Lions players have Suh’s back as he appeals suspension

Getty Images

Ndamukong Suh will get his chance to appeal his suspension for stepping on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

But his teammates are already weighing in, saying that years of bad behavior aren’t a factor.

We’re frustrated by the whole situation,” defensive end Darryl Tapp said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “Like I said, we don’t feel like it was intentional. We all know what kind of person Suh is. He hasn’t been in any kind of trouble this year, so just something we got to take it as it comes and move forward.”

Lions players were watching film getting ready for the Cowboys when coach Jim Caldwell pulled Suh out to tell him about the suspension, then telling his teammates.

Suh does have the benefit of having an appeal before Ted Cottrell, who overturned Ed Reed’s suspension in 2012.

Some of his teammates tried to defend the step as accidental, but with Rodgers dealing with a well-publicized calf injury, that seems too coincidental to be believed.

The Lions can only hope Cottrell buys it.

  1. Of course they do. They want to win, and he helps them do that. That’s why decisions like these are left to adults.

  2. Rodgers has all the talent in the world, but he’s a cry baby who has been carted off the field for a quad injury.is it a joke?

  3. We all know what kind of person he is too so he no longer deserves the benefit of the doubt.

  4. Of course they support him, they all do the same stuff but don’t have every camera on them. Dirtiest team in sports history. Something about that city…

  5. He will get his chance to plead his case and if the ruling is not in his favor then everybody just needs to appreciate the situation as an opportunity to overcome a bigger challenge. There is great pride available in focusing to play their best without letting this case distract them from the goal. It would be nice to see him allowed to participate in this playoff contest, but they don’t have to have him to win.

Maybe this Sunday it will be time for the Offense to step up and show what they can do when they are needed the most to be their best.

  6. JJ Watt would not have been suspended for that. If the act is worthy of a suspension then you punish him accordingly based on his history. But if the act is questionable based on who is involved then the suspension looks like a prejudice witch hunt.

  7. Yes, you’re correct in your assumption. Suh definitely orchestrated the whole thing. He’s been planning to stumble onto Rogers for weeks, there’s absolutely no way that it was an accident. Suh is the Rube Goldberg of attempted injuries, if you look closely at the play you can see the candle burning the rope. This story is an overblown joke……

  8. Suh has played his last game for Detroit as a Lion. Time to move on. His uncontrolled play got old his rookie season. This incident looked intentional even if A Rodgers doesn’t get an Oscar for that acting performance.

  9. “Some of his teammates tried to defend the step as accidental, but with Rodgers dealing with a well-publicized calf injury, that seems too coincidental to be believed.”

Very coincidental! Especially because he has eyes in the back of his head, saw exactly what he was doing, and even with the second step I don’t see how he could have had any clue whatsoever where he was putting his feet.

  10. If Ted Cottrell buys that Suh “accidently” lifted his right foot off the ground to put his entire weight on the left foot he obviously knew was stepping on someone (very likely Rodgers and the injured calf Suh obviously was aware of), Ted Cottrell needs to be fitted for a drool bucket. The best chance for Suh to win his appeal is to convince Cottrell it is not suspension worthy to step on an injured QB laying on the ground…which seems like a longshot to me but what do I know about NFL disciplinary process?

In the end, it won’t matter. The Lions run defense is not as good as advertised. The Packers chewed them up on the ground. The Cowboys run the ball better than the Packers. And then there is the little matter of Stafford taking on O fer when playing teams with winning records on the road.

The Lions have proven time and again they do not know how to channel their energy into positive results when faced with adversity. Instead they let their frustration get the best of them with “leaders” like Suh and Raiola. One and done is in the cards for the Lions with or without Suh. They simply lack the character required to win in the playoffs.

  11. Suh will never change. This is apparent. He has a chance to win his appeal because you can’t take him out of a playoff game for something like this. Besides Dallas has the best o line in football. Detroit needs their d line first rounders against Dallas’ o line first rounders.

  12. If you don’t think it was intentional, you’re a Lions fan or a Packer hater.

I never hope for injury, because 99.999% of these guys have families and deserve the money they make.

In Suh’s case, he just doesn’t get it, and he tries to end careers. I hope someone takes out his knees every time he plays, until he is hurt so badly he can never play again.

    That’s what he deserves.

  13. RODGERS……………..MAN UP ALREADY. YOU FAKED THE WHOLE INJURY TO BEGIN WITH. GETS CARTED OFF AND THEN RUNS OUT FOR 3RD QUARTER…..MUST HAVE MET REGGIE WHITE AT HALFTIME

Ever hear of the Raiders or Steelers of the 1970s?

  15. Suh deserves everything that happens to him going forward. The man is an absolute MORON! If he had any respect for himself or the game, he would conduct himself differently. Here is wishing him a washed up career somewhere other than Detroit. Suh, you suck, take Raiola with you. You’re both MORONS!

  16. Would we be having this discussion if Mr Suh had succeeded in breaking Mr Roger’s leg? Because an assault does not lead to significant injury, it is still an assault. What is the message to the children if the only time a vicious attack is punnished is when the victim sustains debilitating injury?

Whether you are a fan of the Lions or just a football fan, the pattern of conduct for Mr Suh and Mr Raiola is clear. I believe the solution lies with the NFL publically informing the players that (1) future attacks that appear intentional (in the sole judgment of the NFL) will result in a full year suspension without pay or credit toward free agency; (2) any attack that results in injury to another player will result in a suspension without pay or credit to retirement or free agency of the greater of two years and the length of time the injured player is off the field; (3) any team that employs the player will be required to video all practices and provide for individual video of the player during any games and inform the NFL of any suspect conduct (failure to do this will result in potential loss of draft picks).

This will stop the attacks or it will remove the attackers from the field.

It’s time for the NFL to stop supporting this “boys will be boys” mentality. The attack on Mr Rogers, the stomp by Mr Riola and the paltry response by the NFL has undermined the entire “No More” campaign. When will they learn to lead instead of react?

  17. romoisgod????? the guy is the biggest choker in the world. if the lions were playing any1 else I wouldn’t give them a chance. but with a loser like romo a win is very real. romo will throw 2 picks in the fourth quarter. it is what he does. romosucks.com

  18. I give Suh credit for trying to clean up his act the last couple of years. Maybe the NFL did too because he got off rather cheaply on this one with only one game.

  19. Lets say it was an accident. He should be smart enough to turn around and react concerned so that he wouldn’t get flagged or fined or suspended.

If something is an accident than act like it. Even If you only want people to believe it was an accident ACT like it.

  20. Hope he plays. It will be a better game to watch if he does. And the people “fit for a drool bucket” are the people who think in someway this reflects all the people of Detroit and or MI, sports fans can be a special kind of stupid sometime.

  21. I think he has earned the time out based on past issues no doubt.

…with that being said I wonder if this would be a huge issue if had been Kyle Orton or Charlie Whithurst’s ankle that he stepped on?

  22. lowriderfxr-
JJ Watt also wouldn’t have been man handled at the point of attack all game by a rookie center. Watt is on another planet. Oh yeah, and he doesn’t have a history of spiking people.

  23. “deneb1973 said:

What is the message to the children if the only time a vicious attack is punnished is when the victim sustains debilitating injury?”

assault? really? Then Rodgers should have a one game skirt wearing penalty for that handslap to Suh’s butt. What kind of example is that for children????

  24. @emmonsh
your hating is getting real old. Romo earned his money this year…choker?? don’t think so. Did Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, Jay Cutler earn there big contract money?..don’t think so

I’m thinking Lion fans would love to have Romo as there QB

  25. You can always tell the people that have played football compared to the sit at home noobs that just make idiots of themselves. Under no conditions or circumstances does he deserve a fine and or a suspension. Only a total moron would think that he does.

    ==========================

Perhaps if the thick layers of denial about Suh’s intentions were not emanating from the Lion fanbase so heavily, the city and state might not be painted with such a broad brush.

Of course, there is a small minority of Lion fans that get Suh is a dirtbag and willing to say so. So the absolute qualifier you use (“all the people…”) does certainly fit, Erin. Kudos for picking at the edges of the issue. I mean, it is so original to attack the most extreme positions as, well, extreme. Excellent debate skills you possess.

  27. @Hscorpio I’m trying to understand how lacy gashed the lions? Almost 30 carries just to hit 100… lowest ypc he’s had since week 10? Sounds like Roger Goodell logic to me … and for suh no matter what the opinion any one has as far as him doing it on purpose it doesn’t matter this is professional sports you can’t go on opinion you go on proof. They are saying he’s suspended for not turning around and apologizing or acknowledging what he did… so players get suspended now for not caring about others feelings?

  28. “You did not respond in the manner of someone who had lost his balance and accidentally contacted another player who was lying on the ground,” NFL vice president of football operations Merton Hanks said in a letter to Suh. “This illegal contact, specifically the second step and push off with your left foot, clearly could have been avoided.

“You unnecessarily stepped on your opponent’s unprotected leg as he lay on the ground unable to protect himself.”

Hanks played for several years in the NFL at a Pro Bowl level, hardly a sit at home noob, like yourself.

  29. The nation thinks Suh is a dirty player, but that’s because of one stupid play a few years ago and then this one that has become so overblown it may even cost the lions their season. In reality he is actually a stand up guy and a huge part of this organization and has brought a work ethic to an organization that pushes everyone else to be better, and it has worked. He doesn’t only make his teammates better by taking on double teams every play, but by pushing them to work harder everyday in practice. He’s an introverted, quiet, intelligent and well-spoken guy…so tired of the media trying to demonize him especially when it manifests into him missing the Lions’ biggest game of the last 20 years.

  30. “Under no conditions or circumstances does he deserve a fine and or a suspension. Only a total moron would think that he does”
    ———-
right you are, guy with “detroit” in his username

  31. Anyone who wants to defend Suh and argue this was unintentional needs to think about the last time they stepped back on to something unexpectedly. If that’s never happened, then try recreating the incident. It won’t be perfect because you are expecting it. Get something as high as a leg (stack of books, your friend’s leg…) on a flat surface. Now step back on it. The initial surprise of having your foot hit sooner instinctively causes the foot to move forward again and throws your body weight forward. What never instinctively happens is to put the foot parallel with your other foot so that you can step back onto the foreign object with your other foot. I might have bought the first step was unintentional. No way the second one is.

  32. I think not only is warranted, but that it should also be upheld.

Raiola was suspended for 1 game for intentionally stepping on someone just the week before. In Suh’s case, I am willing to give that the first step back was an accident, then he stepped back with the other foot, put all of his weight on his right put and pushed off. That is not indicative of someone who is off balance. More to the point, there is no way he could not have know that he was stepping on something, if he was off balance OR accidentally stepped backward off balance, he would’ve looked back, and even if he didn’t, he would’ve when he felt Rodgers hit him.

Suh in the past has stated that while in the game he is a much different person than when off the field. He has also has made aspersions that he wants to win and will do almost anything to that end.

Did Rodgers play it up, maybe, but then again something that flagrant almost warrants it. Do I think he got special treatment, yes but not because of who he is but because of what he is a QB. The rules protecting QBs are ridiculous anymore.

Suh’s suspension is in accordance with a similar act just recently. And no matter what anyone says, this suspension also has to do with past acts. Suh has shown and set a pattern of dirty acts. It is not unreasonable to think that after this one that he would get suspended.

Personally, I think he got off light. I am not a Lions or Packers fan, however if I saw a player do that to one of my players I would feel the same way as the Packers.

  33. Doesn’t matter whether they have Suh’s back or front… They better watch out or they could get stepped on too!

  34. Suh is either a very angry, and uncontrollable person… Or he’s a KLUTZ!!!!

Which one is actually believable? I know I have a hard time believing he’s a klutz!

  35. The suspension should be overturned because T.J. Lang grabbed Suh by the v-neck, causing him to fall back into Rodgers. If Suh gets fined, then Lang should be fined too.

  36. The first one …ok maybe but the second one he knew what he was standing on and then push off…Desreves to be on the bench…

  37. Who’s the dim whit who said “J.J. Watt wouldn’t have gotten suspended”? First of all, J. J. Watt wouldn’t do something like that! He respects the game too much and isn’t a dirt bag. Plain and simple!!!

Unless their IQ is 75 or below, they know it was intentional.

    —————–

So, in other words, every single member of the Detroit Lions squad, and 7/10 members of the coaching staff.

I wish I could like this comment twice.

  39. @ halldanj an intelligent, well spoken, stand up 300+ pound guy wearing cleats would apologize after stepping on someone twice, especially if it were an accident. A smart guy would have known the cameras would be on him–it was a huge game for the Lions, Packers and FOX. A sportsman would have turned around and helped the guy up–I bet if he had done that, there’d be no suspension. turn around, say ‘sorry, man’, help him up, everybody thinks ‘it was an accident’. Simple as that.

Suh may very well be an angel off the field, but he remains one of the most fined and penalized players in the league, and was voted, at least twice, by other NFL players (not the fans, not the media, other players) as “dirtiest player”.

  40. oh stop. they can try to make it out like it was an unintentional late hit, I am sorry, I have never seen ANY DL from teams I watch do this type of stuff. let alone frequently. it gets to where you have a rap sheet full of shady behavior.

anyone who has wore cleats knows very well you react when you step back onto someone, let alone when they wail in pain, to do a non chalant ” I don’t notice” just sells the fact even more that you did notice, and you had no problem trying to crush a man’s leg for playing the QB position.

I would throw him out of the league the next time he does anything even close to this.

  41. lions fans acting like merton hanks has no clue….just stop, you are making it worse. Hanks had a fantastic reputation. anyone who watched him knows how great of a ball hawk and an overall clean player he was. one of my favorite defensive backs of all time, and I am not a 49er fan.

  42. If it wasn’t intentional he would have reacted after he did it. The fact he acted like he wasn’t there shows he knew what he did.

  43. ‘I think I’m stepping on something. Let me put my full weight on it before I step off’. Any NORMAL person would not have lifted their right foot entirely off the ground before putting it back down and stepping off the object, namely Rodger’s leg, with their left foot.

He deserves whatever punishment he gets. He is just a plain dirty player.

  44. When I saw the clip I didn’t think anything of it and felt it was an accident. As soon as I saw it was Suh I felt it was intentional. Even if it was a legitimate accident, there’s enough precedent with him that it is now fair to assume the worst in these situations. Sorry Suh, you’ve done too much in the past and now you’re paying the price. No one to blame but yourself …

  45. hscorpio says:

The Cowboys haven’t run the ball better than GB since the 2nd half of the season started.

  46. I’m not a Detroit fan or a Su fan but I fail to see how he’s required to “watch” where he steps. Isn’t it Roger’s responsibility to MOVE, as long as it wasn’t a stomp or kick, (it wasn’t). A football player has no choice but to walk on the field he’s on, he shouldn’t have to be looking down.
I agree that Rogers is a crybaby, I heard ESPN commentators saying he won the MVP by playing w/ a bad quad, BOOHOO. Romo’s played w/ punctured lung and other “REAL” injuries and has been a MUCH better QB down the stretch. That’s okay tho, we’d MUCH rather have the Super Bowl WIN after we go the frozen tundra and show Rogers and the pack what REAL MVP’s look like.
    GO COWBOYS

  47. I am a Cowboys fan but I totally disagree with condemning a whole city over the actions of one or two players on a FOOTBALL team. That’s right, a football team playing a GAME. I’m as big a fan of my team as the next person, but get real people. It’s a game played by grown men making millions of dollars. Not a life and death situation. Will I be upset if the Cowboys lose? Of course I will. This is about a guy that doesn’t understand the meaning of fair play or sportsmanship and has demonstrated that time and time again. It has nothing to do with the city of Detroit. And for the moron who continues to keep bashing Romo, evidently you haven’t been paying attention to what he has been doing this past NFL season. Oh and by the way he is also 4-0 in the month of Dec. Yeah that’s right Dec. You know the month that he usually “chokes” in. And he has the highest QB rating in the entire NFL. Not just the NFC, the entire NFL. So when you start using words like suck and choke, I suggest you learn what they mean first. Take a look in the mirror that might help. Go Cowboys!!!!!!

  48. @WIILDMAN

You sir are delusional. Romo a much better QB down the stretch? One playoff win and numerous December choke jobs?

Rodgers has a ring Romo is a choker. Those are facts/

  49. If everyone just lived in the past there would be no future. So all the haters keep bringing up Romo’s past because he has continued to prove all the haters wrong game after game. And THOSE are the “facts”..

  50. So both the former VP of NFL Officiating (Pereira) and the head ref (Walt Anderson) who was ON THE FIELD for the play and saw the whole thing happen did not see any clear intent.

Slow down any video, watch it a thousand times, and you’ll see whatever you want to see.

    RIDICULOUS

  51. How many players have lost games due to Suh “try(ing) to end careers”? Oh, yeah it is zero.

I am not going to chastise or defend Suh for that play as I do not know what his intent was.

However, I think it is appalling to wish a crippling injury on anybody. Even worse nearly 200 keyboard tough guys agree. SMH

  53. Pereira and Polian both think the suspension is overkill and reactionary. They both think it will get overturned today. We shall see I guess.

But it’s good to see some people still have some objectivity. Now we find out if the appeals process actually is legitimate. It’s been years since anything was overturned.

  54. tokyofilthblaster says:

I’m thinking that the suspension gets overturned. Nobody wants to knock the Lions out of the playoffs over this.
Except the NFL, which has already begun pumping up an “Ice Bowl Rematch” but I don’t think any of the players in that game will play.
The chances of Cottrell overturning anything from his employer are roughly the same as taking 2 firecrackers, a piece of pipe and a battery and putting them in the pipe and hitting the moon.

  55. oes it really matter Lion fans? You can continue with your delusional rants but you cant ignore the obvious video. Eight prior acts that he was fined or suspended for kind points to lack of credibility. As far as queen fans what else could someone expect, they once again had a dismal season and were swept again by the Packers so they are a little butt hurt.

Like Suh is going to make a difference anyway, he couldn’t even handle a rookie center much like his losing it a few years ago when he stomped on EVS after getting manhandled. He is a mental midget.

  56. Suspension will never stick. This is an absolute joke. Rodgers and Co. were lobbying for a suspension immediately after the game and that’s the only reason this was anything more than a fine…

  57. Even if it was intentional…..it’s not worth a game. This is about media darling Aaron Rogers looking upset on TV. Stuff like this happens all the time during games. Or Rogers hadn’t thrown his little fit no one would have said a thing. This is a big nothing.

When is the last time you saw a suspension passed down in less than 24 hrs?

  58. Let him come back, I want 0 excuses when Dallas runs the ball down Detroits throat. But then we will hear how the game is fixed. I mean seriously, if the game is so rigged, why are half of y’all even watching let alone following it online.

The reality is, Detroits offense has limped into the playoffs. In December the lions have been anemic at best. And now they play Dallas, who has been on Fire since Thanksgiving. This won’t be close due to Detroits inability to put 7 on the board consistently.

  59. This is the first time in YEARS that the fair-haired child Dallas Cowboys are in the playoffs and the NFL is just making sure that the deck is stacked in their favor.

    _______________________

Suh has shown that he doesn’t need much time to take a cheap shot, Look at when he thrust his foot into Schaub’s groin area. He did that practically on the fly, he didn’t care where he wound up hitting him, Suh just wanted to cause him discomfort. Much like he did with Rodgers, he knows he is on someone and doesn’t give a care, all those things took him less than a second to do.

When he has more than a second to think about his cheap shots they are far more over the top, such as his bottle opener body slam on Delhomme, or his dribbling of EDS’s head followed by a stomp attempt.

Suh is an AMAZING athlete, part of the reason he is so great is that he possesses the speed, agility and body control is rarely seen in people his size. Which may be why he thinks he can get away with some of those moves, but most people can see right though it.

  61. 1st: for all of those saying that Rodgers is faking, take a look at the name on the jersey, it does not say Cutler.
2nd: looking at the tape, he deliberately picked up his foot in order to put the weight on the opposite while stepping back.
3rd: Rodgers CAME BACK into the game and threw a td. that is not faking, just good sportsmanship.

  62. First of all, anybody who’s anybody can see that Rogers is at fault. Rogers and the linemen were trying the oldest trick in the book. “The I’ll kneel down behind him and you push him over me”. it just back fired and Roger’s squealed like the little girl he is…

Second, if you think this or something worse doesn’t happen on every play in football, yes I said football, not the NFL, not College, not High School, but FOOTBALL in general, you’ve got another thing coming. Have any of you Football Hero’s ever heard of the war stories that are a pig pile or fumble recovery??

And to all you Cheeseville cheeseheads….if you think Suh is dirty? I ask you to look at some old film on Reggie. The king of the head slap, an illegal move even in his day, he played how many games with a club on his hand and clubbed countless linemen in the head with it? Probably giving them concussions as it wasn’t as regulated as today’s game. And yet Reggie is a Saint…but I digress. hope you enjoyed!!

  63. “He hasn’t been in any kind of trouble this year…”

Yeah, what a choir boy. So close to going a whole year without being a dirtbag. Tough break.

  64. @ atthemurph u may want to rethink your statement Murray is the league’s leading rusher and Dallas has the best rushing offense this year where do the packers stand on this

  65. The NFL is stacking the deck, seriously? Only thing that is getting stacked are the offenses against Suh. This is no ones fault except his own. Maybe that is why he continues to play the way he plays. Everyone keeps covering for him. And now it comes down to the NFL is trying to stack the deck in favor of the Cowboys because they haven’t been in the playoffs lately. How did the stack the deck against the eagles? Or the colts?? And don’t forget ALL of the other teams the Cowboys beat this year to win their division and get into the playoffs. That’s a lot of deck stacking going on. Sounds pretty stupid doesn’t it???
