Bruce Allen struggles to explain why he should keep his job

AP

Washington General Manager Bruce Allen had his year-end press conference today. And for the fourth time in his five year-end press conferences, he was addressing the media having come off a last-place season.

That raises an obvious question: If Allen can’t get his team out of the cellar, why does he deserve to keep his job? Allen was asked that question, in a few different ways by a few different reporters, and he struggled to come up with an answer.

“Well, the one thing I do love about the NFL — and I love in all of sports — it does have a scoreboard,” Allen said. “We either win or lose as a team, and it is my responsibility to make sure that we have all the people in place throughout the organization doing their jobs. And as I said earlier, holding those people accountable. And that includes myself.”

But has Allen been held accountable? Not really. He’s still in his job despite finishing in last place four of five seasons. So why should Washington fans have confidence that anything will change?

“I think there is going to be changes,” Allen said. “That’s part of the evaluation process right now. We’re looking for solutions to get the team back on track.”

Allen mentioned that coach Jay Gruden is making some changes on his staff, and he said there will be unspecified “other changes” within the franchise. Allen added that he’s excited about what the team can do in this year’s draft.

“For the first time since I can remember we actually have all of our draft choices,” Allen said.

OK, but it was Allen who pulled the trigger on the trade that sent all those draft choices to St. Louis in exchange for the pick that became Robert Griffin III. If Washington struggled because it didn’t have all its draft choices, that’s because of Allen’s trade.

Allen insists that some things are going well in Washington, even if the scoreboard doesn’t necessarily reflect that.

“We’re winning off the field, but we’ve got to start winning on the field,” he said.

The reality is, fans don’t care about “winning off the field,” whatever that means, unless the team is also winning on the field Allen’s team isn’t doing that.

  1. This team really needs to take personel decisions away from Allen. The Skins used to have a great running game and defensive identity. There doesn’t seem to be a Redskins identity anymore. Please don’t let him participate in draft decisions next May

  2. The only reason I can think of to explain his longevity in Washington is that Allen is very connected politically. His brother is the former Governor of Virginia, and his Dad coached the team in the 70’s.

Political nepotism at it’s finest. There’s no other explanation to account for keeping his job while doing it so poorly.

  3. Allen did a bad job this year, but it was Shanahan who “pulled the trigger” on the RG3 trade. Shanahan had complete and final authority for all personnel and trades and draft picks for his four years as HC.

  4. Only someone affiliated with the Redskin Potatoes would list “winning off the field” as a reason they should keep their job.

They have brainwashed into believing that winning the off-season by signing all the free agents with the most famous names regardless of whether they can still play or not is somehow relevant. They take the fact that players will still take their money as some sort of sign that they are a successful organization.

This starts right at the top. Daniel Snyder is obsessed with collecting all of the shiny toys, whether they be players or coaches. The fact that his GM is a money man whose specialty is fitting big contracts under the cap, and not player development or scouting, should tell you all you need to know.

  5. If winning off the field includes controlling the media circus, not wasting money in free agency, and maximizing your draft picks, then I can’t think of a team that loses off the field more consistently than Washington.

  6. Check the weekly headlines in the papers, the messageboards, everywhere pertaining to the Skins; you aren’t winning off the field.

The SOLE thing Skins fans are saying positive this year is, “At least we found a punter.” I’m surrounded by positive Skins fans and we feel like we have nothing to look forward to.

Snyder has the best intentions for this team but it isn’t enough. He doesn’t know how to hire people that will do what is truly best for this team. No hyperbole meant, but as long as Snyder is around I think we’ll continue to be dysfunctional.

  7. You really can’t blame him, the way you can’t blame a garbage man for dumpster fires. Redskins management exists for one reason: to deal with the discarded remnants of other, greater teams.

  8. If Jim Harbaugh had Bruce Allen to Charm Jed York and play buffer between Harbaugh and York/Baalke he would still have his job. It’s what Bruce Allen does best.

Bruce Allen: Harbaugh, the owner wants you to fire Roman.

Harbaugh: Tell the owner to go to hell.

Bruce Allen to York: Harbaugh says he values your opinion and your football knowledge and said he’ll have to weigh the pros and cons before making such a drastic change like that.

  9. On a related note – Snyder has more loyalty to his front office people than coaches or players.

Remember, he held on to Cerrato for how many years too long?

  10. Another Great Move by the Skins. Does anyone win on the field like they do! What a bleeping Trainwreck of a Franchise. I know this may sound crazy but it’s soon time to bring back Vinny Cerrato to right the ship!!! If not him maybe they can bring back a bingo caller from a old age home to fix Superbob’s mechanics

  11. Lets see….his last 2 jobs left are my Raiders and the Bucs. Both run into the ground and both never fully gaining tracation since….and now the Skins seem to be regressing as fast as possible…I know he only plays a part in all that’s gone on with these clubs but he’s certainly a common denominator.

I guess he’s like most of us…struggling to explain how he keeps his job.

  12. The decision to (fall for the hype and) go with RGIII sealed the fate of the Redskins regardless of who was coaching. Was that on Allen? or Snyder?

Turns out RGIII had an ego problem which was disruptive to say the least–no one saw that coming, everyone mistook that as confidence instead of false bravado.

Can the Redskins expect to fix the problem with the same “braintrust” that started it? At least Hasletts gone. The ‘Skins need a rebuild.

  13. @guppyjunior

You just said the team should take away personnel decisions from its General Manager. That is literally the main responibility of that role. What would Allen do then, just deal with pay structures? You want a glorified salary analyst?

  14. Sure, Shanny had final say on personnel decisions, including the RG3 trade… but Snyder and Allen gave him that power. Handing over personnel decisions was a bad personnel decision in itself.

  15. Winning off the field =

    1. People are paying a lot for parking to attend a game, which goes straight to Dan’s pockets
    2. We are still known as the “Redskins”, though we play like “Nimrods”
    3. Our fanbase buys lots of jerseys each time we name a new starting QB

  16. Dan snider won’t let him do his job always interfering with him fire him fire him give him 5 year contract. no fire him after one year It all starts at the top and Dan s is a complete spoiled rich baby period …….

  17. Firesynder, that is hysterical. Since last December, i have not spent a dime on this team. Usually i go to training camp and a couple of games, as well as apparel. It’s my only way to protest. Need a strong GM and need to build o-line and d-line. I HATE to say it but that is what the cowgirls did. Sad, but I long for the Shottenhiemer days.

  18. It’s time for Redskins fans to speak by not spending money. Keep Bruce, but only for his politics. Hire a real GM and give him the power to choose the proper players. Enough is enough. No Redskins fans give a rats ass about winning off the field! What the Hell does that mean anyway?

  19. guys like this have got to go, they always have reasons things don’t happen and always sell change. They never take the blame for the previous changes only excuses. He has go to go. FYI not a fan of the Redskins here just a football fans.

  20. Bruce Allen is a slick politician who is following the wishes of his boss.
He said nothing that gives hope for next season or for future seasons.
Nothing will change with this sorry organization until everybody is fired and the owner brings a football man to start from the beginning.

  21. You would think that someone in his position would be better prepared for the Q & A since this is a press conference of his calling and much better at public speaking. He just justified everyone’s thinking that the Redskins are run by morons.

  22. if this guy had half a brain he would:

    1. Admit the RGIII trade was one-sided and Washington was on the wrong side
    2. He should openly talk about how NFL salary cap penalties in 2012 were unfair, unjust and unwarranted

Push back on the double whammy of the two events and save his job.. then again:

    1. He is not a smart person
    2. He has no job to ‘save’! he is politically tied in

I am not a fan of the Washington football team that has not been relevant since 1992… (approx.) 22 YEARS almost a 1/4 of a century!! wow

  23. Redskins should fire him so he came come back home to Raiders…
What else do you want from this guy? He brings in all the players, the team for some reason just cant win..Look at his WRs! Allen also got the hottest free agent in Desean Jackson.. The problem is the QB position, …You are NOT going to win a superbowl with RG3…
Brady, Rogers, Brees, Manning, theres a trend there

  24. he should have been shown the door last year when shanahan got fired.on top of all the skins past free agent mistakes, this is the worst. allen is a waste and will be as long as he is a gm anywhere cause the league talent has passed him by.combine him with snyder,a truly awful owner, and gruden,a coach who appears lost deep in the woods with no way out as a head coach, and the redskins who i have pulled for almost 50 years and are my fave team, are going nowhere at an accelerated rate.

  25. When will ESPN or the NFL Network be airing the OFF THE FIELD playoffs?

I just want to make sure I block out time.

  26. Man, just watched the entire thing. The fact the Skins posted it on youtube through their own account shows their ineptitude. Allen came off as so incredibly incompetent they should have done everything in their power to bury the video.

Honestly, most discouraged I’ve been in my 38 years as a skins fan.

  27. It’s not surprising he claims they are winning off the field. The Skins consistently win the off-season. Just read their press releases.

  28. Allen should be kept around as team president to handle Snyders messes…now go get the best talent evaluator money can buy and actually listen to him. GRUDEN shouldn’t have a say in anything related to personell.

Always wanted to go to one of those!

Great comment, but the ‘off-the-field’ events are the zeroes being added to SNYDER’S bank accounts and net worth

  30. @pooflingingmonkey

    Amen.

Another lightning rod for derision in the nepotism department is Lane Kiffin, although he has at least shown some talent for the job he has.

  31. Wasn’t Allen behind or even spearheading the contracts that became Haynesworth’s and D. Hall’s? Those led directly to the cap penalty of $36M! I say that if we can’t have Dan himself grilled over this stuff then BA must take the bullets. (Just so you all know, I think Dan is the real problem)

  32. Wasn’t Bruce Allen’s brother that US Senator from Virginia who lost re-election after he was caught on tape calling a reporter a monkey?

I guess for Allen, anything short of that meltdown is considered “winning off the field”.

  33. I thought he did a great job at the press conference. He was extremely masterful in the way he avoided answering every question. That 50 minutes of complete noting. Maybe that’s why he still has his job, Snyder’s still trying to figure out what the hel* this guy is saying.

That’s just a string of senseless, canned phrases.

  35. Lets not forget that the Skins are two seasons removed from 10-6. When Griffin could still run like a deer the team did well, then he tore his knee to shreds and rest is history. That’s the risk you take with guys like Wilson, Kap, and Griffin.

Remember folks just about every bad team in the NFL lacks a decent QB. If Griffin miraculously stays healthy Washington’s history is very different.

  36. Bruce Allen’s strength is managing the salary cap, that is it.
He should just do that and have others evaluate and assemble the talent.
That formula has a chance to bring the Redskins back to relevance.
Otherwise, he is just a well connected puppet.

  37. “Winning off the field…”

As an Eagles fan, that statement reminds me of all of the Salary Cap Bowl championships we won under Joe Banner’s leadership. Ahh, the glory (wiping away tears)…

  38. Just another of the many worthless hires by Snyder to appeal to the public (Allen, Shanahan, Gibbs, Spurrier, etc.). When they stop being so gullible, he might start doing better.

  39. Which Washington team are we referring to? We need to be specific especially since the FCC declined to declare the nickname of the NFL Washington team racist. It’s time to accept it and start using it again. The sports media lost the battle against reason.

  40. He comes from the raiders management tree, the unedible fruit does not fall from the tree. Bruce Allen is yet another example of why that phrase is still around.

  41. None of us own the team so we can’t do anything. We can wonder why would you keep the GM unless, wait for it………
he did exactly what you asked him to do.

    inj

  42. “We are who we thought we are… WE ARE WHO WE THOUGHT WE ARE!”
Slam mic to the ground, pull up headphones and crank The Ramones then walk off stage..

.. would have been just as insightful and a lot more fun.

    1. let’s not forget how the Redskins mismanaged the injury to RGIII (‘Dr. Andrews was in the loop, Dr. Andrews was not in the loop, ummm, Dr. Andrews is no longer employed by the team,,, magically RG3 will play on a knee brace bigger than SUH’S leg’
    2. Other than Wilson in Seattle, it is proven that a hybrid QB will not last long in the NFL – still a pocket league and RG3 has no skill in the pocket

  44. Winning off the field?!? Really?!? All of us season ticket holders are dropping our tickets, some after having them over 40yrs, because you and the rest of the Redskins managements incompetence is now totally unbearable. Every year at least there’s something to give you a little hope. Next season….no hope…and while Allens coach and players are getting blasted by rumors and the press tearing them apart the self proclaimed ” it all stops at me” Allen keeps quiet. PATHETIC! As long as the buck stops at you Allen my bucks won’t be going into Redskin season tickets.
It’s sad when us Redskin fans were encouraging the Eagles and Cowboy fans to cheer louder at Fed Ex so Dan and Bruce would get the message.

  45. Allen has been masterful at handling the cap…just make sure they suck so bad they can’t ask for more money.

  46. “We’re winning off the field” Seriously?

That’s a textbook example of a non-falsifiable statement. There is actually ZERO method of proving or disproving that stement based on quantitative data, so he can basically say whatever he wants and there’s no way to prove or disprove it.

That makes it a completely junk statement. Completely and utterly meaningless.

  47. This is the 3rd franchise he has ruined IN A ROW!! The Raiders might be starting to turn it around. The Buccaneers are at least 2 years away and the Redsnyders are spiraling out of control. This will ultimately kill both Grudens coaching careers. When will somebody in the media take notice?

HE MUST BE STOPPED!!! Unless Jerry Jones is looking for a GM

  48. Bruce allen is a yes man to Snyder so was the “GM” before this. Don’t be fooled…the big decisions are coming straight from the top. Snyder needs to step out of the way until then he does that….Skins will NEVER WIN!

  49. Won’t be surprised if he doesn’t get fired since owners usually like to just blame the coach for failures instead of the actual guy they hire to build the team.

It probably has to do with how they see GMs to be somewhat on their level in class while coaches and players are seen as junk

  50. 1. When he said “winning off the field” he was actually referring to am increase of community outreach programs. That was in response to the question of what he had done to make the team better in 5 years? Sadly, that answer is actually more appalling than if he actually was referring to free agency.

    2. The fans have started the revolt. For those thinking skins fans are blindly spending money on them, look at the stadium. As I pointed out in another post, Snyder keeps chopping out sections of the upper deck because people aren’t renewing their season tickets, and he wants to keep touting a sellout streak. Its probably abiut 10,000 seats by now. The seats I used to own don’t even exist anymore. It’s now a “party deck” hahaha. Yeah, that place is a great party atmosphere.

  51. First of all he should have just said “as much as I respect Mike Shanahan, i’ve had success with people like Jay Gruden and Rahim morris. He should’ve pointed out the last two seasons in Tampa were winning seasons. By pointing out his history with coaches like the
Af orementioned ones and the winning seasons he could actually give some hope or an increased amount of hope than what he gave this past press conference.

  52. I am a life long Redskins fan. I am lucky enough to have been able to witness real Redskin football when i was a kid. After watching his press conference today , i am embarrassed and angered by this complete Jackass. He has tarnished his fathers good name. He really said they were winning off the field. To me a fan that is a punch in the balls. Your winning because your still making money and to gloat over that is a slap in the face of every Redskin fan who has ever spent a penny on any Redskin merchandise. You don’t have to worry about that anymore,as long as Bruce Allen has a job ,The Redskins will get none of my money.

  53. The G.M. and owner have no clothes. Anyone can see that Bruce Allen is just another puppet in a long of puppet personnel/coaches who have been here while Mr. Snyder plays fantasy football with our team. There are many fans who are absolutely fed up with how this team has been run into the ground with their Jack and the beanstalk mentality of spending on players that goes nowhere and giving away draft picks. As Fed Ex Field fills up more and more with opposing teams fans, he may get the message. Then again, he says he is out of the way, but like Robert Griffin saying he is staying off social media for the rest season that ended right after they beat the eagles, he just can’t help himself. I am afraid that as a life long Redskins fan, I am doomed to have this man run our team.

  56. Former Redskin coach George Allen Sr. is spinning in his grave and eating ice cream with Jack Pardee

  57. Hey PFT, I’ll write tomorrow’s article for you… Just replace all the Bruce Allen references with Rick Spielman and replace Washington with Minnesota.

  58. Dan Snyder can’t seem to do anything right. He has no idea. But in his defense, there are a lot of winning owners that have no idea why they’re winning. Snyder keeps hiring people with super bowl winning backgrounds, but for some reason, the super bowls don’t seem to follow those people to Washington. It’s easy to pick on Snyder, but some day he’ll get lucky and hire the right guy.

  59. Is it possible that even Dan Snyder was not embarrassed and ashamed by that joke of a press conference?

As a life-long Washingtonian and fan of the team, I’m embarrassed and ashamed to be a fan. Dan Snyder somehow managed to take gold and spin it into sh!t.

    Great job Danny Boy!

Always wanted to go to one of those!

Sold out. Minnesota Vikings fans buy them all up early every year.

  62. they should fire him if for no other reason because he starts out saying he he loves sports because there is a scoreboard; and within a paragraph following that up with “we’re winning off the field..”

  63. After reading all these comments I’m glad that I didn’t see that press conference I probably would have been sick to my stomach.

  64. i don’t think Washington struggled to win due to lack of draft picks, just who they picked with those draft picks.

  65. Ok seriously. Our GM had weeks to prepare and this is the final result? Bad bad bad. Poor roster. QB mess, bad off season contracts, Orackpo, Hall, Hatcher. Over aged and injury prone. Cast off o’line built only for zone read runs (thanks Shanny) undersized and can’t pass protect and goddamn ugly musterd pants!!! Draft a safety or pass rusher in first rd, fill the rest of the draft with o’line and corner. Trade either cousins or RG 3 and revert to our burgundy and white uniforms!!!

  66. How does the New England Whiteskins sound?… They should be called the Washington Warriors or something. Until they change the name nothing else should matter!

  67. He throws around cash with no real plan, makes excuses for why it’s not his fault, gives answers to questions not asked, and gets poor results?! He’s perfect to work in Washington. The towns just rubbing off on him

  68. The funny thing is none of you posting here work in football. If any of you think you can do better job, hit the lottery (this is the only way you will mever get enough money to buy a sports team) and buy the team, then you can do something for the organization. All this backseat driving you doing is doing absolutely nothing. Any of you who talk about being life long REDSKINS fans should be ashamed of your comments. One thing true REDSKINS fans have always been is LOYAL to the organization. If you don’t like what’s going on, have a difference of opinion regarding the name….GET OFF THE BUS!

And when it all turns around, I’ll be the one kicking you off the bus, cause we don’t want or like FAF’s.

  69. Same guy that was gifted a loaded Bucs roster w/ Chucky, won the Super Bowl, then drove the organization into the ground.

  70. If you want lunch with a Hall of Famer, Bruce is your guy! But Danny Boys pied pipers need to be removed.

Zero clue! They keep picking players that are either injured or not even good enough to suit up. LaRebius has been in uniform 7 times in 3 years as a 3rd round pick. And he is one pick who hasn’t been cut!

  71. Every bad corporation has executives like Allen. You can never figure out what they actually do and what they are involved with something, it turns into disaster, but someone else’s head rolls! They’re always very politically connected and professional at “spinning the truth” and, well, lying!

Of all of the disasters Snyder has brought on this franchise, Allen just might be the biggest! And it’s as if Snyder does no background work on the candidates. Allen was run out of Oakland and Tampa for being a horrible personnel guy! He’s never drafted well and he’s never run a successful scouting department.

I have no idea how Snyder made money before buying the team as he seems to have no talent for selecting personnel!

  72. This is a free country. If PFT doesn’t want to use the word redskins they don’t have to.

Just like you don’t have to keep coming to PFT if their not using the name offends you.
