Report: Joe Barry will be D.C. in D.C.

AP

There’s a new defensive coordinator in Washington.

Joe Barry, who is currently the linebackers coach in San Diego, will be the new defensive coordinator in Washington, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Barry has been a defensive coordinator once before, and it did not go well: He was on the job in 2008 in Detroit, when the Lions went 0-16, and as the season went downhill there were accusations that Barry got the job not because he was the best person for it but because he is the son-in-law of then-Lions head coach Rod Marinelli.

Since Marinelli, Barry and the rest of the staff were fired after that 0-16 season, Barry has spent one year in Tampa Bay as linebackers coach, one year at USC as linebackers coach, and four years in San diego as linebackers coach.

  1. …accusations that Barry got the job not because he was the best person for it but because he is the son-in-law of then-Lions head coach Rod Marinelli

Like Scott Pioli being the son-in-law of Bill Parcells?

  2. At least the Barry name is well respected in D.C.

Who can ever forget the late Mayor Marion “no crack, no hookers, just good government” Barry.

  3. There is a report saying nothing has been decided. I think the Skins still are waiting to see what happens with Vic Fangio.

  4. It’s funny how certain people will take any possible opportunity to mention the Lions 0-16 season. It’s probably not a coincidence that a lot of those people are fans of divisional rivals of the Lions.

  5. Even better than when a reporter asked Suh, “Are you afraid you won’t be able to feel your feet this week?” after his suspension for stepping on Rodgers was overturned, was the time a reporter asked Marinelli after going 0-16, “Do you wish your daughter had married a better Defensive Coordinator?” Oh man, that was great. So good that it got that guy suspended or maybe fired.

  6. He was in a no win situation with the Detroit team, hopefully things go better with the Redskins.

  7. Typical Redskins. So many good candidates and they go for guys who they have a relationship with. Thanks A.J. Smith. Bad management bad team. Nothing has changed with this team.

  8. How can the Seahawks hire a new DC already? Is there another team in the state of Washington looking for a DC?

  9. I like Bruce Allen, but if JB really is the next DC in Washington, this is a perfect example of one of Bruce’s virtues (loyalty) also being his downfall: Bruce is loyal to Jon Gruden (stemming from days in Oakland!) and hires Jon’s brother Jay as head coach. Predictably brings in Raheem Morris, Richard Mann, Doug Williams, Sean McVay and Paul Kelly (and now Barry) from Tampa Bay. The definition of insanity – doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

  10. So in today’s NFL, being a mediocre coordinator does not prevent you from getting a head coaching job (Jack Del Rio), but being a mediocre head coach WILL prevent you from getting a coordinator job (Wade Phillips), no matter how good of a coordinator you were.

Only one of the logic defying tendencies of today’s NFL.

  11. Hmmmm,

With another NFL coming to a close, and a new 2015 season , almost upon us . . . It is SAFE to say : the 2015 R’Skins are now mathematically-eliminated from any 2015 post-season football.

  12. San Diego had a winning record, gave up a lot less points. Technically speaking it is an upgrade to what we had before. Let me guess Raheem will stay on as DB coach. am I right or am I right

  13. Strange, I thought they hired a new GM recently to change their MO and turn things around.

  14. John Keim and Dianna Rusinni who cover the team daily are saying no deal with Berry is done or imminment..

  15. I, to this day, cannot figure out why they switched from a perennial top 10 defense as a 4-3 to a perennial bottom 10 defense as a 3-4.

Hire Wade Phillips or Vic Fangio…proven successful DC’s…HC’s, not so much…

  16. Skins want to stay in the 3-4 that is why Jim Schwartz is not being considered, Wade Phillips and Vic Fangio are 3-4 guys.

  17. Also, is a Tampa Bay reunion going to be the solution when there’s no defense in place???

Plus, hiring Barry won’t solve the biggest issue biting washington right now, the quarterback.

Simple. Job security. Gruden has a plan not to get terminated mid season next year. Those guys would serve as qualified interim head coaches in the instance Snyder couldn’t take the amateur show anymore. Bruce Allen just wont quit with the good old boy hiring’s. That’s why we remain the laughing stock of the NFL and cant get out of the basement.

  19. If Phillips or Fangio gets the job people will have different opinions the Berry hiring is just a unconfirmed rumor.

Wade isn’t going to be much better. He’s only good for 1 maybe 2 season before every other offense he plays shows you just how good he is not. But as a Cowboys fan, I’m all for you hiring Wade.

  21. Who’s not so bright idea was this crap?! There is Schwartz available? How do you not go after him? What about Denver’s DC since that whole crew got the axe? This stinks.

  22. Mccloughan let Jay Gruden pick the new DC. Every GM needs a little time to establish a solid foundation. If the Redskins suck next year, McCloughan can clean house since the coaches aren’t his guys. If he were to hire a DC this year and the Redskins suck, he would have to fire the coach and keep the DC and give him more time. This year will be about stock piling picks and setting up his philosophy. Next year will be the year when he hires his own coaches.
