Week 17 power rankings

AP

1. Seattle Seahawks (No. 2; 12-4):  The road to the Super Bowl once again goes through a place where road teams don’t often win.

2. New England Patriots (last week No. 1; 12-4):  Only the Ravens could derail another AFC title.

3. Dallas Cowboys (No. 3; 12-4):  Ice Bowl II, Frozen Gloryhole is looming.

4. Green Bay Packers (No. 4; 12-4):  As expected, a one-legged Aaron Rodgers is still a lot better than a two-legged Matt Flynn.

5. Detroit Lions (No. 5; 11-5):  It’s fitting that Ndamukong Suh’s career may end with a suspension.

6. Pittsburgh Steelers (No. 8; 11-5):  From Cheech & Chong to the Two-Ben Backfield, it’s been a strange season for the Steelers.

7. Denver Broncos (No. 7; 12-4):  This still doesn’t look like a team that can win a Super Bowl.

8.  Indianapolis Colts (No. 11; 11-5):  This still doesn’t look like a team that can win a division-round playoff game.

9. Cincinnati Bengals (No. 6; 10-5-1):  This still doesn’t look like a team that can win a wild-card game.

10. Arizona Cardinals (No. 10; 11-5):  The Cardinals are hoping for a Jake Delhomme sighting in Charlotte on Saturday night.

11. Baltimore Ravens (No. 13; 10-6):  This team is a lot different than, but also a lot like, the Super Bowl winner from 2012.

12. Houston Texans (No. 12; 9-7):  How much better would this team have been if it had gotten anything out of Jadeveon Clowney?

13. Carolina Panthers (No. 16; 7-8-1):  How much better would this team have been if it had gotten anything out of Greg Hardy?

14. Philadelphia Eagles (No. 14; 10-6):  How much better would this team have been if it had a good quarterback?

15. Kansas City Chiefs (No. 15; 9-7):  How much better would this team have been if it had a used Jamaal Charles more?

16. San Diego Chargers (No. 9; 9-7):  How much better would this team have been if Ryan Mathews finally could have stayed healthy?

17. Miami Dolphins (No. 17; 8-8):  How much better would this team be if Rex Ryan were hired to replace Joe Philbin?

18. Buffalo Bills (No. 19; 9-7):  The silence is deafening from new ownership.

19. Atlanta Falcons (No. 18; 6-10):  A top-10 pick, a franchise quarterback, a great young receiver, and the Dimitroff-Pioli front office make this the best job available.

20. New Orleans Saints (No. 21; 7-9):  If Rob Ryan gets fired, ESPN should hire him to do a TV show with Rex.

21. Minnesota Vikings (No. 23; 7-9):  There’s still a long way to go to get to where they want to be.

22. San Francisco 49ers (No. 22; 8-8):  Good luck finding a good coach for a program that has nowhere to go but down.

23. New York Giants (No. 20; 6-10):  Looks like it will be six out of seven years with no playoff appearances.

24. St. Louis Rams (No. 24; 6-10):  If this team ever realizes its potential, it would never lose a game.

25. Cleveland Browns (No. 25; 7-9):  Johnny Jackass?

26. Washington (No. 26; 4-12):  Kirk Cousins wants to be traded.  And he will be, if the draft is expanded to 20 rounds.

27. New York Jets (No. 29; 4-12):  Does anyone really think the situation is going to improve?

28. Chicago Bears (No. 28; 5-11):  Does anyone really think the situation is going to improve?

29. Oakland Raiders (No. 27; 3-13):  Actually, this situation could improve.

30. Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 30; 3-13):  Unfortunately for Jedd Fisch, his boss isn’t as patient as his boss’s boss.

31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 31; 2-14):  Says every Bucs fan, “Tanks a lot.”

32. Tennessee Titans (No. 32; 2-14):  If they gave out a trophy for being the most boring and irrelevant team in the NFL, the Titans would finally have something in the case.

  1. If this league were legit, RGIII and the Redskins would be the #1 seed in the NFC and on this list. Enjoy your scripted sport! I’ll watch a real sport like Basketball and Hockey where Washington DC’s domination shows unbelemished! #NationalFixedLeague

  2. I love how the entire state of Texas forgets how the Boys let them down every single year. They will beat the hapless Lions… good luck in Lambeau

  3. We will be back never count us out Niner faithful will rally against york and baalke. WHO”SSS GOT IT BETTER THAN US?????? NOOOOOOOOOOOOBODYYYYYY!!!!!!!

  4. Not a fan of any these team but Cowboys will beat out the Packers and the only team who would have a chance of beating Seahawks, otherwise Hawks will repeat Super Bowl.

  5. Miami ahead of Buffalo?

The Bills have owned Miami in 3 of 4 of the past games, and like 6 out of the last 8.

That’s a joke…their defense is nowhere nears Buffalo, neither is their WR’s or RB’s…it’s the QB, and he’s average.

  6. I am right, as usual.

The Niners’ failure comes at the hands of a grossly misguided and inept front office. Jed York is too power hungry to get out of his own way. Firing Baalke would be an advisable next move considering his abysmal draft classes. Scot McCloughan is responsible for almost all of the roster. Things will get worse before they get better in Santa Clara.

  7. The Bills are on the verge. If they find a QB and Sammy Watkins stays healthy enough to keep developing, they’ll make some noise in 2015.

  8. Everyone laughed at the notion of the March, ignoring the prophecies. We tried to explain that there is no stopping this train. Yes, there are certainly obstacles and corruption. The same instruments that halted our efforts in recent seasons. You can’t derail destiny, however. It was written that 2015 would cap the Steelers’ dominance over this now-diseased league. And we Sail.

Because of the rapid degradation of this wonderful game we created, as many of you already know, the Steelers plan on establishing its own league based on the original principles of the game, not the abomination it has become. This is essential for the preservation of the sport and the Steelers legacy.

Remember tackling? Remember when you didn’t have to wait ten seconds after every big play just so you can celebrate? This shambling, piggish entity the NFL has become sucks the life from football. What used to be about love for the game has become a masquerade of suits, pens, and bottom lines. How have we let it come to this? We have failed in that regard, but we promise to restore our tradition. We promise to restore American Football. March with us.

    Steeler Nation

  9. “How much better would this team have been if it had a good quarterback?”

How much better would this team have been if it had its good quarterback, Nick Foles, playing behind a healthy offensive line with a working running game?

Guy was 6-2 despite the rest of the offense being in complete shambles and the two losses came by a combined 6 points. Everyone needs to relax with the hate.

  10. When are we going to honestly sit down and discuss whether this Steelers team is the best of all-time? No one is eager to point out that Ben is about to get his third ring. 7 rings. Let that sink in… 7 rings. You are no where near us. We are important.

  11. Houston and Carolina ahead of the Eagles? Detroit and Pitt at 5 & 6?? Miami ahead of Buffalo? Atlanta at 19 with a 6-10 record?

Are these all jokes??? Hands down the worst power rankings I have seen this year.

  12. The media tries to undermine our contributions and achievements. We have a very rich history. We invented this game, despite the whatever story you’ve been told. These the things they leave out of our children’s history books and its disgraceful.

How is Buffalo ranked so low? Do you guys even watch the games?? Bills are a top 15 team in this league no doubt..
    =============================

they’re a top 15 defense for sure. but they don’t have a QB. it’s hard to be considered a top half team without one. orton is gone, ej is bad, who’s going to run the offense?

  14. Why could the Ravens derail the Patriots? They suck this year and they were beaten badly the last time the teams met. I think the Ravens are worse then every other playoff team by a large margin. They only got to where they are by beating ten, jax and the NFC south teams.

  15. ” Ice Bowl II, Frozen Gloryhole is looming.”

Lol best joke from a pft writer in ages.

Only 2 things wrong with this.

Minny and Washington should be interchangeable at 31 and 32. Those 2 godawful pathetic excuses for franchises don’t stand a chance any time soon.

  16. Keep Disrespecting the Black and Purple. The winner of Saturday’s game in Pittsburgh is representing AFC in Superbowl. I sure hope #5 can figure out a way to finally win a playoff game in Pittsburgh!!! NGATA and the boys gonna be looking to HUNT FATBURGERS all Day!

Can’t wait till Saturday night! Go Ravens

  17. I don’t think the Vikings have as far to go as you think. They have the coach and they have the quarterback. It’s fairly easy to fill in pieces once those are in place.

  18. No way the Cowboys should be rated higher than the Packers. And if the Cowboys beat the Lions, they’ll find that out when the Packers beat them in Lambeau.

  19. The only reason that the AFC north has three teams in the playoffs is that they played themselves, the NFC south and the AFC south. The Steelers, Ravens and the Bengals are a joke.

  20. “Only the Ravens can derail the Patriots? I don’t know about that. How about Pittsburgh?”

Lol the Steelers have a horrible record against the Brady-Belichick era Pats. They own the Steelers.

  21. “New England Patriots: Only the Ravens could derail another AFC title.”

    —————————————————————

    Ain’t that the cotton-pickin’ truth.

And boy, oh, boy how awesome would a Ravens/Patriots divisional round game be.

  22. Detroit at 5 has to be chum for commentating. Oh well, I’ll bite. Detroit is 14th ranked in DVOA, and 13th in profootballreference’s SRS. No way on earth is 5th. One can certainly allow for 2-4 spots difference between pure opinion polls and rankings with proprietary formulae behind them, but 8-9 spots is too much.

  23. how the heck was charles supposed to get the ball more for KC? honestly, how? he came out almost every other touch with an injury. even marshall faulk said “you got to be out there on a key 3rd down”. Charles is great, but this year they abandoned the run the last 4 games(100 passes, 25 runs), but they didn’t abandon charles, they should have sat him down and played Knile Davis

but at least be informed about it, KC fall short because of a lack of touches for a very beat up jamaal charles.

  24. what are the odds of the packers losing in the first round of the playoffs for an 8th strait year???
    ———————–
zero, they are on a bye

  25. Ravens New England isn’t gonna happen. Ravens are probably the worst team in the playoffs.. They barley even got in.. Case keenum made them look bad. What do you think Ben will do? Another 6 touchdowns against their bang up secondary? I wouldn’t be surprised!

    ——————————————————————

Well gosh, in that case I guess there’s little point to actually playing the game Saturday night, isn’t there?

And isn’t this the same Steelers team who lost to the Bucs, Jets, and Saints?

  27. Miami Dolphins (No. 17; 8-8): How much better would this team be if Rex Ryan were hired to replace Joe Philbin?
    ——————————————————
It would just move the circus south.

  28. Non playoff teams do not matter now.

The best teams are still playing.
Same will be said next week.

It will work itself out without a lot of whining.

Super Bowl teams know how hard it is to win one.
Losers like the vikings brag about moving up to the top 25 of somebody’s power rankings.

Good teams don’t have to brag about power rankings.

  29. “And isn’t this the same Steelers team who lost to the Bucs, Jets, and Saints?”

No – since Polamalu, Taylor, and Keisel got hurt, the defense is playing well.

You lost to Case Keenum and nearly to Bortles and Connor Shaw at home.

In the last three weeks. Face it, the Ravens are playing like hot garbage.

  30. When are we going to honestly sit down and discuss whether this Steelers team is the best of all-time? No one is eager to point out that Ben is about to get his third ring. 7 rings. Let that sink in… 7 rings. You are no where near us. We are important

Hey jr. when the steelers can double the amount of titles then come back and talk. They will then be in the rarified air Green bay is in.

Pittsburgh has almost been in the NFL as long as Green Bay so you cant ignore the past because they were terrible, just like Minnesota trolls do

  31. The biggest busts of the 2014 NFL draft are Jadeveon Clowney and Johnny Jackass….out of the league in three plus years.

  32. what are the odds of the packers losing in the first round of the playoffs for an 8th strait year???

    ———————————————————————-

Zero since they beat the lowly MN Wipings Jan 5, 2013.

  33. Stop with the talk about the Bills. Just because you live in Buffalo and listen to the dumb radio shows and how great they are doesn’t mean anything. They beat a Detroit team without Calvin and Reggie. Beat Chicago with a banged up Marshall and then an injured Jeffrey. Watching the backup WRs dropping the ball all over the field was a joke. The Bears were going up and down the field on them. They beat a Patriots team who didn’t play their best offensive WRs and TE. So please Bills fans shut up and go away.

please. This Ravnens team is horrible nothing like the one that played NE a few years ago. It’s a lot closer to the team NE blew out in Baltimore less than a year ago.

  36. The nfl needs to change the draft order rules why reward teams with the softest schedule with the tie breaker. Tanking against soft schedules shouldn’t be rewarded the nfl has it backwards toughest strength of schedule should pick first in case of ties No brainier…

  37. The Bills fans are delusional. When the Dolphins finish in the middle of the pack, we are mad. When the Bills finish just as mediocre… They are elated! I think you are not seeing what we all see. The Packers just took the week off and the Patriots barely put players on the field. These were BS wins. I will give you that your Defense is solid, but you are still losers. BTW- if being the #6 rated QB, is bad, i can tell you about 20 teams wish they had Tannehill. Also, you don’t know your facts, the Bills were ranked 4 against the pass and the Dolphins were 6th. I would not say you were that much better. The AFC East needs to get it together because it is weak, but keep pounding your chest Bills fans with your proud (fake) winning season. You can have 2nd place in the Division if this is that important. We would be only happy with 1st, thank you. Strange perspective you have in Buffalo.

  38. No way the Vikings are better than Oakland
    ———————————————————
the Vikings defense is better than Oakland’s. the QBs now is too early to tell, but on defense, the Vikings have talent to build around there.

The Bills don’t have a top 15 defense, they have a top 5 defense, and Kyle Orton isn’t exactly competing with Brady/Manning/Rodgers. If EJ progresses, or they get a good veteran QB (Cutler doesn’t mind taking over for Orton’s teams) then Buffalo could field their best team since the Jim Kelly Era.

  40. Steelers fans thumping their chests, talking about their six championships, talking down on the other teams. They should be talking up to Browns fans (eight championships), Giants fans (another eight championships), Bears fans (nine championships), and Packers fans (thirteen championships).

  41. The Panthers are total frauds. The Eagles decimated them 6 weeks ago with Sanchez playing QB. Yet they (7-8-1 record) are going to the playoffs and the Eagles aren’t at 10-6. The Eagles also own head to head wins over the Colts and Texans, both of whom are ranked higher on this list. Before you start calling me a whiner, here’s what I’m sayng: Why should the playoff qualification system influence POWER rankings? You can’t really tell me the Panthers and Texans are better than the Eagles. They simply are not. And Detroit at #5 over Pittsburgh…the team to whom they just lost?

    Worst. Rankings. Ever.

  42. When the Dolphins finish in the middle of the pack, we are mad.

Wow, 11 yrs is a long time to be mad.

  43. “Only the Ravens could derail another AFC title.”
    —————————————

In previous years, I’d say yes. But given the changes to the teams and the fact the Patriots are improved on defense, I’d expect an outcome somewhere between the 28-13 Ravens in the most recent AFCCG matchup and the 41-7 Patriots in the most recent match-up.

  44. As a Hawks fan since 1976 , possessing a long memory, I welcome with open arms the Pittsburgh Steelers, should we make it to the big dance. We have some unfinished business …This time, if needed, we will beat the refs. as well as the Steelers…..unfinished business I say! Bring it!

  45. what are the odds of the packers losing in the first round of the playoffs for an 8th strait year???

The above represents another stupid comment from a Viking fan. So here is the answer to his ridiculous question. Pretty good considering they don’t play until the second round. And didn’t they beat the Vikings in round 1 in 2013.

So learn to base you questions in fact, such as “How many Superbowls have the Vikings won?

  46. Not a peep about Denver, Indy or Cincy in this thread… Because Denver, Indy and Cincy fans are intelligent realistic fans. Understanding that anything can happen in the playoffs.

So far I’ve seen Sea, NE, Pitt, Bal, Dal and GB fans claim the title is already theirs. These people better come on here and eat their crow after the SB.

  47. I have never ever ever ever complained about a single ranking. But how in the WORLD do you have the Lions as high as 5? They are a lucky team that isn’t that good with a below average QB. A couple of pieces of bad luck during the Season and they are not even in the Playoffs.

    This one befuddles me completely.

  48. I seriously think “Logicalvoice” posts things hoping to get “dislikes” No one could possibly be that stupid with some of the stuff that he types. Maybe if we all ignore him he will go away. So…don’t click like or dislike on any stupid thing he says. Oh, and BTW, the Crapitals will NEVER win a Stanley Cup!

  49. “Steelers fans thumping their chests, talking about their six championships, talking down on the other teams. They should be talking up to Browns fans (eight championships), Giants fans (another eight championships), Bears fans (nine championships), and Packers fans (thirteen championships).”

    —————————————-

Actually the only championships that matter are those achieved in the last 15 years. The rest expire.

  50. Come on folks. THe Detroit Lions are as American as apple pie. In fact they are the economy in microcosm. Like the economy, we keep wanting the Lions to improve. We keep thinking we see signs of improvements. But in the end, meh.

  51. No matter who wins the World Championship this season, the vikings will consider themselves the better team. Super Bowls are just for the lucky not the best. The viking dynasty is underway.
    31 wins in 5 years.

  52. Broncos ranked a little low. With home field advantage on everyone but the Pats, I like their chances of making it to the AFC championship.

I would rank the Packers slightly ahead of Dallas since the Pack have home field advantage if they meet in the 2nd round. Yes Dallas is undefeated on the road but the Packers are undefeated at home.

Put the Bucs at 32 since they have secured the first pick in the draft.

Or it could be that none of those teams are playing at the top of their games right now. No word from Arizona or Carolina fans either because they must be soooo reasonable and intelligent…..nope it’s because the odds don’t look good for them either. When Seahawks fans don’t say anything, we’re branded as fair weather fans or bandwagoneers. Seems like mostly Vikings fans who make proclamations about what they’re gonna do….in the future. We all know anything can happen and often does it’s why we watch. If no one were to talk it up this place would just be congratulations and pats on the back after the games and while I’m all for that too, it’s fun to strut around like we had something to do with the outcome. (Which we don’t) Good like to all teams in the dance, it’s an accomplishment getting there and to all the teams not there even better luck next year…..Go Hawks!

  54. The Panthers are total frauds.
    ———————————————————-
it’s a different panther team than it was when they played the Eagles….they have ran the ball better, Cam’s healthier and the defense has completely changed it seems. ever since they cut Cason and put Norman and Benwikere in, the cornerback play has improved….the pass rush has been better too. i do think they won an easy division, but hey, the rules are the rules. as long as you win a division (no matter how sorry it is) you make the playoffs.

  55. 27. New York Jets (No. 29; 4-12): Does anyone really think the situation is going to improve?

Yeah you’re right. They’ll be 4-12 forever and ever. Thanks for saving me a lot of time and aggravation.

  56. Steelers fans thumping their chests, talking about their six championships, talking down on the other teams. They should be talking up to Browns fans (eight championships), Giants fans (another eight championships), Bears fans (nine championships), and Packers fans (thirteen championships).

Aside from the Packers, Bears and Giants who have had recent Championships, didn’t they have 10 teams and leather helmets for most of those way back then? Heck, they found the Browns 1946 Championship trophy in a garage in North Carolina……..classic!

  58. “Why do people act like Aaron Rodgers wins the Super Bowl every year.”

Funny…cuz Tommy Brady hasn’t won one in a decade and it sure seems like he should have won a lot more for the amount of love he gets…

  59. Hate them, but the Steelers are the best sleeper pick for Super Bowl winners.

Seriously, take out everyone’s top 4, NE, Sea, GB and Den and who’s left? If they get past the Ravens, they can beat the Broncos in Denver and potentially the Patriots in Foxboro. And if they get there….

Just the right mix. Big, strong pocket QB with deep threats, solid running game and good defense.

Imagine if the Texans drafted Bridgewater or Carr instead of that one guy who made that one tackle in college one time.

    ______________________________

Khalil Mack would have been the best choice for them. Carr or Bridgewater wouldn’t have been worth that selection.

It was hard to pass on Clowney, his raw athleticism is freakishly rare. On the other hand, it’s freakishly rare to get those speeding tickets like he did.

  61. I hope the Pats draw and Kick Pittsburgh to curb (as usual) and then
dismiss Denver and Gronk scores winning TD on Sherman and spikes it in his face..#gonnawish_wishbig!

  62. Does anyone ever question the journalistic integrity of this guy? He clearly sells out to the coaches and GMs who play the information game with him. Case in point. Look at his support of the Falcons’ GM. That guy didn’t give Coach Smith any talent to work with on either the offensive or defensive lines. Which was the Falcons’ Achilles heal throughout Mike Smith’s tenure.
