Report: Browns to “explore all options” at quarterback

That homeless guy apparently has given Jimmy Haslam some new advice.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns intend to “explore all options” at quarterback this season.

Those options include a possible trade up to get Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, a player with whom G.M. Ray Farmer reportedly is smitten.

The Browns will enter the draft with a pair of first-round picks that could be packaged in an effort to get Mariota, if the Browns decide to make a move up.  It would mean making a move out with current starter Johnny Manziel, whose wage-scaled contract would allow the Browns to keep both guys around, if they wanted to.

The willingness of the Browns to explore their options shows that they’re far from sold on Manziel, the 22nd overall pick in this year’s draft.  If they decide they were wrong about Manziel, it makes much more sense to admit the mistake and move on than to try to justify it by sticking with a guy who can’t get it done.

Besides, if Haslam won’t be firing his coach or G.M. after the season, he needs to fire someone, and the homeless guy who suggested that Manziel be drafted already is unemployed.

  1. The league needs to run Haslam out the way they did Eddie D. from Frisco. His crimes were equally as bad, with the big difference being that Eddie was a good owner.

  2. I’d give Connor Shaw a look before I trade draft picks to acquire Mariota, but that’s just me.

  3. Just me, but have a feeling at least 12-14 other teams are also exploring all options at QB too…

    Nothing to see here

  4. I’m personally tired of all of the Manziel hoopla, but can we give him at least another season before determining if he is a bust? This dump-a-QB-instantaneously mentality is exactly why the Browns have not been a good organization for several years running. They have plenty of other needs to fill – why use another pick on a QB?

  5. “I don’t care if you won some trophy and started a game in The League. You have my valet ticket!.. stop stalling, and go get my car.”
    Somebody. Pretty soon.

  6. I feel bad for any young QB drafted by the browns. Their career is over before it even started as soon as their name is called on draft night.

  7. Connor Shaw. Manziel is overrated. He had the great game against Alabama his freshman yr. If you watch a lot of his college games, most of his great plays were jump ball passes to a 6’4 Mike Evans.

  8. They should draft Mr. Clean … maybe he can scrub the ‘loser stink’ off that franchise.

  9. Decision could be easy, Johnny hurt and in locker room. No injury reported yet but sources say his feeling were hurt.

  10. As further evidence that NFL personnel are no smarter than some fans, the Manziel experiment has failed and will continue to fail. Why is it that fans understood this months before the Browns’ personnel figured it out?

  11. If I’m Mariota or any other really high pick I’m looking at history of some of these franchises. You have one career. Why would you waste it on one of these franchises that have proven over and over again that they are incapable of creating an environment where your career will not be wasted. I would strait up declare that I will not under any circumstances sign with the Browns, Jets or Raiders. Signing with any of these disorganized messes is career suicide.

  12. Sure, why not? Let’s give Grossman, Cutler, Sanchez, Orton and Mallet a look. While we’re at it, why not dust off Couch Anderson, Dilfer and Holcomb too! Come one, come all to Hotel Berea. Check out any time you like, but you will never leave.

  13. Johnny Roadkill. I knew that nickname would come in handy if he ever got to play “his game”.

He’s gonna be a hit at family gatherings showing the kids how he used to do it.(back in the day)

  14. Kyle Orton for a first round pick.

Its the Browns. You never know.

Guaranteed to give Donte Whitner nightmares.

  15. Forget Mariota. The Browns need to give as many first rounders as they have to so they can get Winston. He is the QB who will take a team to the Super Bowl.

  16. As a life-long Browns fan, I can’t believe the ignorance of the front office. That says it all.

As long as there aren’t any crab legs in Cleveland.

  18. I think it’s funny the “homeless guy” advice thing is still being brought up…talk about beating a dead horse….sheesh dude!

Look im sure Mark Sanchez wished people would stop “beating a dead horse” too when they voted the butt fumble the not top ten play about a year in a row. But dude when your owner takes first round pick advice from a homeless dude…THAT never gets old!

    Just like Terry Bradshaw’s obituary.

  20. The Browns remind me of a girl that could never pick the right guy. When it seemed like he was nice, he was a cheater, he never worked, whatever. Same with each guy. She finally stopped using her own judgment and picked someone else’s guy. Let the other woman do the vetting. The Browns need to go and get a proven commodity at this position because I think Johnny is number 22 at this position since the New Browns have come back to town.

  21. Looks like Bridgewater had another good game today.

You know, when you spend $10,000 on a research study that advises you which QB to take and you don’t do it, you can’t blame Manziel, and you can’t blame Hoyer, who’s a journeyman backup for a reason. Think of what this season might have been in Cleveland if they stayed put and took Watkins at #4 and Bridgewater at #22 (or even slightly lower while pick up an extra pick). Might have had a real shot at the playoffs and not folded down the stretch when the games mattered the most.

  22. Before we drafted Manziel I didn’t want him.

When we drafted him, I accepted him as my guy. Loyalty to my team and all.

After he sucked in his first start, I said, “Give the guy a chance.”

Gotta be honest, I just don’t think this guy has it. And it isn’t about building a body of work, it’s because I think he has existed on arrogance and raw ability at levels FAR below what the NFL has to offer, and no amount of arrogance or raw ability will bring success for this guy.

That said? If you aren’t a Browns fan or just want to rail against the Franchise? Find another board. It’s like watching soap operas….always awesome to validate your own day by crapping on someone else’s. No one is here insulting your team. And frankly 30 of them could be insulted. Get a freaking life.

  23. Hoyer knows the game, but his arm is erratic. Poor Manziel is just plain clueless. After 16 years, why can’t the Browns find a QB who is just slightly above average?

  24. I think the HC told the OC to call the QB sweep. Lets see if his balls can back his talk. Obviously they can. He did not slide and took the hit. But it answered many questions. Hoyer is a better back up than Johnny.

  25. You let your best option go before giving him a chance….
    Go get Vince Young….
For the price, — he’s the best quarterback out there….
(NFL Rookie of the Year, 2 Pro Bowls, Playoff experience and Mobility). Vince has a career winning record of 31-19…
This game is all about winning and Vince Young can win…

  26. Yes build more depth around Hoyer…like a DOMINANT DOMINANT offensive line!!!

In my opinion the Johnny Manziel HYPE is a distraction… especially for Hoyer!!! I refuse to call him Football and wish the media would stop too because he hasnt proven a damn thing. Hamstring my a55!!!

Johnny No Football would be more appropiate!!!

  27. Ha! Manziel has one bad game (his first) and now they’re looking for options? That’s insane, not surprising for the Browns though.

I thought they did well this year with what they had on the roster and the new staff, it’s a shame they’re going to continue to make dumb moves.

  28. Trade down in the draft, get yourself 3 picks in next year’s 1st round and then use those to get a QB if Manziel doesn’t pass the test with a full year as a starter. There are only 2 decent QB’s this year and one might not translate to the NFL, the other might be in jail or suspended for something stupid.

  29. Trade a 4th rounder to Chicago for Cutler. Keep Shaw as a backup. Draft a project late (Sean Mannion?). Spend your 2 first round picks on a run stopper and an interior lineman, get a receiver in the 2nd round and go to the playoffs.

  30. If the Browns really want to make a statement that says they will support a QB then they will give Hoyer a contract and get some Offensive line help for him and make it clear that Hoyer is their man. Quit this changing QB every year and start to commit. Hoyer did pretty damn good with all the injuries and had some great games. They have some good draft picks now go after some depth.

Manz-Elf is more like a dead pony.

  32. Browns up to the same old crap again. I know it’s pure speculation at this point because A LOT can change from now to May, but why would Farmer be smitten with similar prospect that had great success at college level in a very QB-friendly, shotgun system that’s just taller and a little bit more talented than JM. Honestly it’s unfair to judge Johnny against the Bengals who just made a future HOFer throw 4 picks. Also wouldn’t be a bad idea to give Shaw a shot if they are looking at “all options”. But If I’m Mariota, I’d pull a Eli if the Browns trade up just because of their history with rookie QB’S, however I hope they trade both of their firsts (and more) to the Titans so we can stockpile talent

  33. I’d say, Mike, this is the fastest turnaround I have ever seen you make. All year long you were talking up Johnny Football. “Browns must start Johnny Football. Browns need to pick Johnny Football. Blah, blah, blah Johnny Football” and now you’re ready to throw him overboard. As fast as you are back peddling, I’m surprised you weren’t a starting cornerback. Have some integrity.
