Despite no extension, Jerry Jones assumes Jason Garrett will stay

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is working as a lame duck.  And he’ll continue to work as a lame duck until the season ends.

Appearing Wednesday on ESPN, owner/G.M. Jerry Jones explained why Garrett hasn’t gotten a new contract.  Along the way, Jones managed to throw a little shade at one of his more popular former head coaches.

“I just didn’t do it and didn’t want to — that is, extend the contract,” Jones said.  “Jason’s been coaching under the same contract actually for about seven years.  I’ve got tremendous confidence in Jason Garrett’s growth and how he has evolved as head coach.  And so that I felt when the time is right — I didn’t think it was right to start the season.  And so I felt when the time is right we’ll sit down and extend his contract. . . .

“We’ve paid a price and always do for a coach that’s learning.  Just think, I’ll give you one example, Jimmy Johnson.  We won one football game in his first year being a pro football head coach.  So coaches grow, coaches evolve.  I’m glad that we’re gonna get a chance to have the benefit of the experience and the growth that Jason Garrett has shown.”

That’s fine, but without a new contract, someone else may be getting the benefit of the experience and growth.  Indeed, Jones’ explanation should be viewed by other teams with vacancies as an endorsement of Garrett as a guy who has worked out all the kinks on the Cowboys’ watch, and who’s ready to become a successful head coach with a new team.

There’s one way for Jones to avoid that.  He can extend the contract now or, at the latest, immediately after the season ends.  By then, however, it possibly will be too late.

  1. Does it matter who is coaching when own the commissioner and you can PARTY with the refs before a game?

  2. Whatever. Garrett ain’t goin’ nowhere. Why would he leave a job where the owner basically thinks he is his son, and couldn’t get himself fired unless he goes 0-16, for a job where he would not be the son of the owner and have the annoying pressure to win games?

  3. The way this season is going why change a thing right now. The smart thing to do is let it ride and worry about those less important career goals after the season. I applaud Jerry putting together this 2014-15, 13-4 football team. It’s been fun to watch thus far. To me it looks like the players and coaches are excited to be playing on a performance based pay scale anyways. Nobody’s saying a word about it except the media. I absolutely can’t wait til Sunday afternoon. This team is focused!

  4. lol, where is he going? he doesn’t call offensive or defensive plays and is has basically been a lame duck coach for his entire tenure.

he wouldn’t even get an interview with another team. although based on his relationship with jerry he should get top considerations for any butler job

  5. Garrett should run away from home .. er .. find another gig at the end of the season just to show Pop/Jerry/Mr. Jones.

  6. I can’t believe how many stupid people there are, as evidence from the comments above.

Jerry bought the refs? The NFL is rigged? What a joke.

I suppose the ref strip sacked Stafford, twice? They forced him to side-arm throws and miss receivers? Twisted his arm to throw an interception?

Stafford lose the game for his team, not the refs.

With regard to Garrett, he’s not going anywhere. Coach salaries do not count against the cap. The Cowboys are the #1 team in revenue and profit. Jerry is a billionare. They can pay him whatever he wants to stay and be just fine.

4+ seasons as HC and 1 playoff and now everyone convinced Garrett’s the next mastermind?

You just answered your own question.
That’s why no teams are after him.
And Cowboys fans aren’t 100% convinced themselves.

  8. By saying that Jason is a puppet means that Jerry Jones not only the GM but as a coach had this team go this far this year?
Wow best owner in the league

  9. Jerry needs to see how much money he has left after paying refs before Garrett gets new deal.

  10. I’m trying to understand – how after they lose to Green Bay by 20 points – and Garrett and Romo have 1 playoff win in their time with Dallas – Jones thinks this is somehow a collection of brilliance?

Keep on debunking the narrative man.

the logic is strong with usdiveteam.

  12. I didn’t catch the part about the refs in this story so I went back and reread it. Nope not there. It must be the haters that can’t actually read just throwing that in there hoping that is what the story is about. Makes sense because that’s all the so called sports writers have been writing about for the past THREE (3) DAYS. So I guess the illiterate people have at least a 50/50 chance.

Exactly what I was thinking. The average IQ of the commenters here is astonishingly low.

The Cowboys went 12-4 this season, which is pretty good by any standard. Everybody hates Jerry Jones, right? And since Jerry Jones like Jason Garrett, they hate Jason Garrett too. Oh, they also hate Romo.

So how in the world did they get to 12-4 this season? Someone has to get credit, right? At this point they’re backed into a corner.

Then on Sunday, something amazing happened! The refs made a questionable call. Oh boy! Now we can just say the NFL is rigged! That’s it – it’s not Romo or Garrett or Jerry… it’s the refs!

PFT commenters take a collective sigh of relief. The world feels right again.

  14. Garrett is not a ‘Lame Duck’. He is merely in the last year of his current contract, there is a big difference.

Obama is a Lame Duck because he cannot be re-elected and is finishing out his term with a GOP Congress.

  15. We in Baltimore count our blessings that Mr. 1 Playoff Win turned down our coaching offer. Harbaugh has 10 playoff wins since Garrett declined the job.

  16. This will be an uphill battle to win this one in Green Bay so Jones already has a speech ready for Garrett if they lose on how they came from nowhere, blah, blah.Win or lose no one expected this season from Dallas and if they beef up that defense through the draft and free agency look out for next year.

  17. lack of growth as a coach didnt cause jimmy to win only one game his first year. it was the lack of talent.

reached in islamorada jimmy was quoted as saying “keep my name out your mouth”….

  18. He’s obviously going to stay. How out of tune with reality do you have to be to conceive of any kind of scenario where Garrett isn’t back next year? .

This offensive line you see, it was built in the draft. You know who has been overseeing it’s construction? Garrett. Jerry has acquiesced so much power the last few years. And it’s the reason the team is in the right direction.

People want to say yeah the Cowboys are doing well, “but it’s not because of Romo”. Or “it’s not because of Garrett”. Or “it’s not because of Jerry”. Well… who is it, then? Because they KEEP winning and it’s not a fluke.

  19. If I was Garrett, dealing with the crap of being Cowboys coach just wouldn’t be worth it. I think he’d be better off finding a nice major college coaching job and getting away from Jerruh and the insanity.

And then all the stories can start about the Cowboys interviewing Mike Shanahan for their HC position.

You think they’re gonna keep DeMarco and Dez AND beef up the D?

  21. The nice thing about Garrett, and perhaps this is a group thing with the current coaching staff, is their seeming to be making more confident choices this year. Choices that are bold and regularly show confidence in the ability of the team to execute.

Don’t look now, but after so many years of futility, we have a Cowboys team with a few great drafts under its belt, a lack of outlandish deals for questionable players, a very solid OL and a defense that is tightening up, great skill players all around, and now a solid coaching staff that is working great and handling challenges really well.

To me, it’s less important that they win a Super Bowl than that they sustain this smart approach they’re taking to the team. As a fan, it’s much more fun to root for a good team that doesn’t win it all than to go back to the wild swinging for a home run.

  22. The Raiders should add Garrett to the interview list after the Packers win this weekend. Or maybe a trade, they can send cash to the Cowboys so Jerrah can get him that glory hole that he wants! LOL

  23. “Jason’s been coaching under the same contract actually for about seven years. I’ve got tremendous confidence in Jason Garrett’s growth and how he has evolved as head coach”

    Translation:

I’ve been paying Jason 3 million a year even when he was a offensive coordinator. If anything, I want a refund.

  24. Garrett’s just a toady. He probably washes Jerruh’s Caddy on the weekends. Can’t imagine another team even giving the guy an interview.

  25. Garrett’s coaching record while Cowboys head coach:

41 and 31 (not counting the playoff win the other day)

    Jimmy Johnson’s Cowboys record:
    44 & 36

    Barry Switzer’s Cowboys record:
    40 & 24
    Chan Gailey
    18 & 14

    Dave Campo
    15 & 33

So, Garrett’s record as the Boys coach is pretty good compared to many who have coached the Boys during Jerry Jones ownership.

Jason is the 7th head coach under Jerry Jones and he has the 3rd highest winning percentage behind 1st Barry Switzer and 2nd Wade Phillips.

Jason’s Boys winning percentage is higher than both Jimmy Johnson’s and Bill Parcells.

  26. Wouldn’t it be great if Garrett finished out the season and immediately signed to coach somewhere else? Jerrah would be taken aback, methinks. I’d love to see the look on his face…

  27. Jerrah, “Hey Jason, without the NFL massaging the game you’re another one and done after years of failure. Try pulling that off with the Jets.”

  28. So, Garrett’s record as the Boys coach is pretty good compared to many who have coached the Boys during Jerry Jones ownership.

    +===============

    Unfair comparison.

Those other coaches were “pre-NATIONAL FIXED LEAGUE”.

You know, they had to actually win fair and square.

  29. Hey florio..just wondering if you’re going to post a story on how the nfl admitted to 7 missed calls against the lions when the cowboys sent in the allowable 10 plays for review?

  30. This is a dig at johnson’s coaching abilities. He lost big in his first year because he was learning the nfl ropes, not because the team sucked.

  31. I have finally figured it out! Call me slow to the party but I’ve got it!

Because the same, old tired narratives no longer apply people needed something else to gravitate to…because the Cowboys have had a heck of a year it must be fixed or favoritism.

Because if it’s Dallas has finally gotten their team on track with an arrow pointing straight up you people would lose your freaking minds!

Keep laughing suckers…I smell a Super Bowl happening real soon. Maybe not this year but soon. Live with it!

  32. As long as Romo, Jerruh, Fatburger, and the head of NFL Officials on your side, in cheating, I mean winning by any means necessary, all you have to have is a wink – wink for Jerruh, the Godfather of the NFL. Garrett will continue to be the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

  33. Hard to believe but most of these comments about implied cheating are normally directed at the Pats. Must be the same people with a changed target the Cowboys. All sound the same….Stupid and Lame.

  34. I guess haters will always hate. All Garrett has done is take a young football team and make them believe. They don’t quit and don’t give up and believe in one another. Average guys playing beyond there potential with the help of great coordinators. Sounds like a good head coach to me. I do love the statements can’t win in December, check .Can’t win a playoff game, check. Can’t win in Green Bay, who knows, but crap I am starting to believe. Either way the guy deserves an extension.
