Report: John Fox declines to interview with Jets

Getty Images

John Fox won’t be returning to New York.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the former Broncos coach already has declined to interview with the Jets.  Which means either that Fox has no interest in joining one of the most dysfunctional franchises in the league or that he has something else lined up.

Bet on the latter.  Plenty of business gets done with winks, nods, and conversations that never happened.  One of those conversations that never happened may have happened between Fox and another team that currently is looking for a head coach.

Like maybe the Bears.

UPDATE 9:18 p.m. ET:  Schefter now says the Jets have informed him that no request to interview Fox was made.  Which possibly is semantics.  Especially since Fox said “no thanks.”

  1. Wow. That’s a little embarrassing for the Jets. “No thanks, guys … Potential unemployment looks like the better option for me. Good luck with that roster, boys!”

  2. Welcome to the Chicago where the Bears get killed every year. Good luck trying to win with Cutler. He’s going to get fired in couple years.

  3. Going from Manning to Geno would cause such whiplash Fox’s head would pop clean off.

I assume all other candidates will say no to the Jests, forcing them to employ a large bowl of chicken salad as the next head coach. Again.

  4. Smarter guy than I thought….Woody makes all the decisions there then blames the coach and GM when it doesnt work….He’s not in a begging stage yet….he just signed a 5 yr extension he can wait for the right situation Atl or Bears if they dont hire him wait until next yr and see what is available…..

  5. Best NON move he could have made…. I’d kick a can before trying to run that 3 ring circus of a franchise!! Lol!!!

  6. He turned down the Jest (spelled correctly)?

The only team worse than them is the perennial cellar dweller Brownstripes.

These two teams are not just Crappy, they’re Crappier and Crappiest.

  7. RRyan looks smart taking the quick job. Atlanta looks like the plumb. Stable ownership, new stadium coming, nice place to live, etc. Imagine having to choose between the Raiders, Jets, Bears and Broncos? Bears are gonna have to be blown up and it looks like PManning may walk away too. Desperate guys like Billick and Mangini may want to wait by the phone. Fox obviously has something lined up, but I have no idea what it is. Maybe Pittsburgh or Cincy will wise up and fire their HCs, but I doubt it.

  8. Well, no one can question the man’s intelligence ever again as far as I’m concerned.

  9. Too funny now it is being reported the Jets never asked to speak with Fox regarding their HC job

  10. Don’t go there Quinn. You’ll be under fire after week two. No Wilson, lynch, LOB. Actually the opposite. The secondary is bad, they don’t have a quarterback, and the running back just got arrested

  11. As a Lions fan, not worried if Fox goes to the Bears. The Bears’ troubles aren’t coaching related as much as they are GM/roster related. And Fox doesn’t seem like a guy that gets the most out of what he’s got.

You do realize he got to the playoffs and won a game with Tebow, right? Went to a SB with Jake Delhomme. What do you mean he doesn’t get the most out of what he’s got?

  13. >”Thank goodness. He is an overrated bumb!”

I hope you never have the gall to call anyone out over their spelling of the New York Jest.

  14. Team is average, owner is a nutcase.
Welcome to about 1/3 of the NFL, so that’s not really the determining factor.

What makes the Jets even less attractive is the insufferable fan base and obnoxious media that no coach wants to have to deal with day in and day out.

Have to love the lack of education by Lions fans! First of all, we have a new GM so that remains to be seen if that will be an issue. Second, Fox is actually known for getting the most out of his players! See Carolina/Delhomme, Broncos/Tebow, taking 2 different teams to Super Bowls and his defenses are always solid even when lacking stars! Give me Fox any day! …and don’t worry, after Suh walks this off season your Lions will be back in the basement w/ the Vikikings where they belong!

  16. Fox: I am eager to continue my coaching career.

Jets: we have a job opening, want an interview?

Fox: I said eager not desperate.

  17. I wouldn’t want a guy who can’t win with Peyton Manning and those great weapons. Thank for passing chump.

  18. Marrone is the one who really wanted the Jets job and they turned HIM down. Now other coaches are turning down the Jets. Marrone should be embarrassed.

  19. The Jets saying they didn’t ask him is a complete joke, hire Doug Marrone and punt on 4th & 1, LOL.

  20. Now it’s being reported that Fox would interview with Jets if they asked. And they have not asked. Nice work media on your Jets bashing.

  21. He’s not much of a coach, but he won’t have to reach that far for a job.

The Jests need to temper their expectations, like the faiders have. Did you hear anyone else going after DelRio? Of course you didn’t. They, like the fade have to take whatever bum they can get.

Decent head coaches don’t go to train wrecks like those two franchises. It’s just a fact.

  22. To be honest, I think he’s way overrated! He fell short 3 years in a row with the best qb in history of the world.

  23. I wouldn’t want a guy who can’t win with Peyton Manning and those great weapons. Thank for passing chump.

You’re a Jets fan. You don’t want to win, you want to complain. My mom’s only happy when she’s miserable too.

    **********************

I thought Tom Brady still played for the Patriots.

  25. Manning has a well known history of being a playoff disaster. I cannot fault Fox for the lack of rings with Peyton at the helm. 9 one and dones…9.

  26. @jetsclaps: lol you beat me to it lol GOOD! Why would the Jets want a loser Head Coach like Olé Foxy??? Or Ole Salty, John the CEO? Elway,,, (just hit me! )That’s it, right? Can’t let that Clown off the hook. Just because he won a couple of rings when he was PLAYING. Not that anyone a shade shy of the 21st Century could/can remember? With all Their spending this off season. Denver couldn’t buy a Championship??! Money. It Was so worth it! “One and done, Denver” reminds me of the “Raaaidders!” But unlike the “Raaaidders!” ( team I actually like, other then the Jets) Denver,,.has arguably the best QB to ever play the game? Yet he still couldn’t win?! By loser, Next Man up!! Bye bye, c ya! Hey, you don’t want to come to NY? We don’t want you!! Fool

  27. If this is true, I honestly feel bad for the Jets. I have done my fair share of complaining how terrible they are, this and that but, to have a coach who has been around a while say, no thanks, that’s just awful.

From a football point of view, there are other teams who have everything sorted out, just need leadership from a good coach. The Jets have a lot of issues on and off the field. I can understand why he declined.

  28. John Fox is what the Bears need. He has taken 2 teams to the Super Bowl. As long as he and the new GM are on the same page the Bears could become relevant again. He doesn’t need a GM/owner who drafts a Tebow.

  29. Ok…. I get it. Some people like the man. Some don’t. I’m a Seahawks fan. Couldn’t really care less, and I can’t say I followed him closely. But….

The game against Indy was completely inexcusable. There is no defense. You had two weeks to prepare. Manning has been injured for a month. Anyone who has watched them play knows Manning wasn’t right. So you go in to that game, spread it 3 and 4 wide and chuck the ball down field with 9 routes when your qb has lost velocity and accuracy.

CJ Anderson has been a GOOD running back this year. Why on earth would he only have 18 rushes. He was 18 for 80 yards. That’s a 4.5 ypc avs. If you want to spread the defense wide and force Indy to play nickel defense all game, fine. But pound the box with CJ. use what you do have working and healthy. The fact that Anderson didn’t run that ball 30 times is the reason Denver lost that game.

John Fox might be a good guy. I don’t know him. But his gameplan for this game was moronic. And it cost denver.

  30. He’s going to the Falcons. And that deal may have been done for a minute. If not, they would have went hard after Rex Ryan.

Think about it: Established franchise QB, one of the best receiving corps in the NFL, new stadium’s being built, good pieces, more power in a division that gives an easy entry into the playoffs. This is simple.

  31. He should go, it would be like a modern version of Wizard of Oz…..

Fox with no heart…….the Jets with no courage…….and Woody with no brains…..

This will probably never make it in but I crack myself up regardless…..

Delhomme was a good QB. No Peyton or Brady, but he was good for a while. But Fox only coached that talented team to 3 playoff appearances. That defense should have ended up ranking among the best of all time. This alleged defensive mastermind signed off on a game plan for the 2008 playoff game that included not guarding Larry Fitzgerald at all.

He’s not going to do that well in Chicago. By October, he’s going to wish he was still in Denver.

  33. Fox: “Woody, Awwww I don’t know. Let me think about it. I’ve got a guy on line 2 who wants a set of whitewalls and Denver High is on line 3 about their coaching vacancy. Can I get back to you?”

  34. Coaching change, QB on the edge of retirement, clutch players are Free Agents…. The Denver Broncos are about to stink up the league!!!!!

  35. I will coach the Jets in exchange for a safe place to sleep and all the cheese sandwiches I can eat. I think you will find this to be the best offer you get all day.

  36. Yeah, and everyone thought Bruce Arians was a lock for the Bears two years ago, too.

If John Fox is really the guy the Bears need, there’s a very good chance they’ll screw it up.

  37. Jets Coaching Requirements:

    1) Tattoos of former QB’s.
    2) Obsession with being defeeted. (get it)?
    3) “Butt-fumble” is an audible.

Fox doesn’t strike me as their type anyway.

  38. “John Fox declines to interview with Jets”

    Comparable headlines:

    “Pilot declines to crash plane”
“Mobster declines to testify under oath”
    “Cow declines to enter slaughterhouse”

  39. Hey Jests, I’ll help you out here. Hire me and we’ll run the Statue of Liberty play on every offensive down. Couldn’t be any worse than you have shown over the past 4-5 years…
