Packers promote Eliot Wolf to director of player personnel

AP

Eliot Wolf got a job with the Packers right out of college, and he looks like he’ll be staying in Green Bay for a long time.

The Packers announced today that Wolf has been promoted to director of player personnel.

The 33-year-old Wolf has been with the Packers for 11 years and was around the team even before that because his father is Ron Wolf, the longtime Packers executive who is a finalist this year for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Obviously, Eliot Wolf benefited from having a father in the right place, as many people in the football business do. But the fact that Eliot keeps getting promoted in Green Bay well after his father’s retirement suggests that he’s doing good work and advancing on his own merits. Ted Thompson won’t be around forever, and it won’t be surprising if some day, another Wolf is running the Packers’ front office.

  1. They don’t always win the trophy, but they’re usually in the conversation. Front office continuity (and acumen) is key

Eliot Wolf has already forgotten more about football than Rick Spielman will ever know.

Why are you trolling the Vikes? They’re not even worth trolling.

  3. Because Chris Polian is as good as Bill Polian, right?

The amount of nepotism in the NFL is embarrassing.

  4. Greenbay gets “1st round busts” but we keep winning (; meanwhile the Vikings get higher 1st round picks and keep losing! Enjoy!!

  5. You know who was also pretty successful by 33? This guy named Jesus. Maybe you’ve heard of him. He’s not the directer of player personnel, but he is the director of personal prayer.

  7. You would think the Viking trolls would have nothing but admiration for things Packer. After all, the Packers OWN the Vikings thoroughly….year, after year, after year.

    Explain THAT, experts.

I am no expert, but the Packers have only won 9 more games than the Vikings in the 109 times that they have played. I wouldn’t call that owning the Vikings every year. Plus, the Vikes have won the division more times than the Pack.

    Aaron Rodgers. That was easy.

  10. Good thing the Vikings have their act together. That boatload if money the gave to Greg Jennings is working out. When was the last time he was relevant?

    2011 draft

12th overall Vikings pick Christian Ponder

64th overall Green Bay selects Randall Cobb

    ouch…

    ———

Every team makes mistakes in the draft. For example, Tony Mandarich was drafted second overall by the Packers. Now that’s an “ouch!”

  12. Ha Ha Clinton Dix is far from a bust right now. TT unlike other teams and fan bases, know there are more to drafts than 1st round picks.

The Packers got 2 steady starters at Center and Safety, and two ok role players for TE and WR. That’s a very good start to this years draft class.

    continually dominates your team.

I’m a packers fan, and it’s hard to attribute the past several years of winning to anything other than Rodgers. Without Rodgers, what would separate the packers from the Vikings or Bears?

  16. “Every team makes mistakes in the draft. For example, Tony Mandarich was drafted second overall by the Packers. Now that’s an “ouch!””

Very, very true. Only difference here is that every team thought Mandarich was a franchise left tackle. Only Minnesota thought Ponder was a franchise quarterback.

I agree that in the history of the rivalry, you can’t say the Vikings have been OWNED by GB, but it is a what have you done for me lately league, the Vikings haven’t been too good as of late, as the Packers have beat the Vikings 10 or 11 times since ’07 while the Vikings have won 4 games, Plus the Packers have won the league more times than the Vikes.

  18. Vikings are such trolls. So. Very. Sad.

And the Pack just keep rolling on . . . it’s so fun to be a Packer fan. How much fun are you having, viking fan? Keep enjoying!

  19. Considering the top 5 draft picks that year. Yes, the Mandarich pick still stings. Tony the Turnstile.

  20. Everybody likes to play the “what if game” Here’s mine. If the Lions would have had the #2 pick, and the Packers had the #3 pick that year, the Lions would have picked Mandarich. This would have left the 3 pick BARRY SANDERS for the Packers.
Here’s the what if. What if Sanders would have been in the back field along side of Favre for 10 years or so?

  21. So what if the Packers had taken Barry Sanders instead of Mandarich?

No Wolf, no Holmgren, no Favre, no Super Bowl – just good enough to limp along with Infante at 8-8 and 9-7 for the next 10 years a la the Lions and Wayne Fontes.

Yeah, it really stings to remember how that worked out. Not.

“the Vikes have won the division more times…………..”

People in Minnesota really need to set the bar higher.

  23. Daddy trading for Favre, and Rodgers dropping from number 1 in the draft makes everyone in the front office look like geniuses.

If they had both they probably wouldn’t have won anything. Sanders was a great runner but he was also a team killer. Way too many negative plays and those are drive killers.

His big player were never good enough to over come those bad ones. Sure he was a highlight reel runner, but if you want to win titles a guy like Emmit Smith is what you want. Shortens the field, keeps the O in positive down and distance and got yards when they were there. RARELY TOOK NEGATIVE PLAYS.

That was the best thing to ever happen to the Packers. That pick cleared house and set them up to bring in competent people. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom first

  26. Barry this Tony that, they have both been out of the league since 98.

Can we talk about someone who made an impact more recently?

    ———————-

The draft is more than one round. I guess Clay Matthews and Aaron Rodgers are busts. Can through in Bulaga too.

The Packers do very little free agency so to say they do nothing but draft busts is just silly. 6 years and counting in the playoffs. 4 consecutive North titles. Super Bowl in that mix as well. Yep those players are all busts.

Why don’t you just type “look at me” in bolded caps if you need the attention so badly??

Its obvious you are ariani BTW…

  30. The Packers are smart enough to keep getting good QBs. You’d think others would figure that out by now. We saw what happened to Bill Polian and his son when Peyton Manning got injured in Indianapolis. They went 2-14 and everyone got fired. As long as you have a Hall Of Fame QB, and keep him healthy, everybody thinks you’re a genius.

  31. Green Bay has figured out how to build a non-stop contending machine.

So its no wonder why Vikings fans would be jealous.

  32. Poor queenie fans so bitter and jealous trying to talk trash when they have absolutely nothing from the poor incompetent Viking franchise to talk positive about. They are left to stew in their hatred while us Packer fans are loving our team and all the success that comes with it.

    5. Packer medical personnel are incompetent
    4. Some of your player’s names can be made to sound female
    3. You make the playoffs a lot, so you lose in the playoffs a lot
    2. You had a rough stretch in the 80s
    1. If you didn’t have one of the guys on your team, it would be worse.

Viking fan trash talk……as ineffective as the real Vikings!

  35. Can you imagine what it must be like to watch a Vikings game with the three stooges, aka Poet, Ariani and Cody? Considering the Vikings futility in the regular season and their nonexistent playoff games, all they have left to do is to make childish and baseless comments hoping to get a rise out of the Packer fans. We see right through your posts for what they really are…deflecting your angst as a fan of a team that has NEVER won a Super Bowl title. It must really suck to be them.

  36. Now,now..the Purple People have won an NFL Championship…the last year the NFL and AFL existed as separate leagues. Of course, Hank Stram and Kansas City …the same Chiefs that were throttled by the Packers in 67…matriculated up and down the field on the purple ones…so…they have that going for them…

Why hold that against the Packers? Don’t forget that those players need coaching as well.

Grooming QBs in the NFL is hard just look at the mess in Cleveland since returning to the NFL. The Bills and Phins have struggled since their HOF QBs left, the Broncos had to get Manning to stop the post Elway drought, and other than having 2 HOF WRs making Culpepper look great the Vikings haven’t had a QB last more than 5 years there since Tommy Kramer.

Even if you do hit on a QB, they need to to get better every season until they are elite, other words you wind up with with a lot of questions around tier 2 talent like RG3, Cutler, Kaepernick or Matt Ryan.

Those kind of situations lead to very hard choices for the teams, down the road, and frequently involves people losing jobs.

Maybe he can end the streak of first round busts. ———————————————————————————————————- if the packers fired ted thompson the vikings would be the first team backing up the brinks truck to his house! i’d rather he have a few busts in the first round and find undrafted rookies like tramon williams and sam shields, or find really good quality players in the later rounds like a david baktiari 4th round starting left tackle, james starks 6th round, who has something the vikings don’t a superbowl ring. and how about those 2nd round players?? randall cobb, jordy nelson, nick collins greg jennings?? the only first round busts i think of when vikings fans start talking are erasmus james and was is roy williams the receiver the year the vikings past on aaron rodgers twice??? yeah your season is over, shouldn’t you be preparing for your teams annual top ten pick in the draft?

  41. Yeah Thompson and the Packers scouting department has been pretty bad. So bad in fact that 3 guys that worked for him are now GM’s in the NFL including John Schneider who has 1 more LOMBARDI trophy than the Lions & Vikings combined (not hard to beat zero). Not to mention the fact that Ted has his own LOMBARDI trophy and keeps his team competitive every year with a chance to win another. Losing can keep a fan base delusional and full of envy and excuses.
If only Ted could be more like the Vikings front office that wins off season championships every year after the draft…

And yet Codi, your Vikings keep drafting really good players like Ponder and Corduroy and too many to mention. So please explain how by drafting so many busts there’s another LOMBARDI trophy, 3 years ago from this regime’s drafting expertise?
I would love to see the off season championships the Vikes have won. Do you have a Mike Tice Trophy so at least there’s something in that empty trophy case? bahahahaha!

  43. Eliot Wolf got bumped up because he was probably considered by the Raiders to replace Reggie McKenzie . As far as busted picks go only Justin Harrell and Derrek Sharrod really count and that is because of multiple injuries. The jury is still out on Datone Jones and Nick Perry who are improving and getting better in Dom Capers complicated scheme. Ted Thompson passed on Dez Bryant and took Bulaga because Dez is a head case Diva not fit to play for the Packers regardless of his talent . Ted Thompson doesn’t not draft or accquire players who rock the boat . He wants team first guys .

  44. No one can deny that Ron Wolf set the stage for the success of the modern day Packers. His influence and winning mentality remain in the organization.

And with a good number of other teams as well. His influence is all over the place. When you’re that good at what you do, the son must have learned quite a bit, and the Packers think so to. Many good years ahead for the Packers.

I agree, the Packers took Cobb who had similar yards and receptions this year to Dez 4 less TDs, plus GB also has Jordy Nelson.

TTs best trait is drafting WRs Jennings Jones Jordy Cobb, even late round guys like Boykin, and Johnson who is now in Minnesota have shown to be effective at times, I think Abberderris will be solid as well.

GB invested in Rodgers, they would have been silly not to take a tackle, wih the Oline struggling that year, I also think that Bulaga was the best player available back then. He has shown when healthy he can play well at this level.

  48. I have more fun reading Packer story comments on PFT.
Just reading the crappola the VIQUEEN FANS post makes me smile. WHY ? Because it’s proof positive the VIQUEEN FANS are once again frustrated with their own team “AGAIN”, and the JEALOUSY they show for us Packer Backers is the proof.
What separates us from them ??

Super Bowls I, II, XXXI, XLV and the Lombardi Trophys proudly on display.

What do the Vikings have ???????? Ahhhh, that would be NOTHING !!!!
