Bears take out ad thanking fans, says club “won’t make excuses”

On the final day of a most disappointing season, the Bears took out a full-page advertisement in the Chicago Tribune to thank their fans for their loyalty.

“We Won’t Make Excuses,” the team wrote. On the next line, the team said: “We Will Thank You For Your Support.”

The ad copy concluded: “We’ve got the best fans around, thank you Chicagoland.”

The Bears (5-10) play at Minnesota at 1 p.m. Eastern. Speculation has centered on the future of head coach Marc Trestman, and G.M. Phil Emery has also come under criticism as the team has faltered.

  1. How about some accountability? Less thanking people, more doing something about it. Tucker should have been gone a year ago.

  2. It’s funny because the Viking pretty much had just of bad a season but they’re claiming it was good one. just goes to show the respectability of a franchise.

  3. Both Trestman and Cutler are passionless and uninspiring. They seem to just go through the motions like zombies. Cutler performed horribly and needs to be held to account. I don’t think he’s a guy that elevates his play when faced with adversity. I think he’s only good when everything is going well. As for Trestman???…..zombieland. I just see absolutely nothing from him on the sidelines…nothing. I swear a flying saucer could land on the field in front of him and Martians toting ray guns get out and start blasting everybody and this guys demeanor would not change one iota. Not sure he’d even notice….

  4. Spare us. I’m sick of words . How about letting actions speak for you? Until I see Ted Phillips gone, your words cannot be taken seriously. It has to start there !

  5. The Wirtz family? Are you kidding me? Bill Wirtz held the team hostage for decades…home games weren’t even on local TV. It wasn’t until after he died the team actually did something and most of that credit goes to Bowman.

  6. @backindasaddle…are u serious?Have u taken a look at Trestman lately? He looks just like the martian on the spaceship u speak of…dude is hella strange looking.

Dale Tallon rebuilt the Blackhawks. Stan Bowman made a huge mistake with player contracts as an assistant GM but because his father is one of the most famous people in hockey instead of getting fired, he got promoted. His boss got the axe after the draft and free agency was done. In other words Stan was in charge of nothing until all the decisions were made. After the work was done, he was promoted and got credit for the work his boss did.

  8. Last game of the year for the Vikes…again. Soon the Superbowl preseason will begin again when they can claim to be good.

Hate the one and done all you want….but you would kill do do it more than once a decade.

Go Bears…. go out with a win

  9. They want to thank the fans? LOSE the game. Secure a higher draft pick at #7 (#6 is possible IF the Redskins miraculously win). Secure the house cleaning that is necessary (Ted Phillips on down).

————————————————————————————————- not a bears fan but couldn’t agree with you more about viking fans. they like to talk about how other teams cant win in the postseason yet they haven’t won a playoff game in like 10 years.

  11. I had thought at the beginning of the season, this game today would have had playoff implications on the line for the bears. Win and in, for a wildcard spot. But i was way wrong.

    ==========================================

Rocky Wirtz, his son, orchestrated the regime change after the death of his father, hence….WINNING !

  13. @eagleswin

Wrong. Dale Tallin was fired because he made mistakes on several players and contacts. As the GM, those contracts were his responsibility. Period. Him screwing up RFA contracts got him fired, and he deserved it. The Blackhawks won a Stanley Cup after a pretty massive roster overhaul done by Bowman. Yes the core was there, but the depth changed a ton, and depth had a huge impact on them winning it again. And the entire thing took place under a Wirtz. Rocky may be the complete opposite of his Dad, but he is still a Wirtz. And that overhaul cannot be understated.

The Bears sure seem to need to press the reset button. There are about 10 starters that seem like keepers on both sides of the ball combined.

  14. Please spare us the PR spin. Actions speak much louder than words, and talk is cheap – almost as cheap as the Bears’ ownership.

We’ll know next week how serious the Bears organization is about improving the team, but my guess at this point is they’re not serious: Ted Phillips will remain as president, and Phil Emery will remain as GM. Trestman may or may not return – but with Phillips and Emery in charge it’s unlikely they’ll find any coach that’s an upgrade… who would want to join this circus?

The Bears need a complete reset from the top to the bottom of the organization, but ownership seems unable or unwilling to recognize this, and act accordingly. The best thing for the Bears, their fans and the city of Chicago would be for the McCaskeys to sell the franchise.

  15. In regards to Blackhawks resurgence and how it might apply to
    The Bears.
Rocky Wirtz took over, because the other son, Peter
Could not bring himself to stand up to his father
Ever after his father died, he couldn’t bring himself to undo
and correct all the things Bill had done wrong,
so he turned it over to Rocky who knew a total rehaul had to be done and some things changed immediately, like home games on TV.
Then he hired John McDonnaugh away from the Cubs, put him in charge and got out of the way. It was and is John McDonnaugh who was the key to the transformation from worst franchise in sports to the best over these last 7 years. He changed the structure of the front office and brought in many new people and new doubts, talent evaluators. Dale Tallon was here and made good contributions to the the rebuild, but did also make some key mistakes that put them more heavily into a salary cap bind. John McD, then had the courage to make the tough decisions, replacing both Dale Tallon and then Denis Savard to get to the next level. And yet he did it with class, providing them both with jobs in the organization at their same pay. John McD had been the key to this transformation.
The Bears need one of the McCaskey’s to step forward and find their own version of John McDonnaugh or Theo Epstein. Then, get out of the way and let whoever that is completely overhaul that organization. Including letting some of their kids, grandkids go or kicked to the side if there are better people available for their positions. Can’t be running this like a family business or Mom and Pop operation into today’s sports world.

  16. They need a whole new front office. I’m just not sure who they should hire, there hasn’t been a single front office name mentioned that seems remotely capable of the job. The ones mentioned have either been washed up or Jerry Angelo proteges.

I’d think really hard about looking for a good coach and getting their inout on a GM. I’d be really happy if we hired Rex, he’d do wonders in my opinion.

  17. Also, big props to Rocky Wirtz recognizing the error in his father’s ways and putting the right management team in place to capitalize on the drafting of Toews and Kane.

Ted Phillips has had plenty of opportunities to get a competent football guy in charge. He doesn’t deserve another. I hope the Bears find the right man or men fo the job this time.

  18. McCaskey’s – however my continued support is dependent on what changes you make starting Monday.

More than small changes are needed.

Let’s see if you have what it takes to manage an NFL team. If not, I now live in Denver. The Bears can drop to my second team of choice.

  19. The McCaskeys need to make some major changes, or they will start to see a lot of empty seats next year. Show how much you appreciate you fans by getting better coaching staff and a QB that can play .You made a major purchase on Cutler, and got nothing from him, cut him loose and get a QB that can play . This is the worst year that I recall for the Bears, something has got to change.

  20. How about we let Trestman choose his own DC and QB?….and let him at least start over with the detractors Tillman Gould and Briggs gone…they never bought in from day one talking about this isn’t the bear bs…they were suppose to be the leaders of this team and they let us down…you had new guys coming in and stepping up more than they did…

  21. Belichick is just as unemotional as Trestman, yet you want to blame Trestman’s flat demeanor as an indication that he’s uninspiring. Joe Flacco won a Super Bowl, and he has the personality of a cow.

Let’s stop making judgments of the suitability of coaches and players based on their demeanor.

I think we want to believe we have the players, but we don’t. Cutler has never been first tier, the line has regressed, the defense has only 2-3 good players, when it needs 9 good players, and the WR’s are slow.

  22. First and fore most Trestman is nothing but a troll and a tool!! He needs to go back to Canada and teach flag football!! Secondly who ever decided to pay that bit$h Cutler $140.000.000 a year not only are they extremely stupid but they need to be put on some desert island with twitchy MaGee and feed dog Sh$t!! Thirdly who ever said 7th in the draft pick was good is a complete moron. Hell they should have went 0- 16 so they could have the number 1 Draft pick!! Fourthly you do not fire or refuse to pay or renew contracts on the players WHO MEAN SO MUCH TO THE CHICAGO FANS YOU DUMB ASSES!!!! Finally it is time for change for not only the team as far as players but the coaching staff needs to be picked through with a fine tooth comb also the FRONT DESK needs to be sorted through and fired and contracts need to be broken and peoples asses like or are as worthless as Jay Culter and Trestman need to have their bags packed because they are nothing but POISON TO THE TEAM OF TEAMS if they could just get a overall staff that wanted to WIN and go after the GOAL of WINNING A DAMN SUPER BOWL!!!!!!!

  23. How many Bears were arrested this year? 0. How many were suspended? 0. They’re Altar boys. Now let’s get rid of the Priests (Trestman, Tucker) Take the hat off the Bishops (Emery) head, and go back to prayer and a vow of poverty (Cutlers contract).
