Silence becomes deafening in Philly

Getty Images

Two days ago, the Eagles and V.P. of player personnel Tom Gamble had the latest “mutual parting” that was anything but mutual.  Reportedly, the Eagles not only fired Gamble but also escorted him out of the building.

The Eagles have said nothing publicly about the reasons for Gamble’s departure.  Coupled with coach Chip Kelly’s recent praise for the man who set the table for Kelly’s exercise of final say over the roster, speculation has run rampant that Kelly and G.M. Howie Roseman engaged in a showdown over Gamble — and that Roseman won.

If so, the question becomes whether Kelly will accept that outcome.  A plugged-in league source senses based on the current dynamics in the front office that “something big” could be happening.  So what could that something big be?

No one knows at this point.  Kelly may have told owner Jeffrey Lurie that either Kelly goes or Roseman goes.  Lurie may have responded by deciding to move on from Roseman, who previously won a power struggle with former team president Joe Banner, Lurie’s boyhood friend.  Or Lurie may have responded by telling Kelly that both guys are staying, and that Kelly remains under contract for three years.

As a practical matter, that may not be an ideal solution.  If the Kelly-Roseman dynamic already is becoming the 2015 version of Jim Harbaugh and Trent Baalke, forcing Kelly to stay when he doesn’t want to will cause only more dysfunction.

Another possibility would be to trade Kelly to one of the various teams with a head-coaching vacancy.  An effort to trade Kelly would explain the extreme silence, since any team that would be trading for Kelly would first have to comply with the Rooney Rule by interviewing at least one minority candidate.  Once the team(s) interested in Kelly have interviewed at least one minority candidate, a Kelly trade could happen.

I’m not saying a Kelly trade will happen.  But if the Gamble firing has driven a permanent wedge between Kelly and Roseman and if Lurie won’t be firing Roseman, trading Kelly could become the only sensible alternative.

  1. If Jeff Lurie drives Chip Kelly out of Philly, he is worse than both Jed York and Woody Johnson.

    What a boob.

  2. It’s all my fault… I was born in 61.. The last Eagles championship was in 60… Sadly I will never see them win a Super Bowl, as I am a curse.. I hope my kids can enjoy it someday….

  3. To be a Philadelphia fan, is to be an expert in disappointment. I’ve accepted this and situations like this no longer affect my emotions.

    We’ll always have Rocky.

  4. And the circus continues in Philly.

Don’t worry ‘delphians, the realest, strongest city in PA will hold things down, like we always do.

  5. Hey Chip, why don’t you come to Tampa and be our OC (hell even head coach). You can bring your boy Marcus Mariota as well.

  6. All fired or laid off employees have to be escorted out by security. Richard head bosses don’t want a doo dee left on their desk even if they deserve it.

  7. I reported conjecture almost an hour ago. Why hasn’t the team responded? My speculation:

  8. Are there any bigger losers in NFL history than the Eagles? They always manage to screw everything up. Sheesh.

  9. kelly knows that his gimmicky offense wont win a championship in the nfl, so he rather be fired (with pay) and then go back to college where he belongs

  10. One would think that the Rooney Rule would be lifted for trades for coaches. Obviously if a team trades for a coach and that team’s mind has already been made up. So having to comply with the Rooney Rule in such a circumstance seems to be making a mockery of the intent of the rule and therefore would be condescending to anyone interviewing in fulfillment of it since they’d obviously have no chance of being hired.

The rule has already been made somewhat of a joke here and there but at least when openly hiring for a vacant spot there’s the sense of propriety that the rule intended without reducing some black candidate to mere formality fodder.

  11. Last year he was the greatest thing since sliced bread and now this nonsense.

This is why, despite the last couple of years, I wouldnt trade being a Giants fan for anything. We have our ups and downs but we are nowhere near the mess that the Cowboys, Redskins, and Eagles always seem to be.

  12. Kellys gone,,,, thats why the GIANTS retained Tom! Tom was not going to be able to get out of the division with a title as long as Kelly was in Philly ! If Kelly was staying the GIANTS would have found someone to challenge Chipper for the upcoming years !

  13. Would absolutely love to see Chip come to Buffalo. I know it’s as big a reach as there is. Considering nothing has happened yet. But dreams are what make life worth living, right?

  14. Football is one of the few professions where someone can get hired and paid significant money to do a job they have no real experience in. Roseman has never sniffed a football nor has he any background in evaluation. He trying to get rid of all of the “football guys” in the building that are threatening to his position as GM.

Can you imagine your surgeon telling you before the procedure “Ive never been to medical school, nor have i actually performed this procedure….but Ive seen it done by others and am confident I can do it”… #Tragic#PoorPhillyFans

You can replace Howie anytime…but it would be much more difficult to replace Chip

  15. Can somebody please explain the infatuation with Chip Kelly. New Hampshire didn’t win anything when he was OC there. Oregon didn’t win a BCS Championship when he was head coach there. He got to one playoff game and lost in his first season in Philly, and this year saw one of the greatest December collapses in NFL history. Yes, he has an exciting offense and they can put up big offensive numbers, but I remain unconvinced this guy can win a SB and he is as arrogant as they come.

  16. Gamble and chip to San Francisco in a bigger backdoor move than in buffalo? Nfl does have to one up the mlb in crazy off-season moves….

  17. Hey peeps… if the Buccaneers got Kelly, they wouldn’t have a pick to draft Mariota… geniuses.

  18. As a Redskins fan, I cannot believe that somebody could outdo Snyder for dumb decisions but looks like it is a case of #youneverknow

  19. If I’m Chip (which I’m not), I would say so long to Lurie & his boy and go where I have real power. That probably means back to college…

  20. Could Gamble be heading back to San Fran and Chip coming with?

I am astounded that neither the Jets nor Bears have reached out to Gamble for their GM position yet. Makes me wonder if something else is already in the works with him.

  21. Don’t fire Chip Kelly. Don’t trade Chip Kelly. Don’t make him mad. Don’t piss him off. Don’t tie his hands. And above all else don’t give him a reason to quit.

Just don’t do it. You will regret it.

  22. “To be a Philadelphia fan, is to be an expert in disappointment. I’ve accepted this and situations like this no longer affect my emotions.

    We’ll always have Rocky.”

Haha, you seem like the most level headed, easy going Philly fan ever.

  23. hmmmm – ILL TAKE HIM – give whatevers needed to get mariotta, keep dennis thurman to run rex’s defense…yea, I’d sign up for that

  24. As a life long Eagles fan and 20 year season ticket holder with 18 others…this would be the worst move ever. What us Lurie thinking. Fire Rosemam and give Chip whatever he wants. If not my group is done and from the others I know many others will be too.

  25. As a Jets fan – I think the Eagles should rip off the Jets.
Send them Kelly and Foles (you all seem to hate him).
The Jets will send you 3 first round draft picks and a 2nd rounder in the form of:
    – Kyle Wilson (their #1 draft pick in 2010),
    – Calvin Pryor (#1 pick in 2014),
    – Dee Milliner (#1 pick in 2013),
    – Geno Smith (2nd round 2013),
    – and as a bonus a bag of doughnuts (or a bag of Black & white cookies, aka half moon cookies – they are really good), and 2 pounds of sliced hard salami.

  26. I love it!! Teams througout the league just destroying themselves because of ego. I want more teams to do it which will make it a cake walk for my team to get their 7th, 8th & 9th Super Bowl rings. GO STEELERS!!

And the Eagles would be throwing in half their offensive line for the #1 pick. Bucs can always trade future picks as well you know….

  28. Another off season of palace intrigue in Philadelphia. Lurie & Roseman love press, good or bad. They don’t get the recognition Dallas or New York get, so they settle for gossip pieces like this one.

  29. Honestly if I was Buffalo I’d be gunning for Kelly. Swartz did a wonderful job with the defense and if Kelly can get this offense up and moving around a mediocre QB like he has been in Philly they could finally do some real damage in the AFC East.

  30. How about them COWBOYS…..
How about one and done by Sunday evening.
For a team that hasn’t done anything since the early 90’s, their fans sure talk a big game.

  31. As an Eagle fan, If you fire Kelly and NOT Howie, I will no longer be an Eagles Fan. Period. I am tired of the constant bargain basement guys we bring in to save money. This is something I would expect from Joe Banner. Get rid of your Bean Counter and let Chip drive the car.

  32. If the Eagles ownership gives up Kelly to keep some suit, they will get what they deserve–a losing team…

  33. All the Eagles had to do was beat Dallas IN PHILLY, and then beat Washington. But they didn’t.

They choked harder than most teams have in quite some time. They had the players. They had the coach. They didn’t have the character or the desire to win, and they choked.

What is a little unusual is WHEN they choked, not that they did choke. Philly has ALWAYS choked away a SB trophy, but it usually is in week one of the playoffs.

Now it is the Cowboys that have the chance to represent the NFC East, and they deserved it by going 8-0 on the road, and were among the leaders in the league in a lot of categories.

Sorry, haters, but Dallas has EARNED the chance to win it all. Philly choked it all away, as usual.

  34. former Eagles scout John Middlekauf confirmed on Twitter that his sources are telling him Kelly isn’t leaving.

Talked to many sources over the last 24 hours, the message has NOT changed – Chip Kelly is going nowhere
    — John Middlekauff (@JohnMiddlekauff) January 2, 2015

  35. They have won 10 games in the past 2 season. One play in Arizona was the difference in the season. To start over to placate Roseman’s ego would be disgraceful. I thought Laurie was a good owner because he kept his hands off and let football people be football people. It appears I was wrong.

Kelly won 10 games last year and this despite the 2011 and 2014 DVDs being unmitigated disasters and the 2013 circling the toilet. Roseman can go as far as I am concerned.

  36. As a Bears fan I would be all for trading Cutler and a 4th pick to get Chip Kelly after of course Gamble becomes the Bears GM. Then the Iggles can sign Shanahan as HC and a lot of people would be very happy. Not sure it would the Iggles fan though.

  37. And this turning of their knives on Chip surprises you in what way ???

This city has driven off every decent player, coach and manager they’ve ever had. You could put together a pretty good list of names they’ve ridden out of town.

You have to go back to Dick Clark on American Bandstand to find a guy that stuck with a franchise for any length of time !!

  38. I don’t get the Niners rumor; why would Kelly leave Philly to get out of a power struggle and jump to a team that just lost a great coach because of a power struggle?

  39. how did chip do picking out this draft class ?
    stop this nonsense , plz!
gamble probably sent out feelers stating he was available for a GM job , and the brass found out about it and booted him

  40. Roseman ran the 2012 draft (Boykin, Kendricks, cox, Logan etc)…I hope Chip realizes that there is room for other opinions in the eagles organization.

All said, I love chip. Barring any developments, I’m still extremely glad he coaches my favorite team.

  41. At times like this it is nice to be a Packer fan:
    NO OWNER
    Team President
    G.M.
    Head Coach
and they all seem to get along and excel at their job and keep their nose out of where it don’t belong

  42. Let’s see…the Redskins are a dumpster fire, the Cowboys are a soap opera, the Giants (while having competent ownership) are a model of inconsistency, and the Eagles are a train wreck. There’s your marquee division in all of football…the NFC (L)East.

  43. To Chicago? Cutler will have less time to think and more opportunities to atone for his poor decisions until benched.

  44. Welcome to niner nation!!!!!!!!! He will fix Kap and his offense will flourish with a dynamic mobile qb. yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. You do not need to interview a HC minority candidate to comply with the Rooney rule.

Instead the rule dictates that the team interested in trading for a HC (i.e. Chip Kelly) should propose to at least one team a trade for a minority HC or AC, if a minority HC is not available.

In addition, a team is not required to have a HC vacancy to trade for a HC. The Bucs could trade Lovey for Kelly.

  46. Why on Earth would the Eagles let Kelly go? I realize they missed the playoffs but what did they go 11-5.

I’m a Cowboys fan but I would hate to see the Eagles lose Kelly. I think it would set them back plus it would say something about the team ownership. The same way it did about the 49ers.

  47. The only way to get Jeff’s attention is to boycott the games – plain and simple. What competent coach would come to Philly if Kelly gets run out of town?

Your an idiot and Giants will suck as long as Eli is the starting qb

  49. Chip ain’t going anywhere, even Lurie isn’t that dumb. Chip has too much support with the fan base the be fired. They fired a personnel guy, so what? Gamble lost an alpha male pissing match with Roseman. The End.

  50. So Eagles restructure their organization, kick Roseman upstairs and elevate Kelly too. Everybody happy, but doesn’t make for good PFT drama . . .

  51. Everyone mentions how we collapsed, with no mention we were without our starting quarterback on both offense & defense

  52. Ha! Trading Kelly to Tampa. Pretty funny. Let’s say that the space whales returned with Spock’s corpse and the trade went down. If he couldn’t win with all that talent in Philly, why o why would he win with a 2-14 team, even with…oooh, Mariota. This site is always good for a yuk or two.

  53. 49ers owner just sent out a thank you card and gift basket. Wow this breed of entitled owners is a joke. Imagine where the Pats would be if they couldn’t deal with a jerk coach.

  54. First, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You are wrong yet again pro football talk, maybe instead of trying to push a story out, maybe gets some facts first.

Second, I really wouldn’t have cared one way or another if Chip left or not because the Eagles aren’t winning anything until he adapts his offensive strategy.

How about them GIANTS is a more pertinent question for you. Let’s keep it on topic for you – yet another losing season (6-10), and getting swept by Dallas again for the second year in a row. Oh, how chapped you must be as a Giants fan, and it shows.

Typical hater post. What counts is the TOTAL # of SB wins when it comes to teams and their legacies. You are STILL behind the Cowboys even after 2 SB wins (very fortunate wins due to the defense) in the past 7 years.

Now you are on here hating when your team finished
6-10? Just too predictable. You should WANT the NFC East to win it all, but it is obvious your butt-hurt is just a little too much.

Just sit back and enjoy the displeasure of the Cowboys being in the post-season. And if the cowboys DO win this week, what THEN will your creative, original gripe be – two and done? And if the Cowboys are fortunate enough to somehow win it all, what THEN would be your hateful spew? That they have only won one since the mid-90’s?

Just remember you still trail the Cowboys with 5 SB wins to your team’s 4, even though the Cowboys haven’t won one since the mid-90’s.

Now go get your shine box…..

  56. @ hutson14

“Let’s see…the Redskins are a dumpster fire, the Cowboys are a soap opera, the Giants (while having competent ownership) are a model of inconsistency, and the Eagles are a train wreck. There’s your marquee division in all of football…the NFC (L)East”.

Let’s see….. Yep. The NFC East has 5 SB wins in the past 20 years (the end-all be-all in this league). And your team’s conference?

You are probably a Brown’s fan. And along those lines, how’s Johnny Bench working out for ya? And you have Jerry Jones to thank for skipping on him to take a pro bowl rookie OT in Martin.

  57. If Chip goes it would prove that this city has no clue how to put a championship team together. Just like the Flyers, Sixers, Phillies… all losing teams

  58. If only we had a coach in Chicago who was so valuable to the franchise that he could make a power play like this and win. Good for Chip & the Eagles! Shame on the Bears and their puppet show!

  59. “Your an idiot and Giants will suck as long as Eli is the starting qb”

And as we all know, Romo has been a playoff phenom…just unstoppable in the “big game” LOL Only Cowboy fans are sillier then iggle fans.

  60. @jsrdc: it appears I’ve touched a nerve with a Cowboy fan. I’m not too chapped. I enjoy the fact that the GMEN have appeared in 3 Super Bowls since the last time the Cowboys made it to the big game. I especially enjoyed the 2007 & 2011 wins. The goal is to win the big game, something the Giants have done twice in recent seasons against probably the most consistent franchise, the New England Patriots (and ending their undefeated season in 2007). I do congratulate the Cowboys for getting past the 8-8 hump, it must be quite exciting for the fans to get by the .500 mark. There was a time the Cowboys aimed for Championships instead of a winning record. The Cowboys could learn a thing or two from the NFC Easts most solid franchise, THE NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANTS!
