Report: Browns fine Johnny Manziel for being late for treatment

Josh Gordon isn’t the only high-profile player in trouble with the Browns.

Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel has been fined by the team for being late for treatment on his injured hamstring, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

That news was broken just hours after the Browns announced that Gordon is suspended for the regular-season finale for missing today’s walk-through practice. Manziel is on injured reserve and was not expected at the walk-through, but the report that he didn’t show up on time for treatment is concerning.

Manziel’s tardiness today comes just days after he vowed to take his work more seriously. Apparently taking work seriously doesn’t include showing up to work on time.

So now the Browns, at the end of a season that showed some promise, are ending the season on a low note: Their best offensive playmaker is such a troublemaker that his future with the team is in question, and their franchise quarterback doesn’t show up to work on time.

  1. It’s interesting to note the disparity in punishment when it comes to accrued seasons and restricted free agency… when they are both guilty of the same offense.

  2. The Homeless man who told the Browns to take Johnny Manziel over Teddy Bridgewater = Another prophecy fulfilled in the factory of sadness.

  3. I hope I’m wrong, but I bet I’m not, Manziel will be out of the league in 3 years….and everyone will be wondering how anyone could have ever drafted him with so many red flags.

  4. Not a big fan of Reggie McKenzie, but passing on this guy and taking Derek Carr might define his tenure as a GM. Sorry, Cleveland, you deserve better. I hope Manziel grows up quick for you.

I’m sure it’s because Manziel is already on IR while Gordon is still eligible to play. Also Gordon has a longer list of bad decisions

  6. As a fan, who was as excited as anyone about drafting Johnny Manziel to play, I am officially over him. His entire spiel about needing to take the NFL more seriously was absurd. Really? It took you this long to realize that you have to take your job, which pays you millions of dollars, seriously? That statement alone tells you that he will not succeed. And clearly he’s not taking it seriously.

What he showed on the field was worse than any other QB I’ve seen since 1999. And at this point Browns fans are experts at watching horrible QBs. He looks like the worst yet. Everything bad that people said about him is coming true right before our eyes.

A season that started with optimism again ends with QB questions. Whoever still believes that Johnny Manziel can be a playoff caliber QB is just biased. and please don’t give me the “Peyton Manning was bad in his first few games.” It not about the stats. It’s about the eye test. And Manziel clearly doesn’t belong

  7. After Conner Shaw lights it up Sunday, maybe Johnny won’t be the “franchise quarterback” anymore. What a joke.

  8. The Homeless man who told the Browns to take Johnny Manziel over Teddy Bridgewater = Another prophecy fulfilled in the factory of sadness.

It is that kind of Cleveland judgment that explains why the homeless guy is homeless and why Cleveland keeps electing politicians that cause their City to continue to decay and flounder.

If you want to fix Cleveland football move it out of Cleveland.

  9. It takes real gall for a Vikings fan to troll any other team (looking at you, poet). Along with the Jets, Titans, and Jags, the Vikings are the most irrelevant team in the entire league.

    0-4 Super Bowl.

    Empty Trophy Case.

  10. Re-sign Hoyer for a year. Let Hoyer and Johnny Football fight it out, alternative starts in pre-season. If you just hand the team over to ManSeal, the Browns sink back to 2 and 12.

  11. Good grief. How many people have been late for a doctors appointment? Johnny doesn’t make great decisions but this is a total non-issue. End of the season, on IR and late for an appointment. Why did a story need to be written about it? I’m sure it happens every day to other players on other teams.

  12. “Manziel Hours Late For Treatment of Broken Hand Incured Reaching For Slice of Pizza Outside of Bieber Mansion; Recieves Monster Fines from Befuddled Browns Org” is a future story I’m sure fans of all teams would love to see.

  13. “Character” is the $500 million word. Just what is character and what do you look for when you’re looking for good character guys? It seems like everyone wants good character guys, but very few understand what exactly good character is. Whoever is in charge of the Browns’ roster certainly doesn’t understand it.

  14. All the media hype on this kid… They made him what he is and now they are breaking him…..

Manziel should be out of football after 5 seasons with 3 different teams but that being said look at TJackson Ponder and he’ll Lindley is still playing

  15. Texas kids dont belong in cleveland, Manziel, Gilbert and Gordon all from Texas, I really hope Gordon and Manziel both leave Cleveland I really do, in 3 years Manziel will be a cowboy, and everyone in Dallas know it.

  16. So are we still going to hear people about writing him off after 6 quarters? It isn’t just about what he did on the field with this kid. He don’t get it, probably never will or at least it will be too late.

  17. I actually enjoyed watching The Browns earlier this year. I read all the comments from the fans of the other AFC north fans, and I got pretty sick of reading them. And as much as it pains me to admit this, most of them were right. For whatever reason, The Browns just can’t seem to get out of their own way.

    Patriots fan

  18. Give it enough time and Johnny Boy might be sharing a concrete abode with Ryan Leaf. They can then fight over the starting QB job in the local penal league.

  19. The Brownies should unload Johnny to the Cowboys now, while Jerrah still has a thing for him, and
before anyone from the Cowboys can overrule him.

  20. “It’s interesting to note the disparity in punishment when it comes to accrued seasons and restricted free agency… when they are both guilty of the same offense”..

the reason he has been suspended was because this was at the end of missing/being late to many practices and meetings.. sorry to debunk that conspiracy but make sure to get facts correct.

  21. Give it a break, “let him that is without sin, cast the first stone” Like everyone f you on here, that have a job, have never been late before to anything!

  22. Cleveland needs to give Manziel and Gordon their walking papers. I am so sick of watching my favorite team make poor decisions in the draft. Big Ben was in their backyard and they took Winslow. Manziel had lots of red flags – so Cleveland drafts him too soon (any fool can see he’s a 5th or 6th round QB). They give up on coaches too fast, so the team never has continuity – new offensive and defensive systems every other year. Examine good teams – Pittsburgh and New England. They dump bad players and stick with their coaches even if they have a bad season. Cleveland hits the reset button too often, and

  23. I feel bad for Browns fans that their team wasted a 1st rounder on this loser. But they should be encouraged that their team seems to be recognizing their mistake rather than enabling him.

  24. “Give it a break, “let him that is without sin, cast the first stone” Like everyone f you on here, that have a job, have never been late before to anything!”

    Give up the kool-aid

  25. when will people realize when this kid grew up spoiled by money, he doesnt have a work ethic.

    simple.

he has more money prior to his college career than most. nothing else matters and he just keeps proving himself……

  26. Man…there are seriously like 15 quality first round picks from this year and the browns didn’t take any of them with their two picks.

Watkins, Mack, Evans, Barr, ODB, Mathews, Mosley, Donald, James, Cooks, Fuller, Shazier, Carr in the second.

It’s hard to still be a browns fan

  27. Dear Mr. Farmer and Coach Pettine. I can throw a football a quarter mile. I bet I can throw a football over a mountain. I have hours of self-made videos showing my football throwing mechanics and mobility. Also, if coach would have put me in the game in the 4th quarter, we would have taken state…no doubt in my mind. I can be your franchise quarterback.

  28. I’ve followed the spoiled brat from Tivy High School, through A & M. When nothing changes, nothing changes.

  29. When has Manziel looked like even a mediocre NFL back-up quarterback? Never.

I do not understand the continuing press coverage he receives. The crew that drafted him may soon be gone and I doubt the Browns could give him away short of the waiver wire.

Johnny Manziel full of sound and fury signifying his lack of NFL talent. Not caring is just on the horizon……..

His new residence will be located at the corner of irrelevant and bust with a crossing street called blowhard.

  30. Good to be a Colt fan, huh? Luck suddenly looks average and Richardson gets under 3 yards a carry. The Colts will be in the same boat as Cleveland after the first round of the playoffs – sitting at home, waiting for next season.

  31. And he only continues to be a train wreck.

All those teams who passed on him should be awarded an extra 7th round pick for being smart enough to see right through this chump. He is quickly becoming part of the conversation of top 5 biggest QB busts of all time.

This guy is an immature overrated little punk who has way too much of a prima donna me-me -me attitude who brought in his moronic “rolling the bills” trademark move on draft day. Pathetic.

Cleveland still can’t get out of its own way with picks like this, and I was of this same mindset on draft day. When Dallas called out Zack Martin’s name instead of Johnny Bench, I clapped as loudly as humanly possible in my living room, and cheered the pick wholeheartedly. And we all know how that has worked out for Dallas, as well as Cleveland. Martin is in the running for ROY, and Manziel is by far leading the BOY (Bust of the year) category.

The only thing fortunate for Cleveland was this chump wasn’t drafted several years ago when 1st round QB’s were getting monster contracts for never having played a down in the NFL.

Cleveland has made their choice, and they are now dealing with the repercussions.

    Well, done Browns. Well done.

  32. He is in it for all the wrong reasons, doesn’t take it seriously and is a liability to that franchise. They’re not paying for you to be on your own schedule or do things as you see fit. Cleveland needs to do themselves a favor and give this guy to the first team that shows interest, or cut him Monday. Take your losses and move on.

  33. The way I see it is this–fans need to get the guy out of their systems instead of all the hoopla that has been going on for no real reason. He is nothing but a distraction and will take some down in the team with him with his partying ways.

  34. When many NFL greats were telling him to settle down and do football full time, JFF thumbed his nose at them. So many of us said his attitude would lead to poor play and his size would lead to injury. Right on schedule.

  35. Manziel’s version of “more dedicated, more professional”
Show up late for your treatment.

Nothing has changed, Manziel has zero credibility, nobody is going to believe a word out of his mouth, until his attitude and behavior changes.

  36. I have learned my lesson and pledge to take my job seriously. I have grown a lot this year. Whatever Johnny Leaf. Kind of like OJ saying he would not rest until he found the real killer before heading out to the golf course.

  38. Considering how bad the Rams QB situation has become, their “passing” on Manziel for Donald is a fortuitous positive. Sorry Cleveland, you deserve better. If not for the Browns, Rams would be the cursed franchise.

  39. Joanie Sommers & the Cleveland Browns sang:

    Oh, Johnny get angry
    Johnny get mad
Gave him the biggest lecture that he ever had
We want a brave man, We want a cave man
Johnny show us that you care, really care for us!

  40. Notice to PFT — Johnny Busto Manziel need not be the lead headline on your site.
He is nothing but a backup QB who had to play and played so badly, they didn’t have a QB rating low enough to give him.
Please — file anything with his name on it in the same drawer where the Ryan Leaf stuff is kept.

  41. Where else can someone get a job and then months later say they’re going to start taking the job seriously?????And then just a week later, miss a required function????? If Manziel were working in the real world, he’d have been fired already, several times over.

The Browns are a sad organization, even worse than the Raiders. If the owner is smart, he’ll fire the entire staff, then hire someone like Ron Wolf to go out and find him a good GM. Then he’ll get out of the way and let the GM have 5 years to start turning the organization around.

Even the Jets are getting wise, at long last. They’ve brought in Charley Casserly to find them a new GM.

  42. I can’t tell you how glad I am that my Vikings chose Teddy Bridgewater over Manziel in the draft. Manziel will be out of the league within a couple of years, I predict. Bridgewater, on the other hand, should have a long and successful NFL career. He works hard, keeps his mouth shut, and does what he’s supposed to do. Manziel is a self-absorbed clown.

  43. If the Browns can’t trade him they may want to cut him. You can’t have someone in the locker room who doesn’t care about the team.

Kind of reminds me of Maurice Clarett when he was cut in his first training camp.

  44. This guy thinks he is so smart but he is all kind of stupid. He is not a “franchise” QB and never will be. The Browns have been had again and Cleveland continues to be the “mistake by the lake”.

  45. i think there are just more and more young people who don’t think showing up on time is really that important. Really… for example, lady at work… comes in at 9… leaves at 4… maybe comes in at 10… seriously…

I have a job where I meet with numerous local businesses… many tell me they have big trouble trying to hire people… many can’t pass drug tests… some don’t stay.. the first day at work.. leave at lunch time and don’t come back…. that company ended up hiring ‘Amish’ ladies… he says they ain’t afraid of hard work.

and part time people think they need better ‘minimum’ wage… why do you think its ‘part time’ ? trouble is the 50% drop out rate of schools is really catching up to us. WOW… look where that went ! lol

And what the heck is in Gordons’ brain? where is his agent ? they should be baby setting this guy? every one wins then… you know, like the Cowboys did that one player..

I really hope Conner Shaw does great and even wins… I’m a Steeler fan but love that guy… wish we had a great 3rd string… a couple years we’ll be looking for a GREAT starter.

  46. Johnny MAN SMELL will be traded to the Jets and demand to wear the number 12 and to be called Broadway Johnny . He’ll turn NYC over on it’s ear next July with MAN SMELL MANIA .He’ll party like Namath did with Hollywood Starlets and throw ints just like Joe did. When the season starts his hubris will bring disaster upon the hapless Jets leading them to a 2-14 season. Then Johnny MAN SMELL will be cursed by the football Gods and dooomed to Oblivion and a NFL footnote forever.

    ———————————————————-
    Could happen. Shaw can play.

  48. He’s Jamarcus Russell with a better physique and less guaranteed money.

The Browns should draft a 3rd Rd QB or get a veteran that can take Manziel’s job away.

His future was in the toilet right after he flipped off the Skins defenders.

In fact (as crazy as this sounds) Hoyer’s stats were better before Josh Gordon came back. Based on that, getting rid of Gordon and Manziel, but re-signing Hoyer will actually do the Browns wonders.

  49. Manning, Rivers, Brees, Luck, Rodgers, Brady… None of these guys would pull something like this. Even as rookies.

    This Belieber-kid is a LOSER.

  50. so much for manziel taking his job more seriously; this is not college. so much for manziel being a team leader, since he’s the QB, and setting an example for other team members…i know he’s a rookie. aren’t there any seasoned vets on that team to straighten out these immature young guys, manziel and gordon, and teach them how professionals act? it is/has been time to grow up, and earn the paycheck they expect to receive! some peoples’ children…

  51. The kid needs to grow up for sure, and quick. I was indifferent when they took him but am still clinging to hope! If anyone else in the league was late it would’ve never made the news, NEVER! Give it a rest people, how can so many people just hate for the sake of hating? Get a life PLEASE! Oh and drop the homeless guy spiel as we’ll, LOSERS!

  52. I think Johnny’s already figured it out. He’s not big enough, fast enough, smart enough or good enough to ever become a starting NFL quarterback.

So he’ll stick around as long as he can to collect whatever millions are left in his contract with the Browns.

  53. Another self entitled player that the Browns fans gave their life to and he slapped you in the face with his actions this year. He says one thing and his actions do another.

  54. HIGHLY amusing that a very small number here think that my being late for the dentist is EXACTLY the same thing as Manziel being late for rehab.

If I have to explain to you that they are not even remotely the same, you are just too damn stupid to be entrusted with anything more complicated than a bubble pipe.

  55. Uh, isn’t this the SAME clown who FIRST said he had learned his lesson, then WHINED LOUDLY about a QB competition being “unfair” to him? LOL Ryan Leaf v2.0

  56. Forget the rolled up dollar bills in the bath room.
    Forget the party dude attitude.
    Forget the tardiness.
Forget the middle finger on national television.
Forget college play and boated draft rank.

Why on Earth would any NFL organization/team be so stupid as to draft a midget for their QB?!?!?!

That is the one that baffles me the most!

I mean i’m no coach, haven’t even coached little league. Even I know that’s a pretty moronic move unless, well…you want to be laughed at and lose all your games.

    Good grief!

They won a pair of Super Bowls, so I think it was worth it.

  58. Vikings fan here, but remember the vikes tried to trade up for Johnny football but the browns made a better offer! And the vikes took teddy! Sometimes the trades you don’t make are the best ones!!!!

  59. calling him “another tebow” is now officially offensive to tebow. at least he cared, at least he TRIED. at least he had a good game and won a playoff game when his team called upon him.

manziel is the kid who had so much talent he got by. now he is in a league full of guys with just as much if not more talent, and is totally lost. I don’t see it changing, we all know that mentality he has and we all know it takes time to grow out of that. time he really doesn’t have, he will be out of the league in no time.

  60. The NFL is a joke…players do what they want knowing they will get on another team and make millions more…suspend them for a year without pay and the team still has rights to them so they cant leave and this crap will come to a dead halt real quick

  61. Ms. Cabot, just who has named Manziel the “Franchise QB” for the Browns. All Pettine said was he’d be in the competition. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the franchise QB isn’t in the mix for competition, they have the job entering the offseason. That’s not Manziel’s status. If this action following his mea culpa on his season of not taking the job serious and not being prepared (see similar speech before the 2014 draft) means anything to Browns fans, it should mean he definitely “ISN’T” the Browns incumbent at starter for 2015. This clown simply doesn’t get it. He’s a spoiled, little frat boy rich kid who thinks he’s “entitled” to the Browns starting job because he’s Johnny Football! What a freaking joke!

  62. @aggiefanatic, Manziel didn’t just “show up”, the team had to go and find him! Gordon was the one who showed up late.

  63. My guess is Manziel is just scared to get hit again as hard as he has been. If he can get fired he can save face, literally and figuratively.

In any case that homeless guy shouldn’t drop his day job just yet.

  64. At first, I was like, “Wait…hold on a sec. I’ve been late to work and appointments without any disciplinary actions.” Then my brain clicked on and I realized that I’m not an NFL player who makes more money then I’ll ever see in my lifetime so yes I should be on time to rehab my injury. I’m not a Browns fan but I would like to see what he can do in a full season, BUT… I know there are a number of red flags on this kid and it’s a shame if he can’t grow up and realize that he’s got an awesome opportunity that very few have to try and be a franchise QB and is doing himself and the fans no favors by acting like this. Grow up kid and be responsible.

  65. I was rooting for the browns all season due to the fact i like seeing the bottom teams do well . that was until they decided benching hoyer was a good idea. but in manziels defense I do believe the loss to cinci wasn’t his fault. I have a feeling he was sabotaged by hoyer hiding his snickers. if his career continues like this at least he will be able to fall back on the fact that he had the highest selling jersey for a while. thank you Reggie for not drafting this chump. that being said best of luck next year browns!!

  66. Meanwhile the Bengals are headed to the playoffs for the fourth straight year. Who would have thought the Bengals would be the least dysfunctional team in Ohio. Who Dey!

  67. C’mon, Johnny is a 1st round draft pick, selected to be the face of his franchise and end the long streak of worthless QBs selected in the first round by Cleveland. So he’s late for meetings. So he parties. So he thinks he knows it all. I mean, look at Andrew Luck, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning. Those guys all do that stuff right? Oh…wait…guess not.

The sad think is the Browns knew all this.

  68. Well, if this is all problems about Johnny, then can somebody please explain why he was so good at Texas A&M? Two words: Mike Evans (now a Tampa Bay Buc).

  69. This all strikes me as high drama and gossip at the end of the year as a Rookie Head Coach comes to grips with low morale and immature players. If it was mid-season some of the Veteran players would take charge and hold a players-only meeting. As it stands, Coach Pettine is laying the groundwork for next year and after that. From that perspective it is a good thing.

From what I have seen every week from Pettine he should be OK in the long term, hopefully his superiors don’t make the same mistake that was made with Belichick and run him out of town.

Beyond anything else and any player(s) what the Browns really need is long term stability at Head Coach. With that in place the revolving door at QB will work itself out and the organization will be able to stand tall again.
