Report: Eric Mangini to interview for Washington defensive coordinator

Eric Mangini has been coaching the tight ends with the 49ers of late, but he made his name as a professional coach on the defensive side of the ball.

He may be headed back. Dianna Marie Russini of NBC Washington reports that Mangini will interview for the vacant defensive coordinator position on Jay Gruden’s Redskins staff.

Mangini was the Patriots’ defensive coordinator in 2005 after several years as a defensive backs coach and then was hired as the Jets head coach the next year. He joined the 49ers staff in 2013 as an offensive assistant and then moved to the tight ends job for the 2014 season.

Mangini also interviewed for the Raiders head coaching job recently, although there hasn’t been any indication that he has a strong chance of landing that position.

The Redskins have either interviewed or plan to interview Wade Phillips, Ed Donatell and Joe Barry for the defensive coordinator position.

  1. Why wouldn’t they just promote Raheem Morris? The guy actually did a heck of job in Tampa in that position when he overtook that post as HC. I guess the fact that the Bucs fired Jay’s brother and the Redskins GM in order to hire Raheem as HC might have something to do with it.

  2. why do I have a weird feeling that the Redskins actually did something smart for once?

  3. “Patriots Defensive Coordinator” is a little generous. It leaves out the fact that Belichick took away his defensive playcalling duties because he was terrible.

  4. Hopefully whomever is the next DC won’t have loyalties to Bruce Allen, Snyder, Gruden or McCloughan. An independent up and coming defensive specialist would be best. IMO

  5. Mangini was a very good Defensive Backs Coach — of course it helps to be coaching players like Ty Law, Asante Samuel, and Rodney Harrison.

I am not sure he is cut out to be anything but a position coach in the NFL, but you can make a good living as a position coach.

  6. Our Tight Ends didn’t do so hot this year, so I’m wondering if this is any real loss…

  7. You’re the Redskins… you hired the wrong Gruden (not that there is the right one) and you got an old washed up GM running your organisation.

Anywho, wait and see, Morris will pop-up as DC somewhere and excel. Meanwhile your franchise will still be hiring and firing new coaches every 2 years.

  8. Just the fact that he was interviewed by the Raiders for a HC position made me throw up in my mouth a little.

  9. “Mangini was the Patriots’ defensive coordinator in 2005 after several years as a defensive backs coach and then was hired as the Jets head coach the next year. ”

    Editors !!!

He was the Browns HC not the Jets

He would have been a good HC but he had more control than what he could handle. If he just game plans he can be good.

  10. Whats the matter with the Skins? You want an up an comer like Pepper Johnson. I would think the Giants would give him a shot. Morris would probably do well elsewhere its just the Skins need to unload all these coaches that have been accustomed to losing. They need to go a different direction just to survive and try to build something that doesn’t maintain that losing culture.

  11. I’d like Mangini on the GIANTS Staff actually.

He’s a good coach, and an excellent talent evaluator. When Rex won, he won with all of Mangini’s guys. Look at who Mangini drafted when he was with the JETs. A LOT of real real good players.

RIGHT ON. You saw Vernon Davis regress under Mangini. What’s up with that?

    ================================
Morris has been the Redskins Defensive backs coach for 3 years, have you seen the REDSKINS pass defense lately? Enough said

  14. I hope they too with son of Bum, he would bring instant respect to a locker room in dire need of.

  15. Darrelle Revis
    Nick Mangold
    David Harris
    Debrickishaw Furgeson

All will most likely be in Pro Football Hall of Fame..All drafted by Mangini when he was with Jets..

Fact: His teams were the least penalized NFL teams in both NY and the Browns.

Drafted Danny Woodhead when no one knew who he was..

Taught Troy Brown how to play DB

Rodney Harrison said “Best coach I ever had”

He can help the Redskins…A LOT…just saying

  16. Curious to where the idea that he lost his playcalling as DC under Belichick came from. I have never seen a source for this.

  17. That was never true..The year he was DC they literally lost or then half the defense to injury and still managed to play well enough to get to the post season and should have beaten the Bronco’s, but Champ Bailey stepped in front of a Brady pass and that was all she wrote.

  18. The redskins would benefit from a guy who is a solid x and o’s technician and most importantly a coach that has won and has the potential to instill in those players the right mentality

  19. He did wonders for the 49ers offence. Yikes!

Really..Well, last year he was a consultant for the 49er’s offense and they made it to the NFC Championship…no credit for that?..This year he coached TE’s..V.Davis had a sub par year but thats on Kaepernick not Mangini..Kap decides who gets the ball not Mangini
