49ers hire Jim Tomsula as head coach

AP

Jim Tomsula is poised to become the next head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the two sides are still ironing out details, but Tomsula is expected to be the 49ers’ next head coach.

Tomsula has actually been head coach of the 49ers before, for one game: The 49ers fired Mike Singletary with one game remaining in the 2010 season, and Tomsula was named interim head coach for the final game of the season. (The 49ers won that game, 38-7.)

The 49ers are the only NFL team Tomsula has worked for: He became their defensive line coach in 2007 and has had that job ever since, first under Singletary and then under Jim Harbaugh. Before coaching for the 49ers all of his coaching experience was in NFL Europe, where he rose from a defensive line coach to the head coach of the Rhein Fire in 2006.

  1. I’m actually pretty pumped about this. Everyone loves Tomsula, and he’ll be a good coach I think. And he looks like a cross between Mario from Super Mario Bros., and Ron Jeremy…just throwing that out there. Go Niners!!

  2. Harbaugh set a high bar and it wasn’t good enough for management, you better get at least 10 wins or more for a few years in a row or its gonna be bad news.

  3. Do you know that moment when you suddenly realize that you done screwed up by firing a great head coach?

    Yeah, that one.

  4. Perfect, replace a guy who has had HC experience in the collegiate level and hire a guy who has had only 1 game prior. We all know how the last hiring of a certain guy who didn’t have experience before.

    SMH THIS OWNERSHIP!

    -49ers fan

  5. Boy, it’s a good thing they grabbed him before all the other teams who were chasing after Jim Tomsula got him.

  6. As a Seahawk fan, it appears to be a good hire for the Niners. Better than take a flyer in Adam Gase… You know the guys will suit up and play for Tomsula based on familiarity and previous chemistry with the team.

  7. This decision was made last year. I like Tomsula. I hope it works out. Now figure out how to get a couple decent WRs, get the defensive studs healthy, and Tomsula could be really successful.

  8. Clearly the 49ers are the smarter team among the 2 Bay Area teams.

They actually hired someone with a winning record unlike Del Rio!

I’d take 1-0 over 68-71 any day of the week.

  9. This was the plan right from the start. But York/Baalke had screwed up the PR so badly over Harbaugh’s “firing” that they had to look like they were “open-minded”.

Anybody believe Baalke and Jed York are open-minded or transparent?

  10. He’ll be a “yes” man to Jed and Trent. That’s all they wanted. I’m hearing elsewhere that … Dennis Allen is the DC??

  11. Yeah it makes total sense to fire a horrible coach who got you to 2 NFCCG and a SB in 4 years so you can hire a guy who’s never even been a coordinator in the NFL.

  12. Baalke finally found his puppet.

You’d think he’d want to make a splash after firing a wildly successful coach for no reason other than spite.

  13. I like this hire if for nothing else, he has his players respect. I really hope that Fangio stays on and we get someone good for OC. Our guys will play hard for Tomsula. Now if he could just do something about his chest lettuce!

Santa Clara 49ers still need a nfl qb. unless you’re a homer niners fan you have to agree with this

Kaepernick and Wilson had essentially the same stats in Kaepernicks worst year with no oline and Vernon and Crabtree who quit on the team. I watched from my seat every game no pocket, no time, no recievers open people that put all the blame on Kaepernick are simpletons

Do you know that moment when you suddenly realize that you done screwed up by firing a great head coach?

    Yeah, that one.

They forced Seifert out and fired Mooch. But that was a long time ago. Since then, the head coaches haven’t been much though we’ve a couple of very good coordinators.

Or are arguing that the 30th ranked passing game (Harbaugh’s baby) was the key to winning versus the #2, #2, #3 and #10 (with only three starters) defenses that carried the team. That they were, magically, somehow a product of Harbaugh’s great coaching?

Fact is, the 49ers offense was the beneficiary of a great defense causing great field position while it flailed around in mediocrity. As soon as the defense slipped, the offense fell off the planet and Harbaugh was exposed as yet another Norv Turner.

  16. Oh man! The 49ers just locked up the coach with the best winning percentage in NFL history. Tomsula has a winning percentage of 1.000%

  17. Finally! Someone who can get along with Baalke and York. Doesn’t matter if he wins or not, as long as he can get along with upper management and ownership.

  18. I’d rather hire a new coach like him than a coach like Cheat Carroll who left USC with all kinds of violations

  19. ….as the people in Seattle and Arizona say really??? and laugh. 2nd rate coach for a 1st rate group of players. Baalke should be canned.

  20. From a Seahawks fan I say thanks. I do not believe this was the right hire, he seems like someone management can just push over. Unless they get some serious help with some fresh and credible assistents i dont see how this works.

How can you Sell shipping out on of the best coaches in football with regards to results for a coach who wasn’t even a offensive or defensive coordinator on his own team. I like Staying in house but their is a building up period that you need to prove yourself!

  21. I don’t mind it. The players do respect him and they will play hard for him. It’s all about the offensive coordinator. If they hire a good offensive coordinator, it will be nice to have a coach that doesn’t call any plays. His only responsibility will be strategy and clock management. Both things that Harbaugh was terrible at. Someone mentioned Rathman as the OC. I am all about that.

  22. The defense hasn’t been a problem since about 3 years before Harbaugh was hired. The Niners need experts on the Offensive side of the ball. How does a Dline coach help the glaring need the 49ers have?

  23. This is a clear downgrade at the Head Coaching position. Nice and loyal are great, but they don’t win on the field.

I hope this dude can hack it for the sake of 9ers fans everywhere. It would be a nice story. Also very much a surprise story, now.

  24. Hopefully kid Jed sends him to a Dental specialist. He can’t be the face of the organization with the choppers looking like Austin Powers

  25. What an amazingly uninspired hire.

Congratulations to the 49ers on running the best head coach they’ve had, since Bill Walsh, out of town.

    And welcome back to mediocrity!

  26. Don’t know the guy but hey, your a NFL HC…only 32 of them so best of luck.

What I find ironic is how everyone who chooses to bash coaches uses terms like “puppet” and “yes men”. You’ll see the irony when each of them go to work tomorrow and get told to do something by someone else. Bet a dollar and a dime 99.9% will respond with “YES”.

Wonder what that makes all them? Things I ponder…

  27. As I said in my previous comment, I will reserve judgement on Tomsula.

But I am beginning to wonder why the Niners get such a pass when it comes to criticism of the front office. Does everyone realize the Niners and the Raiders have been to the same amount of Super Bowls in the last 15 years?

The Niners bumbled around for years until they got lucky and a good coach wanted to work there. Then they spent 4 years running him out of town.

  28. As a Seahawks fan, I would prefer the Niners not fall into obscurity. I find this hire to be much better than Adam Gase.

  29. Although I don’t know who this coach is, I’ll give him a chance. But York I still think your an idiot.

  30. He looks like the kind of guy you’d want to have a beer with, as long as he’s buying. Good luck 49ers!

  31. Wow. That hurts. The best candidate they could recruit to that new stadium and a pretty strong football team (it is not the Raiders, Jets or Browns for crying out loud) was their D- Line Coach.

My spidey senses say that the talent with real options is getting a bad vibe from this outfit.

It’s gotta be some combination of York, Baalke and Kaepernick that is telling a talented coaching candidate … better off looking elsewhere.

  32. So, I presume this guy will be York’s henchman. Couldn’t have some ambitious outsider coming in and expecting control of the team.

So, I guess, Tomsula is amenable to taking the blame for the upcoming failure….er.. .I mean season.

  33. “Perfect, replace a guy who has had HC experience in the collegiate level and hire a guy who has had only 1 game prior. We all know how the last hiring of a certain guy who didn’t have experience before.

Tomsula was a head coach in Europe before taking his position with the 49ers. He has more experience in that position than anyone else they were considering hiring.

    -A Smarter 49ers’ fan

  34. Love all the feedback from the people that watched 3 or 4 49ers games this year and think they are experts.

  35. This would be a helluva hire if you were trying to win the WAFL bowl. Position coach/No Coordinating experience havent the 49ers been down that road before?? Experience is the best teacher? Guess not for a 49er. Good luck 49ers can’t wait to see that chess match with Pete Carroll, Jeff Fisher, Bruce Arians &………Jim Tomsula?!! Good luck with that.

  36. “Love all the feedback from the people that watched 3 or 4 49ers games this year and think they are experts.”

I know that every year, teams fire defensive coordinators and head coaches. I know that this guy was a D line coach for eight years and never rose above that level. Not with San Fran or any other team in the league. I know there is a reason for that. Further, I know that Harbaugh went to three NFC Title games and one Super Bowl in the last four years, went 8 – 8 this year with a ravaged defense, and has his own mind. And I know that he’s gone now. Lastly, I know that Tomsula was very, very, very happy to get this job.

“the 49ers offense was the beneficiary of a great defense causing great field position while it flailed around in mediocrity”

    ———————————————-

I hadn’t seen many people mention reading through 9ers stories, but I am glad I am not the only one who feels this way.

I personally think the D and Kap’s legs help mask alot of bad Offense play calling.

  38. Control first then Win….that is the new Motto right Jed! Trent and Tomsula will be gone within 2 years, guaranteed!

  39. Well, now it appears the longer an asst. coach ‘stays alive’ in the current playoffs, the less patient a team is will to be.

So…, what happened to Quinn and Gase being virtual “locks” for a H.C. job this year? I don’t know what is fuunnier– this hire, Del Rio Grande in Oaktown, Rex in a toasty new parka?!! Maybe the Jets hiring Bowles isn’t so bad, and the Bears possibly landing John Fox, and Atlanta going for, uh, wait. Never mind, there is still one more laughable signing coming down in Dixie. The Falcons. So much talent on offense, so little on defense…and much much less in the front office and owner’s box.

    : )

  40. Sports radio here in Chicago reports that Marc Trestman is being looked at as a potential OC. Let me be the first to wish the 49ers well with that one.

  41. @purplekoolaid1 says: Jan 14, 2015 6:13 PM

This guy is going to have a better job than anyone posting here and we still have all the PFT Trolls spewing hate.

    Good luck Jim!

How could you possibly know his job is better than mine?

  42. If you want to give the fans, the team and the coach confidence, you hire him immediately. If you want to appear to be settling, then you bring a bunch of retreads, and then finally give the job to the guy on your staff you’ve known well for years. Stinks of ineptitude to me – although Jed probably thinks he’s a genius.

  43. what to go 49ers! hire a guy who doesn’t even have OC or DC responsibilities on his resume and no coaching experience outside of SF!

well done! don’t spend too much….

  44. I know that every year, teams fire defensive coordinators and head coaches. I know that this guy was a D line coach for eight years and never rose above that level. Not with San Fran or any other team in the league.
    ________________________________
He rose to interim head coach so this statement is wrong. And with your logic, Harbaugh had 0 years of coaching experience before he became an NFL head coach.

  45. Not a 49er fan but I’ll root for Tomsula… He played d2 at my Alma matter at Catawba, and he was there helping out with our defense when I played 97-2001. Best of luck Coach

  46. Some of you remember “The Catch” in 1982, Montana to Clark, that started the Niner dynasty and ended Dallas for good, for over a decade.

We are witnessing history again. Ever since “The tip” by Richard Sherman in the NFC Title game, we have seen the changing of the guards. The Niners appear to be in full, “dumpster fire” mode. Will it take the Niners a decade to return to ascendancy? We shall see.

  47. Sounds about right. Last time management picked “their guy” from inside the building, we ended up with the obviously in over his head Mike Singletary who we heard was ready to be an HC despite never coordinating a defense and other similar rhetoric from the 49er front office. I’m thinking this is going to end similarly.

  48. This could open the door to a job for Kurt Warner as a QB’s coach. They could piece together a pretty good offensive coaching unit.

I said right after that catch that Michael Crabtree’s career was over.

All I heard after was how they would win the thanksgiving game over Seattle. That never happened.

49ers fans know nothing about football.

  50. this reminds me of when synder hired jim zorn. from position coach to head coach. how come tomsula’s name hasn’t been mentioned for other openings? seattle>Santa Clara

  51. I feel bad for 49er fans. They have a 35 year trust fund kid running things.

Tomsula only has 7 years of NFL experience, all with the 49ers. All his other coaching gigs were in Europe. Hopefully he has a good LinkedIN so he can find some assistant coaches.

  52. OC – Trestman
    DC – Tarver

Those are the rumors per some local hack… looking forward to the Bears offense and the Raiders defense next year Niner fans?

  53. I don’t think this is a bad hire at all.

I just think Harbaugh was a better coach and it’s so amazing that they would fire a guy who averaged 12 wins over his first 3 seasons and was a play or two away from a Super Bowl Championship.

  54. Where do you whiner fans get this idea that players will play hard for this guy? 1-0? I don’t get it. Harbaugh made you guys, where was tomsula when you sucked? Probably where your gonna be in two years.

  55. WE HAVE IT BETTER THAN YOU.

    Sincerely,

The Cardinals, Seahawks, Michigan Wolverines, Packers, Lions, Colts, Broncos, Cowboys, Panthers, Steelers, Bengals, Ravens and Patriots.

  56. Was is York or Tomsula who was the snitch/leak within the organization?
This guy comes out of nowhere to bnecome the head coach? Sounds like York repaid a favor.
    This won’t end well.

  57. This is about hiring a head coach who does his job through leadership and delegating.

    It’s an interesting move.

What you need now is 2 (or 3) coordinators who can successful run their own sides of the ball whilst reporting to a head coach who is still their boss and has final call.

At least as a defensive line coach he’ll understand defense and will understand pass protection and the run game. But it’s a big ask for him to fix the things troubling Kaep.

More than any of the other new coaches he’ll have to make great coordinator hires.

  58. Wow, seems like all of these teams are scraping the bottom of the barrel to find a coach. There aren’t any better candidates out there than Del Rio, Tomsula, Ryan and the retreads that are getting hired? I know the NFL is a fraternity, but even they take on new members every year.

  59. Let me see if I got it straight….

You run the coach that had you in a Super Bowl and 3 straight NFCCG’s in 4 years out the door, and then hire a D Line coach from under the architect of one of the NFL’s best defense, basically running Fangio out the door…..

    No Harbaugh. No Fangio.

And a head coach that has no experience at Head Coach level in the NFL.

Well, there goes the rivalry. It was fun while it lasted.

    Go Hawks. RePete.

  60. Comes down to the fact that Harbaugh couldn’t win the big ones, just like Fox in Denver.

When guys like Boldin and Vernon applaud the Tomsula hire, sometimes it just comes down to who the players will PLAY for.

Tomsula got a lot of production from the DLine.
Let’s see what he can do before we indict him.

This team STILL needs an Offense and, a QB to run it efficiently.

  61. Everyone who says this was a bad hire, I remember there was a article that said tomsula was to be hired on this very site……Everybody had nothing but great things to say. Now that it happened, Everybody tries to say its a bad hire smh. You guys love to hate for no reason….So hiring fangio would have been better when he’s also never coached? At least tomsula is respected in the locker room….I see how much players respect the man wearing a black 49ers coat. Thats tomsula…..he was the only other coach on the sideline as crazy as harbough…..If we get a great OC to work with kaeps strengths, 13-3 year. People should say the same for ryan too cuz he has no offensive mind…..but no you won’t lol

  62. Unbelievable. Jed York is a complete Moron. Im speachless. Im sure Tomsula is a great guy but….DAMN….to go from Jim Harbaugh….to a Dline coach…with no professional or college head coaching experience….not even a coordinator at the pro level….is INSANE!!!!!! What a total slap in the face to every 49er fan out there. York is an absolute joke. What reputable Ofennsive or Defensive coordinator is going to want to come and work for a guy whom they feel is beneath them from an experience standpoint?! How is a Dline coach going to fix our one true problem- Offense and the development of Kapernick??? HOW?????? This id Singletary part TWO- Great motivator, not qualified to run a team, be offensively creative, and have to go up against the other head coaches in the division. DAMN. It is a sad day to be a 49er fan…and YES, I am a 49er Faithful, but I am also a realist. We will be set back another 8 years as we were before our savior Harbaugh. Heres to looking forward to those top 5 draft picks every year.

  63. Not to be too negative here, but you do know that the Lions did something similar back in 2007, when they hired a career D-Line coach to become their HC…

That didn’t work out too well.

  64. Cards Fan here…you have to realize that the rest of the clubs in the NFC West (and their fans) are pleased with what’s going-on in 49ers-land. Nothing that SF has done recently has improved the franchise in any way–it’s only made things worse. I used to have respect for the Niners back in the days when they were smarter and more talented than anyone else, but now it’s simply sad to see them bumble-about. I give Coach Tomsula two, strife-filled, forgettable seasons before he’s scapegoated for their upcoming failures.
