Vikings’ assistant G.M. declines to interview to become Jets’ G.M.

George Paton is happy as the Vikings’ assistant general manager and is not looking to become a general manager elsewhere.

That’s the word from Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, who reports that Paton has declined the Jets’ request that he interview for their general manager vacancy.

Paton was considered one of the leading candidates to become the Jets’ general manager and is reportedly a favorite of Charley Casserly, the longtime NFL executive who is currently serving as an advisor to Jets owner Woody Johnson. If Paton had wanted the job, there’s a good chance he would have gotten it.

But Paton, who just completed his eighth season in Minnesota, has decided that he’s in no rush to leave. He’ll stick with the Vikings.

  1. I don’t get this at all. What is in his resume that would even warrant an interview much less an offer for a GM job?

Is it that Matt Kalil was picked at #4 overall and serves as human turnstile at LT? Or the fact that Ponder was projected as a 3rd or 4th rounder before panic set in and the Vikings took him at #12 overall only to become the bust that he is. Or how about giving away 3 draft picks to move up and take Patterson, a WR who only played one season of college football and still doesn’t know how to run routes.

I suppose if your aspirations are to finish in last place like the Vikings do with regularity, then this guy might be your GM. But the Jets do that already so what’s the point?

  2. Manish source was two people from Minnesota standing Times Square waiting for the ball to drop.

“Dude, there’s no way he takes that job. He won’t even interview.”

  3. Is it too early yet to speculate that the Jets’ ownership may make it a lot harder for them to land a high-caliber GM? Which in turn may cost them in the HC race? Just sayin…

  4. I guess the Jets aren’t interested in the Packers assistant GM who helps Ted Thompson pick those draft busts every year. Maybe the Jets have a chance to turn it around after all.

  5. The Vikes have a bright future and are on their way up, while the Jets are mired in mediocrity (which starts with their owner and continues down through the rest of the organization). Paton is wise to stay in Minny.

  6. Like I said before, the Jets are fools for firing Rex. Ant decent person would jump at the GM job is Rex was still onboard!!

  7. What’s the difference ? Two of the 3 or 4 worst franchises for the last 20 years. If you’re going to work for consistent bottom feeder you might as well stay where you’re comfortable.

  8. So Xavier Rhodes is a turnstile CB? I think Calvin Johnson and Alshon Jeffery would beg to differ.

That backup RB was the best rookie RB until he got hurt. A guy gets hurt so that makes him a bad pick?

That tackle drafted in the 7th round who isn’t in football is still contributing as much to the Vikings as Percy Harvin is contributing to the Seahawks.

  9. De Costa in Baltimore is in the same position as Paton and and has turned down a bunch of GM offers over the years. There’s a lot to be said for a guy who knows he’s in a good situation and isn’t going to blow it all up unless just the perfect opportunity comes along. And the Jets are not that opportunity.

  10. @seahawkmikeboy! Yet you keep signing our cast offs!!!!all that pumped in crowd noise aka “the 12th man” is giving you brain damage!!!

  11. I’m surprised the Sconnies are still sober enough to type on their keyboards at this hour of the day…

  12. Aside from packer fans, most people around the league say the same thing that the Vikings have assembled a nice young nucleus of talent to build around and have done well in the mid rounds as well. This team is a couple drafts aways from being a legitimate contender. Unless, of course, if you’re a packer fan.

  13. Thank god. He is needed right there in Minnesota. Keep up the long standing traditions of drafting bust after bust and spending way too much for Packer players that are over the hill.

  14. The historic Vikings franchise is too much to pass down.

    Top five nfl players
    1. Teddy bridgewater
    2. Cordarelle Patterson
    3. Harrison smith
    4. Adrian peterson
    5. Big game joe flacco

  15. RealNFLMaster is embarrassed by the New York Jets and their treatment of Rex Ryan. Today I am officially revoking my membership as a New York Jets fan, citing “cause” as the reason. I wish the Jets nothing but 3 win seasons for the next 10 years.

I am officially a free agent.

  16. Vikings fans winning the off season before the post season officially begins……AGAIN.

Ted Thompson is a top 5 GM, this dude is a nobody serving under a dummy. He’s wanted by the Jets? Must be G R E A T…..

To which Packers’ Assistant GM are you referring? Since that position doesn’t exist in the GB hierarchy, I question your knowledge of anything other than how to make weak efforts to antagonize other posters.

There is no reference to Green Bay in the article, so you should make an effort to stay on topic.

Or it could be that since he joined the vikings they have drafted:

Adrian Peterson, Brian Robinson, John Sullivan, Percy harvin, Phil loadholt, Everson Griffen, kyle Rudolph, matt kalil, Harrison smith, josh Robinson, sherif Floyd, Xavier Rhodes, corderell Paterson, Gerald hodges, Blair Walsh, teddy bridgewater, anthony Barr, and jerrick McKinnon. So just a majority of their roster and pretty much every promising player on their roster.

Have the Vikings made poor decisions while he has been there…yeah but what team hasn’t? His successes far exceed his failures at this point. As with every team the qb is the biggest and most important player. It appears after missing on ponder they hit a home run with teddy at the end of the 1st.

  19. The Vikings have their QB of the future, very solid coaching, and a nice core of young, talented and fundamentally sound defensive players. That’s about 75% of the equation right there. Beef up the OL and tweak the WR situation a little more and they’re on their way.

Yes he’s a genius. He got a turnstile CB, a backup RB who’s on IR and a tackle who’s out of football for Percy Harvin.

    Genius.
    ————————————————-
It is funny how that Harvin trade stills bothers some Seattle fans, even with their team doing so well right now. These are the fans that must be bandwagon fans.

  21. Why would he?? The Vikings Have a shiny new QB who gets better with every game. Rhodes is a young guy who is dominating the best receivers in football. Hitman Smith is an elite young safety. Mike Zimmer has literally took the D from last to very good in one season. AD most likely will be running wild again for us next season. Charles Johnson looks like a hidden gem for us. Going to open the greatest sports stadium in the world soon.

It’s GOOD to be a Viking fan now,we are moving up quickly.

  22. He’s turned down these offers before.

I’d only imagine he’d leave for the right situation. The Jets are far from that.

Vikes look like they finally got something going, not surprising that he wouldn’t want to leave.

  23. The future is bright in Minny regardless of what the nay sayers think…. I can see them battling for the NFCC in two years

Not sure what happened to Kalil???

  24. Mike Zimmer has literally took the D from last to very good in one season.

It’s GOOD to be a Viking fan now,we are moving up quickly.

The Vikings gave up just 5 points less than Green Bay. So let me see you post Green Bay has a very good defense

Vikings played a lot of very bad teams this year. To their credit, they beat who they should of beat…..but I think some of you think they are further along than they are.

From last place to third place, congratulations.

But its already the off season for the Vikings so now is the time to begin to claim the next Superbowl (of which the Vikings have never won once in their franchise history), the next divisional title, the next Canton bound draft pick.

Your Minnesota Vikings, annual winners of the Spring Paper Championships.

  26. They should hire whiz kid, Eliot Wolf. He’s 32 but like 50 in football years. Doogie Howser like

  27. Why move? Spielman is one year away from getting the boot anyways. Stay in house, the kids are in school, you already earn more than 98% of the natives, the simple fact the asst gm job is full time means you do more the most minnesotans… there is no upside to leaving.

  28. For what it’s worth, local media and former players rave about Paton. Sage Rosenfels was on a local show just the other day speaking very highly of him. I don’t know if Paton passing means he’s not interested because he wants to stay put or not interested in the Jets gig. There’s been a lot of talk about him being a top notch GM candidate over the last few years, so I assume this won’t be the last we hear of him.

  29. The Vikings have the best GM in all of sports in Slick Rick. They have an excellent assistant GM as well, who would rather stay in Minnesota than go to an inferior team.

Teddy Bridgewater has already surpassed Cutler and Stafford in the NFC North and by next year will be better than Rodgers.

This defense is swarming. There is no doubt in my mind who the real legion of boom is, and it isn’t in seattle.

Awards for the best defense in the NFL and best offense in the NFL will no doubt next year go to the historic Minnesota Vikings.

Clearly other teams are afraid of Minnesota, that explains why they are coveting our players and personnel.

16-0 is only a year away. The greatest display of talent in the history of the NFL is only a year away.

All I can say is be ready, cause its comin’ and there is no stopping it.

    __________

Green Bay has a very good defense. They finished just below the Vikings in points and yards allowed. Unfortunately for Green Bay, their defense is composed mostly of guys who are on the tail end of their careers, while the Vikings’ defense is composed mostly of young studs who are only going to get better.

I’d hope picking in the top 10 every year you’d draft one or two good players.
    ____

Only Anthony Barr, Matt Kalil, and Adrian Peterson were top-10 picks.

Teddy Bridgewater, Xavier Rhodes, Sharrif Floyd, and Harrison Smith were picked at the end of the first round. You know, where Ted Thompson picks gems like Datone Jones, Nick Perry, Derek Sherrod, and Bryan Bulaga.

  32. Too many of you misunderstand.
The Jets are looking for results.

The vikings do not seek to win.
In the last 5 years the vikings have 31 wins.
Life is easy as assistant GM with no accountability.

This guy does not want a high pressure job. He is happy being a loser without anyone demanding results. It’s a nice soft job.

  34. Word please: VIKENVY

Translation: The inferiorness and impending doom that
comes with watching the Mn Vikings grow
quickly into an unstoppable force under
the direction of Mike Zimmer. The rapid
phenomenon has grown to a plague like
crisis in the land of chuds known as….

    GREEN BAY

  35. I’m not sure his decision isn’t based more on the teams seeking his services than the desire to stay with the Vikes, but who knows. Either way, it’s good to see he’s in demand and happy to be in MN rather than the coaches that have been running away from the wasteland that is Wisconsin and Green Bay under the guise of “family reasons”.

  36. Hilarious. The insecure Viking posters are responding to this Viking thread with Packer-related comments…..even before the Packers trolls do!

    “Obsessive……..Thy Name is Viking Fan!”

  37. Your boy Teddy had one more Touchdown and 1 less int than Tavaris Jackson in his first season lol…

Good luck! Eventually teams will figure out all he can throw is a screen and he’ll be out the league with his noodle arm.

  38. Woody had a hard enough time finding a GM last time, he’ll probably have to post the opening on Career Builder. Sorry to see all that valuable experience learned from the great Rick Spielman going to waste… That was hard to type with a straight face.

Wrong. Three anti-Packer comments from Viking fans before the first Green Bay troll showed up. Easy to confirm…..go back and read from the beginning.

  40. its amazing to me that every post becomes a hate on the Packers post , what is wrong with Minnesota fans? can they really be that sad ? is it that bad living in Minnesota? someone please explain

  41. Why are packer fans so infatuated with commenting on Vikings articles? Is life so bad over there in sconni? Or is the unemployment rate so high that you people have nothing better to do with your day?

    OK – I did:

The first 3 posts aren’t trolling comments at all, and maybe one of them is a Vikings fan, fourth post is Packer fan, but I wouldn’t call him a troll, fifth post is a Packer troll….

go back and read from the beginning…

  44. Understand what I said: Comments Nos. 11, 14, and 16.

    tjacks7, ketchupaholic, and ariani.

All anti-Packer comments in a Vikings story thread….all showing up before the first Packer troll showed up.

    I will repeat:

    “Obsessive…….the Name is Viking Fan.”

  45. Understand what I said:

Comment number 5: whatjusthapped – Packer troll

    showed up before 11,14,16

    I will repeat:

    “Obsessive…….the Name is Packer Fan.”

  46. Comment number 5 is a comment…..only. Not a troll.

Keep trying. I’m going to call you the King. Mr. King Obsessive.

  47. Go ahead live in denial — comment 5 and comment 8 are both posts by Packer trolls.

Go ahead, live in denial…or believe Packer fans are always and above it all.

  48. or better yet, post some wisdom you learned from your men’s league basketball games…that’s always really interesting and insightful

  50. Nope don’t remember the details…just remembered how funny it was to think that a poster was trying to incorporate their “Glory Days” into a discussion about pro football.

    Glad I made you smile!

  51. You’d think that with 7 first round picks in three years on an “up and coming” team, SOMEBODY on the Vikings would make the Pro Bowl. I guess advancing from last to 3rd in your division is considered a significant success for some teams.

He’s obviously staying because the MN job will be open shortly.

Rick Spielman was already fired once for incompetence in Miami.

This, and that he’s seen Percy Harvin before, no need to see him again.

  53. “Teddy Bridgewater, Xavier Rhodes, Sharrif Floyd, and Harrison Smith were picked at the end of the first round. You know, where Ted Thompson picks gems like Datone Jones, Nick Perry, Derek Sherrod, and Bryan Bulaga.”

    …………………………………………………………………………………………..

You mean the same Datone Jones, Nick Perry, and Bryan Bulaga who are in the playoffs once again? Or the Teddy Bridgewater, Xavier Rhodes, Sharrif Floyd, and Harrison Smith who had to google “playoffs” to understand what that word means?
