Seahawks open as seven-point favorites vs. Packers

More than four months after losing at Seattle to begin their season, the Packers will get another crack at the Seahawks in the NFC title game next Sunday.

And as was the case then, the Packers are underdogs to win in the unfriendly confines of CenturyLink Field.

After Green Bay edged Dallas on Sunday, numerous Nevada sports books made the Seahawks seven-point favorites over the Packers. The prevailing Over-Under is 47 points.

Per the Spreadapedia database, the Packers have never closed as underdogs of seven points or more in any of Aaron Rodgers’s 113 starts spanning regular season and postseason play.

In fact, the Packers have only once been underdogs of even six points in any of Rodgers’ starts. They were six-point dogs at the Jets in 2010, winning 9-0.

Also, the Packers have only been underdogs of seven-plus points on three occasions in Mike McCarthy’s tenure as head coach. The Packers were 10-point underdogs at Seattle and 11.5-point underdogs at Philadelphia in 2006, and they were 14.5-point underdogs at New England in 2010, when Matt Flynn, not Rodgers, got the start.

Seattle rolled to a 36-16 victory over Green Bay in the NFL regular season opener between the clubs on September 4. The Seahawks closed as 4.5-point favorites.

  1. Green Bay fans know this isn’t a good match up. Dallas struggled to get rush with 4 versus Rogers at home and that won’t be a problem for Seattle at Century Link. The RT gets eaten alive but Avril.

Jordy Nelson over Maxwell was a problem but Russell Wilson/Lynch have problem to be a bigger problem at Capers defense. Seahawks had a slow start last week I see them getting up early and going on attack mode.

  2. yes , that is about right , that is why , the call was made ! The Seahags must be in the SB game !

  3. It will take a miracle to beat that team in Seattle with a hobbled Aaron Rodgers. He moved around like he should be parking in the handicapped spots today.

    Seattle is a great team.

  5. Packers are terrible at defending mobile quarterbacks. But seattles offense goes into sleep mode a lot so that could make this game close. The packer passing game could depend on if maxwell plays or not. Seattle run defense is short some defensive tackles so it think that would be the packers best bet…but then again cam chancellor

  6. Let me guess. The Seahawks and their fans are overconfident. Russell Wilson isn’t that good. Richard Sherman doesn’t cover both sides so he isn’t that good. The fans only started watching 3 years ago and know nothing about football. Does that about cover it? GOOD!!! I’m glad the haters think that way. It makes it sweeter knowing you all have to just take it and the hawks and their fans get to enjoy another great run. Nothing against the packers, I actually like them much more than other teams but vegas ain’t stupid. They actually have to put their money where their mouth is unlike anonymous haters on the internet. Go Hawks!!!

  7. This is one of the easiest championship games to pick in awhile a healthy Rogers got crushed week 1, an unhealthy Rogers with no mobility in the NFC title game its like putting a piece of meat in front of a pack of wolves…..Seattle 35 Pack 17

  8. marshawn lynch is gonna have a field day. panthers defense was 2nd best left in the playoffs, packers defense is not very good. rodgers will try Sherman’s side without much sucess.

  9. THIS Hawks fan respects the crap out of the Packers. Trust me, most fans, and the entire team is NOT gonna take the Packers lightly. That all being said, the Seahawks “should” win. They did just lose Paul Richardson with a Torn ACL, but I am not going to act like he is a massive loss as a #3 receiver. He was the primary kick returner, and while hasn’t done anything special, it means we have to probably put Baldwin back there, risking him.

This shocking level of disrespect will serve as motivation for Green Bay next week.

    ——————————————————-

Disrespect??? They are playing the defending champions, with one of the best defenses of all time, and a QB who is 25-2 at home, coming off a game where he had the 5th highest QB rating of any playoff game in history, and you think that’s disrespect???

  11. how sad are Viking fans. the Packers have 4 superbwl wins ,the Vikings have 0, get over it ,its never going to change .even if the Packers dont make it this year, they will win another one before the Vikings get a chance to lose another one.

  12. As many readers know, I am not a Packers fan. But I can’t deny how well the Packers have improved since Week 3. Objectively speaking, I’m still giving the edge to the Seahawks because of where they’re playing. But don’t be surprised if Steve Hauschka wins the game, 24-21.

  13. Cheeseheads do us all a big favor – when your team gets shredded by the LOB and the 12th man PLEASE don’t use a hobbled Erin as an excuse! You’ve been blowing all year that your team is the best. It should be with or without Erin if that was REALLY the case.

  14. cue the seahawks bandwagon fans most overrated fan base in the nfl. goodwill wouldnt even take their jerseys as donation in 2011, now they act like they know everything about football and are the greatest fans in football.

  15. #1, Seattle is great.
#2, They are greater at home.
#3, They are great at Dholding & grabbing and getting away with it (I have tons of photo screen grabs)
#4, Packers get neutralized at good/great defenses, see Seattle, Buffalo, Detroit losses in road.
#5, Kryptonite. Seattle is to AGod, even whwn healthy.
#6, AGod is not healthy. He’s slow and immobile now, like Kyle Orton or Peyton. That’s trouble vs Seadderal, especially in loud Seattle where the Packers OTs won’t be able to hear the snap, and will give Seattle DE and OLB that edge. As seen in week 1, and in 2012 when they sacked Rodgers 7 times in first half, when he had his legs.
#8, Earl Thomas, Richard Mouthman, Kam Chancellor, Bobby Wagner, Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, Bruce Irvin, Russell Wilson, Marshawn….all Seattle’s KEY guys are healthy.

    Unless zebras help a lot,
    Seadderal 27
    Cheeseheads 13

Or unless Seattle loses Wilson early, as Arizona lost Palmer and Rams lost Bradford or Packers lost Rodgers last year….or unless a RB takes out a blitzing Wagner like Jammal Charles took out Brian Cushings ACL when he was blitzing….

believe me…..if green bay loses, thats all you will hear, guaranteed. just like week one. what was it 36-16? and all cheeseheads said was the refs jobbed them

  17. This shocking level of disrespect will serve as motivation for Green Bay next week

Revis said the same thing. Seem to remember him giving up a TD.

  19. Seems about right.

    – Beast Mode should be able to control the game against the Packers 24th rank run D
    – Packers pass game will meet the #1 pass D in the league
    – Rodgers not 100%, and this time doesn’t have two weeks to rest

If this game was in GB, I’d call it even. given it being in Seattle, 7 seems right.

  20. Gonna b real, real tough with Rodgers hobbled. Seattle best enjoy this one, cuz next season ur salary cap is gonna finally come out of fantasy land, time to pay up for Russell the love muscle, kiss Lynch goodbye, and come back to reality, kinda like SF this season.

  21. Simple minded people can only use the word “bandwagon” for they know their team, GB will be losing. So, they have to jump on a bandwagon and say, bandwagon! sad!

  22. Have to feel badly for the Vikings fans. Angry, bitter, cynical… they dont know what its like to root for a favorite team beyond November let alone in the playoffs. Football seems like such a sad and demoralizing sport for them and yet it must be better than any alternative because they still come here game after game spewing hate against superior teams and the fans who root for them.

  24. Both teams are better since week 1 meeting. I am a Packers fan but Seattle is the better team it seems. I don’t think they are unbeatable but the Pack will need to play better than they did today, Seattle will probably need to play better than they did yesterday as well. I think 7 points is fair, should be a good game if both teams play their best.

  25. GB D is a helluva lot better then people think. Aaron as mobile as Peyton is scary but it will be a good game. Good luck to all. Good luck to the vikes on that championship you already won next year

  26. I have nothing but respect for the Seahawks. I have family out there and we will be attending the game.

I can only hope the Packers play much better than they did in week one.

Best of luck, Seahawks. This really is the Super Bowl.

Can’t speak for other fans, but I’m here because it is week 2 of the playoffs and I am a football fan. Don’t flatter yourself.

  29. Wow only 4 superbowl win in that long history….Dallas has 5 rings.. And we disrespected you all in green bay…with all tye mistakes we made and the bad calls…haha you wont have lambeau next week…good night packers…

  30. House money baby. Vegas and the experts don’t expect the Packers to win. Nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Anytime we’ve got #12 we’ve got a chance. And the Packers are vastly improved since Week 1.

  31. Given Rodgers’ injury and the Packers level of play on the road this year, I think a 7pt spread is about right. Nothing “disrespectful” about it.

I expect a much better game than week 1, but all in all if the Packers pull off a win in Seattle it’ll be a pretty big upset.
    Here’s hoping.

  32. Wow only 4 superbowl win in that long history….Dallas has 5 rings…

You mean the long history that you’ll pretend didn’t start til 1967 so you don’t have to count all 13 of Green Bay’s World Championships.?

The Cowflops only have 8 more to go. For now.

  33. The Seahawks deserve to be favored, especially with Aaron Rodgers’ mobility severely limited.

But let’s tee it up and see what happens before we book Seattle’s flight to the Super Bowl.

  34. The Packers are softer than a gummy bear that’s been in your pants pocket all day. The Seahawks will trample them.

Time for some new material, trolls!

  36. This is why the NFL had these teams in the season opener. They are the 2 best teams in the NFC/NFL.

The Packers beat the Patriots and the Cowboys stomped the Colts. The Packers can beat either of the AFC teams. Seattle already has a win over Green Bay in the regular season.

This game should be the Super Bowl. These teams are elite and the winner will beat the AFC team.

It isn’t easy to win a World Championship, that’s why guys who have done it like Rodgers and Wilson deserve respect (something a viking nut would never understand).

Congratulations to both on a fine season.

  37. I have seen and heard a lot about how good Seattle has looked, especially on defense, since their loss to the Chiefs. But, I have to say I am not overly impressed with what I have seen. They played 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string quarterbacks in 4 of those 6 games, and 2 against a 49ers team that was kind of a disaster at the end of the year. Then after being gifted home field advantage due to the Cardinals quarterback issues they got to play what might be the worst playoff team of all time.

  38. ON THE NFL NET WORK 75 % OF AMERICA JUST PICKED THE PACKERS TO BEAT SEATTLE. THE PACKERS WILL PLAY WAY BETTER THAN THEY DID IN THE SEASON OPENER. THE PACKERS WILL PLAYED FOCUSED INSPIRED FOOTBALL. THEIR DEFENSE WILL PLAY ANGRY AND INTENSELY.

  39. And they should be. But anything can happen in the game.

Good luck to Seattle fans. We can both be thankful we don’t cheer for the Vikings.

    ————————————————-

That’s all great, but next year Vikings will be 3-0 vs those teams.

    BOOK IT

Seahawks and Packers are mortgaging their future for here and now while the Vikings are building a dynasty that will last for decades.

On defense: Thomas, Sherman, Chancellor, KJ Wright, Mebane, Wagner, Bennett, Avril, Irvin, Tony McDaniel–all signed until at least 2016

On offense: Okung, Unger, Sweezy, Britt, Baldwin, Willson, Richardson, Miller, Lynch, Michael, Coleman, Turbin, and depth–all signed through at least 2016.

Seattle has roughly $48 million in cap space to extend Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner and sign free agents.

So, the core of this team is together for at least through the end of 2016, at which point it will be time for the young drafted players and free agent signees to step up.

  41. You Minnesota fans are sure cute. You continue to prove that not only have you earned all of your zero championships but that you’ve earned it just the same.

If you really stop and think about it, your season ends the same every year….not cheering FOR your team but cheering AGAINST some other team. That being undisputed, it’s pretty clear that you’re really not even fans of your own team at all.

Not only sad and pathetic but very richly earned. Not go gave someone smarter than you re-read this to you.

  42. wrm – OK, OK, you got me. I somehow have not been able to get my Vikings to win a Superbowl. You somehow have been able to help your Packers get over the hump. How do you do it? It is a skill you have and I don’t.

  43. Keep in mind the idiots that took Denver to win the super bowl last year over Seattle. The current crop of NFL fans have no clue what DEFENSE is and how it wins. This arena type football that has been prevalent since 2004 season has skewed the perception of a good football team. If you people have a clue you know that the lowly Panthers had the second best playoff defense. Cam Super Girl just happens to suck. Look at Green Bay’s defense, yuck! Anyone who wants to be king for a day just needs to put as much currency as possible on Seattle this Sunday. Wait till Saturday, by then the same idiots that took Denver in last years SB will have brought the spread down to 6

Please know what you are talking about before posting such drivel. These 2 franchises each have GMs that get the very most out of their salary caps and exercise more discipline (value signings) than most franchises in the league. Schneider and Thompson are not two to panic and spend their nickels foolishly.

  45. As a Packer fan, The packers would need a perfect game with a 100% healthy Rodgers to even sniff a win next week. Seahawks are back to back. Still a great season from the Pack and from MVP Rodgers! Vikings will never know that kind of success

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Might as well. It’s always fun watching Rodgers and his Packers take a sound beating in the playoffs. It has become kind of a family tradition for fans around the country.

  47. This will be a great chance for all the Hawk-haters to put their money where their mouth is. Vegas is even spotting you seven points. Go ahead. The 12 are waiting.

  48. * How many games has Russell Wilson missed in his 3-year career, plus playoffs?

    * How many games has Earl Thomas missed?
    * Richard the Mouth Sherman?
    * Marshawn Lynch (as a Seahawk, not Bill)?

Last year in the playoff game vs San Francisco, Packers were playing without their best D player as Matthews was on IR.
In the game, the Packers lost starting CB Sam Shields and starting OLB Mike Neal for the game, same drive… both guys went off on the same cart.

Gosh I’d hate to see both Earl Thomas (neck stinger from leading in with his head like he always does) and Bob Wagner (torn pec) leave the field in the first half…..

  49. The last seven weeks the Seahawks have faced Stanton, Kaepernick, Sanchez, Kaepernick, Lindley, Hill and Newton. Their D is good but they’ve played mediocre opposing signal callers. Yes they crushed GB in week one that that’s a long time ago and the Green Bay defense has improved greatly since then. People are also forgetting that Percy Harvin had a major impact in the opener. Seattle should be favored by a touchdown but don’t expect a blowout.

  50. Only of the things the Packers struggle with on the road is getting their plays off. For whatever reason they seem slower to get to the line in the no-huddle and then are always right down to the wire on the play clock due to the noise.

To me they really have to get this right, if you are always snapping at :01 versus Seattle they will kill you with the jumps their DE’s get.

I think their biggest worry on D is containing Wilson. That’s not a slight on Lynch, I just don’t think GB’s run D is as bad as everyone thinks. It’s not great, but they do seem to be able to string together some short gains to force 3rd downs. The problem is that they seem to get in stretches were they give up medium to large gains on outside runs.

  51. Wait til you play a real team this season, Whoop the Eagles, next week vs. the Patriots…. beat them too.

I guess the Packers are playing with house money as a banged up Rodgers, and a week 1 victory. Means he Packers shouldn’t even bother getting on the plane to Seattle.

The Packers have come a LONG ways since week 1. Haha, and Peppers are more comfortable and understand the scheme better. Hayward now has his 2nd season of playing under his belt after missing last season. The Rookies on offense like Rodgers, Linsley, and Adams are playing better.

Seahawks are playing better too, but they will be missing a player that created a lot of mismatches the first time around as they traded Harvin, That may come back to hurt them this Sunday.

  52. I’m sorry I’m predicting a blowout, it was a blowout in week 1 when EVERYONE was healthy. GB wanted nothing to do with Sea. defense, especially its secondary, why pay Rodgers all that money along with Nelson etc with they were scared to challenge the LOB?? THATS WHY YOU GET THAT KIND OF MONEY IN THE FIRST PLACE. Why would you think anything different the second time around?? Not to mention GB hasn’t done well against any decent teams on the road this year. Unless you wanna count the Dolphins and Vikings, who had a good playoff run this year.. oh wait. Plan a home project for Sunday cause I think the AFC title game is going to the be the only entertaining game next week.

    -Skins fan.

  53. I don’t think the Packers are the least bit intimidated by Seattle. And Seattle was not exactly dominant over a scrappy Carolina team. The Packers can win this game.

  54. I wish Stellar!
I love the Packers as much as ANYONE does. And I hate the Seahawks as much as ANYONE does.

But we WERE intimidated week one there. Clearly. You don’t avoid Sherman if you aren’t afraid of him.
But he’s not the physical one.
That’s Kammy Chancellor, Earl Thomas, Bobby Wagner, and the many others……

    And Marshawn Lynch.

Sam Barrington, Mike Daniels, or Josh Boyd, someone needs to take Marshawn’s head off Sunday early…. and/or Russell Wilson’s.

And someone needs to crack-block Chancellor, Wagner, and Thomas hard…. knock their head’s off.

Lastly, record the game so you can watch with your own replays, HOW MANY TIMES Seattle’s DB’s get away with grabbing Jordy & Cobb & Adams’ & Quarless, Richard Rodgers jerseys when trying to run routes….. they do it all the time. I have tons of screen shots.

Zebras HAVE to call it BY THE LETTER OF THE LAW early and often, and MAKE them follow the rules. We’ll see that Sherman is not the best. He will get eaten alive if he has to cover Randall Cobb all day, and can’t grab and hold.

  55. Seattle was beaten at home by the Cowboys. They no longer have Harvin or Paul Richardson, their emerging deep threat.

Green Bay has the corners to shut down the Seattle passing game. This can allow Green Bay to focus 8-9 in the box to stop Lynch and put a spy on Wilson.

If Rodgers plays like he did in the 2nd half vs Dallas, Green Bay probably covers this spread pretty easily.

  56. The Packers suck on the road against mediocre teams..Seahawks are the best in the league..it will be close until halftime but not much of a game afterwards…..31-10 Seahawks

  57. Why all you think that Seattle will just roll over Green Bay I have no idea. Rodgers is a accurate QB whether he’s hurt or 100%. Wilson on the other hand is not at all as accurate as Rodgers even with Wilson being 100%. Both Lacy and Lynch run hard, so in my opinion it’s going to come down to which QB can connect with there WR’s. 31-24 Packers!

  58. You actually think GB, which has not scored a lot of points against Wilson’s hawks will all of a sudden be able to score a lot with Rodgers injured on top of it. Dreams are not reality! Now, as far as accuracy Wilson is the top QB in QBR in the playoffs, higher than any other playoff QB. Far as completion percentage, Wilson 63.4, Brady 63.5, Rodgers 65.8, Manning 65.5. So, tell me how Wilson is way worse at passing!

  59. I expect GB, to be as before. They will lose. One fact is GB can not handle fast defenses which is what Seattle has. They blew GB out in the first game and GB is injured(QB) and he will not be as mobile unless he shoots pain killers.

  60. As a Packer fan I guess what we should do is just forfeit this game and save everyone the misery that will happen this weekend.

Rodgers is limited, the Packers OL cant handle the Seahawks D, its on the road etc. So lets just give up any chance to the mighty Seahawks.

  61. Sounds about right 🙂 GB can not handle fast defenses like the Hawks, a true weakness they have. I hope a good game but I think Rodgers being injured really hurts the team. Dallas did not get to him and the Hawks will forcing him to move and he can’t do that now.

  62. Response to “tigerwoodsballs says: Jan 11, 2015 8:22 PM”

Regarding your childish name calling, calling my team Seadderall, I just wanted to make a couple of points:

The Seahawks have not had any players test positive for Adderall in the last 2 seasons, while dozens of other teams have. Also, the Hawks have cleaned house…gotten rid of any players that got suspended for pot or Adderall except one. The Patriots and 49ers continue to sign players that were previously suspended.

Most importantly, Adderall has been downgraded by the NFL. It is no longer considered to be “performance enhancing”. Adderall has been downgraded to a recreational drug, same as pot.

  63. -seahawkgary
Aaron Rodgers is the 2nd highest ranked QB in the NFL right now and Russell Wilson is 12th! Clearly that is a indication of who is really the better QB! I’m not saying Wilson is garbage ball all means I’m just saying that Rodgers is the better QB and if it comes down to passing in the game, Rodgers will dominate!

  64. Lots of prognostications from Seahawk fans that I can’t argue with as a Packer fan. Any honest student of the game would realize it will be a monumental task for Green Bay to pull the upset at the Clink. Having said that, GB will show up and give it the best they can against a very active and focused Seattle team. The game on the field, not comparisons of past games played this season, will decide who wins. Good stuff.

  65. The Packers should just forfeit to the Seahawks and focus on getting Rogers healthy enough to make a run at next year. Maybe the Seahawks will have their roster diminished in free agency after a second Super Bowl title for the second year in a row. With Rogers all gimped up, this is going to be a blowout and a pitiful game to watch. The Packers will surely embarrass themselves against the most dominant defense in the league. They’d be smarter to start Flynn, in terms of damage control.

  66. Just be ready for a game! It’s not gonna be a blow out like all you think, the packers are going to bring it and there going to shock Seattle! Aaron Rodgers is going to handle Seattles defense! And guaranteed Wilson will throw bad balls all game, he doesn’t throw good against tight coverage! Go Packers!
