Jets played this well, they are just unlucky this year and have no qb. I wonder if thats Rexs last game vs NE

  56. flash1287, and just for the record earlier in the season, someone asked a Patriot Hall Of Fame linebacker that played with him if he thought Tom Brady was still elite and he said NO.

  57. ytse,

You’re on to something here. I wish Bill could clone himself and serve as both DC and HC. We need an analysis of what these two defensive minds do best and determine whether there is a way to blend the two mentalities into the greatest beast of a DC ever.

Can anyone weigh in on whether each of the following would be best assigned to one coach or whether each of them possesses these skills, and if these skills are jointly owned, do they conflict?

    (1) personnel selection
    (2) player development
    (3) adapting schemes in response to what opposing offense is doing
    (4) adapting schemes in response to what opposing offense is telegraphing once emerging from the huddle
    (5) teaching defensive players to read offenses
when to use base defense versus sub-packages
calling the right sub-grouping for the appropriate down and distance
    (6) selection of players based on how their skills mesh together on the field (i.e., strength, speed, versatility, intelligence, durability, stamina)
    (7) player motivation / psychology
    (8) cap management and assigning appropriate financial value (contracts) to individual players and to overall units over time

And which criteria am I missing when I’m evaluating a defensive coordinator?

  58. Perfect outcome, Jets played hard but lose the game, still a chance to draft in top 3.

Now I get to do what I’ve done for the past 11 years, root against Pats in the playoffs and toast w my NJ pals when they are eliminated AGAIN!!!!!

Not gonna happen. I wouldn’t be surprised if Woody didn’t keep Rex and fire Idzik. The owner loves RR. Rex’s worst case next year is he’ll be a Head Coach with the Chicago Bears or Oakland Raiders. Or Defensive Coordinator & Assisstant Head Coach in Chicago like his Dad Buddy Ryan was. I think Rex is going to be a great HC the second time around. Just like Belichick and Pete Carroll.

flash1287, and just for the record earlier in the season, someone asked a Patriot Hall Of Fame linebacker that played with him if he thought Tom Brady was still elite and he said NO.

    WRONG

He said “at this time I cant say he was elite”

And he (Brushi) was asked after the first 4 games.

But since then he has said he is playing like the “elite QB we have seen”

  61. Anyone who expected the Jets not to play the Patriots tough today hasn’t been paying attention to this rivalry in the last few years.

Good teams win games like this and not-so-good teams don’t.

Pats aren’t going anywhere in the playoffs unless they figure out what happened today on the OL.

  62. And stop with “watch the film”

There have been plenty of former players and coaches who do this for a living that have “watched the film” who disagreement with you.

  63. This is the Jets “Super Bowl” every year since they haven’t been to one since before Man walked on the Moon

The Pats never take that lightly – though fans of other teams scoff at a win against the Jets

Wrecks would be a great consultant or DC but one need only look at his list of laughable “guarantees” and how he crushed his QBs confidence to know he’s no Head Coach

  64. flash1287, I know who it was (Tedy), and he said “I can’t say he IS elite”. The question was “do you think that Tom Brady is still Elite?” The way you put it makes no sense, of course Tedy thought that he was elite, as in past tense. The question was if he thought Tom was still elite. You can try to spin it anyway you want, I spend 95% of my time lying down (spinal disability) and spend way to much time watching Patriot film, new and old. What I see is a fading QB, accuracy wise, as they all do.

  65. flash1287 time will tell, sooner that you think. Go back and watch some film of young Tom and compare it to now, accuracy wise, big difference. It’s OK to have different opinions. TIC, TOC, TIC TOC, we will see.

    ———————————-

Since 2001, the Patriots’ record against the AFC East is 63-21, a winning percentage of .750.

Their record against the rest of the league is 85-29, a winning percentage of . . . .745.

In other words, they’re just as dominant against everyone else as they are against the AFC East, within half of a percentage point.

But keep trotting out that tired, overused ‘fact’.

  67. The NFL should entertain you if you are a football fan in countless ways. It does me. I will never understand the Patriots haters on one hand and the so-called Patriots fans that tear down the team’s achievements and its quarterback, Tom Brady. Both strike me as a miserable outlook on life.

  68. 8oneanddones, The T-E-A-M has clinched their 9th first round bye in 13 seasons. Just ask Bill Belicheck, it’s not about individual stats it’s about TEAM.

  69. tigerlilac how does a Patriot fan tear down the team’s achievements with his/her assessment of what they see in their performance. Does B.B. tear down the team’s achievements when he serves them “humble pie”. You can settle for just watching the game and being positive and happy with their performance. It’s not in my DNA to be happy with everything I see on the field. In my opinion the success that the team has had is overwhelmingly given to Brady. It is my opinion that its an over exaggeration, it’s a team effort. And I think that his performance has faded in the last several years, I’m not a robot that will tow the line.
I’ve had DTV package since 1999 and will continue to watch and criticize at my discretion. I enjoy it.

  70. So looking forward to Rex Ryan being dismissed so we don’t have to listen to that blowhard in press conferences talking about what “shoulda’ coulda’ mighta'” been. The fact that he is always taking shots at Brady tells me he’s in his head. Yes, you play him tough but you rarely beat him. Don’t you play the game to win?

    ————————————————

Indeed. the bummer is that in their stadium they have access to all their espionage equipment. If you think they have stopped cheating since being caught your sadly mistaken. “Spygate: The Untold Truth”……very interesting reading. Sorry patsies, truth hurts. A fraud of an organization

  72. Just remember Jets fans, Tom Brady is washed up
    BWAAAAAA HAAAAAAA HAAAAAA

    12-3, after a 2-2 start!!!!

    —————————————–

Its called espionage……Fraud of a franchise

  73. I get the ‘constructive’ criticism, but to tear down a consistent 12+ win team is a bit harsh. I have become a like BB over the years, pointing to what could’ve been better after wins. But Bill does that to motivate, to keep working. He doesn’t want complacent players. Coaching up players who consistent win 12+ games/year is hard to do. In fact, it hasn’t been done before for this long a period with same said coach.

As for Brady being less accurate, not elite, etc. Sure. I’m a Pats homer, but so what if 2014 Brady isn’t as good as 2007 Brady? He’s still a top 3-4 QB who plays his game differently. Reads defenses better, audibles effectively.

His deep throws haven’t been great, but it’s his first year with LaFell, the only deep threat. And I don’t recall LaFell being this all pro with CAR. People want to compare Rodgers to Brady, their deep ball throwing etc. Rodgers is #1 IMO. He’s also throwing to Jordy Nelson deep, or Cobb, etc. Do you WANT Brady throwing deep to Slater (like in BAL playoffs)? Gronk? Edelman? Wheb Brady HAD a deep threat, Moss, I recall he did pretty well.

All in all, I get the criticism, you always want to look to improve, but don’t forget to stop once in a while and truly enjoy great football being played.

  74. Brady as an “elite” QB with a poor to average defense: no rings

Brady as a good or game manager QB with a good to great defense: 3 rings

I see a pattern there. That’s not a knock on Brady – I mean Montana didn’t win a SB without a great D either – that’s just proof that the Patriots don’t need Brady to be at the top of his class to win a title this year.

  75. “Pats should send Geno a Christmas card if the jets had a better qb they would of swept the Pats this year.”

If the Jets had a better QB, the Pats would not have played the same vanilla defense and waited for him to make mistakes. Game plan says let Geno sit in the pocket and beat you with his arm – something he has not been able to do.

  76. Pats > Jets

    But not by very much.

10+ wins a year by New England while playing in a division where it’s considered a moral victory when their opponents don’t spike themselves doesn’t impress me very much.

Call me when you play a schedule that doesn’t include 6 guaranteed victories every year.

  77. Congratulations on the first-round bye. You’ve had a lot of success going that route the last 10 years.

  78. I’m a NYJ fan and I have major respect for the Patsies. Mostly because my grandpa is a huge NE fan and somehow in a family full of Patriots fans I became a Jet fan and these games me and him always come together for this game even though they’re always close and it may not be good for his health LOL. But the Pats will always be the Pats and the AFC east is on the rise. The Jets need an offensive minded coach who can try to get something out of Geno for at least another year because I don’t believe the future franchise QB is in this draft (not sold on Mariota) and another TE to complement Amaro along with upgrades at the offensive line positions and secondary and they will be a dangerous team.

Saying that I hope Woody makes the right decision with not only firing Rex but Idzik and Bradway as well. Good game pats! but I still hate you 😉

  79. “Congratulations on the first-round bye. You’ve had a lot of success going that route the last 10 years.”

If success is only measured by winning the Superbowl, then you are right. The Pats have had absolutely no success in the last 10 years, and should be considered on par with the Jets, Jaguars, Browns and Broncos.

    Lame!
Last season NE 4-2 in the division 8-2 out side the division
This seasonNE 4-1 in the division 8-2 out side the division

So as you can see they win more outside the division.
It’s okay we get it, you haters like to come up with any excuse you can to try and knock NE. It’s call jelousy!

  81. “Tom Brady got destroyed today !”

Translation: He won another game, on the road, and clinched a playoff bye, but because he did not put up 40 points he got “destroyed”.

Since the Broncos supposedly played the “easy” AFC East this year you’d think they would do a little better than +2 in point differential in 4 games vs the division…. #justsayin

  83. Too bad that the Jets don’t play as tough as they do against the rest of the league as they do the Pats.
    —-

They certainly played the Steelers tough. I stood up and applauded that beatdown. Just like I’ll do the same when the Steelers weak defense gets them sent packing in January.

Great read: False Glory by Steve Courson. A fascinating expose on the rampant and systemic cheating which the Steelers* built their so called dynasty. As a fan with so much honor and integrity and love for the sport of football I find it s disgusting that their cheating is rewarded by being acknowledged as a dynasty.

  84. The Jets were clearly robbed on that missed 4th down call. The Pats were about an inch or 2 short. The ref made the mistake of not looking at the markers from the right angle. I saw the same exact mistake in another game yesterday. My guess is that the refs are either under terrific pressure to keep the game moving and don’t take the time to get into proper position or they are horribly ignorant of some basic geometry. The gap appears widest when you are looking at it from the correct angle. The gap appears nonexistent when you are looking at it from a very bad angle. So those who claim that the TV angle threw us off don’t know basic geometry. Also the markers are too wide in spots which makes the calls tougher. The NFL is doing a terrible job on monitoring these calls.

  85. “The Jets were clearly robbed on that missed 4th down call. The Pats were about an inch or 2 short. The ref made the mistake of not looking at the markers from the right angle.”

Were you at the game? On the sideline, positioned right at the first down line? Because I didn’t see any angle on TV which would allow someone to say with confidence that the Patriots “were about an inch or 2 short”.

  86. Jets fans seem so bitter! Why don’t you guys try winning for a change. ‘Rex can coach’ you sit around with your NJ buddies to have a hate party? How lame is that? We may get eliminated but we get there. The Pats’ game plan varies week to week & it’s hard to be that team every year. We win a lot through the year & where does that put us in the draft every year? So we don’t get mounds & mounds of talent. The Colts sure turned things around after Manning & when they drafted Luck. The Jets get plenty of talented players that don’t do anything to help their losing ways. A lot of people hated the Micheal Jordan Bulls, or the Jeter Yankee years or the Cowboys hey day; the Pats are no different. To the other teams & fans of those teams; GET BETTER!!! Simple as that. It’s a bad look to hate on a good team when your team sucks!
