No deal yet between Michigan and Harbaugh

What will happen, will happen. What will not happen, won’t happen.

It’s one of 49ers (for now) coach Jim Harbaugh’s current catch phrases. And it’s an accurate summary of the current status of his flirtation with his alma mater.

Amid multiple reports that Harbaugh will return to the college ranks and become the next Michigan coach, Michigan alum Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that there’s no deal yet between Michigan and Harbaugh.

It could be a formality, given that Harbaugh still has a job — at least until 7:30 p.m. ET or so tonight. Or it could be that Harbaugh is still waiting for the Raiders or some other NFL team to come to the table with a competitive offer, the kind of offer that finally moves the top of the NFL coaching market upward, after a decade of stagnation.

Regardless, what will happen, will happen. According to Schefter, nothing has happened yet.

  1. The Michigan job has to be a smokescreen. It seems there will be PLENTY of job openings in the NFL by this time next week. Why not wait it out and see what else is out there?

  2. Harbaugh to Michigan has been a rumor for months! It is obvious someone leaked info. What a surprise it will be when he gets axed tomorrow and signs with Michigan!

  3. More importantly the Niners are headed for the basement. Gore is leaVing, no deal yet for Crabtree, and Mr. Khakis himself Is returning to college. Yet they are keeping Kaep and a gm that can’t draft. I respect die hard fans of any fanbase, but prepare for the bandwagoneers to jump onto the afc finalist. Pats, Broncos, Steelers, ….

  4. One story says there is a verbal deal in place, now a story says nothing is in place.

The man still has a job. How about letting him finish it before placing him somewhere else!

  5. It makes absolutely no sense for him to accept the Michigan job before he hears all of the NFL offers.

  6. He knows he can’t win in the nfc for at least 3 more years since Seattle will be conference champs for the foreseeable future. Oakland is possible, I know he likes Carr and some of those pieces in Oakland.

  7. The only thing I am curious about at this time is how fast fast the team dumps him and how.

It would be funny if they had HR pack up his office during the game. Won’t happen. But it would be funny as hell.

Now, the Bears – they might actually do it. . . . .

  8. Meanwhile, qualified minorities are being passed over and not even being given a shot.

None of the Teams/Programs being linked to Harbaugh are even pretending to have an interest in a minority candidate.

    Shameful.

  9. Adam Schefter says one [ ONE ] source says the deal is not done. There has to be a thousand sources that say the deal is done. It’s done. The 49ers want Harbaugh on the sidelines today as HC so they don’t have to go through the process of making Tomsula the interim HC for three hours. It will be OFFICIALLY done sometime this evening.

It’s called the Rooney Rule. Check in to it. The NCAA doesn’t have an equivalent rule. This is a problem that needs to be addressed.

It would be a courtesy not to confuse the Niner Faithful with the Seahack bandwagon, you know the fans that never existed prior to 2012 and the ones who did wore paper bags.

  13. What a racist idiotic comment no minorities have been interviewed, They hired a firm a and we all dont know who they have talked to.
There are more and more black coach’s in the NFL and NCAA and those numbers are continually going up. Lets be proud that things have changed for the better and drop the affirmative action mentality and pointing fingers. People like you make it worse not better.

  14. Why the hell would Harbo even consider Oakland (except for his demanding wife who wants to stay in the Bay). Raiders don’t pay coaches (ask Jon Gruden) and they are the most dysfunctional organization in the history of professional sports.

Being a Raider is going to the rock pile of broken dreams. It is the cemetery, land fill of the NFL!

you mean the Niner Faithful who needed to be given instructions on how to cheer for their team?

  16. Let’s be honest, the best college coaching positions are better than the best NFL coaching positions. The money is equal or better and there is no need to worry about drafting players. Just go out and recruit. Plus, the job security is superior.

The only reason to leave a top notch college team would be to stay a town or two ahead of the posse. Isn’t that right, Cheat, uh, I mean Pete.

  17. In a spark of their true genius, York/Baalke will hire Jack from Jack in the Box as head coach to continue their current trend–they will shoot for the number 1 draft pick in 2016.

  18. When it comes to Jim Harbaugh and/or the University of Michigan, people like John U. Bacon, Gregg Henson and Jeff Moss are much, much more reliable than the NFL blowhards that have been living in denial and hiding behind their false pride.

Davis has saved enough money on haircuts to pay Harbaugh what he wants, or close to it. And he has already offered Gruden whatever he wants to come back.

OK I’ll bite. Name one minority candidate that UM interviewed prior to settling on Harbaugh?

    Take your time. I’ll wait.
