Peyton Manning has no plans to retire this offseason

Since all he has to do is hand off and throw interceptions, of course Peyton Manning isn’t going anywhere.

The Broncos quarterback said Wednesday that he planned on playing for the Broncos next year, assuming they want a 39-year-old quarterback.

I certainly plan on being back if the Broncos will have me,” Manning said, via Mike Klis of the Denver Post. “At this point I’m thinking about Oakland. I know this is the time when there are conversations about what coaches are going to return.

“For some reason I guess I get to fall into that category because maybe I’m closer to the same age as some of the coaches. But I have no plans along those lines. I’m enjoying playing and looking forward to Sunday’s game and the game to follow that.”

There was plenty of speculation prior to last year’s Super Bowl about his future, and whether he’d ride off into the sunset with a win. The Seahawks made that a moot point, but it will be interesting to see how long Manning hangs on.

  1. Maybe you’re closer to the same age as some of the coaches? Peyton, you’re three years OLDER than your offensive coordinator.

Ok, ok, so in actuality you’re three years older than the guy who gets PAID to be the offensive coordinator…

  2. I know Denver hasn’t done well at drafting and developing a QB.

Denver needs to have a plan in place, for when he does retire, other words they could go into a similar Post Elway slump.

I know they have Oswieler but I don’t know if he can play or not. So they may choose to draft another QB in the next draft.

  3. Most people already realize that Peyton won’t retire until he goes past Favre’s passing records (except the interception one of course) next season.

  4. He will struggle along next year as a shell of his former self for one last embarrassing season…eating up valuable cap space showing the greedy side that he hid in Indy…Peyton is about Peyton…if he wasn’t he would play for the league minimum and add players around him since he makes more $$ off the field than on the field…if a hero hangs around long enough he will become the villain

  5. There is a reason Peyton Manning only has one Super Bowl victory and that reason is Rex Grossman. If it wasn’t for Rex, Peyton Manning would have zero Super Bowl wins.

  6. Denver needs to start thinking about Plan B, and who’s going to take over from Manning. After seeing his slide the past five games, he might not even make it through a full season next year. Ostwheiler (?) isn’t the answer. The Broncos are going to be in Jets/Browns territory if they don’t start thinking about getting a future QB in place, and soon.

  7. As an NFL fan I hope he remains for next and more years to come. He isn’t finished and still has much to offer. Denver should look at drafting or signing his future replacement so that person can learn from one of the best of all time. If he retires, he will instantly be sought out as the top QB or Offensive Coordinator candidate. In ten years, he is a Head Coach somewhere………

  8. 39 Td’s 15 INTS. Lets get this out of the way, I’m a Bills fans. Now… I can’t believe the ridiculousness of the comments i’m seeing. At LEAST 26 teams in the NFL would drop their quarterback right now if it meant the chance to have Manning play for them. As a Bills fan… do you people have any idea what we would do for a QB like him? People on here make the most asinine comments based on their team allegiance, or jealousy.

  9. I haven’t read one word as to where over half the blame for the loss at Cincy belongs. Tackling. How many wiffs behind the line did they have? How many times was the stop there for the taking only to have 1,2, and 3 guys miss? Over and over, it was pathetic. If I didn’t know better I’d think they were throwing the game.

  10. Broncos would beg him to be back had he considered retiring.. they really have no plan B for QB.

  11. Manning was great the first 8 or so games. The last five and this next one… Not so much.

For Manning, it’s not about $ or numbers but wins and the Peyton on the field right now is more of a hindrance against good cover teams. His arm is done. If they win a game NE will murder their offense.

Peyton Manning is an all time great much like the others but like the others he’s past his expiration date. I’m glad it hasn’t happened to Brady yet.

  12. He’s fine. He just needs to learn how to work within the limitations of his age and waning arm strength. He’ll figure it out and not try to make throws he can’t make anymore. He may not get it down this playoff season but by next year he’ll be good as ever. He’s got a couple good years left if he plays smart and within himself.

There is a reason Peyton Manning only has one Super Bowl victory and that reason is Rex Grossman. If it wasn’t for Rex, Peyton Manning would have zero Super Bowl wins.

this is the dumbest argument ever. peyton played against the bears DEFENSE & that D was one of the best in the league that year. they were winning games by themselves when Grossman was trying to lose them (see the denny green meltdown)

  14. No problem, Peyton.

Goodell will just tell the Competition Committee to keep making the rules for what you can to do to the QB stricter so Manning can hang around as long as he likes.

I can see it now — “we have a penalty on number 99 of the defense, looking at the QB after crossing the line of scrimmage”….. “15 yards and first down, Denver”.

  15. Elway will cook up a deal and go after Brady. You really think Brady is going to play for 8mill/yr. for the next 3 yrs with the Pats. The weather doesn’t bother that guy and he still has the fire in the belly.

  16. He really should give it serious thought.

He has achieved all he is going to. He has more money than his family and grandchildren will ever need. He has plenty of outside ventures to keep him busy.

And most off all, at this point and with his injury history, he needs to be thinking about his wife and those small children at home.

You’ve been a football player and reached the ‘immortal Hall of Famer’ stage. Now go do it as a Dad.

You just made the point you thought you were disagreeing with. If Grossman hadn’t been incompetent, Manning would not have won the Super Bowl.

  18. …this is the dumbest argument ever. peyton played against the bears DEFENSE…they were winning games by themselves when Grossman was trying to lose them

You should try not to contradict yourself when pointing out the flaws in someone else’s argument especially when it reinforces the other guys point. SDMH

  19. Well this is not a stupid man, and ego or not he has enough people around him, family included, that if he were making a mistake by continuing to play they would all be telling him no. So would the Broncos. Maybe they won’t want him but all the haters (and btw I have never seen so manyhappy jealous people on this site barking at him) are not coaches or as smart as they think they are. So again put your crystal balls down and wait and see.

  20. Haters are Gonna Hate..

All Manning has done is win 3 straight AFC West Titles, win an AFC Championship, set the record for TD’s thrown in a season, set the all time TD record, make stars out of everyone he throws the ball too, including Eric Decker who went on to be a big flop with the Jets… and oh yeah, did it all AFTER missing a year because of neck surgery.

    Yeah,….clearly he’s done..

    Keep Hating Haters..

  21. If the Broncos do win Super Bowl 49 the question is would Peyton Manning decide that since he has no more mountains to climb, will he ride his horse into the sunset after this year ends? Something to think about. His legacy.

  22. He probably wants the “Jeter tour’ where opponents and their fans can honor him every game.

    ——————————————————–

For the Broncos to win Super Bowl 49 they will probably have to beat the Patriots in Foxboro and the Seahawks in the Super Bowl. I’m a big fan of Peyton Mannings but I don’t see that happening.

  24. From the article…

“Since all he has to do is hand off and throw interceptions…”

Of course Peyton, for his career, has the 16th lowest INT% in the history of the game.

    A. Rodgers is #1 and Tom Brady is #2 but it isn’t like Peyton is terrible in terms of number of int’s he throws… certainly not compared to all the men who have played QB in the NFL in its history.

Peyton is tied with Joe “all he does is throw interceptions” Montana for 16th lowest career INT% at 2.6% of their passes.

  25. If the Broncos make it to thew Super Bowl and win, It is almost a certainty Manning will retire.

If they make it and lose as badly as last year, the Broncos will say bye bye.

  26. Here’s the common problem …. and replace him with whom?

Not a great baseball fan so when I read how Mays played way beyond his useful days and made a fool of himself, I don’t think Manning is there yet but the team certainly changed things mid stream going from a passing to running game and they did that to protect his neck.

At some point they may very well say enough, time to move on. He sure went down easy the other night. I still think he is one good hit from a wheelchair.

  27. He has a contract for 2015. He should play out his contract. And do what Ray Lewis did. Proclaim “This is Peytons’s last ride”. And hope it rallies his team to send him out in a blaze of glory. Like the Ravens did. And BTW; The Broncos should give Osweiler a serious look in preseason 2015 and a few deliberate starts in the regular season. Give Peyton a few Byes to keep his arm fresh for the post season.

It’s not hating if it’s true.

This is a “what have you done for me lately” league. Signing Welker for big $$$ and letting Decker (a guy THEY drafted) leave were two big mistakes. And the longer Manning hangs around will further flush this franchise down the swirling vortex. Simply put – You can’t expect him to perform at 40 like he did when he was 32.

You honestly think he can continue to put up gaudy numbers for another five years? The hand writing is on the wall, and the Broncos have no backup plan. The end is coming in Denver, and a lot sooner than you think.

  29. You guys who back Peyton need to be real with yourselves.

His passes have no zip if he has to go outside the numbers. He has good stats but most of them come early in the season before he wears down. The game plan is designed for him to throw short routes 75% of the time.

That’s not jealousy speaking. He’s still sharp mentally. It’s all obvious though. He’s a shell of his old self.

  30. Manning has a noodle arm as of late and he does not look like…well…Peyton Manning. He is struggling and has thrown way too many interceptions. Maybe he is taking lessons from his brother Eli? Sooner or later, the Ponies are going to have to draft a franchise QB. I do not think it is Oswiler? They may be one and done in the playoffs.

  31. Full circle I guess. At the begining of the season Brady was “done”, now Manning is “done”. Newsflash, older QBs hit rough patches. They’re human, and still better than most QBs in the game. He may not be the same player he was (even last year), but he can still play well enough to lead his team to the playoffs where inevitably he will choke. But that last part has always been part of the package.

  32. As much as I hate Peyton Manning what’s the alternative for the Broncos? Start Osweiler or hope they can draft a franchise qb in 2 to 3 years? I can’t see that happening although the Broncos might want to have a talk with him about lowering his cap space so they can get some linemen to protect him because if the line is like it was in the Bengals game Peyton will be out of the NFL quickly.

Look at his STATS people. 40 TDs, 67% complete, and 4500 yards. How is that not exceptional? Why should he retire?
    ____________

Well he is pushing 40, he has had Cervical Fusion surgery. and there is more to life than football.

Its also hard watching one of the all time greats end on a sour note for football fans. Favre, a Gunslinger jumping around acting goofy, hangs around a season or two longer than he should.

Now football fans last memory of Favre happens to be that after the collapse of the HHH dome, is watching him getting crushed by a Bear on a cold TCF field, after throwing about 10 Tds and 20 INTs that season.

Packer fans always boo Vikings, but I think a lot of them would be willing to admit, after cheering for him for over 15 years, and even though he was wearing purple, it was still hard to watch an all time great go out the way he did.

  34. Manning will play as long as someone is willing to pay him, it’s all about the money.
